If you have a self-inflicted bad curly haircut from following all the viral DIY Butterfly Haircut tutorials online, I’m going to explain why as I fix my own DIY Butterfly Haircut job. In this video, I am sharing WHY ponytail cuts don’t work for people with curly hair and explaining that my personal hair goal is not length, but shape. This is how I, a licensed stylist, am correcting the cut to suit my hair goals. I hope you find it helpful. Please give this video a thumbs up and subscribe for more content!

Two months ago I did a stupid, [ __ ] viral haircut - that I never really wanted. I just wanted to show you guys what it would look like on me, but truth be told. I have been cursing about this haircut since getting it. Can you see the issues with the haircut? This haircut leaves the bottom portion of your hair so heavy and by only layering a little bit off this top section. You almost collapse the shape of the haircut and finally we're gon na fix it. What'S good everybody, it is our lucky day you and me, because we are going to be fixing my DIY butterfly haircuts and we're going to talk about why ponytail haircuts aren't a good option for everybody, specifically if you are curly before we get into the controversy. Let me just clarify that I am a professional licensed hairstylist that likes to help you solve your hair problems with some solutions. So if you would like to see how I take my hair cut from this to this, then keep on watching and let's get to part of the reason why ponytail haircuts might not be the best option for curly. Hair is because, most of the time when you have curly hair, you have got multiple textures. That being said, there are many ways that you can cut curly hair, but it depends on the canvas if you do like to straighten your hair, and this isn't the haircut for you. But if not, this is for us so to build it out and up and rounded we're gon na be focusing most of the hair cut in the back. We'Re not going to need any ponytails for this. Just some clips your hair cutting scissors, because, if they're not for hair, they might not be sharp enough and they will split your ends on contact and it may be helpful to have a wide tooth. Comb or just your fingers are fine, as well as a hair. Cutting Cape, I just bought a new one. That'S white! This is more like a Barber's Cape, it's rubber at the top, so that hair doesn't fall through major disclaimer and apologies in advance. This pains me to say that a few of these sections of the video are blurry. We tried our best in post-production to clear it up, but I I was not in Focus note that I am doing this on hair. That is pretty much clean. I only styled with a bonding cream, so there's really not much in my hair right now. I am just very gently detangling with my hands. A big key in this haircut is that we're not going to be using a lot of tension. We actually want the curl to be able to Spring and show us where it lives, and by doing this I am helping to expand it. So I'll be right back once I'm done here. Alright, so now see how this is very much giving a bell. All of this hair from the bottom to even appear pretty much one leg. So what I want to do is not quite layer. The haircut layering tends to remove a lot of weight, but also thin out the ends, and I like how dense the bottom of my hair looks. I just want the curls to stack better in order to build out the shape we need to start at the base. The foundation, the basement, if you will so to correct the haircut, we're gon na split it down the back, because my guideline is is the front length. I don't want to go shorter than this, so I'm going to take some of the back and excuse me for turning. I need to see what I'm doing see now when I bring that to the back you can see. I took some of the length off from there I'm going to do the same thing on this side and then we're going to connect the back. I really want more of a straight line. I'Ve been digging that I just want it to look really nice and full, and straight back how far you move and cut the hair from where it naturally Falls is what determines the shape. The first section of the hair was cut straight down. Now we're going to start taking sections now. This is a head sheet for those who may find this helpful, perhaps other hair stylists to get that curl stacking action. I'M lifting this section about 45 degrees out from my head before cutting it and I'm doing the same thing to the subsequent sections up the head. Every time I take a new section of hair. I use a little bit of the previous section and I lift the hair a little bit higher until I reach the crown of my head, I'm taking into my counts that the hair in this section grows out of my head at a different angle. So I lift it up even more and you guessed it. I use my guide from the previous section to determine what length to cut it. I just do this for a couple more sections until I reach the top of the head, when I feel like there's an area. That'S too heavy. I like to pick up these diamond or triangle shaped sections and I'll Elevate, the hair about 90 degrees from where it falls and cut to layer it and that's the back. It'S time to connect the front side sections to the rest. I'M switching up the angle of my subsections. Instead of horizontal we're now working vertically, I'm directing these panels of hair towards the back to match it up with my guide and trim it up and that's going to help me maintain length at the front which again I am not trying to lose any more of. I'M just connecting the front to the back. If the front sections of your hair are super short, they might not reach to the back and that's okay. Oh this is gon na, be it ma'am, it's just gon na be it. You need to be really careful with the hair in your ear region because it tends to be a finer density of hair. You don't tend to have a lot of hair there, so you want to preserve some of that fullness. You want to preserve some of that weight at the bottom, so to do that to keep more weight. We don't want to elevate. We want to keep the section lower to the perimeter gorgina she's gon na be stunning. I'M cutting the hair into position that I wear it off to the side part, and you can see the side with less hair is a little heavier. So I need to add a little extra layer as a rule of thumb. If the hair is parted an inch off the center, I cut about an inch off of that lesser side. Once I think I'm done cutting, I think again and I keep checking the hair you'll, see me fluff it out shake my head turn it curve it bend. It in different directions, because I'm checking to see how that hair is laying all right after lots of cross checking checking again and again and again, I can confidently say that I am at a point that I'm happy so now. What'S left to do is to shampoo condition and I'll come right back for some very simple styling in the final results you can see. I'M excited to almost be done here. I'M styling super simply one problem. This is the curl foaming gel that I created with verb. It'S gon na give me light moisture because I don't need a ton of that, but it's going to help give the curls some shape some medium hold and lots of shine. So I look Divine well now that that's all been fixed taken care of renewed refreshed and bloomed. I feel like I can resume and Round of Applause for the craftsmanship you. Obviously, this haircut is not as easy to do as a ponytail haircut, but that's because I was truly customizing this. If you wanted to do something similar to it, but simpler check out my universe, haircut tutorial that video will show you how to get a similar result using much less steps and using ponytails, but remember if you do have multiple different textures in your hair. Those haircuts might not be the best for you and if you don't feel you have the confidence to execute a haircut like this, don't do it see a professional or at least watch this three or four more times, because I have faith that you can do it And this will save, I mean a curly haircut can run you easily 150 and I've seen some curl Specialists charge upwards of five hundred dollars, which, if you now feel confident enough to have a hacked at it then do. Let me know otherwise don't but wait before, but just before we go, we have to answer a question from last week's video Zoe shared a really long, heartful comments. Oh, I love that. Okay, I'm sorry. We were going to a question. Another Zoe asks when buying a pillowcase for my hair. Is there a big difference between silk and satin? Is one better than the other very good question? Satin is actually the weave, so silk is satin, but satin is not. Silk. Silk is a fabric. It'S actually made of silk worms, so it's not vegan. It is derived from insects. It is a naturally derived, not synthetic fabric. It is also hypoallergenic and truly luxury. I have both and I have found that there is there's a bit of a different feeling wise on the silk side, but satin. The more accessible kind is usually made out of polyester, which I mean it feels just as silky, but it is polyester, which is plastic. I find it's not as breathable, but it is way more affordable. So, if you feel like treating yourself, silk is the more luxurious option, but satin gets the job done just as well. I could believe to some of my favorite options in the description box below I'll. Also put links to products that I use in today's video to get these results some affordable scissors on Amazon, as well as my cutting cape and anything else. You will need if you are going to be DIY, cutting including more tutorials so check it out below, and I will see you in the next video. Thank you so much for watching. I love your peace. Okay, this setup might be a sleigh. I'Ve got a [, __ ] mirror there. I can actually see myself lights. Camera action. You can see me here. Looking back at it. Do you see the issue with this haircut? Oh, oh yums. I am low-key sweating and there's lots of hairs on my face. I feel like I just lost a couple pounds. There are several thousand hairs all over the floor, which I'm not excited to clean up. I'M itchy just thinking about it. Yes, yes for real, okay, I have to send a video to Amanda. Are you ready to Jingle near males it's Mouse, hello, where the [ __ ]? Did you just come from where, where who are, where did you, somebody say, skip [ __, ] piece of hair is the bane of my existence. Where, like? Where did you come from? Where do you go? Where did you come from? Well, I don't know I just

Christina: Mell, you’re amazing & I’m sure we all wish you could cut our hair! My Q is: What are your best tips for keeping the crown area voluminous?

Mallory P: I did my own haircut after watching your Butterfly Cut video, and it’s the best haircut I’ve ever had! I ended up cutting more hair after the initial butterfly cut to add more layers but my hair has never been so voluminous

Gwendolyn Dodge: Hey Mell, do you have any tips on how to reduce daily shedding? Despite detangling as best as I can in the shower, my back and shoulders always end up covered in so many fine, long, stray hairs that I could make a dang wig out of all the hairs I pick off during the day. This happens regardless of whether I'm wearing rough or silky fabric. Help me save my outfits and sanity, please.

Sara: Ahhhh just in time!!!! The left side of my head curls more than my right side so NOW the left side of my layers look about 1-2” shorter when dry . Also the unicorn cut I did way back when has left the ends of my hair scraggly and thin so I did have to cut quite a bit of the mullet length off. The only good part about all of this is since I have been transitioning for over a year and a half almost all of my previous damage is GONE. I’m bookmarking this tutorial for when it grows out a bit more… or maybe I should just go to a curl cut professional for once ❤️

Eiffel1331: Omg MELL! When your cut was done and I could see the shape before you styled your curls…WOW, so gorgeous! I got so excited for you because this shape is You’re so talented, helpful and entertaining. You have been educating and entertaining me so well the past few years. Thank you for sharing with all of us

Zoé Rosado: Thank you for this, Mell. Really, really, really, thank you. ❤️ Happy Texture Thursday! Also so relatable, the random curls that just appear in weird places right after you checked like three times

Nives Corazza: My hair stylist said she’s been fixing this on a lot of her clients who did the butterfly cut

buddy holly: You did a great job fixing your hair! I totally agree about the heaviness on the bottom. Ponytail cuts are the worst, they just go viral bc they look nice from the front.

Nicole Muletox: Would it be offensive to show this to a hairstylist? I’m nervous about someone messing up my hair but I don’t want to offend

Deanna: Happy Texture Thursday!! So excited to see how this turned out!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo

Samantha Despres: I love seeing your videos ❤️might try this or the curly bob haircut next time! Question, if my hair is still knotting in little tiny knots towards the end of my hair after a haircut, does that mean I didn’t cut off enough of my ends??

Jastine Washington: Hi Mell! I've been binge watching your videos for about a week now every since I saw your 10 underrated hair care tips video. and I am in love with the Eva NYC 10-in-1 products you suggested in a a different video. My hair has gone from frizzy and sad to bouncy healthy and fresh. I love your videos and you've helped me bring life back into my curls. I have a question though, I know you aren't supposed to shampoo everyday but you said you don't like co washes. So I don't know what to do during the week.

Daniela: I am going to have to watch this many times to follow along. I overthink everything and am worried I’ll somehow manage to mess up this easy tutorial lol. I did the butterfly haircut and have choppy layers now and only noticed when I straightened my hair. This video came just in time!

James F: Hi Mel, do you think brush styling is damaging on the hair? Seeing a lot about this recently thanks ☺️

Carla Souza: It so much more harmonious with your face, Mel! Love it!

Juanita Ripol: I loveeee your videos and your personality is the cherry on top my hair feels so much healthier since I started following you... thx so much girll!!

Amber Ganey: I'm going to a curly hair stylist soon for the first time. Two of her specialty cuts is a devacut and an ouidad cut. Which one is better for fine/thin curks. I'm suffering from telogen efflivium and have had massive shedding and thinning. Thanks!

Deyanira Rivera: I NEED to at least trim my hair, and it's been frustrating. No curly stylists where I currently live, and it's been rough. I did last year get an undercut, and it failed miserably. I've been going through all of your videos to at least get to a better place! Thank youu!

karinac1999: Oh my goodness. I am definitely not that confident, but I will do small haircuts and trims. I love that fullness and movement. I was wondering if you had seen or heard any of the claims against olaplex? Some people are saying that it's making them lose their hair, similar to what was happening with Devacurl. I'm curious what your thoughts are.

Ella Mae: I’ve done my own hair cutting (with kitchen scissors or child safety scissors ) and I always did a horrible job lol. My first attempt was cutting bangs in 1st grade, much to my mothers dismay. I was promptly rushed to a hair stylist but unfortunately I had done a number on my hair. The. From about 5th grade to 9th grade I would braid my hair back and chop chop chop away. This left my hair looking uneven gross and when I decided to go to a real stylist I had to lose A TON of length. Now I have my favourite stylist that I go to. She cut bangs for me in October and I LOVE them. I go to her with all my hair needs and troubles and she always charges what I feel is a fair price. All this to be said, looking back as a woman in her 20s I wish I had just always gone to a stylist or just not cut my own hair. Using the wrong scissors definitely didn’t help but I also didn’t know what I was doing and ended up jacking up my hair for many many years. It wasn’t till grade 11 that I finally started to like my hair.

Jojo Parker: I absolutely love your curly hair i wish mine was thicker and fuller looking like yours ❤

JustNicole: Yeah I hated my butterfly cut to. Looked great straight but curly.... then after time the lengths looked thin because of you know.... natural shedding. I did the big chop a month ago. Shoulder length.... where the bulk of my hair was apparently. Definitely don't recommend that cut....

Alyssa Pollock: Just to add to pillowcase options: there are other satins. Cotton (aka sateen) and other plant-based satins. Maybe if one has a sewing machine, they can make their own. There are benefits to non-polyester and non-silk. Cotton kills ~40% pathogens, linen kills closer 80%. So if you have any scalp issues, choosing one of these for your pillow or bonnets can help immensely

Lisa R: Love this! Do you have any suggestions for how to adapt it for people with multiple textures? Like many curlies, the hair around my face has a tighter pattern than the back. I've been home haircutting for five years, and the thing I struggle with the most is getting volume in the back sections.

Emily JL☆ PetrifyingThePatriarchy: I'm so glad you mentioned this. I had the SAME THING happen and thought I did it wrong. Taking notes

Raven: So early. I rely on Mel so much for my hair cutting needs. Haven’t stepped into a salon since 2019 and her vids have helped keep my curls looking fabulous.

sandra cowan: new to watching you and love the videos! Brushed my hair for curls for the first time in about 40 years today and survived and loved it.

Faye Berman: I have watched your hair cutting vids, all of them, obsessively. I ought hair cutting shears, a rat tail comb for partings, framar clips, the whole 9. Yeah, I have an appointment tomorrow to get my hair cut.

Sara Nicholas: Looks amazing . I have really fine, thin hair so any tips to make it look fuller are good for me. Im gonna try it next time i cut

JoAnne Hutt: Love love love the cut, your color and the results! Wish I had the nerve to cut my own hair but I dont so back to my aunt who cuts my hair with this video saved for her. I always mention you and what youve shared at my appts.

Kathy Byrne: Wish it was that easy. Great tutorial . Thanks Mell

Wandy Gonzalez: I love it. Your hair looks amazing.

Dee Silver: Woohoo super happy. My hair is looking flat on the back. I lost my rounded layers so quickly

Cherry: Good day Mell I recently came across your channel, you are amazing in what you do! I have combination hair especially when it is cut shorter. The very front of my hair is frizzy, then wavy, and some curls (without any styling or product). I have a horrid time trying to be natural and even when it is straight, as the slightest bit of moisture in the air and the front is frizzed. I love the way I look with curls and waves, but not sure what products to use or what to avoid (I recall something about glycerine, but can't recall what exactly). I guess I should study your videos more like your friend did when he had to style your hair. Anyway, thank you for your inspiration. Lots of hugs from Cape Town, South Africa

Aline Paradis: That's exactly what I want BUT no confidence to do it!!! So I will let my professional hairdresser do the cutting!!

Renata Santos: I had my hair cut a couple of weeks ago and I regret it so much. I think it has too short layers and I have that thinning tail at the end... now I need to wait untill it grows out

Kelsey Arias: Mel, I was waiting for you to fix your cut loved the way it came out❤

spirals 73: Satin is a weave; it can be made out of different fibers like silk, rayon, acetate, polyester, cotton, viscose. So if you want the slippery texture of satin but with natural fiber, you can get silk or cotton satin.

StarryeyedCathy: I'd love to see this on longer hair. Like you said I like the straighter bottom and weight but I want my waves and curls to stack better

Lila H: Love you Mel! I have found your other hair cutting vídeos a lot easier to follow. I’ve watched this so many times but I’m still confused! Lol

Lori Nicole: Would love to know some tips for people who like an elongated, fluffier, and less defined look but also need to fight humidity.

D R: Hey Mel!! Long time viewer and first time commenter. Like others here, just wondering: where does this leave the pigtail haircut?? LOL Looking forward to your answer on that. Anywho- thanks for sharing your knowledge with us curlies. Much appreciated. I love curly cuts but my wallet does not. You’ve been a godsend with your advice. Many thanks ❤

Jasmin Smith: Your hair brushed out is SO GORGEOUS ❤❤

Sharrell Kline: Polyester (material)/satin(texture) or silk (material)/satin (texture) might make it clearer.

H T: This is precisely the haircut I wanted, but got one big layer in the back. So frustrating

Anna L: The end result is stunning!!

Nichole M: The ponytail cut kind of reminds me of the rezo cut… I got a rezo cut last time- unsure what I think- as someone who knows nothing about hair I definitely notice a difference between rezo cut and traditional layers….

Mlala: I'm super anxious doing the easiest ponytail haircuts... I might get to this one once I have a couple years more of practice is there a haircut similar to this one for long hair? That helps with volume?

Zeze: I have tried many DIY haircuts to know that this is gonna be the best. The way you layered the back of the head makes so much sense and would solve the problem many people and I have with this area being misshaped. Thank you very much mell you really are the best for giving us this tutorial

Jazmin Olmedo: I would love to see a video with tips on styling curly hair without brush styling!

christine bergantini: Hi Mel can you please do a review on bond bar from Sally’s. By the way I think your awesome and I’ve learned a lot from you since going back to styling my hair curly. I am new to your channel and I have enjoyed everything that you have demonstrated. I love how you are funny in your videos. Keep up the great work.

Sonya Padilla-Silva: Thank you Mel.. your the best! So cute and FUNNY

Nadia: I’m so confused :( could you do a video detailing how to over-direct the hair?

Tiny Dawg: I wish you would have shown more detail cutting detail on the top crown area. You through it pretty fast and only on one side. We're you worried of making it too long? I could watch you all day!

asbhk: Can you show this cut on someone with longer hair?

Carmen Pagnotta: Would this work for low density hair that is thinner on top. Lately I’ve been asking for very light layering so that I can keep most of my “thickness” at the bottom so it doesn’t look too sparse. I’m sure my stylist would be happy to try this cut, or maybe it’s similar to what she already did last time.

Sophia Aloeristok: This video is soooooooo helpful!! Thanks you as always mell ❤❤

S T: I have a hard time with cutting the perimeter evenly idg how you did it you went over it pretty quickly

Hallie VanOutryve: Damn, did you create this technique? It is genius either way. ❤ the diagrams. Thank you for sharing with us!

AriAvenger: I had a question. I noticed a lot of breakage on my ends and I was looking for the culprit. Is it possible my hair brush could be causing damage if it’s old? And if so how often do you replace?

Elisabeth Ball: Looks amazing!!

sbtyfr: Oh i wish my hair was healthy as much as yours. Yours grows so fast also. No way that i can chop that much just after 2 months. Also the first hair cut doesnt looks bad to me either. When you have healthy growing hair any haircut looks good.

diana cooper-havlik: I’ve learned so much! ✂️

Sara Gonzalez Baez: This is the first video I'm trying to watch after being tricked by someone impersonating Mell, sorry but I feel so hurt, but also so guilty!!! Greetings from Spain!!!

Purely Coincidental: I'm late here, but maybe this will help to explain silk versus satin: Satin is a weave—it's the pattern you use while weaving. In a basic weaving pattern, you go over one thread, under the next, over, under, over, under, etc. In satin, you'd do something more like go over four threads, under just one, over four, under one, etc. This is how you make the surface feel slippery—and why it's much more slippery in one direction than the other, and why the back side of the fabric is commonly not at all slippery. Silk is a fiber, normally made from the cocoons of a specific kind of moth. You can make many kinds of fabrics with silk—satin is just one option, although a common one. I wouldn't want to sleep on dupioni, for example, which is that nubby silk you often see in drapery.

xPinkMartini: I know this is a bob but how can I get this shape with medium length hair? Can I still cut it the same way?

Alejandra diosdado: Can I do this if my hair is longer? My curls are also not as curly more like 3a I believe

Natia Karchava: I can totally do this on my daughter, she's 4, obviously she's not gonna straighten her hair

Lynzi Collins: Happy texture Thursday!! Hope you’re having a great day ❤️❤️❤️

M Rence: Excellent Video Mel!!! I love how you gained your Volume back, to the Back of your Hair!!! What about guys with long curly hair, what kind of Cut would you recommend! Much ❤️❣️ Ed

Claire L: I really want to do this but it's too quick and complicated

Tatyanna Hayward: What haircut technique would you recommend for those with tighter curls (3C) that lacks volume all around the head, wants a more rounded shape with an oval face shape (if face shape matters) and doesn’t wear their hair straight? Keeping length is preferred but if 2 inches or less has to go then… ✂️ ✂️

Kilala: So my hair kinda looks like your before but thinner. What can i tell or ask my stylist to get the after result that you have?

Cleocatra: Love you Mel and you look cuuuute as ever.

Perla: Looks so nice!

TheEudaimonya: The universal curly experience of that random curl that likes to stick out like a fool

la ragazza dai 1000 difetti Charlie: stunning! i dont know if i would be able to do it tho hahah

A. V.: Mel how can I get a haircut with you. I am willing to go out there. I would like this cut for my hair which is fine, very dry, and it shrinks too much. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you

yuri m: Glad for this video! Did you on of your cuts. I have the same flat problem. Thank u thanks will do bc I’m not scared ❤

bubbles: which gives more layers: pigtail cut or this one?

Donna Abbruzzese: Your so beautiful love your curls so much ❤

Sarah Cratsenburg: PLEASE redo this video! I need a cut that I can do myself for both my "non-matching" curls and when it goes really wavy! I can't stand having a lot of product in my hair so I let it go and the curl patterns elongate throughout the week, which makes my hair lay more like it's been straightened! Even when I do use a lot of product it still goes to a 2b wave within 3 days!

Jo Cheung: Wish you lived in the UK so you could cut my hair you’re hair’s so lovely ❤

Teri: Beautiful! It was looking a bit in need of some love and now, chef's

excel04: Wasn't expecting Cotton Eye Joe lyrics, but loving it

Tina T: Love the cut!

Michelle Rodriguez: I can't wait to see your scientify Mel video on the Olaplex lawsuit.

Angela G: I just bought the verb curl forming gel and I used to discount code can’t wait to try it

Alejandra diosdado: Can I do this on long hair or is it just for medium to short hair?

Spoopy Syren: Needed this, did mine a month ago...then decided to wear my hair natural and its just not cute lmao

Sophia Aloeristok: Does this hair cut work for thin/ medium hair aswell?

Angela G: Love it ❤

NeWorlDay 20: Please please please can you do an explanation of this but slower. I got lost halfway and I so want to see how you got this great haircut.

Linzie Santana: Good thing you fixed it!

Jessica Gomez: Mel! Would you say that this cut leaves you with layers? :o

Tala Aa: I rea hope you reply to this, i was wondering if i can just do your pigtails cut to fix this, the haircut wasn’t horrible, i think the main issue is that we were supposed to bring the ponytail- both ponytails- forward when we were cutting, i think thats what caused your and my issues, do u this this could have been a factor? I spent eternity trying to section my hair. So i was wondering if i can just do your pigtails cut, i did say you would do it after a few weeks, but u never did

Dorothy: maybe a silly question but will your techniques work on permed hair also or just natural curls.

Marie M: Trying it tomorrow! Wish me luck.

yuri m: Mel could you re do the back next time lol much slower lol. Had to replay like 15x ❤
