Hello and welcome to my channel or welcome back to my channel in today's video we're going to be doing a hair tutorial. So, if you're interested in learning, how i do my 1940s styled wigs stay tuned, don't forget to like and subscribe and share this video with anyone. You think might find it interesting. So for this hair you're going to need sponge rollers clips a brush, hairspray a wig, a wig head and a steamer, so i am resetting this wig, which means it was already pre-styled prior. This is the first time doing that and so to detangle and release the old curls. I am steaming it um this week is a year old and i've only styled it the one time. So i am brushing out all of the knots and stuff because i do tease the very last row for volume and to give the wig shape. So the bottom was pretty tangled, but that was because i teased and backcombed the bottom with hairspray. So now you're going to want to section into two sections, so you can really get under that bottom layer and comb, everything out the steaming as you go. Of course it makes it really easy and quick if you're, starting from scratch. Of course, you'll be skipping. All of that, but this is the hair i didn't care for it to be particularly bone straight, because i'm going to go right into curling after this. So for the bottom rows you want to start with. The smallest rollers you have mine are the blue ones, um. The blue, yellow green, then red and that's the order from smaller to large and i started out with the yellow, but you really want around the nape of it to be as tight as possible, so you do want to go in with the blue. I have toddlers who like to play with my sponge rollers. So unfortunately, some of them have been ruined, damaged whatever and so i'm having to use whatever rollers have survived them, but yeah in a perfect world. You would have the blue ones all on the bottom and then you would go up to the yellow, so i am doing that here and focusing the blue rollers to the nape, and the reason you want these to be so tight is because these are going to Be the foundation for the bump like again, essentially they're, going to be the cushion for which the top row rolls around. So this is not for aesthetics. This is simply for structure, so that is why we roll with the tightest curls on the bottom. For the second row, when you start rolling, you do not want to go all the way to the top, so you want a smooth flat base. This is how i like to wear my hair, because i do wear hats, so it makes it to where there's not too much volume at the crown of the head, and it makes the hat sit nice and flat if you notice. At this point, i am still rolling the hair directly back. I am not following a particular curl pattern. This is just the way that i've been rolling. My wigs since i started attempting vintage wig hairstyles, so i this is just how i do it. It'S the easiest, and that way i don't have to remember a fancy setting pattern. I basically roll all of the hair towards the back and then the sides in front. I roll towards the side and up so you will see. I will go all the way to the base of the wig when we get to the sides and not worry about those being flat, but i also use bigger rollers for that section. So that way the curls aren't so tight and i can really manipulate them to frame my face later so now we're getting to the sides like i was talking about, so you want to brush this out smooth and then you want to section it the best you Can i would have used green ones for these, but i ran out of those so i'm using the largest, which are the pink rollers and, like i said these are going to be rolled towards the side and i'm going all the way up to the top and Not stopping at a flat base for this, because i do want to basically style the front where i can do. Pin curls or some sort of like a s wave or you know the sky's the limit determining on what you are capable of doing. I'M not capable of doing much, but i do like to do these in larger rollers or looser curls, and this is also the part of the wig where i do put the least amount of hairspray, because i don't use hairspray in my own hair. So i don't want this to be super stiff. It needs to be malleable, so i can do blending with my hair and i can get as close to seamless as possible now it's time to steam. So i go ahead and give all of the curls a good steam and, right after i am done doing this, i will put a plastic grocery bag over the top of the wig and steam it some more. I tie the bag at the bottom to trap. In all of that heat, and then i wait for the bag to be completely cool to the touch like cold. Then i remove the bag and let the wig air dry overnight. Now you can set the wig under a dryer or dry it with a handheld dryer, but i find that setting it overnight works better. I did that in the last tutorial for the first time and realized that i don't like that method at all compared to letting air air dry. So it is the next day it's time to let the curlers down. I am in my pajamas and i'm wearing shorts because later on, it might look like i am not wearing any pants, but i am, i am taking out all of the curlers. They are nice and dry. I actually waited till the evening now, i'm separating the curls with my fingers a little before i go in and brush it. I don't use a comb for this process at all. I just use a very coarse bores brush with a softer side, which i use for smoothing the crown and a very coarse side which i use for teasing the bottom row and then shaping the top section, and you will see me do that here now. I am separating the top row from the bottom and going around and teasing and hairspraying as i tease i'm adding some hairspray so that way i can get a good hold on the bottom because, like i said earlier, this is for construction purposes. Now i am brushing with the core side of the brush and brushing over my hand to get that really rounded bump on the ends of the hair. And then i am pinning in place and i will go back with brushing and pinning and spraying brushing, printing and spraying over and over and over until i get the shape that i want. I do go back and spray this later. I don't show it here because i actually forgot, but then i do go back and spray all of the section with my got to be glue, freeze spray, and this is fantastic spray. I don't use a lot, so i've had this one bottle of spray for at least four years now, so that just lets you know how much i get out of it and i still have at least half a can left and so yeah just keep brushing that Hair over your hand, to really shape it and smooth it over and then spray it some more, and hopefully you can get a good idea of how this is done. This is only my second time doing this hairstyle on this wig, so i'm very much a beginner as well, and i figured if i can do it - you guys can do it too. So here i am just smoothing - and it's just very repetitive and you're just going to keep molding the hair and playing with it over and over and over until you get the desired shape and that's why having the tightest curls on the under layer is so important Because you do not want it to hang down or for the curls to drop so the tighter, the better and then i'm just gon na speed this up. So that way we can get through it, because this is a pretty long tutorial. But i hope that the length means it's detailed, so while i'm not an expert or really good at hair at all, i really wanted to add to the resources that are out there for black women or black people in general, because i just know that there isn't A lot for us out there, and so i am sharing what it is that i have been able to come up with and i'm hoping that you can take these tutorials and branch off and and make something of your own or even find this as a guide Or starting place for your own hair, styling and a vintage journey, if you will so i'm so glad that i can share my experiences with you and i look forward to seeing what you guys are able to come up with too, because i'm sure there's so much. I can learn from you, since i am grasping at straws at this point, so now we're going to get to the front of the hair and i actually like the natural like wave and s curve of this side of the hair. The first time i did this. I did not obviously put a wave in it, but this time i thought it would be really nice to put um a wave in it, because then it means that i don't have to leave out hair on this side of the wig, because that cute little finger Wave or s bend or whatever it's called would cover up my hairline in a very natural looking way. So i just went with it. That'S how the curl wanted to curl, and i thought it was a good opportunity to leave out less hair because the less hair, the easier it is to get styled and go so, like i said earlier, this is just going to be a lot of smoothing and Spraying and bending and manipulating - and you might have to keep going back over and over, but it's worth it, especially if you use lots and lots of hairspray. So that way, it does not move after you do all of this work, and then you just set it in the one time and you shouldn't have to do it again until a year later, depending on how you maintain your wig and at the end of this Video, i will leave some tips on how best to maintain your style, so that way, you're not having to restyle the wig, and all you have to do is wash your hair. Underneath the wig put on a wig cap and style, your bangs or, however much hair. You decide to leave out in the front of the wig, so back to smoothing and pinning spraying smoothing and pinning it is a never-ending task, but it's so worth it now. We are going with the fuller section of my bang that i usually leave out and this part of it isn't necessary to be done right now. You can actually do this part on your head, because this is where you want to blend your leave out anyway, but i decided to style this entire wig on the wig block. So that way i could make sure that you could see it all. I find it easier to do this because i can see the entire wig, whereas when it's on my head i can only see the front of my head, so i am doing it all right here, so you can see everything once i put the wig on my Head, i'm literally just plopping it on my head and then pin curling my bangs. If you haven't already, you can look at my 1950s half wig hair tutorial that i posted a couple months back. I will leave a card for this tutorial and you could definitely check it out after this video if the 1950s is more your style, i think that tutorial is really beginner friendly as well and has less manipulation and less teasing and curling than this one. So i think it'll be really good for you. If you're into this kind of hair styling, now we're going to give the wig one last spray before we let it dry and then pop it on our heads to see how it looks. And if the clips need to be lowered and readjusted for my head. Because i have not tried on this wig since i started styling it again so here it is i've already blended my leave out and i like the way that this hair looks so i'm taking the pins out. So i can put the hair net on the hairnet. Will essentially keep my hair in place so on a windy day, my hair won't move and gravity will not get to my curls and the style should stay intact for as long as possible. So now i'm putting that hair net on and then i will put the clips back in and spray it one last time so that the wig is molded to my head and all of the bends in the hair is exactly where i want it to be. On my head, since it's a little bit different than when it's on the block, so that concludes the making of this 1940s wig. I was going for sort of like a page boy, hairstyle, something that's kind of iconic for the time since i wanted it to be something that would uh be like an everyday look, something that can be glamorous, but also something that i can throw on with. Like a normal collared shirt like i'm wearing right now, um a couple things to note with this wig it does have a lot of shine to it because it isn't synthetic wig. So i do recommend that you use a little bit of cornstarch to cut down the shine and um. I only did that the first time i styled this wig, i didn't do the second time and i do believe that the hairspray adds more shine to it. So it did bring back the shine factor, so i'm probably going to add some cornstarch to a makeup brush to kind of dull the shine a little bit tips for making this hairstyle last make sure that you have some alligator clips or claw clips. Whatever you call these, i would get a pack from like the dollar tree specific for this wig. I would not only wear it with the hair net but store it with the hair net to help keep the shape and then, when you're not wearing it pop these things in to protect the bend and i'll show you so yeah you're going to want to continue To wear these in your hair, well in your wig when you're not wearing it and keep it on a wig head, a styrofoam wig head that you could probably get from any craft store or beauty supply store or order online and just keep it on. One of those to maintain the shape i had this hair for a year before i had to restyle it, so this is only the second time that i've restyled it. So this is a synthetic wig and it has texture in it. So that way it blends well with ethnic hair. I really really like the how affordable this wig was. I think it was under 20. It was 20 or less i'll. Leave the um information about this week in the description box below, because i do not remember, i do think i got good value for this week. A couple of the tracks are kind of like falling off and i'll probably have to sew that back on um. I didn't just go around because i knew i was going to be able to tuck it in and then like hairspray everything in place, so because i'm not constantly combing or brushing this hair. I don't really have to worry about that, but that is it for maintenance. I hope this was an easy tutorial. I hope that it would be very beginner friendly, but then also if you're, just not a hair person. Like me, i hope it would be convenient. This hair is so easy, especially as a content creator who likes to dress from several decades. Sometimes, when i'm creating content - and i have to do a transition between like a 1940s and 1950s - it's really easy to have these half wigs, where i can just pop one on and then pop one off and then i am in a different decade. So thank you. So much for watching, i truly appreciate it please like and subscribe to my channel if you'd like to have more tutorials like this one and sewing content, you can also follow me on instagram at serena underscore to follow me in real time as well as kofi, where I do upload sneak peeks of upcoming projects and i also for my supporters as an added little.
