Hi guys and welcome back to grade school if you're new, here I'm Vandy and if you're a returning subscriber welcome back today, we are going to cover the topic of length management. That means managing the length of each braid As you move up the head so that all of the braids are the same length by the time you get finished with your entire process. So today, I'm going to show you how to prep and how to install the hair so that you're managing your length and you don't have to do a whole lot of cutting or fixing when you get towards the end. So if you want to learn more about length, management for braids make sure you stay tuned, so first things. First, we want to prep our hair before we begin braiding today we're going to be pressing for knotless braids, but I'll also show you how to manage your link for box braids as well. The color that we're using today is the color 30. As you know, we like to work with colored hair so that we can practice our tucking and we can see exactly where the extension hair ends and the natural hair begins and, of course, we're using the brand expression. Today, I'm prepping as if I'm going to be doing a set of knotless braids mid back length so usually that lands around bra strap length on a client on this side of the rack, I'm going to be prepping 42 inch, pre-stretched hair this side of the rack. I'M going to be prepping 52 inch, pre-scratched, hair, so 52 inches means that it's 52 inches from in to in so from here to here, it's 52 inches. But if you were to fold it in half, it's 26 inches same thing goes for the 42 inch from end to end it's 42 inches and if you cut it in half 21 inches starting from the back and as we move up the head, we'll be moving Into 26 inches, it's a 5 inch difference, so I'm going to go ahead and prep this hair and come back to show you how to do the install now, if you're interested in the rack that I have here, this is actually a two-sided, rolling, cart rack. I made myself you can check out this video right here and if you want to know exactly how much hair to prep and what sizes you need to prep, for you can check out these two videos right here. So the first thing I'm going to show you is how to measure out a box braid they're, actually a bit easier to manage and length, because you can adjust the length as you go, no matter what length you start with. So, for example, this is the 42 inch that we're going to put in the back of the head. You see where it falls right here and it tapers really nicely here. So you have a nice tight braid at the end, but as we move up the head up here, it stops about two or three inches past this point. But if we want the braids to be even we got to make sure that we stretch the hair out. So, with a box braid, what you can do as you're moving up the hair is what I like to do is split the hair in half whatever piece you're using, and then I like to slide one past the other. So I'm moving my middle point from one side to the other and then, by doing so, I now have a longer piece of hair that falls longer to the bottom. The only downside to doing this is that the more you do this, the more it will taper. So you may have to add in hair as you go along, if you want a thicker braid, but for the most part, this form of length management works really well for box braids in general, and you don't have to be scrambling looking for different lengths of hair Because sometimes the beauty supply store doesn't have the hair length that you're looking for all right. So I've already completed my first knotless braid, and I use this as a guide. As my stopping point you'll hear a lot of braiders. If you follow them, say often that the very first braid is the most important and they are absolutely right, because the very first braid is one going to set your length for the entire head, and it's also going to set the tone for the head. So once I finish this first braid, it's going to tell me this is the size and the length that I want the entire rest of the head to be. As you saw earlier, this client has very long hair. I do tend to have a lot of clients, especially kids, who come in and say: oh, we want the hair braided, but we only want it braided right to the ends of the hair. What I always have to tell them is: I have to go at least a couple of inches past their natural length, because when you go to take these braids down you're going to have a time trying to take out the braids at the ends, so I give Them enough lead weight so that they have something that they can cut and start taking the braids out with also when it comes to the hot water dipping. We don't want to dip too far up the natural length of the hair. So we want to have at least a couple of inches to work with. So if you have a client that already has mid back length hair, usually I would have to tell them you need to get waist length braids, because one your takedown is going to be pretty hard and two. We need to add in enough hair to cover the full length of the hair. So now I'm going to show you two different ways to manage the length As you move up the braid. As you can see on my rack here, I have one side with the 42 and one with the 52 and typically as I'm, moving up I'm pulling from the 42 and I'm managing the length from there. But let's say I get to the third or fourth row and then um. My 42 is not hitting the same length as the back braids. What I'm going to do now is I'm going to start pulling from my 52, but I'm going to start pulling from both sides. So if I start pulling from 52, I'm going to start pulling just one from 52., the 52 inch is going to set the tone for that braid that needs to match that back braid. Then I'm just going to start pulling from my 42 again to act as fillers as I move downward. So now I don't even have to think about the length because I already set the length with the first insertion of that that 52 inch piece. Another question I get quite often is as you're doing knotless braids. How do you know when to add in the hair here is a really easy trick that you can keep in mind as you're moving down the hair you're going to feel like maybe one or two legs is off, and you want to start inserting, because you know You'Re not going to have enough here. What I do is. I will use that very back braid as a guide for where I need to insert another 42 inch. So as soon as I'm braiding down - and I reach this level here - I'll grab, my 42 inch insert it and keep Braiding. By doing this, it does not change the length, I'm just using it as a filler. So this is one easy tip for adding in the hair, knowing when to add in the hair. So basically what you don't want to do is if you're moving down the braid and you need to insert hair. You don't want to insert your longer piece because the longer piece is going to extend the length of the hair and it won't match that back braid. You always want to use shorter pieces as you're going down the braid as fillers. That way, you don't have to do a lot of cutting or fixing towards the end, and there you see both braids are exactly the same. So here's the second way to manage your length - and this is in the event that you don't have longer hair to work with. Let'S say you get to the beauty, supply store and the color you want. All they have is short hair. You can still get braids. The same length you're just going to have to know how to feed in hair properly when you're moving down the braid. Typically, the best point insertion is right in the middle, where the hair cuts in half this is usually the middle. What you can do is instead Slide the hair, for example. This is the middle of the hair. What you can do is change your insertion point by sliding the hair down, so you can do this all the way towards the end of the hair, extending the length of the hair and then just insert where you need to. This is another way that you can manage your length at the top instead of the bottom and I'll show you what can happen if you don't do this management right now, typically, by the time you get to the top of the head, you should only be using Your longer links to match that back length, but I'm going to show you what happens if you use all long hair throughout the course of the braid. Let'S say we're getting to the bottom of the braid. But you want to keep adding hair because you don't run out of hair but you're, adding in more long hair. The longer hair you add, the fatter that braid is going to get. This works great if you're uh braiding to the floor, and you want to maintain that consistency. As far as the thickness goes. Let'S say these are the braids that you're working on you can already see as I'm moving down that this is not this braid's not going to match. So remember. This is our marker. This is where we need it to stop. These are where the other braids had stopped, but this one is really fat right here and we still have all of this hair left. Typically, at the end of the braiding process, we'll use a razor comb to trim the braids to make sure that they're, even across what you don't want to do, is trim when the braids are too fat at the ends. Because this is what happens. Let'S say I'm trying to get this the same length as those and I need to. I need to razor comb this I'm gon na razor comb this, if I don't do it properly, that's what's gon na happen see that you're about to have a nightmare. If you try to trim multiple braids at one time, it's going to be blunt, you can get it as tight as possible. But what's going to happen, is this braid is not gon na look like the rest. We don't have consistency here. You got a full blown braid all the way down here and the rest of these are tapered. So this is why link management at the top of the head is more important than trying to trim it and fix it. At the end, it becomes much more of a nightmare and your results are not consistent. So that completes today's video. You guys I did go ahead and trim and dip the ends of all these braids so that you can see how consistent they look, and I also trim the bottom so that you can see that they're not going to unravel because we tapered them properly. If you ever wonder why a braider who supplies the hair for you wants to know your exact length, measurements height um, how you want the ends to look. This is one reason why, because how we manage our length depends on what your needs are. So, whatever project you're tackling whether you're a professional, braider or you're, just braiding your girlfriend's hair, I hope this video was helpful for you as far as managing your length and how you want your end results to come out.
