Curly Makeovers In Movies

Growing up the “makeovers” in movies and tv shows impacted my opinion of how I looked more than I can fathom. The makeover always involved getting rid of curly hair, glasses and usually correcting skin flaws with makeup for perfect skin. is there a particular scene from a show or movie that sticks out to you? Maybe it’s impacted you to this day?

Society has trained us that wavy, curly and frizzy hair aren't beautiful ever notice. How we're always the before. Let'S take a look at some examples: it's a classic frizzy hair has her princess makeover and suddenly she has straight hair. Moving on to Julia Roberts and pretty woman, I always loved her loud Wild Hair. I thought it was sexy and beautiful. She starts off the movie as a prostitute with unruly hair, but to make herself fit in with Society. She gets a fresh blowout tea and smear Mallory from Sister Sister always had curly hair on the show they expressed the pressure they felt to straighten their hair to become more palatable by a society, and then we have my Girl. Carrie Bradshaw starts off a series with wavy curly hair as a poor, struggling writer and concludes her story with straight hair. As a wealthy rich woman. Will our generation make a change?

Hope Wren: My favourite breaking of the mould of this trend was in how to lose a guy in 10 days. When Andy is pretending and not being herself, her hair is straight but as she starts to open up more her hair gets curlier and more of her natural self ❤

Amanda Y: Don’t forget Phoebe from Friends. Her curls were so pretty :(

Amanda: That scene in the princess diaries always made me feel so bad!!! I even attribute it to one of the main reasons why I wanted to straighten my hair in my youth.

Tricia Grace: I love that you showed this! One day last week, I was having a bad hair day, and someone asked me if I’ve ever considered getting a Brazilian blowout⁉️

Oli Keeping The Faith: Yes! And let’s accept all curly, wavy, and straight hair types equally! Not just the straightest or curliest but also everything in between ❤

Dora Ramirez: I recently updated my professional work headshot and I said the heck with it and wore my hair curly! All other times I straightened my hair because I thought it was more professional, but honestly- that wasn’t me. It was very liberating to say the least!

luckyDancer100: Carrie’s hair kind of fluctuated throughout the series. It definitely was curly in the final season of the original show. But the reboot is a different story… looks like they’re blowing it out and going in with a curling wand to add some texture.

Emily R.: I've noticed this too and it's definitely partially shaped how I feel about my hair. Up until recently, I've felt that my natural wavy/frizzy hair was unprofessional. I've just started wearing it natural to my workplace after many years of trying to hide it.

Krystie Solfyre: You’ve definitely helped me love my curly hair. I absolutely love my hair but notice how sometimes I get acceptance from straight hair though in my opinion the curly hair is way more fun and beautiful so I try to embrace it and thanks to you I do that more now :)

Amelia Bomgaars: I never thought about it like this. The fact that curly or wavy is always the before. Wow

Janet's Planet: I hope you guys make a change! When I was growing up in the 80s curly hair was everywhere, and if you didn’t have it then you better hurry up and get a perm!

Rea Alice: when i was first starting my curly journey, this was something that *really* stood out to me and bothered me.

RM: I recently rewatched season 1 of sister sister and oh my god those girls are SO so CUTE!!!!! Brittany Murphy is also in that season with beautiful curls!

A.Marie: Pam from the office had curly hair and at the end of the series it was always done with a curling iron

Green eyed gal: As someone stuck in the 80's, I still perm my hair. I love my wild, unruly locks. Super easy to style - wash, add product, go. I don't want to be sophisticated or "palatable" if I can't have my wild, sexy hair.

Chelsea T: I've always wanted curly hair! I think it's GORGEOUS!!!

n c: I get embarrassed now days. When I wear my hair freshly washed and with products in it, it's huge! People will ask if it's natural or if I did something to it lol. When I tell them this is how it looks on wash day they geek out. We are lucky to have our curls

Green eyed gal: I always wanted to have hair like the girl from "Different World" (the Cosby spin-off). Denise's (Lisa Bonet) friend had hair to die for. I still wish I could wear my hair that way but I don't think my texture will allow it.

Elizabeth Moore: I love that they didn’t make Elaine’s hair straight (except for a few episodes) in Seinfeld. Totally agree though. I’m a lawyer and I now proudly rock my curls to court! My professional photo is still straight though :/

GGfr: IKR! Like it’s really frustrating and only makes people feel bad about their own beautiful hair. And it made me a little sad watching Tia and tamera always having straight hair. I love curly hair and it’s sad that a lot of films didn’t express that beauty.

Sydney Rue: Whenever I watch princess diaries I’m always like her curls would look so pretty if they just styled them. Her hair doesn’t need to be straight to be a princess

de pictura: Well talking about princesses It's really incredible that in fact princesses and prices before 20th century were wearing their hair curly That in some countries it was forbidden to normal people to be curly it was a " royal thing"

Helene Jensen: Another example of this is Isabella from Encanto. She is the only child who has long, straight hair and is seen as the most beautiful and "the perfect golden child". Still love the movie, and we also got an protagonist with curly hair.

Shine: Oh yes! I am tired to be called Halloween for my wavy-frizzy hair

Hannah: Ugh this makes me hate my hair more. The only movie I know is Clueless that the girls “makeover” didn’t straighten her hair

Kate Kennedy: I always had sorta wavy hair but my hair won't hold actual curls. All my life I wished I had the Julia Roberts' big sexy hair.

Doe Ble: All hair types are hot as hell I have curly hair so it kinda annoying to hear girls at my school ask me if I brush my hair this morning because my hair is curly

Lindsey Violet: Uggggh! That Carrie Bradshaw hair….. LOOOOVE!Maybe I should blonde myself!!!!! ❤

ImaTChure: Julia Roberts has my dream hair!!! (Pretty Woman, My Friend's Wedding, etc...)

Makenna Marie: I think you and your hair are beautiful ❤️❤️

Nora Mero: I have pretty woman crazy hair, more waves than curls. It drives me nuts during humid temperatures it just gets bigger.

tam_tam: Even as a black woman I never even noticed. Glasses are also done this way. Like you can't be cute AND have glasses it's like NOT POSSIBLE

Liane T.: Yes, yes, yes. For generations.

Leona D: At least “Clueless” wasn’t like this

crystal E: Yeah society sees us curly girls as crazy and unruly.

Olivia Shilvock: Also, Hermione!

Ellie Karene: And now we have she-hulk!

tnapoleon84: good points!!

Bonnyblueflo: Way better than straight hair

Crystal Jackson: I mean almost but not quite…

Millie M: Nicole Kidman too

Jillian Smith: Yeah, nobody society or TV has ever Tried to convince me curly hair was not beautiful. Never! you've taken that belief on yourself! It's a lie curly hair is incredible. If it was it considered bad people wouldn't be doing the curly hair techniques on YouTube. Heatless curl techniques take off. They spread like wildfire. However society said curls are bad right? Why are there products that curl the hair? Why are natural curl techniques on social media so popular? Because that belief that you've taken on is within your own head. Don't project that to the world. Curly hair has never been seen as a bad thing.
