I was scrolling through tik tok hair videos, the other day as i do, and i came across this. What is this about? Oh the denman brush the classic styling brush that i got in my hair kit in hairdressing school. I have used the denman brush to do a smooth straight blowout that, because of the ventilated plastic, bristles is very quick to execute, but recently it's had a user makeover. It'S now being used and going viral as the brush for curly hair this 80 year old brand. That hasn't really changed. Much from its original design is now being reinvented as a different type of tool. How freaking cool is that truthfully? I'Ve never tried it, because my hair isn't that curly. It is 100 wavy and absolutely not spirally. So after watching hours of these videos, i was left with a question: does this trendy technique work on wavy hair? That'S not that curly, and could it even potentially make our wavy hair the girls in the world with wavy hair? Could it make their hair and my hair look curlier we're about to find out? Let'S go so, as you can see, my hair is absolutely wavy. There'S no spiral curl. The crazy thing, though, with wavy hair, is that if you know how to work with it, and you know how to diffuse, how to scrunch it and how to apply your products, you can get a gorgeous gorgeous result, and i showed you a video on how to Do that before so i'm going to leave a link to that video in the description box below, because that's really going to help you if you have hair that dries super super frizzy, it's never smooth or or nice when it air dries and you're, not sure why It'S likely because your hair is just really wavy and you don't know how to style it. The first step in styling, wavy or textured hair is to make sure that the hair is extremely wet. Your hair needs to be pretty much soaked if it is dry at all, especially if you don't have defined curls. If you just have waves like me, you need the hair to be wet so that you can manipulate the shape of it before you start diffusing. Now that my hair is wet, i can start marinating it with curly hair products. It'S really important when working with curly or wavy hair that you are using curly hair products, this product that i'm going to be using is by a company called keratin. I really like their curly line. It works quite well on my hair texture. I have a pretty decent amount of hair density, but my individual strands are really fine, so i have very fine strands but like a medium level of thickness, i like to start by using a leave-in conditioner, especially because i have highlighted hair and the bleach has really Done a number to it, and then i go in with my curly gel now you can see when my hair is brushed out, that it looks like it's straight: wavy, hair, that's not up in the curlier levels, really do seem straight when it's wet and brushed out. So right now you would just think that i have straight hair and you would likely blow it out or whatever, but you can get amazing hair if you take the time to learn how to style it, and you will know if your hair is wavy, if it Air dries really frizzy and unruly or if you straighten it, and you hit some humidity or any type of water in the air, and it gets really really frizzy and puffy. That is like a dead giveaway that your hair is actually wavy and not straight all right. Let'S pull up tick tock now, let's see what they do today, i'm going to show you guys how to use the denman brush. I have the d3 7 row. This really helps define your curls and separate your curls into curl clumps. First, i'm going to show you how to brush coil you take your brush like this put the hair at the base of the brush and just start. Turning and watch it come down. The handle is truthfully. This was a little bit of a learning curve. I got it wrong quite a few times. I wasn't sure what i was doing wrong. I was getting my hair caught in the brush, but i quickly learned that you have to tilt the handle of the brush up, because you have to spiral the hair around the handle and the only real way to do. That is, if you tilt the handle of the brush up as soon as i got that it really started to work. It'S almost borderline shocking, because my hair is not curly. I am getting perfectly defined ringlets and when i tried finger coiling my hair before i never ever got these results, so that is pretty impressive. Another thing to make note of is that you want to brush your hair about 90 degrees from your head. You don't want to brush down and collapse your volume you want to brush up and spiral so that you get lift right at the root. Now, if you look at this part of my hair that i haven't done yet versus the hair that i have used, the denman brush on, there is a substantial difference. I am actually shocked because being someone that does not have curly hair, you saw my hair. It'S not super curly, just going through my hair with the brush in this way has given me ringlets now i don't want to speak too soon because we haven't diffused yet so let's do that next, but there is a substantial difference. Doing this versus just scrunching, just scrunching gives me a really disorganized wave, which is fine and really pretty anyways, but this really is giving me curls like it would, if i actually had a really curly hair texture, which i do not let's diffuse. So the first thing i'm going to do is i'm just going to flip my hair upside down and i'm going to scrunch just to really get that texture into my hair. The first technique that i always use is a hover diffuse where i go on high heat high speed and i hover the blow dryer around my entire head until i get it significantly drier, probably 60, even 70 dryer. I do this by hover diffusing. I start by doing it with my head upside down and as i get drier, i start flipping my hair from side to side and hover diffusing that way, once i've gotten my hair to a much drier state. That'S when i go in and i pump the dryer into my hair a little bit. You have to be really careful when you do this step, because you can start getting a lot of frizz. Sometimes i don't even do this and i just hover diffuse, but if i want to break the curls up a little bit and get even more volume, then i go ahead with this technique when my hair is 100 dry, that's when i take my hands - and i Just scrunch out the crunch, i'm just breaking up that cast so that my hair doesn't look hard. It looks really nice and soft and wavy a few hours have now passed. I don't like diffusing my hair to the 100 dry mark because i tend to get a lot of frizz. If i do that, so i always diffuse it to about the 90 dry mark and then i let it air dry. So it's been a couple of hours. You can see it is completely dry. Now i have to tell you that the denman brush technique does work and works exceptionally well. I did not expect it to work on wavy hair truthfully. I was going to tell you that this really only works when you are defining an already pre-existing coil pattern, but that is not the case. I really did get a substantial amount of definition. Now, you're probably wondering you know. All of this takes a long time. How long did it take for me? It added about 10 to 15 minutes on my curly hair routine, and that is a large part, because i was learning how to do it. I made a lot of mistakes along the way i wasn't keeping the brush handle in the right position as soon as i figured that out, it really did start going a lot faster. I think, if you do this every time you do your curly hair routine. It will probably take you an extra five to ten minutes depending on your density. Thank you guys so much for watching. If you have any questions, leave them in the comment section below i'll see you next week, bye

Cassytava: My grandmother taught me this in the late 1980’s. Definitely not a new technique, just a well kept secret.

surrendertoflow: I keep seeing the Denman used like this in videos but I found the Scrunch It brush WAY easier than the Denman to create serious coils that last for days (with gel and diffusing) in my naturally wavy hair. The Scrunch It is actually designed to make coils so it’s less awkward and more effective than Denman for that purpose. I seriously don’t understand why everyone isn’t using/talking about the Scrunch It brush because it was a game changer for me! My Denman went into storage as soon as I got the Scrunch It brush! You should check it out and tell people about it! (I’m not an influencer so no one would care what I say, lol)

Raven_the_warrior_Libra: I have curly on the bottom and wavy on the top. Been doing the curly girl method for two months and using this brush and doing this technique has helped my top layer become more curly.

Christina Pantazi: Hi Gabi Greetings from the UK. Just wanted to let you know that Ive tried this technique twice so far and it DEFINITELY works on my wavy hair texture too. Im so impressed with the results. For reference I have thick, frizzy dense wavy 2B hair. My waves naturally are wonky and unstructured I watched the technique from your video about 3 times to make sure . Your instructions and guidance were so clearly explained I couldnt really go wrong. Made sure I did this on soaking wet hair that was well lubricated with a leave in conditioner plus a hair oil. ( my hair type benefits from lots of moisture). The only thing I did differently was to glaze the curls with a curl creme gel AFTER I had formed them with the Denman. Takes me about 20 mins to do on carefully sectioned hair then 15 mins to hover diffuse. I let it air dry the rest of the way. Has worked so well for me. My hair looks so defined. Many many thanks. Your channel is so good and you have a very relatable style with relevant content for all us wavies whether we choose to smooth and straighten or embrace the wavy texture. So helpful. Keep up the good work Gabi and thanks again.

Laurel Menne: We did this in the 60’s before we went to the beach. Some magazine said we would get more natural lighting (and damage) from our Sun-In if we had curls. And yes, lightner and gel turned to a goopy mess in the sun. Great memories though. Thanks for the updated version.

Gina Zedowski: Hi Gabi, looks awesome! I have an off-topic question I have very similar hair to yours; I have an appointment next week for a keratin express to get me through the next couple months of humidity. What are your thoughts on that procedure for wavy fine hair? My stylist says she works the iron in a curvy fashion to promote fullness.

SKG: I have an in between curly and wavy hair. I feel like it's so much more work/time to have my hair curly but its a lot healthier not using so many heat products. Thanks for the video. You are beautiful!!!

Devon Jeter: You are my wavy hair twin, so I am glad to know this will work on wavy hair! My density is coarse though so I am hoping it will still work well with a different texture

Dajana Vidakovic: The Denman brush is a miracle tool. The best tool to define my daughters large curls, but also the fastest way to style my very straight curtain bangs. :D Love the Denman. <3

Helen L: I have a combo of wavy and some curly areas. My hair is fine with thin/ low density. I have definitely found if I dry or even scrunch style upside down my hair gets frizzy and definitely messes up my curl pattern. I can scrunch when applying products but have to redo the back where I have cowlick. I also do better with a gel after leave in conditioner in terms of hold and anti-humidity. The new Verb Foam Gel works pretty well for me. I also like the Tre Luxe line. For heavy duty anti humidity hold Ouidad Anti humidity gel. All these need to be scrunched out with a lightweight hair oil unless you like the hard cast feel and look.

Music Lover: Said it before, and just for reference say it again. We are hair twins. Same fine hair medium density wavy hair. Although some of my strands are curly, some are straight, most are wavy and gets frizz and humidity will reverse a perfect blow out. When my hair was long I would twist it and let it air dry into beachy waves. My hair really grew a lot during the summer so recently started to let it air dry again. I now use a leave-in curl conditioner and finger twist my locks into ringlets. Looks great the first day. Second day has a lot of body with a big wave and still like it. Will have to try the Denman technique to see if the curl has more lasting power.

Allysa Lee: I ABSOLUTELY love you and you are my new hair best friend. I said it once and I’ll say it again, 33 years of not knowing properly how to manage and style my hair type (which is wavy fine ) left me doing lots of hot tool damage and updos so it’s so wonderful to learn what I’m learning from you, better late than never I always say, plus my 15 year old has hair like mine and I send her these videos lol at least she can learn at a young age properly how to “deal” with her hair lol, my 11 year old has dead straight fine yet thickish hair like my mother did so the fine hair is def a family trait no matter how it comes out!

Jade: Someone’s momma or grandma most have told them about this technique. We did this back in the day with a brush handle.

Ric Calendar: Gabi, Do you prefer this technique over the Tymo? I think the Tymo would be faster, however, you don't get a curl on the very ends unless you go back and bend them in. I love the tymo, and have about the same wave pattern as you.

Natural Woman: I tried with a vent brush and got the same effect. My hair is fine though, so can't say it'll work for everyone. I'm not into Shirley Temple ringlets so when my hair is dry I carefully separate them. I can't wait to use my brush upside down! Didn't think of that. Thanks!

buddy holly: My aunts used to do this to our hair when we were kids just using a comb and letting it air dry without product. I dont think you need a fancy denman brush. I started doing this in the spring just using my hands. I would get nice big loose curls that were shiny and not frizzy. But i guess it depends on your hair

Antonia Rebelo: Wow, it turned out so beautiful! I love your hair like this. Thanks for sharing this

Missy: I don't own a special brush but I will definitely try this technique out with my regular brush. I have thinning hair as well as curly underneath and wavy on top and I always have such a hard time dealing with styling it so I just let it air dry and throw it up on a pony and forget about it. This technique is a well kept secret and a game changer for sure. Looking forward to doing this on my next wash day!

AC Haley: Great vid! I am going to try this tomorrow. I have the brush and my hair a bit curlier than yours but have just been scrunching…and love that …so this may be the holy grail! Thanks Gabby gorgeous! ❤

M WALTERS: Okay okay! You're amazing! You're always a joy in my life. Just a really great teacher I thank you so much ✝️

Yolanda Thomas: I use my Denman brush with the handle facing down. Section hair from ear to ear, and pile on top of head, twirl the bottom sections of hair - in the bristles - and slowly pull the brush out of your hair (going toward your waist). Take the hair from the top of your head, and twirl sections of hair around the bristles of the brush, twirling downward until you have a head of spirals. Let air dry..then run run fingers through to loosen the spirals.

Beach’s: This is totally my hair!! Fine but lots of it, and air drying looks horrible because of the wave and frizz. I need to try this!!

Person: i do this technique with a rat-tail / weaving comb and I love it, it gives definition, and really help with frizzing issues when i airdry it!

Amber Zec: My hair was always super straight..now that I'm older it's very wavy/curly when wet but no matter what I do it either falls flat or looks oversprayed/gelled/moussed lol

Perla: 2 things 1, how do you look so different in every video, it’s amazing 2, if you have straight or wavy hair you can twist it (not too tight) but then you have to hold until dry which is very time consuming

The Red Cat: Curly girls do this with their fingers. Actually I styled my hair like this on Sunday. It helps me to create less volume. If I want more volume, I twist my hair around my finger.

twice blest: I have 2c/3a and have tried finger twisting. Curly hair takes a long time to dry with this method because the hair is clumped and I end up with frizz, especially the next day.

Erin C: Ooohhh! I have wavy hair too! This looks awesome. I’m gonna get this brush and try this! What is the difference between the 9 row and 7 row brush?

Ann Johnson: Your video explained my hair totally. Going to try this!

lisa: I just found and subscribed. My poor baby girl who is 30 suffering hairless, you had very helpful things that I will be forwarding to her You are absolutely beyond gorgeous!

Glam Girl Gabi: Thanks for watching hair besties! If you want to learn even more about how to style wavy hair, I recommend watching this video next: Your FINE FRIZZY hair is WAVY/CURLY and you have no idea… https://youtu.be/-V2-OFf7L4U If you are interested in the products that I used, you can find all of the links in the description box.

Jesus is Lord: My hair is fine and thin but a little curlier than yours. My hair dries to fast to use the brush this way but I love the idea! I definitely need this brush however!

Jasmine Alicea: You’re pretty late to the game of curly hair and the denman brush. I’m glad that more hair professionals are becoming more familiar with textured hair and what works best for curly kindly hair

Ms Nicole: Fun video! I dont own a Denman yet. Does it need to be a D4? Or would a D3 work exactly the same? Thoughts?

Alicia Plaza: I am glad that I finally have found others with the same hair type as myself.

B. Haynie: I've been using a Denman brush for decades. It's the only brush that works well for my thick hair.

silvia herrera: I was going to ask about that brush you used on a previous video. I was searching for it. I liked how it grab and smooth your hair .

m mallow: Have you tried the AuBonacci styler root brush for curly hair? It seems expensive and not sure wit is worth it.

Tquirkyt: ❣️You and I have THE SAME hair type so I really appreciate your videos‼️❤️

Dante Velasquez: You do have spiral waves. When it was dry its 2B waves. I have to try this on myself! I have 3B hair but my roots like to act like they are wavy and I have a hard time getting them to curl up properly so it gets so flat at the roots and I don’t get volume on the top which drives me crazy.

crowe286: You could use number of brushes similar to a classic denman. But your hair in all honesty looked great just scrunched.

Dee Silver: ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Kristen Nelson: This is my EXACT hair type!

Linda Walker: Thanks for your help, lady!! I have thin hair, and appreciate it! Did you give us the name of your LIPSTICK {Caps so anybody else looking for lipstick name can find it easier}

Tabetha Ray: Hey, you did an amazing job. Love it.

Corina B.: You can do this with any brush or comb, you don't need an expensive Denman ;)

Exploring Canada: This almost seems too easy. Speaks volumes about your teaching style! Voila!

Anita Cooke: I have noticed you didn’t use any heat protection even though you used high heat in your diffuser!!

Aubyn McClanahan: My hair is very very dark brunette I have a lot of gray coming in around my face and crown. I love your color and the “highlight color too. Do you share that information?

crazy Tracy: Have u ever considered doing a makeup tutorial? Ur makeup looks fantastic in every vid. I could use somma ur tips, esp ur eye makeup

JM BAL: You are so pretty! Your hair looks gorgeous when straight/ or wavy / curly!! Whatever you do , works

Rene Pena: My hair is layered. Would this brush still work for me?

Emily R.: Looks great! However, I'm not patient enough to do this.

Turra Gorman: Beautiful curls but for my fine hair it is a no go

Just a girl: your so pretty and I have a similar style as you, would you share your skin and beauty upkeep routine, you are aging backwards in my opinion and we all need the help we can get <3

beatriz Morgan: Absolutely beautiful gorgeous!!!

Bev Harrie: Can you use the wooden handle denman brush?

Mary Ann McKinney: OMG!! Can't wait to try!!!

marchell : you looks so pretty with ur hair i really love it so much❤❤❤❤❤

Yvonne Sylten: I used to use these brushes but I have a lot of fine wavy hair and the whole rubber bristle holder would pop out of the handle. Not good!! I don’t buy these anymore

Diana A.: Hi I love your video's. I love your lashes. What brand are you wearing?

Midlife Maniacal Mayhem: shouldn't this work with ANY brush with a handle?

《Nelle911》: Can you do a video on your eyeshadow?

Linda Konkiewicz: Time for me to go find a Denman brush!

Snow White: Thank you so much

Annalisa Nunez: I think your wavy tutorial is better than this one but still beautiful as usual

Coco Loco: I need your nose jewelry can you tell me where its from?!

Toni Milstead: Looks good but who has that much time to spend doing it?

Christine Carter: Couldn’t you do this with any brush?

SOBO1995: Sorry, but I feel like the end result just looks greasy and lacks any volume.

D J: And why can't you do with other brushes??? Or a stick?

Carrie Walsh: Love your videos. You are so gorgeous. May I ask where your bracelets are from? So pretty

Rangini Jeyatharan: Thank you

Kay Manuel: Who has the time to do this?!! Not me

ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ: You're using it like a curling wand, which is not what she did.

Cee: Nothing new this is the only brush used from the 70's to 90's

Beddy Tear: It doesnt look great though looks like dirty hair to me

Debbie Koonce: Way to much work but looks good on you

Olechka C.: but damn it takes for freaking evere :-( i have no patience. and doing it every night ahhhhh yes i wash hair every day. if you dont it startes to stink it is grossssss
