Today I styled my mom's wavy curly hair, and you will not believe this transformation. Her hair is naturally fully gray, so it is color treated. She also doesn't normally wear it natural, so she straightens her hair all the time. She uses heat tools and she doesn't really do much for her, naturally curly hair. So, let's see if we can bring back her natural texture in just one wash day and if you are new to my channel welcome, my name is Gina, and here I make videos all about naturally curly hair. I love doing really simplified tutorials talking about the science of hair and helping you problem solve with your curls, so that everyone can achieve healthier hair. So let's go ahead and get started with my mom's hair. So here's what we're working with my mom currently doesn't have any styling products in her hair and she did not style it when she last washes. So this is it completely natural, as you can see, she does have a little bit of highlights in her hair. So I'm first going to be using the curlsmith bond curl rehab style. So this is a protein treatment and a bond repair treatment. So this is going to help recover damage which she definitely needs. So while I'm applying the bond curl, I'm going to ask my mom some questions that you all submitted for her over on Instagram and I'm also going to ask her what it was like being a hairdresser back in the 80s and the 90s. She actually used to cut hair. She used to always cut my hair, which is really nice. So I'm going to ask her what types of treatments and things that she did on clients back in the day. She doesn't cut hair anymore, she's now a teacher. So you typically wear your hair straight. Do you find that easier than styling it curly since I have to be at work so early? I just put I started using that curl stuff that you gave me the light cream, it's in a white and purple bottle. I don't remember what all I gave you. It is a light cream, so I put that around and just scrunch it and then sometimes I'll, just curl, my bangs on your back or something to get them out. You curl with the curling irons yeah. So you haven't really worn it like styled curly curly for since then, since you did it last since I did it last, but some of the products weigh it down like if I use a heavy cream, I feel like with wavy hair mousse is a pretty good Option too, I'm gon na try a cream and a gel. Today, like a lightful gel my mother, used to use Dippity Doo. I know I remember you telling me that I like the gel and she would set it on hot, on curlers with curlers yeah. I can't imagine using a gel and then putting heat on a top of a gel. How do you maintain your color in between colorings with the red because red Fades since yeah try not to wash it much? The best thing I have found for color treated hair, which I don't have it anymore, but is using a sulfate free shampoo, but sulfate is what strips out color. So if you have color treated hair, you would want to use a sulfate free shampoo, so most curly shampoos are sulfate free, so they probably didn't have Bond treatment Sac. When you were doing hair yeah, they had some ionic bond treatments, but we would use cholesterol, cholesterol. I just made the hair super soft, so it's more like a thick, almost a mayonnaise cream, a mayonnaise here it is this - is now I use on your hair one time, the olive cholesterol, deep conditioning cream, so we're going to let this sit for probably five to Ten minutes it's already been on the hair, as I was putting it on, so I'm able to just let it sit for about five minutes, since it's already been on there for maybe 10 or so, and then shampoo this hair afterwards. So I'm gon na go use. This clarifying shampoo on her this is the Malibu sea undugu ph9. This is a clarifying and accumulating shampoo. So this is great to remove hard water buildup from minerals product buildup. All of that - and I did check it - is color safe because it's sulfate free. So it's not going to strip out her color, but it is going to remove any buildup that she might have we're. Gon na go do this and then I will be back to deep condition so for the deep conditioner I'm using the curl Smith, Hydro cream soothing mask. This is one of my favorite deep conditioners, because it provides so much moisture but doesn't weigh down the hair. And I wasn't really sure exactly what her hair texture was. So I didn't want to use anything too heavy. I think it's about medium texture, it definitely doesn't feel fine and it doesn't feel as coarse as some of the coarse areas that I have, but it is very thick. She has a lot of hair and that was definitely a learning experience. For me, it was just how to work with so much hair. I definitely needed to section this off. I should have sectioned it off. It would have been so much easier to work with, but it was extremely tangly after shampooing and it was actually tangly before as well. You saw me trying to get through the tingles with the bond curl. It was very difficult. She said it is normally this tangly and we also shampooed upside down, which I don't usually recommend doing, because that can just make Tangles worse and it definitely did, but I'm using my tangle teaser ultimate detangler brush to work through some of these knots. I was surprised even with the deep conditioner in it still wasn't, really getting the tingles out very good, so I had to just work in small sections. She told me that I was not pulling in to just get through them. So it's funny because I normally recommend detangling with your hands only to not cause any breakage to not rip through your hair with a brush, but the way that her hair felt with the texture. There is no way that I would have been able to get through that without using a brush and just using my hands like the knots were just so small that it wouldn't have worked. If you have like build up - or maybe it's the color yeah like, I can feel it when I'm combing it it's not as like slippery, and maybe that's the color, because we just did the clarifying shampoo yeah, but I might have needed to do a couple of Shampoos, sometimes if it's really bad, I got ta, do multiple, but and believe it or not my hair, Tangles, worse without color. Now, because the color has a protective coating, which was actually one of the other questions that we got. Somebody asked if color makes your hair straighter and I think it it leaves like a coating. Now, I'm not a hairdresser, I don't know how it works, but I feel like it leaves like a coating on the hair, at least when I had my hair color treated. I felt like it was straighter and it had like a film on it all the time. Okay, so we rinsed out the deep conditioner without going upside down this time and it was much better. So it's a lot less tingly, but it still has some Tangles but we're going to detangle when I get the curl cream in so I'm going in with the AG curl fresh definer. This is a curly hair of styling cream, it's more lightweight than the recoil cream. That you guys have seen me use before this. One is just a little bit thinner in consistency, so I thought with her wavy hair. That would be a better option and I wanted to try this combo again. I actually used it on myself recently where I used the curl fresh definer and then the liquid effects, and it was pretty good, but I still think I prefer The Recoil, but for her hair. I think this was a good choice because it wasn't too heavy and it gave her some good moisture and it gave me some slip, so I could actually work through her hair. Then I used the AG liquid effects extra firm, Styling Lotion, so this is a gel that is not going to give you a super crunchy cast, but it does give stronghold. If that makes any sense she mentioned, she didn't want. You know hard curls or she didn't want anything too sticky. She didn't want to really feel the gel in her hair, and I knew with her hair being so tangly and stuff that liquid effects was a good option because it does have so much slip to it. It'S a very liquidy moisturizing gel and you can definitely customize the hold. If you use more, you can get a stronger hold or you can use less. So I definitely went on the lighter side, and I know that you can obviously scrunch out the crunch to make it softer. So so I thought this thinner formula would be a good option and it's definitely one of my favorites. By the way, the AG products that I'm using are the older packaging. They have since updated this I'm going to link everything down below, but just wanted to. Let you know if you check it out on the site and it looks a little bit different, so I am using a brush to style because, like I said her, texture is just really hard to work through it with your hands and really get that smoothing effect. Fortunately, the tangle teaser brush is not super damaging, so you can use it any hair type. However, you do want to be very gentle if you do have damage here with any type of brush styling. Obviously, using your hands would be safer, but it was so much easier to get through and actually smooth out some of the tangles and frizz with using a brush. Someone asked how has her styling routine change in different parts of her life efficiency, quick yeah, my main tips when I was in like high school in my 20s, I would spend an hour on my hair every day every day and I would wear curly. My hair had more curl than you curled it with a curling iron or you styled it, because let it dry curl, okay and it would hold the Curl we're gon na need to insert some photos. And then, in my 30s, when I had kids, it was a little thinner and the curl dropped to like a bigger wave pattern. Then I started coloring it in my 40s with home dye and it was terribly dry on my hair yeah. I was more of a strawberry blonde when I was younger and red is one of the hardest colors to maintain. So I have to go once a month because I don't like my roots, showing sometimes I get a few highlights pulling the front, so you don't notice them in the bag and that's how to be expensive to maintain too. It is, but it's fairly thick still it. It'S gotten thicker, even with menopause, because I take um my vitamins from biotin. It is thick, so I'm surprised I have as much hair as I do. Yeah and a lot of people tell me that at menopause is when they notice their hair thinning and I feel like yours is thicker, so I don't know it must be genetics, but I didn't get that Gene yeah. So one of the other questions was: what haircut do you get what shape and I don't know how to explain haircuts, but you probably do long layers with a u-shape at the bottom yeah longer layers at the end, so they don't thin out if people layer, your Hair too too short too thin in the back. It'Ll look stringy, that's my problem. So the front pieces are not curling as good, because these are the ones that you're often curling, with the curling iron and pulling behind your ears. So they're getting more straightened out. You do have some curl going on right. There Style with the brush, you put the brush right there, and then you even wrap it around the handle and pull it down and see how it's kind of like a curling iron and see how it kind of makes it curl. And this is also the highlighted Parts yeah, so it's probably just really damaged, but I can't stand it in my face because I lean down like I know. I'M the same way, I can't go around teaching like this and leaning down over a desk and helping them, and this hair is flopping down yeah. So we'll blow your head back, it's drying so fast it does dry fast. One of the other things I was going to ask you is what you used to do with my hair. When I was little because I don't remember you, okay styling, when Gina was little, I would use this Johnson's. You know they make baby shampoo, but they had a Johnson's detangler like a diluted, leave-in conditioner, and I would spray her hair with that and kind of wrap it around my fingers. My hair was really thick and curly yeah. I don't think I really knew what to do with it. Then. Once I was in like Elementary School, you, I remember you brushing it out with a leave-in spray like dry dry. I wasn't even brushing it out like in the car on the way home Gina went through the stage where her sister went through the stage of wanting her hair slicked down yeah tied back. So Gina wanted to do that, but Gina's Hair was curlier. It wouldn't really smooth yeah, like I remember trying to get it. She would bash it really flat against her head yeah and try to pull it back tight and then that basically caused permanent breakage. For me, she um Gina's, learned to like her curls and embrace them their grandmother, loved curly hair. Both grandparents had curly hair. I was going to ask you: did she have curls because I always saw like a harmed or you know well, Mom did as a young girl. She had wavy dark, wavy, hair, beautiful hair, but I don't think it was ever curly. You get your curly hair on your dad's side. They had a thicker like a Corsair, really educated yourself. I love stuff. You post, you just have so many research you've done a lot of research like in hair school. Did they teach you back? Then they did like six weeks of it. I mean there was so much to be teached because we didn't only learn hair. We had to do nails, we had to do makeup yeah. I usually take my hair and I just squeeze it like that yeah. But it's that's causing frizz, you see when you do that, because your hands are dry and then you're going in I've already defined it with the brush and see that that's what I do. Yeah wet hands even product, like I could add, a little bit more gel, and so now I have like this slimy consistency to my hand, I'm just guilty of washing my hair, I'm wrapping it in a terry cloth. Towel yeah did I get your hair. You gave me a hair tile, I use it and I need to be using that. I was sleeping with my silk cap for a while good, but I have a CPAP, so it just became too much on my head. I think the Bonnet would actually help with the CPAP strap, so a bonnet keeps it plopped up on top of your head. So then the strap could go around behind. It'S still going to go over the Bonnet, but at least it has that silk in between. I don't know if you've tried that so it's finally time to diffuse I'm using my favorite curlsmith hair dryer, because it's so large, so it fits almost all the hair in it at once on one side, I'm doing it upside down at first. Just so, I can cut her hair more easily. This is really going to help encourage those waves to form and it's going to set them in place. It'S also going to help prevent the frizz, because, if you diffuse you're setting that gel pass right away, I also like to take those diffuser prongs and really use those to lift the roots. If you put them right at the scalp and then lift and hold, you will get a lot more root volume, then, to finish off the hair once it's completely dry, I'm going in with the curlsmith bonding oil, which is an oil that has Bond repairing properties in It so it is going to help strengthen it, damaged, hair, I'm just applying a couple of drops and smoothing this over the hair. This is going to help break up that gel cast, really soften it and add lots of nice shine. It also helps seal in moisture. So then, once we were looking at the front pieces, they were looking a little bit straighter than the rest, because these receive the most damage. Just like we were saying earlier. These don't curl up as much so one way you can try and fix that after you're done. Styling is, if you just wet it down a little bit, you can finger coil it or scrunch it or use a brush. If you need to and then just use those diffuser teeth to really lift the hair up and it's kind of like scrunching and it's going to set it right into place, this is going to help it curl up so much better and you can really see the Difference after we were done, they look a lot curlier, which is doing sort of this focused styling on these problem areas. I also wanted to just explain that this is a routine that you would do when your hair is in need of some damage, repair and needed. Some moisture: this is not something that you would do every single day. You would not do this every single wash day. I would probably do this on the weekend and then my hair would be set for the whole week, so I wouldn't have to do much freestyling. I wouldn't have to rewash for several days and then I would just do this again, maybe in two weeks after this or just a couple times a month when your hair needs some extra love the other days, you would just do a regular wash day routine, using A basic shampoo and conditioner and styling like usual, so in looking at the before and after it is crazy how much more texture that her hair has. I can definitely tell that the bond treatment made a difference. The deep conditioner I felt so much more moisturized. It was really fun, styling, a different texture, so if you haven't already seen it, I did a video styling, my sister's curly hair and her hair type is very similar to mine, but it's a little shorter and it's also a little bit thinner and she is experiencing Postpartum, hair loss so click the video right here on the screen. If you want to watch me style her curls and bring her curls back, and I will talk to you over there bye everyone

Gena Marie: What do you think of how it turned out? Can you believe my mama is in her 60s?! Also, AG currently has 20% off in case you're interested in any of the products I shared: https://bit.ly/3M2aRFG

Whitney Long: I love how encouraging your mom was about you! So sweet! This makes me want to style my moms hair lol

Deemzz: OMG I was just complaining that I cannot find any guidance for gray *color treated* hair. I'm in my 30s and I started going gray when I was 13 (I had my first gray hair before my first period), so I have been coloring my hair most of life and I just can't imagine just transitioning to my natural gray at this age. I watched while sitting with my Olaplex treatment in my hair, and I happen to have the curlsmith hydrocreme mask on hand, so I'm already on route to this routine!

Tamara Pace: The final look was amazing! Such a transformation on such a beautiful woman. Please update us all on if this experience inspired you to style curly more often.

Christine Mangan: Oh my! The curls look so good on your Mom!!

CindyBrook: Your mom's hair looked beautiful, Gena, you did an excellent job. I have a lot of coarse grays, and started using flaxseed oil to precondition before shampooing, and it has helped tame the wires. I also use a teeny bit on my ends while drying. The CS soothing mask is my fave. Thank you!

Abby C: Your mom's hair is like mine, from natural color, to changing curl pattern when she got older, to age when she needed to dye, to getting thicker when older. We must be related.

A C: I loved this episode ❤ You’re Mom is so sweet It’s so nice that you know the ancestry of your curls ❤

Niecey: OMG I'm so excited for this! My hair is almost IDENTICAL to your mom's! Only difference is that I'm a darker red....although I'm thinking about going a couple shades lighter for Spring. My length and cut is identical, too. Same with my wave/curl. My hair usually looks like her "before" picture so I'm excited at the prospect for it to look like her "after" picture! Can't wait to try! Thank you so much! Your mom is pretty. Now we know where YOU get your beauty from. She does NOT look 60-something! I honestly thought she was my age (53) or younger! DOES rinsing out shampoo/conditioner upside down really make THAT much of a difference? I wash my hair 1-2 times per week. I do it while bending over my tub faucet. The reason I don't do it in the shower is because my shower head pressure is HORRIBLE. It honestly doesn't feel like I can get my hair rinsed out thoroughly. If it makes that much of a difference I'll look into just getting a better shower head with more water pressure. ‍♀️

Star 123: ❤❤ I am here for Gena to the Rescue! I can relate to your Momma. Currently only the top of my head has gone white but the back of my head still is mostly my growing out natural color. I bleach and tone my hair. I have about a 2C hair pattern, low-medium density, and fine texture. My hair doesn’t tangle but I have lots of breakage even though I do bonding treatments .

L Willies: Beautiful!! I think she looks more youthful with the curls!

Belinda Chappell: Your mum’s hair looks great, well done Gena ❤

Tricia Grace: You’re momma looks incredible! I’m in my 50’s so this video really helps me because I color treat my grays, and it’s hard to find videos showing how to care for color treated wavy grays!

Sonia Burgos: Wow, you did such a great job with your Mom's hair. The curlsmith hair products are amazing!

Melissa Peirson: You answered a question that I had been pondering. I didn’t know if I could use my clarifying shampoo after a the bonding treatment. Thank you for always giving us the best information and explaining the process. My hair is very similar to your mom’s and the tangles are unreal, I never wash or style upside down.

Sherry Johnson: Great video thank you Gena for sharing. I am almost past the first year of growing dark color with highlights off my hair and embracing my silver/gray natural look. My hair was just like your mom’s. Dry and damaged. It is slowly returning to a healthy curly/wavy hair with some work. Thank you for sharing the products You have used to restore her natural curl.

Becky Garrett: I feel your mom's pain about wearing cpap. I can wear a bonnet but the straps still smoosh down my hair and also keeps it from staying up in the top of the bonnet. I'm going to try a buff and see if it helps. Love her results!

Dee Silver: Gena, your mom is beautiful ❤❤❤ Loved this video ❤❤❤

Nikki2370: Her hair looks gorgeous

Tammy-Lee Greschuk: Beautiful, Gena! She looks great!

Victoria Vega: Great video. Really enjoyed you taking care of your moms hair. Your mom is very pretty and her hair texture is so nice, similar to my hair. Great job would love to see you style your sisters hair to see her curl type. Thank you.

ima jenn: LOVE seeing new stuff on different hair. I picked up some stuff here!

Andrea Awangku: Your Mum has the most glorious hair!!

Haylee Black: I can tell you’ve got a good mama ♥️

Everyyoueverymiau: Great video. Both of you look so cute in the photo at 10:24 such beautiful hair

Francesca M: I have to say, after you styled your mother’s hair, not only does it look thicker, but it even looks more youthful, and I don’t mean her face — she still looks lovely. I mean, even looking at the back of her head the curly hair looks so fresh and young. Does that make sense?

What Wendy Likes: Gorgeous results

Liv Delima: Your mom's hair turned out awesome. Well done. Did your mom consider maintaining the curly look?

Nikki2370: Ugh. Now I want to buy AG lol Omg Gena those little girl curls are always the best

Meh: Would you be able to make a styling curly hair at night video? Because of my schedule I have to do my hair at night and once I'm done diffusing my hair I feel like I'm doing everything right and I even leave a bit of a cast and put my hair in a bonnet. When I wake up tho my hair is completely messed up and my curls aren't even ringlets anymore

Jessica Beirne: Wow - looks great!

Sandra Garcia: Your mom is beautiful like you.

Miriam Garcia: Great video: thanks for sharing. Would you be able to tell us where you get your haircut and what kind of haircut you get. I have been getting Deva cuts but I find that that my ends look stringy and they don’t grow nicely. I was thinking of gradually having the ends for the different layers dusted until I can grow it out evenly. Any ideas, thanks so much.

Abby C: No More Tangles! That's what she was talking about! My mom used that also.

Amy Rutherford-Close: Beautiful❤

Lola Cole: Looks great. Will she still straighten? It's so damaging.

Melissa Andrews: Just goes to show every head is different. And, her hair looks longer in the after photo!

Anne Volk: Your mom and l have the same hair color..hers is thicker than mine..lucky! Wish you would come here and do my hair!! I have yet to figure the best products.

Lenny baez: Yea she have alot of hair God bless her

Lori Wolsey: WOW!! Love that!

Lenny baez: I'm going 2 treat my hair better 4now on since I been watching ur videos about curlsmith products thkz u young lady God bless u

Lenny baez: She's beautiful

Lisa Panger: Why is her length the same curly as it was straight? Shouldn’t it be a lot longer when it isn’t curled? Something is fishy.

KatherineJ: I have similar hair texture. I usually just beat style because I don’t want to deal with my curls. But sometimes I would like to have a natural hair day but my curl pattern is completely gone now it’s just frizz
