I love a lot of stuff, but one thing I Really Love Is curly hair. Welcome back to our YouTube channel today we're going to talk about the eight ways you can get your best curls hydration curly, wavy, kinky coily from wavy all the way to coily hair. It really needs hydration, honestly straight hair needs hydration too, but the more hydrated and properly hydrated your curls are the better your curls are going to be. Hydration is super, duper duper key because sometimes the frizz and the flyaways and like the lack of consistency and curl, can be from heat damage. It can also be from lack of hydration and that can look like using products that don't have enough gorgeous ingredients in it. To penetrate that hair cuticle and get there on the inside and kind of Plumping up the hair from the inside out with moisture, also silicone heavy products can kind of like live on the outside of the curl shaft. It can cause the moisture ingredients to not be able to penetrate that buildup that the silicone creates. So looking for silicone, free ingredients and formulas is really important and also, I would just say generally like I was saying earlier, like learning that frizz is not your enemy. Like right now, if I look really close, like I'm sure, I can see like a little bit of frizz but like that's. Okay, like frizz, is not your enemy, but if you really really really hate it, you can take some air dry cream or some like edge control of your choice and just like apply it to the frizz gently to kind of like calm it down, but also just Like not even your enemy like frizz is not your enemy, it's part of what makes your hair amazing foreign, how to achieve great day, 2 and day 3 in day. Four waves is super important. So if you learn how to do your hair curly on day, one and that's fabulous yay, but we don't have to necessarily want to be like washing and conditioning the hair like every single day, so learning how to refresh your curls waves Kings coils on day two And onward is really important. I do love our complete conditioning Mist. Not only is this a great detangler on your hair out of the shower, if your hair is prone to Tangled super long any length any texture, this is going to really be light and detangle and help to like moisturize the hair in a non-heavy way, but for Day two day, three day, four, this is an incredible, Reviving Mist for wavy kinky, coily, curly, hair. It'S so good! So on day, two day, three day, four just respray through your hair, re-scrunch reset you can either red diffuse or let it air dry. Oh my God! It'S so nice foreign, here's, another really important tip for getting your best. Curly hair is learning how to sleep with your hair appropriately. If your hair is Curly and you go to sleep with your hair just down like if I went to sleep with my hair like this, I would wake up. Looking like, I got electrocuted because your body is like 98.6 degrees like Nick Lachey and his gorgeous brother or whatever. So it's going to make your hair really really frizzy and humid and just like rubbed, because you know if you're up against a pillow and you're, then see how all this hair it gets like stuck on like the sheets in your shirt and it just like rubs Around and there's friction so it's actually like even hotter than 98 Degrees, it's more like a hundred. It just can be really hot and warm like around your neck and because of the way that our hair grows, with your ends being so much older if it gets stuck between your body, heat and the sheets, and it just gets rubbed around. That'S like four to eight hours of like 198, 99 100 degree, temperatures on your hair, that's a lot of heat on the hair, and it causes a lot of frizz, and it also can make your ends get really brittle and we can break. This is also true for straight-haired people, but especially true for curly haired people learning how to sleep with your hair to isolate it from your body heat, so that can look like doing a really loose top knot when you go to sleep with a silk scrunchie. So just Loosely pile your hair on top of your head, secure it with a scrunchie and a little top bun or you can do a Bonnet like a silk Bonnet and put that over your hair um to prevent it from rubbing all over your body heat. But even with the Bonnet I like to secure the hair and a top bun or a flat, wrap and then put the Bonnet on top of that, first is just putting like a bonnet over your hair down because it still can get kind of like rubby. Even though it's better than nothing into your routine is a major tip, any type of like wavy curly, kinky, coily hair, especially around changes of season, can kind of cause more frizz or cause the hair to kind of like not know, what's really going on, and even If you're, in a climate that like doesn't change as much if you're more in like a tropical climate or just a climate, that's consistently more hot, then your curls weighs Kings. Coils need more hydration just because it's like hot outside, so a really gorgeous repairing moisturizing mask is really important to have in your routine foreign thing. That brings out the best in your curly hair is learning how to accurately layer products. I remember when I first started doing queer eye the reason that I would style my hair straight and heat styled. So much is because I knew how to recreate it consistently. I didn't really understand how to create the same, consistent, curly hair look before and that's because in hindsight I wasn't using enough product on my hair when I was diffusing it really when you're styling your hair curly, you got to use multiple layers. So for me on wet hair out of the shower I'll go in with complete conditioning Mist for detangling. First then I'll wide tooth comb, then I'll layer, instant recovery, serum on top of that then I'll layer, air dry cream. On top of that, if you want to hear a squelch like when your hair is wet, you literally want to hear it like squelch. It sounds like, and that is the hair having enough product in it that when you put the heat of the diffuser and that blow dryer to it, it's not going to get frizzy. If you don't hear that squelch, it's gon na get frizzy, which that's okay, because frizz is a part of what makes curly hair gorgeous. So it's cool to embrace that. But if you don't put in a product on it, first, it's going to be like super duper. Frizzy and you'll probably have to go back with a curling iron to touch it up. So I think that the layering and the enough saturation of product into the hair to prevent frizz is really important. Yes, layering one major tip is, would be like like using Like A sulfate free shampoo curls do not like sulfates, especially ammonium lauryl sulfates. There is a lot of different types of sulfates. Some are better than others, but sulfate free is always the best way to go. Jb in here is also sulfate free. These curls are just really giving it to me today. Learning how to set your curls is also really important. So we talked earlier about how learning how to distribute product with layering and using enough product is really important, but learning different sets is also really important. So there's a lot of different finger, curls that you can do where, like you, can take the hair when it's wet and like wrap it around one finger and then you can kind of like squeeze the product in and then like set it down and then you'd. Like diffuse those curls which we've sewn before or you can like twist the hair around your fingers, we've shown that curl before there's also a million really cool sets that you can do with like handkerchiefs, for instance, and we should do a handkerchief set someday. Oh, my God, but you basically take a handkerchief, you cut it into strips and then you can take the strip you take chunks of your hair and you just like wrap like like. If my fingers of the strip, you can just like wrap your ends around it, and then you just like tie that up and then you tie it at the top of your head. So, there's that there's like sponge rollers, there's also like tons of heatless waves that are huge on Tick Tock. With those little crowns you put like like an instant recovery serum and like an air dry cream and your hair wet, then you can do like any sort of like heatless wave style like on those little Halo things or sponge curlers or like a little rag set. Like what I was just saying, so we love learning how to do heatless waves that emphasize your natural texture you'll see a lot of folks with like textured hair folks. Doing like rod sets, which is also really cool or even like sleeping in braids, is a way of like setting your hair really. What a set is is learning to like use. It'S typically done on wet hair, but you can also set dry hair. It'S just like setting your hair on a shape, so whether that's like on a curling iron or a flat iron or like a pin, curl or a finger wave or like whatever this set, is you're like setting a style into your hair. So learning how to enhance your natural texture with was setting it in different ways is also really integral to getting the most out of your curly hair. Don'T be afraid of your natural texture, whether you're someone who has like Textures in the threes or the fours and someone's taught you that you have to like relax your hair or you have to be like afraid of your natural texture, that your natural texture isn't pretty. That is not true. All textures of hair are beautiful, they're gorgeous they're, capable of doing so many things and your hair is beautiful. So I think that's the other thing I would just say your hair is gorgeous and that's how to get the most out of your gorgeous curly hair is to like tell it that it's gorgeous don't talk to your hair, don't be like my hair sucks, it's just! No, your hair is doing so much gorgeous stuff for you. It is so cool. It is such like a miracle that we're here and then we get to even play with our hair in the first place. So let's celebrate that and celebrate you. Thank you. So much for coming to my curly hair Ted Talk. I love you so much. Curly kinky, coily, hair people, family, siblings, brothers, sisters, everybody curly, waves, King's coils forever. I love you all! Bye, oh and don't forget to like And subscribe thanks for your support. Thank you.

Jonathan Van Ness: Where my curly hair at?! Check the description for more curly hair videos and products!

danYELL: JVN gets a for teaching/reminding us frizz isn't the enemy. And for being one of my favorite humans.

Alice Christina: The curly hair journey really is a marathon and not a sprint! I've been wearing my natural curls for around 2 years after straightening the poor things to death for over a decade, and I'm still learning the best products and ways to look after and nourish them. Thank you so much for tip number 3, I had no idea how much heat my hair was dealing with at bedtime xxx

missmissyface5: Thank you for this. I had so much trouble growing up with thick curly hair, got made fun of constantly because I didn't know how to care for it. It's so nice to hear all the love for curly hair. And this stuff helps people who have a different hair texture than their parents! ❤️

Anna Margarita Arguelles: Thank you for being an inspiration. I live in the Philippines and curly hair is not a norm here and even deemed as ugly. But watching your videos help me learn more and to accept the curls that I have ❤️❤️❤️

Rebecca McCauley: As someone transitioning from always straightening my hair to embracing my curls I appreciate this video

Bernadette McVicker: Your JVN products are exactly what I've wanted for my thick, wavy hair. Never like silicones and absolutely hated polyquats, but with JVN my hair feels so soft and looks so shiny, and my scalp is happy too. My waves have never looked so good and are actually becoming curlier. I just used the hair mask sample two days ago and actually achieved root curl! Thank you for creating these products and for this video. mwah!

Lindsay Haugen: Hello JVN! Question for a future video: What are your thoughts and recommendations for clarifying shampoos/treatments to get rid of build up so hair is more receptive to good, nutrient-dense products? Thank you for your never-ending advice and positivity!

Robin Revak: Guurl, this is the exact video I needed in my life right now! Having covid last year caused me to lose about half my hair and turned the hair I had left all crazy wavy/curly. Thought it was a fluke until I saw the new hair that was growing back was also growing back in full curl/wavy mode! Like my hair woke up one day and decided to live its best life . I had bone straight hair before so these new waves got me confused AF. Soooo glad I at least have a place to start now to make it less of a hot mess LOL

coco ohno: I started going natural 3 years ago now and boy is it a journey. But I love my hair texture and there's so much I can do with it. I loved tip #2, it's all about styling, an retwisting/braiding at night to keep the style!

flojowithattitude: An entire vid on hair porosity could be so interesting. It's so impactful and no one talks about it enough!

Shy Violets: Number 3! My grandmother was one of those who ‘had her hair done’ several times a month, but she maintained her do with a head scarf and silk pillow cases. She travelled/visited everywhere with her own pillow. Not for her neck. Not for hygiene. For her hair. ❤️❤️ I miss her

jmack naturalista: I admire your work ethic and engagement sooooo much JVN! Love the curly hair content! So inspirational! Love this and all content really!❤❤❤

Ellyn Seeholzer: I love the Queer Eye anecdote! I remember a few years ago seeing that beachy wave/flat iron curls were becoming a norm in tv exactly because it was easier to hide “changes” between shots than with stick straight hair that was less forgiving when something was out of place.

Sarah Elza: Thank you for all the gorgeous vibes I've been on my way/curly journey for 2years and I'm still learning!

Christina K: I adore how you turn something like frizz into something beautiful. I have natural waves and had one of the best hair days of my life this weekend. I said, "JVN would be so proud to see this!" I even took a selfie! You keep that gorgeous soul shining! ☀️

Planet Issa: Yahoo for us curly wurly people, love your tips,my hair is just like yours, same texture and style.I fought me hair for a long time, now I embrace it

Mariel Aylén: I’m so thankful You’ve helped me so much with my curls! With your tips I finally wear them freely ♥️ We need to send you before and afters

Jasmine Vasquez: I love my hair while being sick last year and thankfully my hair growing back !!!! And it’s so curly I love it and your content it’s just what I need! It’s perfection ! Ty!!!!!

margaro2615: Thanks for the the info! I have wavy hair but usually straighten it. I'll definitely try your tips so I can wear my hair naturally wavy

Jenny Terrell: This is a perfect line up of tips for curly hair. My mother taught me these (except for the sulfate tip, i had to learn that from my hairdresser bff) as a kiddo who had long curly hair and now I'm trying to break the straight iron habit of my own daughter while I teach her how to take care of her long curly hair. Especially the one about wearing a cap to bed, I find using my man's oldest and softest t-shirts and wrapping them tightly around my hair while I sleep works so well, I do this on wash days.

J Garcia: Your curly hair videos have helped me so much. My son is the only one in our family with curly hair! I know you said frizz is not the enemy, but it was probably at least twice the size it should be. I love Air Dry Cream. He would probably let me come at him with a diffuser, but he'd rather I not. I put it in after his shower, and then it's beautiful for like 3 days.

Kathy Anderson: Thanks for the tips. As I get older (mid 40s now), my wavy hair is becoming more and more kinky and frizzy. While I love the kinky, it seems to have the texture and appearance of cotton candy lately. I keep having to re-learn how to fix my hair and it's frustrating. I'd love more hydration ideas since I do already use your products, but I don't know if I'm using enough, if I need something heavy duty, or if I'm missing a step. ‍♀️

Scarlet Bjornson: Gosh I wish I could have you do my hair even once. I would love all your tips and tricks for this super curly, dry course hair that's on my head.

Janel Hastings: May daughter has gorgeous, long curls which I covet! I'll be sending her the link to this gorgeous video! Thank you, JVN!!! xo

Elizabeth H: Great video, I am loving my natural curls for some time now. Maybe you could have added to take biotin or collagen supplement, also add amino acids and omega fatty acids to your diet. It's helped my hair stay soft.

BriBri804: My partner has been leaning into his curls and volume. We just went into a Sally’s salon and grabbed something. But this, I know will give us the extensive info we’ll need. Sharing this to him, now! Thanks, Jonathan!!!

Robin Krzemien: Thank you for this! I’ve been laying the JVN products wrong! I’m excited to try the next layering order tomorrow. ❤

Dominika Krizova: I used to hate my curls when I was younger and would flat iron every day. It has been a few years now that I try to care for them properly and I stil feel like a newbe. Your videos really help me love my curls more and more, thank you!

Ruth Lewis: Thank you for posting! My 13-year-old daughter has very wavy, textured hair and as I'm only familiar with my type of hair (straight, fine, thick), I've been at a total loss as to how to handle hers. Would you suggest finding a stylist who specializes in curly hair for her?

meghann sherman: Love that I'm using JVN products to refresh my day 3 curls while I watch this.

lrx001: as a person who is trying to grow out their fried damaged hair to get my waves/curls back I loved this video, great tips! No matter what I do to my mids and ends right now my hair won't curl well because it is so, so fried. But my roots do curl nicely so one day I'll get back to it. (btw I love how you include us, wavy folks! my hair is a 2B-3A depending on the weather)

Las Paginas de Amy: I love you Johnathan !!! I just placed an order from your line. I Super appreciate that it's affordable but the products are quality. I cannot wait to use the instant recovery serum . I have 3c, fine , low porosity hair that is very very thirsty and I've been having a hard time finding good products that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. So I also got your deep hydration kit. I was even happier when I saw the free Halloween kit was included. It's a cute gift. Anywho, I just wanted to voice my appreciation for you as a person and for your line

Alexa Kearney: I REALLY appreciate how you cater to discussing textured hair as well. I’m Jamaican and I never go to bed without a bonnet ❤️

Mel Robles: Hi Johnathan! I absolutely love you and ur products!! Just a quick question for you... I am a cosmetology student and in texture class we learned that calling really coily hair "kinky" could some times offend... I guess some can receive it as a bad connotation against their hair? What do you think?

Karell Williams: "Frizz is not your enemy" . True. I try to embrace my frizz and I actually love it, cause it gives me volume

Ina van der Leden: Literally love this video especially that sleeping tip that I do have a question, so I have more of a wave in my hair (it’s not like curly curly) and my hair is currently shoulder length! And I’m not so good with putting a ponytail( let alone do a knot) and it makes it even harder for me to do it now my hair is a bit shorter, so I sleep with my hair down most of the time because I don’t know how to do a knot without making it way too tight can you do a video of how to do a loose knot for when you are going asleep? Btw keep up with your content❤❤❤❤

Christy: My mane is naturally thiccck and wavy, but my hair is looong, and I've slept with it in a side braid for over a decade, so I feel like maybe it gets weighed down and more straightened overnight? Not sure. I'll find out after taking your advice and seeing what happens naturally when it's taken care of properly. :)

Kace O. DaMondaze: Thank you for this! I have wavy hair. Hate wash day. Love 2nd day refresh!

Naturally new to the game 😉: Love your content, new to your channel and to the natural hair community, your tips are on point

Amanda Meunier: Thank you Jonathan..I love your passion, experience and knowledge of hair ! Bravo ! You keep me engaged.

ScruffyLookingNerfherder: Slowly, SLOWLY learning to embrace the frizz! Some days the hair smooths down the way I want it to, some days she just needs to be a little wild

Anastasia McLeod: Thank God for JVN! Everyone's curls thank you for being here for them!

LIZZYONSTAGE: You are the BEST JVN!!!! I adore all of your products! Shoutout to air dry cream! HELP: I don’t diffuse my hair at all- I have lost most of my hair due to illness, so I don’t even have enough hair to diffuse… I let my bottoms air dry naturally. Tips for how to style COMPLETELY without a diffuser? Love you!!! ❤❤❤

Sierra Hunter Lewis: MOMMA just ADORES you HONEY !!! You're REALLY helping LOADS of people !! YOU GO BABY

Tommy Scarpitti: i wash my curly hair every other day to 3 days. my scalp gets flacky and itchy if i go long in between washes. i also don't refesh because of product build up. i also plan on going to gym to workout eventually and i feel like my hair routine is gonna change when i start working out because of sweating. i also don't like co washing.

HELEN LARA MURPHY: Please do a handkerchief set!! It would be so gorgeous.

Amy Bucher: I did not know the heat generated while sleeping was damaging to hair. Thank you!

J D: Ohhh can you do a braid setting video!? Would love to know how to do this without looking crazy!

Anna K. Albano Luzardo: the sound in tip 5 was SO accurate it makes me happy to know I do all of this it does take time to learn your curls, but so worth it

Evelynn Shanks: I am trying desperately to build a curly hair routine. Whenever I layer products, or do anything besides simply washing it, it comes out greasy and my curl pattern is messed up. JVN PLEASE HELP ME

Christine Renee: FINALLY!! Someone telling me how to layer products!!! Thank you!!

Lisa M: Do you have any advice on keeping curly hair clean if you are working in the hospital? As well as curl friendly up-do hairstyles? Thank you!

Heather Dunham: I just started using JVN product's on my natural curly hair you have changed my hair life!!!!! Thank you for amazing products!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

ckramer 207: Ooooo I needed these tips so badly! Thank you JVN!

twabification: Love the video!!! Is it true that you need sulfates to get rid of silicones? I was told that when transitioning to no silicones you need to wash one last time with a sulfate shampoo. Is that something you’d recommend?

Dalia Rodriguez: Not a curly hair but I watched AND shared with my curly hair sis (who I told to take the JVN quiz AND I bought her the recommended products so she could ❤️her curly head as much as I do!)

Daisy Liss Acevedo: Thank you, definitely I’ll try this. ❤

Ro Guerra: Professor van ness, you killed it! Again!! Love you!!!

Nivedhitha R: Wanna make curls last so bad Hopefully will be able to do with the tips from jvn ❤️

Ash M: This video is now my Bible Thank you Queen!!!! ❤️

Kelly: I'm interested in trying your hair products for my curly hair. Do you have any info on it being cruelty free and vegan? Thanks!

Jillian Adriana: Can you do a full video on layering the JVN products? Should I use them all together or do I not need to use Instant Recovery Serum and Air Dry cream if I’m using the Blowout cream? Or is that too much product?

GLADYS: I COULD BE HAVING THE MOST ROTTEN OF DAYS, AND YOU MY DEAR ARE MY LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE!...LOVE YOUR PRODUCTS!!

Lia Scott: I have tons of pictures of myself and I noticed I don’t have ONE picture of me with my natural curtly hair because I only felt beautiful if I straightened it . Thank you for this video!

Laurie Pacheco: My hair is hard to penetrate with hydrating products. Protein heavy products dry my hair out and make it look like straw. I never use heat and only use products without any of the "cones". My hair is curly and fine and want to just wet, scrunch and go. Do you have any products for this type of hair?

Maresa Mo: Oh dear lord and diaper wearing baby Jesus thanks for answering my prayers and giving me gorgeous curl caring advice! My hair right now feels like hay now that it's getting longer and I get super annoyed but would like to keep i growing to try out new hairstyles. Imma start taking notes

nekochan444: Jonathan such a lovely human, we love to have warm fuzzies for wavy, curly, coily hair! 2B girl here

Joseph Mercado: Oh my god I needed this man my hair is outta control lol thanks JVN

dussaphaur: As I curly girl that reacts badly to liquid shampoo I use solid products as much as I can I don’t pay attention to silicone en things it wil make it more complicated. Stil I love the tips

Makeup by monisha bathija: Please make a video using the Dyson Airwrap curling wands on curly hair, please also share the products you use to prep

Sara Flaherty: I have to try JVN because I do not love my curls. I live with my hair in a buns because they never ever look good. I have tried all the tips and tricks but it’s always the same disaster unless I apply a ton of product and then it just feels gross. I’ll trade with any straight hair person out there lol

Sandy U.: Love thisssss❤

Sheril rosna: Omy Jesus Christ is here to preach about hair care <3 My prayers are getting answered!

Briena Rivera: Gel gel, one day of JVN launches one just chef’s kiss (everything is already chef’s kiss anyways regardless )

Emily Clark: JVN is my religion! So I feel like a bad disciple BUT I use a shampoo with SLS in because I've found it best for my curly hair. Sulphate free can make it worse I've found personally. But I always remember the QE ep where they said about it being the same stuff as is in car engine cleaner I also wash my hair everyday as I get really hot and sweaty overnight so by the end of day 2 it's so greasy and itchy I avoid that. I think because it's curly and I use a lot of product it builds up too. I've got a silk pillow case though! Using a combo of instant recovery and air dry cream has brought out my best curls, air dry on it's own made my hair feel damaged despite giving good curls. Now it's soft and shiny AND actually curls despite me growing it out and adding weight/length thank you goddess!! Xxx

Deandra Johnson: God he just seems like the nicest person!!

Laura Nelli: Love ❤!

Leroy Lipschitz: I have straight hair but i still watched this because…JVN

Flavio Pons: Sorry, you lost me already at the "silicons are bad" myth.

Brittany Drake: Any nighttime scrunchie suggestions that aren’t silk for the animal lovers out there?

Elizabeth Jones: Love you dearly. I did not have a good go with your hair products. I have tried multiple ways of use. Do you have any suffestion?

Nicole Souza: You are the cutest
