Hello, everyone welcome to my channel it's good to be back so today i wanted to talk about three things that i wish. I knew when i first started my natural hair journey that i feel would have really propelled me forward at much faster speed than what i ended up doing. These are just three takeaways from my journey that i eventually learned, but i wish i would have learned them sooner, so i thought i'd share them with you today. So the first thing is that products support routines and not the other way around. Products are like a co-captain, the technique and the regimen. Those are the captains, so i actually ended up going from someone who was very routine and technique-based to someone who actually became very product based and i became a product junkie, and i would never recommend that to anyone. If you knew you might not know this, but i only have four products in my whole routine and i try and buy one at a time most of the time for every product. That'S not deep conditioner because i usually finish a jar every week. So i can't really be doing that i'm not going to the shop every week to buy one. So that's the only thing i buy in bulk for everything else. I try to own one at a time to stop myself from becoming a product jump key, so i'll use something unless the result is really really really bad, which has happened to me before. If you follow me over on instagram, you would have seen the fiasco. I had at my mom's house, using her shampoo was terrible, but unless the product is really bad, i usually use something until it's done right and that helps me to be routine focused and technique focused and using the products for an end. So there are a lot of different things out there. Nowadays, when it comes to products there are mousses and gels and creams and pre-poos and co-washes and all this stuff, and sometimes when i watch videos or i get questions from people, i feel like we're very product based and then we're trying to build a routine around The product, when actually we need to be routine based and find some products to then support that routine. It'S not every product that we see that we need to incorporate into our routines, and i feel like that's where some of the idea of the fact that natural hair is super duper complicated comes from. I think we see all these different kind of products. We think that we need all of these things. Really it's very very simple and i think if we were to come back to basics and solve for the actual problems rather than the products themselves, then we wouldn't find ourselves in product junkie, ism or feeling like you know. We have to buy every new cool thing on the market, so i think i knew this when i first started my natural hair journey, because i was lucky enough to walk into the natural hair community when that was the prominent thought in the community anyway. So back then, it was full of and i'm talking, 2009. The natural hair community was full of ladies who had super long super healthy hair and their content was largely built around what they actually do to get to where they are today right. So it was more about technique how they wash their hair, how they moisturize. How often that is how the deep condition the techniques, how they detangle was a huge thing as well, and then they also had you know. Okay - and these are the products i used to do this and for a lot of people, they use the same products all the time. So there was just one video explaining this, and then people would just rebind me by the same stuff. So i started my natural hair journey when the community was like that - and it was a lot easier to understand, but i think, as time has gone on, it's definitely become more commercial like a lot of different things and it's definitely become more product based, maybe rather Than routine based, i'm not sure why? Maybe it's because people feel like they already know what to do, but then maybe they feel like they need the products for it, but i actually think it's the other way around. I think it's more likely that people are joining the community more for the short term. They want the results really quickly. They want their hair to look a certain way tomorrow. You know, or next week or next month and things like that, and so that's why they're coming in and so they're looking for. You know that quick fix product what's the best deep conditioner. What'S the best shampoo, what's the best hair pill, what's the best, you know growth oil, so the second thing i wish i knew is that mindset is key. Ah, i've talked about this before in my channel and i'm gon na keep talking about it because i feel like it's something that is not mentioned as much as it should be in the natural hair community. I think a lot of the problems that we come to in our hair journeys can be solved with a change about how we're thinking about our hair. So for me you might know this if you've watched some of my other videos, i was super into japanese culture. Korean culture - i even lived in japan for a few years as well, and i have visited korea for i spent at least i'd say about nine months in total in korea as well. So i have spent a lot of time in these countries and i really idolized a lot of the looks and obviously natural hair doesn't fall into. You know a standard of beauty in these countries, so i would go and i would try and manipulate my hair to look a certain way. I would want it to be as flat as possible. I would wear a lot of wigs because you know it brought me closer to that ideal. I would wear a lot of braids because those are flatter they're more acceptable. They were longer and they made me feel like. I was assimilating a little bit more, but they did so much damage to my hair, because, even though the things i do, a lot of things that i was doing would be considered protective styles. Because of the way i felt about my hair, i wasn't protecting it in any way. I wasn't taking care of it. I wasn't making sure my hair was okay. I was just throwing on these. You know extra things like wigs and making sure those looked great. You know they look slick, they look great people. Give me compliments, but underneath my actual hair that belonged to me, that was god-given was suffering and you know i don't think it's easy to come to love your hair either. I know it's something that people just say and it sounds very quick and easy, but it's not one thing for me that really helped was really working through the issues i had with my hair. Where did they come from, even though they were magnified when i got into korean and japanese culture that wasn't the root of my problems? The root of my problem started long before that in my childhood, so going through thinking about you know how they started and really acknowledging that a problem was there and then working my way through those problems was what really helped me to mend my relationship with my Hair, so if you don't know where to start and you've, never watched me before, you might not know, but i do have a resource for this. So i have a natural hair mindset. E-Journal and this e-channel is full of different journal prompts. So if you love journaling, like i do, you'll love this e-journal, but they're designed basically to help you unravel the issues that you might have with your hair. So who is this for if you're feeling really frustrated on your journey? If you feel, if you find yourself always thinking, oh, my hair is never going to be like hers or it's not doing what i want it just won't. It doesn't feel like. If you find yourself having these kind of thoughts, then this journal may really support you. So, within the journal we go into different areas about, for example, what people said about your hair and childhood. How you felt about your hair growing up. You know we go through writing affirmations for your hair as well, and all sorts of different things to monitor how you feel about your hair and really uncover these negative things, but then kind of break everything apart and then put it all back together again. In a way in which you can gain acceptance for your hair, so if you would like to try that journal, the link is in the bio below and then we'll move on. Let'S move on to number three so number three kind of ties into number number two, but i wish i had learned to stop trying to make my hair do things that i just didn't want to do. So what are the signs that your hair doesn't want to? Do something it tangles excessively, when you do it, it hurts. It might give you a headache when you do it, so i love the look of washing goes. My hair feels so nice to be so free with no, you know anything touching it. I love the shape that it forms because i get a lot of shrinkage, so my hair is tailbone length when stretched, but when it's in a wash and go it comes to about i'd, say about here and then the front comes to about here. So it's like the perfect fringe situation and round little afro circle and i love it i'll insert some photos as well. It looks so amazing, but the tangling that i get from that is unreal, so i usually do wash and go's. It was once every year when i lived in japan just in the summer i used to do them and because actually my hair would dry but being in england, now is just a no-go. So when i would then come to wash my hair, i would get so much breakage way more than i'm used to so my hair just prefers being stretched. It helps me to maintain it. It helps me feel, like you know, i'm on top of it as well, because i don't like the super long wash days. So i stopped trying to do things that maybe or i do at least rarely things that my hair doesn't like um. Another way to know that your hair doesn't like something would be like excessive things like dandruff or pain in the scalp, so i'm tend to head it. I don't know if you are, if you are, you know what i'm talking about like the spot headaches the feelings of like pain in one area like if you put a for too long. My hair does not like these things. My hair does not like to be in the same style for a very long time. It just causes tension unless the side is very, very loose, so acknowledging that has been great in my natural hair journey. Another thing that my hair personally doesn't like to do is to be is to be super slick back, so i know it's very cool to have like really slick hair with the gel and the baby hairs and all that stuff, and i used to do styles like That i insert some photos i used to try them. I used to think they were super cute, but my hair didn't like it. My hairline has finally grown out. You know, after all, these years of having like a huge like really bad hair line. I'Ll say a picture of that too, because i've avoided these kinds of things. My hair doesn't like gel. It gets crispy. It blocks the moisture to my hair, so i've completely stopped that now. If i want to slick down hairstyle, if i want a neat hairstyle, she's saying i'll, just put a scarf on my head, and that will be it, you know it doesn't have to go any further than that. So these are just some things i wish i knew in the beginning of my hair. Jenny. Do you resonate with any of them? Do you already do you already know these things did? Are they new to you? Is there anything in this video that maybe you hadn't thought of yet that you found interesting? Let me know in the comments below because, as i said before, i read all the comments and although it takes me a while, i do reply to all of them, but thank you so much for watching and i'll see you in the next video bye, guys.

Michaella Wilson: I find your content very refreshing. You totally give me 2009 natural hair community vibes. I came into the community around 2011, so I think I connect with your content on that level. I love my natural products and DIYs; they keep me from over buying products. I’m trying to get my hair to your length one day. I’m almost waist length, so my next goal is tailbone. Oh and tender-headed sistas unite!!!

Bee Lit: I love this❤️ My hair does not like store bought products they irritate my sensitive scalp and dry my hair. Most of my products are from natural hair stores that use herbs and oils on Etsy or products from Uhuru naturals. My hair has been thriving. I just tried a chebe and quasil shampoo bar and it was the best shampoo experience I have ever had because although it had lots of lather when I rinsed it my hair was super soft and manageable. I took your advice on not moisturizing every single day that was helpful but also this video. I use affirmations to stay out of programming that has been placed on black hair because in reality people love our natural hair. When we are confident with our hair we are attractive. Here are some affirmations I use. I love my hair and my hair loves me My hair is soft, my hair is strong, my hair is thick, my hair is long My hair is manageable My hair grows fast My hair is so beautiful I'm grateful for my hair Im grateful for how long my hair is

I.Naturalist: What is interesting … you take on topics that are often overlooked by many. It comes down to basics! We have grown take make things harder than it needs to be. Now ,arguably it is hard to filter through the myths especially if you don’t know better but many don’t want to reset to get to the truth and that’s the unfortunate part. Well done!

God's Standard of Beauty: You’re so pretty!!! Thanks for the tips the biggest thing for me was the mindset required to endure the journey. I was always so short sighted and that caused me to relax my hair twice . I think in the beginning the content was more routine focus because there were significantly less products available. It’s great that black women have more options now, high quality options, but at this point, it is saturated and going back to the basics can simplify things for us.

Cheryl S. Booker: I can definitely relate to assessing our mindset and feelings about our hair. Most of us over 50 have had a lot of negative experiences about our hair and have tried to change how it looks or cover it up in order to assimilate to societal standards. Please continue these discussions because our natural hair is unique, versatile, and beautiful.

Okairo -: I really loved this video i resonated with somethings and i liked hearing your point of view. I think what's interesting is that we are the opposite with wash and gos and braidouts. For me, I spent a very long time doing regular braid outs and keeping my hair stretched and my hair felt so tangled, and dry and matted, it also made me just..spend longer manipulating my hair because I don't like how my braid outs look when left on their own so i ended up putting my stretched hair into buns and re-braiding it semi-regularly. Once I finally figured out how to do wash-and-gos that I felt pretty with..it was a big difference, i noticed my hair hurt less (because it wasn't tangled) and i broke less hair ect, it felt softer and more moisturized etc. so this is why i think it's really important for people to learn what their own hair likes, and i i liked that you have that point of view in the video, you're not framing what works for you as what works for everyone. I did resonate with liking styles that are kind of harmful to our hair.. I have two wash and gos technique, and one of them gives me a lot more shrinkage, whch i really like i think it looks so cute it makes me feel like i have a pixie cut--but it definitely breaks my hair when i do it which is not normal for me. I like it so much and i've been doing it all summer although I know it's not as gentle as my usual wash-and-go technique Going to do some braids next week to give my hair a break. I also was (still am?) really drawn to korean and japanese styles . What I do now is look for ways incorporate their ...vibe/energy, if that makes sense (lol) for example, "I like that this hairstyle looks really elegant but youthful...what's a way to style my hair that will also look elegant and youthful?" I think one of the things that really draws me towards that fashion is how airy and free and light the clothes i see online look to me..as opposed to stuffy and uncomfortable and rigid, and so now my goal is to find a way to also create that feeling of a light and airy style but in my own way.

Priscilla Monek: I wish I found your video last year when I took out my second microloc set. My hair was much longer, but I just didn't know how to take care of it. I was frustrated. I even made a natural hair rant and thays when I installed my last set of locs lol but now I'm grateful to have found you and such an easier routine! Thank you!❤❤❤

Jennie Janine: I've big chopped again, my hair is growing pretty fast, as usual. I'm challenged to steer clear of braids wigs and weaves. I have lots of loop headbands, open headbands, and diamond, tortoise, turquoise-look, and other clips plus loads of dainty earrings. I love making my own products or some for friends. It's more intentional for me to reject adding any other hair. I'm up for the challenge though. It's made me seriously rethink beauty standards. Your talk on this video encapsulated my feelings on hair care perfectly. So unproblematic and transparent. You are free to continue to rock our worlds. You got it girl, you got it girl

Brittany Terrell: You touched on so many important topics! Keep doing what you do!

アンディ: Routines over products is such an important mentality to understand!!!

Yara Mel Style: I had to conform with the fact that I don’t need a leave in conditioners, hair creams, prepoo and detanglers. Feels good to apply but doesn’t nothing for my hair. Warm Water and grease is all I need. Shopping for hair products is now very boring

OOO: Loveeee your videos please don’t ever stop sharing

Fine Natural Hair ROCKS: Your video is GOLDEN! Such amazing advice. Thank you so much!!

Blushing Rose Diaries: Wash and goes are a no for me too. The fairy knots and tangles are a nightmare with those types of styles

Marny A: You are so beautiful and great vid! Are you able to do a vid about starting your own hair care business, like you have with your hair butters?

Sara L: Just came across your channel, I am going to binge watch and just subscribed. Love from Canada .

Natural Woman: Great content

Asiimwe Priscilla: How often do you trim your hair please

Andrew Hogg: ❤❤❤❤

Prohodaction: bro-Super,you uploaded grogeous editing~see you later.

Geraldine Flomo: First love from Minnesota
