My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.

On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!

I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.

You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.

Hey guys welcome to a new video today i wanted to talk about hair care and, more specifically, hair care at night. What you do to your hair at night can make a huge difference in the quality of your hair and just the way your hair looks and how healthy it is. I have made some changes to my overnight hair care over the past months years that i feel have had fantastic results, so i'm gon na go through everything i do at night to save and improve my hair. So let's get started straight away. The first and probably one of the most important things is actually something i have stopped doing, and that is that i no longer sleep on wet hair. This is a bad habit that i've had for most of my life. Actually, i would always shower and wash my hair before i went to bed and then i went i would sleep on wet hair. This is not ideal for a couple of reasons. First of all, when you are lying on your hair - and you know parts of your scalp, it doesn't get the chance to dry as fast as it normally would. If you were to let your hair dry, so your hairs and and your scalp stays wet for a lot longer and being wet for long periods of time, isn't good for your skin or your hair. The second reason being that hair is more prone to damage when it's wet. It can snag more easily or stretch out which leaves it weaker plus it can really mess up the texture of your hair. When you wake up and leave it, you know all weird and kinky in places where you, where the hair's been folded at night and stuff, like that, i have tried to combat this several different ways, but the only way i found it really work is to move My showers over to the morning wash my hair in the morning and then let it air dry and that has made a huge difference. My hair dries in a nicer texture and i feel like it has done great things for my scalp health as well. Second thing: i've done, and this is something i have been doing for a while, but i kind of changed up the way. How i do it is to sleep with my hair up again when you're sleeping you are tossing and turning you're lying on your hair. It is being rubbed against itself and against your pillowcase and there's just a lot that can happen to your hair at night people whose hair dangles easily can get super tangled. Now i personally don't struggle with tangles, my hair doesn't tangle, but it does get split ends and damaged ends. Super super quickly. I can literally cut my hair and then have split ends a week and a half later, not since i've been doing hair singing by the way, but that's a story for a different video tying your hair up, keeping it compact keeping it. You know preventing it from being dragged around and rubbed against itself, and things is a great way to prevent a lot of damage on especially the lengths and ends of your hair. So what i've been doing is i have been putting my hair up in just a super quick messy bun, with a scrunchie made out of a really slippery material, preferably you want to go something that is similar to silk or satin, just very slippery smooth, nothing to Catch onto very little texture, plus the scrunchie makes the elastic a little bit softer. So it's not! You won't get as much of an indent in your hair. What i do is, i just literally grab my hair and i will alternate between doing low buns and high buns, depending on my mood i'll just grab my hair fold, it in half fold it again, and that is that's literally all - and this also is great to Preserve curls, if you want to carry any curls over to the next day, i will usually then do it on top of my head, but sleeping with your hair up in some type of way, and for me personally, that is a bun with a scrunchie. Is a great way to prevent a lot of damage. The third thing is something i have been doing for years as well, and something that has proven to be amazing time and time again and that is to apply some oil in my hair before i go to bed, so i do kind of overnight oil treatments. I guess the way i do this is i take a couple of drops of hair oil and just apply those on my ends. Alternatively, i'll take a lot of the oil and apply it all throughout the lengths and ends of my hair and really saturate my hair in the oil. That is what i sometimes do when i'm about to wash my hair the next day, just to give it a little bit of an extra boost, and this really really really amps up the shine and moisture in your hair and just overall makes it look and feel Amazing, really, if you do not use oil in your hair, yet it is my number one biggest hair tip go for it. I use a diy hair oil. There is a recipe for it on my channel, but you could also use coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, of course, or just olive oil. Anything you have in the kitchen pretty much will work, but that is definitely something that is worth trying. If you have dry or damaged hair - and the last thing i have been doing, this is also huge - is to do overnight curls, i absolutely love heatless overnight curling methods, it works um. Basically, you wet your hair with water, potentially a little bit of setting lotion, and then you twist your hair into some type of spiral, curly shape, and then your hair dries throughout the night. And when you wake up, you will have beautiful curls, and this protects your hair in several ways. First of all, of course, it leaves it nice and compact and tied off and protects it, especially if you cover it with a sub scarf, which is often recommended when doing heatless waves or curls. And the second reason is that you then don't have to use heated hair tools to make your curls in the morning, because you will already have beautiful overnight heatless curls. They are overall, a much safer way to curl your hair, much more hair friendly, much less damaging. My preferred overnight, curling method at the moment is the bathrobe curl. You want to make sure that your hair isn't wet it's just damp. Your hair needs something to dry out of, but you definitely don't want it to be wet because the hair needs to have dried before you take out the curls. This leaves you with beautiful beachy style. Waves takes just literally seconds to take out in the morning, and it has been consistently good on me, so this is definitely my favorite way to do overnight. Heatless curls and i have been able to almost completely replace my curling iron, just by you know, calculating in when i need to do my heatless curls, even while running a youtube channel. So this is definitely something that i recommend and i usually do my hair in heatless curls on the days when i'm not washing my hair, so i will alternate between having straight hair of the one day and then curls the next day, and that is it guys. Those are the steps i take to make my hair healthier and protect it overnight, so that i wake up with nicer hair than i went to bed with. So i really hope you enjoyed this video guys. I found it helpful if you did don't forget to give a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for loads, more beauty and lifestyle content. Carolin Meyer: 1. do not sleep with wet hair 2. sleep with hair up 3. apply oil before going to bed 4. overnight curls only

Joy K Webber: Putting your hair in a satin/silky bonnet or scarf would probably be better than putting it in a bun or braid. It would protect the hair more and keep more of the good oils on your hair and off your pillowcase. My hair has been doing a lot better since I started sleeping with a bonnet every night. I dont get as much split ends and damage.

Mina La: Sleeping on a satin pillow case has been a life changer for both hair and skin! Cotton can be really drying and satin helps keep the moisture in. It also regulates temp and is so soft!

gingygeo: Heatless curls are a game changer. I basically do the same thing as you, one day of nice, fresh straight hair, and the next day - heatless curls. I absolutely love your tutorials, they helped me a lot, especially when experimenting during lockdown, haha :)

aurielMoon: Eh, my hair is very wavy, and I find that sleeping on a satin pillowcase with wet hair brings the waves all the way up to the roots and turns some of those 2c waves into 3a curls. My hair doesn't respond well to heavy oils; the most I usually do is a light glaze/scrunch in the morning to tamp down any escaped fly-aways. It really depends on your hair, and finding what works best for you! Besides, I'm too lazy to defuse upside down after hair washing days XD

Keri Dinsmore: this video came at the perfect time! I'm trying to grow my hair out and keep it from breaking up around my hairline

Stephanie Hill: Thanks for the good tips! And yes, putting oil in your hair every night makes such a difference, especially in its shine. My issue with the overnight curls is that I don’t get the overall volume I do with a blow dryer and curling iron. Does anyone know how to fix this?

EmmaAppleBerry: For anyone interested in having long hair heres what i do and maybe youll learn something new or get ideas for your own hair/health. My hair is -butt length - virgin hair aka no colour or previous colour/treatment, i dont use any products -naturally blonde straight, & fine but theres a lot of it so it appears thick. - i only use shampoo conditioner & rosehip oil on my hair. - i never use any heat including hair dryer. - dont cut or trim my hair its very simple if your want to grow your hair dont cut it! - unless your hair is super dead from bleaching or just poor self control/discipline then then theres no point keeping it but then only then should you trim/cut it - dry hair isnt dead and split ends wont kill you or ruin the rest of your hair theyre natural & when your hair is your desired length then you can trim any split ends and continue to nourish and moisturise you hair to prevent as many split ends but try to accept the fact that everyone has them to some extent - hair length isnt just environmental or your own decision its influence by a lot of things just as your hair type is, including genetics. If you live in a hot climate its likely you have more body hair overall and that your hair grows faster. If your hair has short growth cycles genetically then it may be harder for you to grow it and take longer dont give up! Even if you have 'perfect' hair your hormones and possible pregnancies menopause etc will effect it learn the natural rythm of your body and listen to it. Genetically some people will have clear skin no matter what they do to it and others will have blemishes even with 5 star treatment this goes for every factor in life but also applies to your hair some peoples hair just stays attached to their scalp longer and some peoples hair will end its life cycle at mid back length and never stick around longer. Just focus on making your health and habits better than before and sustain them. - i dont swim in chlorinated pools or salt water. Freshwater creeks rivers ponds lakes are fine but i avoid the others where possible but if you cant then try rinse your hair and limit the amount of time its exposed to harsher conditions not just water but wind and sun etc. - eat well drink plenty of water its a cliche because it works and its true id you cant build your health from the inside no amount of outside tampering will make it better -take vitamins if you are in a very stressful or poor time in your life or just need a boost their are hair skin and nail vitamins but you can just get zinc or magnesium or if you want to upgrade a multivitamin try prenatal vitamins. - get a blood test and check your vitamin mineral etc levels for any deficiencies if you are really struggling if its safe or snart for you to do so if you have no issues then this isnt necessary more of an extra or last resort for overall health. - I wash my hair usually 3 hours minimum before bed this gives it time to be mostly dry and overnight it rests spread over and behind me on my pillow. - depending on the season and also how much ive sweat changes the frequency of hair care. I wash my hair every 3 days although longer if i can manage. -Between washes i add rosehip oil from ears down either a lot as mentioned in video usually a day before washing or over the bottom quarter to third of my hair where it starts to thin/feel drier and do that every day or two. In summer when i sweat everyday in 35 degree temps i rinse my hair in cold water usually without removing the braid and massage my scalp i try to avoid hit water on my skin and hair unless im sick or its winter night. In which case ill have it as cool as i can manage. Even in such instances i always spend the laat few minutes of a shower with cold water on my face and hair until they are both very cold to the touch. If i find that cold water is not enough to feel refreshed i use cold brewed herbal tea as a rinse once ive gently squeezed the cold water out of my hair when the showers been turned off i use expired tea bags i prefer mint for its cooling effects but you can use anything something stimulating for blood flow or energy or something like chamomile or lavender for sleep. I pop the teabag in a jar i keep in the shower and fill it with cold water and leave it for at least a day if not 3 days and you can usually use the same teabag twice although the second brew is usually weaker its enough to still feel refreshing and destressing. Just make sure to gently squeeze the shower water out then hang your head upside down and get the tea on your scalp as much as possible then your ends if you can do not rinse or squeeze out the tea water consider it like a leave in treatment and let it air dry and enjoy the fragrance and specific herbs effect. If you are worried about the tannins staining you clothing you can keep your hair in a shower cap or in a towel until its absorbed the excess water. Ive never had issues with staining or anything though and my bathroom towels bedding and clothing is mostly all white of various cotton linen and wool materials. - I avoid hair styles that are tight or pull on the scalp or stress the hair. My favoured hairstyle is a middle parted french braid distributes the weight over the entire head and keeps the hair from tangling (think rapunzel from tangled style) and i usually try to leave it completely down and loose for a day after washing it to give my hair/scalp a break and do it can fully dry. - I protect my hair from the sun by avoiding the sun (not easy in australia) checking the uv and scheduling outdoor activities during low uv times usually within 2 hours of sunrise or sunset & wearing hats when i do go outside and if possible tucking my hair into the the hat. Thanks for coming to my ted talk im sure ive missed some stuff and theres a lot of obvious common sense things ive mentioned but sometimes we all need a good reminder. Remember youre more than just your outside appearance and you should be doing such things for yourself out of love and better health not for appearance sake or insecurity/self loathing. Theres a difference only you can make. Dont force yourself to fit into anothers shoes just look for your personal cinderella shoe.

Louise Dolloff: I use a silk pillowcase, my hair is too short for a bun. Another thing that helps with your hair is to make sure you are not anemic. Low iron levels in the blood can contribute to split ends in the hair

Linda Way: Thanks Lucy, I love your videos. Always easy, stylish and fun!! ❤️

Emiel Terzieff-Godefroy: your hair oil is life-changing! i have been using your DIY hair oil and for the first time in my life, my hair is healthy and shiny and easy to work with i have a natural curly, thick, dry and frizzy hair. now it's bouncy and happy thanks to you

Emma Williams: I don't know if I'm just bad at doing buns, but my hair is very straight and very fine and just doesn't want to stay up in a bun, especially when I'm moving around at night. I've started putting my hair in two loose braids and making sure not to tie it too tight at the bottom. My hair doesn't even really need to be brushed a second time in the morning. It's great.

Horse Enthusiast: I like to sleep with my hair in two braids, or with the front bits in rag curls and the back in one braid. I still get split ends, but definitely not as many, and it keeps my hair wavy (or curly) and untangled.

Stephanie Morey: I use a velvet scrunchi and put my hair up on top, this helps with preventing breakage and adding volume. You're great!

Ivy is Dead: Hair stylist here. The ideas are good, they do help, HOWEVER, some consideration for maximum efficiency: - Tie the hair before sleep: be careful with HOW you do it, dont make a high tight bun. Ideally, you should choose a medium tension braid over a bun, not that buns are bad, but the braid is a little more gentle to the hair. - Overnight oil treatments: they are GREAT. For a more light (superficial) protection, a normal styling leave in oil is good. Deep moisturizing/nutrifying treatments should be done with EXTRA VIRGIN OILS ONLY. For these, you can put the oils in the scalp too, so that the hair folicule can absorb the nutrients too, the only oil you SHOULD NEVER PUT ON YOUR ROOTS is coconut oil. It can create blockages in the folicules and your skin. Coconut oil is a good friend to your hair, it just cant go on the roots. Jojoba, olive and castor for roots are the best options and you can make your own mix, just mix the oils at the application time. Try not to mix a big batch, mix only the amount necessary to coat your hair. - Overnight curls: it's a case by case situation. It can be great for people with healthy, strong, virgin hair. But for people with coarse, dry, damaged, porous hair, IT'S A NO NO. These types of hair are too sensitive and prone to breakage. These types of hair actually do better with heat styling. The tips are pretty solid, and other than adapting them for your type of hair, there's not much to add. If i could give one tip of my own: get satin or silk pillowcases. They help with the hair frizz, shine and reduce damage. They are also really good for the skin.

Maya Alm: Just a heads up, oil in itself don't add moisture. It is in it's name, it's oil not water. If your hair feel like it needs moisture, you can use oil to help seal moisture in by adding oil to wet or slightly damp hair. Edit to add: I do this especially in the winter months when the air is more dry, I dampen my ends in the morning and add a light oil like almond oil and it helps with the dryness and prevent split ends.

Amanda Cagle: Be careful with long-term sleeping with your hair up, you could get traction alopecia from even the minor strain on your hair being held up.

Alexis Negron: I've got 2c/3a curls. I sleep with my hair flipped over and in a cotton scarf. Satin doesn't stay on because I'm a rough sleeper. I've found not tying it and just letting the scarf keep it up has been better for my hair. It's definitely gotten longer. I may use the oil tip, but sparingly as my hair gets oily if I use too much

Eleonore Bon: When I sleep with wet hair I wake up with the best curls! Never had any issues, but I have very thick and strong hair, so I can be a little rough. Funnily enough, my hair doesn’t really tangle either.

Grozmeister E: If I do anything with it like braiding or putting it up it will always keep the shape the next morning. For braiding it means that it's gonna be uneven and krimpy (because part of my hair always loosens up over night or the elestic will slide up or out) and for putting it up it means that I will wake up with the most ridiculous volume at the roots. If I do a low bun I will either wake up without the elastic or my hair will still have a dent where I "folded" it. Not a fan of sleeping with "done" hair ^^

BookNeko: I have curly hair naturally and I found the rare times I do go to bed with wet (or even damp) hair it actually ruins the curls by making them flat more like waves. Even if my hair is dry the curls do flatten when I sleep but not nearly as bad and I just put a curl reviver in my hair in the morning. Before anyone says anything about tying my hair up at night to save the curls I cannot stand having my hair tied up at night in anyway. (I have to put my hair up for work anyways so they then do get ruined but still on my days off I like having my hair down)

Brena: To be honest, my hair looks and feels healthier after I have stopped using oils. My hair used to break a lot and look really dry while using different kinds of oils (mainly jojoba, coconut and olive). It's weird...

Natasha Celina: I love heartless curls! They’re so much better than hot irons, these are awesome tips!

Pippin: I get a lot of breakage whenever i sleep with either a plait/braid or when i tie my hair up (with a silk scrunchie) or just put it in a bun so sometimes i just sleep with my hair down but that causes a lot of split ends. Does anyone know what i could do to prevent any breakage and split ends?

Naomi: Sleeping with my hair up or even a lose braid gives me headaches. Then again I have what some call super long hair (it's just below my waist).

It's Related to Minecraft: Woah? I didn't know texture can damage my hair. Thank you for the information! ❤

Helen: How damaging would you say overnight pin curls or foam rollers curls are to the hair? Does it all depend on the set? The products you use?

Rachel E: Anytime i had slept with wet hair, i got sick. I have been using caster oil. I cant use it too much because washing it out annoys my scalp, so once a month i make sure to remember to add it in

Artic Den: I like sleeping with a french braid. I find it more comfy for laying on my back.

Ashley Guthrie: Sleeping with wet hair is always when my hair looks best but I hate it's bad for it

PandaCat: Does anyone have any tips for someone with really really thick hair? Any hairstyles to keep hair up but also healthy? I have a sensitive scalp and live in a tropical climate so putting or leaving my hair up is quite painful but necessary so i don't overheat (i only recently started growing my hair out long- I've only ever had short hair until now) so any tips will be welcome!

Danielle M Hall: Shout-out to all the people who were taught that sleeping with wet hair would kill you. My curl pattern means my hair takes hours to air dry and it will not dry overnight. It's a guaranteed cold.

MyLoVeLyMaN: Omg I love your mug! I agree, I always sleep with hair tied and it's the best. I Don't find oils beneficial at all on me. Prefer pre shampoo treatments with conditioner, yolks, honey to add moisture and shine.

Raya's ASMR: The title shocked me for a second ngl lol You're glowing though Lucy

Sarah Cameron: Totally agree with your routine, but I personally can't do over night oil my face/pillowcase turn in to an oil slick after one night.

Isabella Pattinson: Great tips!! You look amazing in the video.

Sharknado: This video was so useful and I love your hair

Julz Alta: I do the same except putting my hair up because with my very straight hair it won't stay up if loosely tighten and doing overnight curls (I just don't like it). I use drugstore hair oils because I've been told some oils can be irritating (olive oil in my memory is one of them ?) and I'm too lazy to learn which one so I take the preformulated ones for hair before combing it. I don't know if it makes a very big difference as I do not have hair that is prone to split ends but I do wake up with a lot smoother hair than if I sleep with wet or unconditioned hair, that's for sure !

Hansika Rawat: Amazing tips

Yazmín Córdova: Yay amazing tips I love ur videos!! ^^"

Francie: Love and miss these types of videos. ❤️❤️ I use all these tips. Do you still use tea rinses?

AKANKSHA GUPTA: Early squad♥️...Such a helpful video...I love how u look aur bangs compliment u soo well.. i wish i had such bangs too

Amy Slingsby: What about brushing? I was told to go back to using a natural brush and give my hair a good, gentle brushing before bed. But I’ve read that over-brushing is a cause of split ends and breakage. I think it distributes oils, natural and added. But is it damaging? Yikes!

faces ncharcoal: I typically sleep with wet hair bc it doesn’t get as frizzy...when I shower in the morning my hair goes insane. Does anyone know how to combat this?

Renee Head: Hi, do you cut your bangs yourself?? They are so cute and exactly the style I want for myself. love the video

Wyatt Crane: A word of advice: look for fortified shampoo for fast hair growth.

Kikaluti: so if I can't sleep with wet hair, how does it work with the overnight curls, witch should be wet or dammed? is it because they will be curled up that it doesn't damage the hair?

Universal Hobo: you've always been a big sis for me!

Rassia Melo: I like to shower before dinner so that I am washing off dirt from the day; but, I still have time for my hair to dry completely before bed.

Shivee: I get a lot of acne so applying oil before sleep seems counterproductive for me

Elise Scarpa: If I use oil on my hair at night..it would take me 3 times a day to get it out.

Irma Velasco: I looooove your hair because is amazing

Gabe Martinez: there is no such thing as terminal length hair oils help moisturize your hair and keep it strong so it can grow and hair and nail gummies will help your nails and your hair grow stronger and thicker

Brigitta Moretti: I read shaved and got shook

Cath Rose: You have beautiful hair

Imma the chopsticks that Jin always carry: *Some people just open their hair or with wet hair, throw themselves in bed* No, don't tie your hair in a loose braid or bun before sleeping.

Andrea Plummer: Love that mug!!!

Dorothy Lisbon: I would suggest you look for fast hair growth fortified shampoo.

Lisa Ashworth: What hair oil do you use?

Its_ Me: Wait Whaaaaat!! Hey! are you a relative of Lalisa Manoban? Someone should've told you how much you look like her❤❤❤ videos with such beauty are definitely not for skipping. Thanks for the tips

Kaja Magdalena: omg the mushroom mug aaaaaaaaa now i neeed one

S Aashna: It seems...you are going to trim your bangs soon

Ana Raquel Novoa: I can't use oil because I have oily scalp :/

1586brittc: Add sleeping on a satin or silk pillow case

Katarzyna Gajewska - Rogusz: There is s rule that oil used for your hair should match with your hair type/texture, for exapmle usually curly hair doesn't like coconut oil :)

aditi mishra:
