Hi guys welcome to a new tutorial. Today we are going to know how to draw air. You always ask me how I draw air, what I do, how I make them so flowy, so I decided to put all your dubs together in this kind of video. So I decided that I didn't want it to make it so long and air, it's very, very complicated guys, it's a very long part of the painting process, probably one of the most longer for me, because I use a lot of Flyers. So I decided to uh divide the tutorial in two parts, so today we are going to see or we are going to cover the sketching bar and in the next one. I'M going to talk you about the coloring and how I manage the layers and this kind of things. So I prepared different kind of art styles because I wanted to cover like some of them: uh, probably the more common ones. If you want to see more examples, or if you want to see a more detailing tutorial, you can go ahead to my patrons because there you're going to find like two or three tutorials about air. So if you want to see more hairstyles or this kind of or different things, so let's go there and you will find it today. I decided to put, as example like the straight air short air, uncollected air and I'm going to talk about how you can gain more movement or how you can make it more Dynamic, save that let's go to procreate and, let's start painting. So the first thing you have to take in mind is how to place correctly, the airline you know guys Airline is going to make or face, or it's going to affect or face to make it more proportionate or not. And this is my sound like something not very you know important, but it is because, if you place the forehead too big or the forehead to short, your character is not going to look good. You know in terms of proportions and also the air. It'S going to look very, very weird, because it's going to look like it's not a well placed, you know what I mean it you're going to have like a short forehead and then you're going to have the head coming along the air brows. You know what I mean so um, it's important. You know how to place this. I already have a tutorial about how to place these kind of things for faces, but knowing where to place, the airline is very easy. Just draw the line, put some color on it and see if this is some sizes that you are feeling comfortable with and if you didn't just change them and make it more affordable to your style, I'm going to start painting the straight air. I made like a very quick sketch of how they are or how the hairstyle is going to work, and you see guys one thing that I have very clear when I paint air - or I do earth Styles - is that I work in the same or with the Same references from the faces, for example um. You see that I started the air the Earth style in the middle of the face like like the center of the face. So I think it's very common uh not knowing these things, but I would really suggest to you guys to take or pay attention to this kind of references, because they are going to be very helpful for you also, when I plan a hairstyle, I want to have Things there, for example, I never use super use straight lines. I play with the gravity of my Earth style and also I try to work with Kerbal lines and make them super flowy, so pay attention to the lines. Uh lines are super important uh. So people they're going to understand better how your hairstyle is going. It'S not necessary to add like a full of lines, uh just a few of them uh, so people will see how their style is working. So this is super important guys, so pay attention to the gravity pay attention to how the Earth style is working with the body because, as you see, I also like to add some lines coming out of the air and also I want to - or I really like To add lines of air like strands of air, that they are interacting with the shoulders, as you can see here, and you see that I'm painting right now very roughly uh this air, I'm going to do the same with all of them, and I really want you Guys to pay attention to the edges, as you see, I am using a very textured brush for doing that. Uh, it's the Shale brush, it's from procreate and it's free. You already have it and I really like to add this kind of texture to it. Just because I don't like to you know see my uh air like applying it and this kind of stuff. So that's why I use that brush to make like these lines also to make like the strands that they are going out and they are giving movement to the Earth style itself. So now it's time to make it in the front faces um. You know guys from faces, they are super boring, so hairstyles can be like uh, like or friends, to make like the pose more Dynamic and to give more movement to it. I know that this hairstyle itself, the straight air it can can be very boring, but I really like to add some kind of different things that probably it's going to help you to make your portrait or your character look better. First, one is to play with the position of the ears, so I really want to play with that and I always put like one part of the air behind the shoulder and the other on the back of the shoulder. You know like hiding by the shoulder this way. Even I have some kind of symmetry. I am breaking this symmetry with this thing, so even it is not the most dynamic air or it didn't have too much movement. At least I am creating something interesting um. Also other things that I really like to do when I paint air - and I do air is like add again as the first one at the strands um for straight air and in front faces um. I would suggest guys to try to put movement with these loose strands, as I am marking here. It'S important not to add too much, but at least some of them so you're going to avoid to have like a portrait having like this a square shape or rectangular shape. You know it's boring um. If you add these things, your character is going to look much better. Now, it's time for the side profile picture, you know guys how its profiles are always super difficult and doing ears with this side profile, they're complicated, too um. The thing is: that's high profile also. It can be very boring because it's super vertical and you have to break this verticality with the air, so pay attention to the shapes, uh practice. Doing like this kind of Curves. Don'T you know this is going to help you to get loose with your traces and it's going to be better when you do like Earth Styles uh. This is where you're going to gain some uh, floneness or flowy air um, because I think it's very important that even you are doing super straight air uh at some kind of movement - and this is like my advice here and also try to make the air interact With the character you know just going through, like the shoulder over the shoulder and creating some new shapes uh, this way you're going to have more interesting Earth. Styles, um, you see and also in this case, uh we're going to play with two different colors like the brighter one and the darkest one I'm going to save the darker one for the part of the air. Like it's more farther, you know. So this way I'm creating some kind of volume and also I'm adding some kind of depth to this earth Style. Now, it's time to do the same with the short hair uh with short hair. I want movement. I want flow. I have to pay attention to the gravity and also the short air can be a tool to minimize the pose I'm going to start like creating this wibby uh short hair. Like Middle Air. You know midi air, I don't know if this is the name of the air, the air style, but pay attention to how I play with volumes. You see, I have one part that is like more flowy that has a lot of volume and has a lot of movement, and then I have other part that it's not that much it's more straight, but also, I add some kind of volume at the end, and This is helping me to make my character with more movement. If you see I am following this side or the the side of the character, you know where he's looking um to add. You know the direction to to pay attention to that direction. Uh in case I really want to make like a short straight air um. You see um, it's not the same. We can do it, but it's interesting that you add some kind of movement there, because otherwise you're portrait, it's not looking the same. If you see it is less Dynamic than the other one that I did with more volume, and now I'm painting super fast, because I don't want to bore you guys uh this kind of air. Again, I am using the um Shale brush from procreate for the edges and to create, like this kind of wibby things um. I would suggest to use like a pen pressure brush to make like the details and to make like the loose strands that they are coming out from them from the air style itself, and also, I recommend you do that, because you're giving more movement to their art Style, if you can see and you're making it more realistic and now it's time to do the same uh in a front face uh as again from faces are super complicated because everything that you place in there it's super boring and super uh vertical. So you have to break these things so as the same as we did with the long straight air, I'm going to create here um some things that break these um symmetry that I have in this case. I am sketching the air and I'm adding one part of the air that it's covering a small part of the face so like it's like the air is moving with the wing. Also, I like to add some kind of volume where the airline is um. So this way my air has more volume and my character has more depth. So as a recap, as I said before, I really like to play with symmetry in from faces characters. Also, I like to add things that break that symmetry, for example, adding this kind of air coming in front of the face, and I really like to add move like making the the air moving for the wind or by the rain or wherever. If you prefer to add, or to make like a more straight um like a more straight art style, you can Implement these things there. Also it's not going to look like the other one, but you can add small things to make it more interesting. For example, adding the volume on the airline thing you see what I'm doing, also playing with the distance making like the back part of the air more shorter and the front part of the air like longer. And I really like to play with the angle and the shape of the edges of the straight air, because if you do them super straight you're going to be very boring in your head style. So probably, if you add a little curve and like the open or open the Earth style, it's going to look more interesting. So here I'm painting again the air is not super fast, so you can see how I add more volume and make it more interesting. Adding some loose strands here and there and trying to recreate the movement, and in that case I erased it down part to make it more in the same size for the profile side. Hairstyles, you see I'm adding some volume on the top where the air starts and then I'm playing again with the volume of the Earth style. This is the more wibby one and, as you can see, I'm adding like a lot of volume of movement in the same direction where the character is looking, you know, and then I'm leaving the back part of the or the behind part of the head. I'M sorry! If I'm saying it wrong, um, I'm I'm adding some volume, but I not that much so I really wanted the direction of the air. It'S following like the side of the character and again for a more straight shorter. You see I am playing with the curve at the ending of my Earth Style and I'm adding there some movement. So this way uh, I'm not making super straight lines that this is something that I really want to avoid uh in in all the cases. So this is a very quick painting of the air, so you can see also I'm playing here with the difference of colors. I'M going to have one part more brighter and then I'm going to have one part more dark, because this way as I did before, I am doing shadows and adding you know depth to it, and here is example for the other Edge style. That is more wibby and has more movement. You see, I am adding like a lot of loose Earth fronts going out of the air like in the same direction of the side and give more movement to my ear Style. Foreign, I wanted to show you guys is how to draw collected air like buns and ponytails um. In my case, I really like to add a lot of volume like on the top of the head, always leave a space between the scalp and the air, and this is applicable to all the other examples. We saw it's important that you draw all the lines to know how the Earth style is working, for example, if they are attached on the top of the head, you have to draw the lines of the head going from the face to where it's attached so again Practice the shapes practice, the chords. This is going to be very important to make your air super flowy and try to play again with the with it. So you can add some part of the air coming through the shoulder or they're going uh backwards and remember to add some of the edge runs in this case. I'M going to play also with the color, because I have some areas that is going to be in Shadow and others are going to be brighter. In this case, I have the shadow of the neck impacting to the ponytail in that area. Also, the shadow of the face in the shoulder area, and now it's time to do the same, but with some bands, because buns are also super complicated to do and and make them look well. For example, I can start with the same like doing the ponytail, but then I have to start adding the balls that they are going to be the Buns I really like to play with the volume of the buns and make it them bigger or smaller or different. So I really like to play with the shapes and pay attention that, when you're doing in three quarters view uh you're going to have one band, that is super big and the other one that is going to be height um with the air. So with the volume of the air so pay attention to that remember to create like two different um planes or boards, one more Shiner and older, more darkened to play with the volume and with the Shadows. And here you see that I just made one of them. Even bigger, because I really love guys and making super big buns uh, this is like a the quick painting. As I said, we are going to see the coloring in the next tutorial and again uh with bands. I really like to add things that can add movement, for example, this kind of strands going through the face, also strands leaving the bands. I really don't like perfect buns, I like the Messier ones, and here you have to pay attention to that. You know play with the shapes uh play with the volumes play with them uh. It'S super easy to play with volumes with this kind of um of Airsoft, because it's super soft and super brown, and you can add a lot of details that they're going to help. You um boost your ear style in the front face example. I want to keep playing with the Symmetry, but it's true that sometimes we do have to change the point of view or change a little bit there hairstyle, because otherwise it's going to look super boring. You know so in this case, instead of making like the ponytail going through on the back of it, I decided to make it it one side and then play with the shapes and play with the volumes and the Earth strands coming out from it. You know making this ponytail imperfect and I play with the Symmetry. You can do that you can change it, but I always prefer to make emphasis to where the character is looking. I already said that, so that's why I placed the ponytail in the side where the character is look into, because I think I don't know. I think that it's making more sense in the story of my character and my portrait than if I put it in the other side um. I think this way I'm gaining more movement and I'm making people look to where the character is and and yeah. So now it's time to add more Earth's friends, I already made ones, but I'm going to make more uh, because I really want to have a more natural look and a more even it's not looking realistic. I really want people to understand what's happening uh in this case, I don't have any windy things or something, but it's the same. You know it's the same, ponytail that it's making the movement now it's time for. Do this doing the same with the buns. In this case, I'm going to play a lot with the Symmetry I'm going to place the bands more or less in the same side, and I want them to be like very symmetric everything. The only thing right now here, where it's breaking the Symmetry, is the side of the character like where she's looking and also I'm trying to make the Buns different from themselves even their places. In the same side, I make them different. You know I put strands over here and there and I make the shape of them different, because I don't want to make them look the same um, because otherwise, in real life, you are not having the same bun everything you know, uh, you are making it more Natural and you're making it looking more realistic in the cartoony style. So again I just place it one of the strands over the shoulder, the other one is behind. So I'm playing here with the volume, the shapes, and I think this is me a way to make this boring character and shapes more interesting and you know more richer and the last one is the site profile. Example again, I'm going to follow like very similar to the straight ear. You can see how I'm placing here the lines of the movement of the air, so they are going through the top of the head because they are going to be attached there for the ponytail. In this case, I am playing with the volumes and the shapes of the ponytail, making it through the um. The shoulder. You know it's interacting with the character it's placing there. It'S following the gravity. Um, you see, I am using uh Lucy loose lines to make movement at the lower part of the air. So, basically guys if you are seeing all the processes and all the examples uh it's it's trying to find a way to put movement and to create something realistic, just with shapes and lines um. For me, I think it's working. I really love how the movement of my ear size look like. They are not looking that stiff and this is very important because stiff uh, you know, uh stiff air styles - are super boring. I already said that, but you have to pay attention to that. Um use the color. In this case, I am using only a shadow to create volumes again, and this is like the first part you're going to see uh more in detail, and you are going to be able to do more in the next part of the tutorial and again for the Buns, I start the same as the ponytail and again uh here. In that case, we are going to see like a very, very big one and then we're going to see a small part of the other band. You know the one that is more father and again I'm trying to play with the shapes of the loose strands making them. You know interacting with the body and the characters. I think this is super important. Take this in mind. Uh try to do that. Try to play with different, you know shapes I'll, try to cover part of the hairstyle, try to add volume when you are doing like collected type of Earth Styles - and you know guys um pay attention to the sketch. As I always say, sketch is the most important part of your drawing. So take your time. Um study the air style find references if you need it. Uh pay attention to the volumes, pay attention to the movement and the gravity, and I'm sure that, with these tips, you're going to have or you're going to start making um super more interesting hairstyles for your characters. And until here is the first part of this air tutorial in the next one, we are going to cover the painting process and also how to apply some FX and how to manage the layer. Because you know guys. Air is super complicated and I always use at least five layers or six for eight. You know for create all the things I want to create, so these things were going to be covered in the next video and, if you like, my content, please uh subscribe to my channel and if you like, this video in particular just give a thumbs up. So I will know that I have to continue uh in this direction and say that guys, thank you so much and see you in the next one bye bye. Thank you.
