Hello lovelies and welcome back to my channel for life after 40.. I am olivia if you are new, so this beautiful young lady that you are seeing her name is alice. Deering alice is 24 years old and i'm so proud to say that she is the first black female to qualify for the olympics and represent britain, so alice at 24 has qualified to represent britain in the swimming category. Guys and as you can see, alice has afro hair, she has type 4 hair and, as a natural hair vlogger, i just needed to step in and speak up against the disgusting announcement that has just surfaced in the media, so alice um, as i mentioned before. Obviously, swims and if anybody that's been swimming before or has ever tried to learn how to swim, that has afro hair. You know that those conventional swimming caps that you get in the stores they do not suit our type of hair. We have thick coily hair and it's really hard to get those tight rubber. You know just one size caps over your beautiful lots if you've ever tried to swim with one of those. You know it's completely useless for our hair. Now, according to the um, according to the um swim england, or which is an organization here in england, they say their data says that only two percent, only two percent lovelies of regular swimmers are black okay. So there is really we don't have the representation within the black community at people swimming at this kind of level. At all, you hardly see it so alice decided to do the sensible thing, and i don't know if anybody knows about this swimming cat, but there's been a swimming cap. That'S been out for a while. Now it's called the soul cap. It'S specifically designed for women who have type 4 hair and alice, decided that she wanted to swim with this cap during the olympics, and they have basically decided that this is not allowed. It'S been banned is the word. They use completely banned um according to the international swimming federation. They they issued a statement which said that the cap does not fit the. You know the natural form of the head one and then international events never used, or you know, required caps of such size and configuration for their swimmers. Now, here's where i take issue with this okay, this is the soul cap you can see. Alice is wearing the soul cap, okay, those regular size caps that you know the regular ones that you get in the store, i'm not even going to mention the brand, because i'm so irritated by this whole argument. Um they do not fit afro hair. Basically, they are not for us, okay, and because we are underrepresented in this category of um sport. I think it's really important that they do rethink this decision, because you know what it what you know. You know that chlorine isn't good for the hair. We know this is good for the hair. You need to be able to protect your hair and those caps do not do that for the average black woman who has any type of length of hair on her head now, if you have really, you know close shaven hair and your you know, you have afro Hair, but it's really close shaving to your head. Maybe you might just be able to get away with wearing one of those regular conventional hats, but once your hair starts to grow because our hair grows upwards and outwards it's thick, it's cold. It'S beautiful! We need something larger, something that can cover all of those locks, so this is the soul cap. This is what it looks like. We cannot wear this. This is only meant for one type of person who i am not even going to mention. I think you can see for yourselves. Do you remember that movie napoli ever after? Well here's an extract from the movie, for you hear the i could hold my word longer v, i'm warning you violet violet jones, violet jump. What the hell happened to your hair. You look like a chia pet. This is why we need caps like the soul cap, because they fully protect the fragility of our hair. Our hair already has to combat you know loads of factors, including dryness, and crawling just exacerbates that those conventional caps do not provide the kind of seal, that's necessary and required for our hair to be fully protected when we are swimming in chlorine waters. So i think they really do need to rethink this decision. It'S disgusting, i think it shouldn't be allowed and i think it does need to be debated and challenged. I'M going to tell you why they can get away with making statements like it doesn't fit the normal shape of the head. This gentleman that you're, looking at on your screen, his name, is amar. Singh amar singh is a sikh london underground transport worker. That'S the network that we have here in london for those of you who are unfamiliar with lul london, underground limited now, london underground limited, require their staff to wear a particular style of cap as part of their uniform. It'S a peak cap but because mr umar is a sikh and sikh is a religion and if you know anything about the sikh religion, the men grow their hair very long and they have to wear a turban to cover their beautiful long locks. So, mr umar, mr omar singh was permitted to alter his uniform and to wear a turban with the london underground badge on the front of it, because it was synonymous with his religion and because religion is a protected characteristic in anti-discriminatory law. They couldn't deny it. They had to grant him permission to actually be able to wear that as part of his uniform and be accepted as part of his uniform. Our hair is not a protected characteristic, and so therefore, that's why they can get away with saying things like what they said. You know when it comes to the international swimming federation um. I just think this whole thing is outrageous and i think the way that we can really really show that we mean business if you are learning how to swim. If you have children who are learning how to swim, if you are a regular swimmer yourself and you have type 4 natural hair, i urge you to go and purchase yourself. One of these soul caps take a picture of yourself wearing it, whilst you're swimming post it on your social media platforms. If you have one, if you don't post it on your friend's social media platforms, tag the company and let's give this company even more visibility than they have already. Let'S make noise and let the world know that these are the sorts of caps that we need to protect our hair. Let'S make a hashtag about this. If we can, if anybody has any good ideas of a particular hashtag, then please leave it in the comments section below, alongside your thoughts and opinions about this whole debacle um, i just think it's disgusting. As i said before, it's just it's just um, it's unacceptable. Anyway. That'S the end of this video guys, thank you for watching. Please give me a thumbs up subscribe. If you are new and i will hope to see you in the very next one bye

Deedee L: I have a soul cap. The other types do not cater for our hair. That is discrimination.

Tamu Spiller: My son is autistic and hasn’t had an hair cut since he’s been born. He loves the water and a regular swim won’t do the job

Wavy_ Godd: It’s outrageous that she can’t swim with the cap that fits her hair!

J Njoku: What in the world! This is so disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising.

Claudia Berko: It’s time we make our own Olympics.

blklocladybug: i think if they truly wanted this type of cap to be worn by men or women, then it should have gone through the proper channels and shown that it should be a part of the olympic head gear. You can't just say, I want to wear this or that at such a high arena. They have to make sure that it is not giving an unfair advantage to the athlete. We have to be reasonable...follow the proper steps to get this passed. personally, I think it would be a hinderance and make her slower. also, you cannot compare a store bought swim cap to the type that is used by them. totally different material. I just think we should look at this logically. And she is not the only black swimmer going to the Olympics. We are being represented WELL. I am a huge fan of the Olympics and what it stands for. I am not team usa, I am team everyone!

Von Bradley: This absolutely ludacris. It shows that a lot a people does not understand black hair.

Lisa Nwabia: #myhair #mychoice This is so sad honestly

Out Of Order: So sad.

choosenone20901: I think the brand needs to show that the dynamic of the regular swimming caps is the same as theirs and the Olympics should allow their brand of caps to be allowed. I don't get why this is an issue and why the Olympics didn't approve it.

Kugelblitz: If you want to swim slow af wear that cap. No professional swimmer is willing to swim with all that drag. It is more suited for recreational usage.

Na'Sasha _Just: Thanks for sharing

Dionicia Marchena: #myhair

omik redarhcs: This brings out the racists doesn't it. ???

Tennessee Minnissi: But wouldn’t it make her swim slower? Isn’t the objective of competing in the Olympics to win?

Marcia Jacqueline Myrie: I sooooo agree with you; this is unfair and discriminatory. I have stayed away from the pool for years because of this very problem; my 4 type hair is very fragile. Now, because of a back injury that I got last year, my doctor recommended that I go swimming. My first thought was: what am I going to do about my hair? As you said, the conventional swimming caps are pretty useless in giving any kind of protection for our type of hair, so I will definitely go and purchase the swimming cap you mentioned and I’ll post myself in it. A part from that, perhaps we could get a petition going, just because there are few black swimmers doesn’t mean that our rights for equality should be ignored. Thank you for informing us about what’s going on.

Richmond Boahene: She should just braid her hair. You guys complain too much

Lion of Judah: Total one thousand percent racism!!! This is what pure racism is.....I can change laws and rules to hinder you from competing in a sport or business.

EB Vision Network: Okay- this is not about the Sport - this is just an out right ban on Black people / it’s a form of saying you are not good enough/ so follow our rules or get out‼️We don’t respect you the same way we respect other cultures

SAPPHIRE DESCHANNEL: Just braid your hair then put cap on Nothing is going to change just for u Black swimmers just cornrow their hair and then put in the cap If that is the case everybody will have their own cap It is just swimming that’s all the tighter the cap the more speed u have Either u want to swim or u don’t want to swim Rules rules rules

Temitayo Atanda: The could quit swimming or follow the rules.

Karina Rodríguez: Have you think of filing a Lawsuit against the Olympics????.... This lawsuit is easy to win... obviously this is discrimination.

Anunnaki Menagerie: It stupid, but if she just shaved her head she'd probably shave off some time
