How losing half my hair ended up changing my life for the better

At 19 I should have been worrying about what I’d wear to the pub with my friends on a Saturday night.
Instead, I was home madly googling cures for hair loss.
I should have been saving for my first European backpacking holiday.
But putting money aside for ‘miracle’ shampoos and vitamins took priority.
More than half of women experience some kind of hair loss in their lifetime, the most common being androgenic alopecia, also known as female pattern baldness.
But I never expected it to happen to me.
So when I noticed the hairs in my brush increasing at the same rate as my part line was widening, I knew something was up.

Hair loss robbed me of new experiences

First discovering my hair was thinning as a young woman was devastating. My hair was my ‘thing’. It was lusciously thick; the kind of mane my friends envied.
Going bald was supposed to be a woman’s worst nightmare, right? I kept thinking about that scene in cult classic The Craft, where the popular girl is crying in the shower as clumps of her hair fall out thanks to a spell cast by a victim of her bullying.
I wasn’t ready to be that girl.
I knew there wasn’t a cure for androgenic alopecia – yet still I searched for one.
Thousands of dollars were spent on false promises. The perpetual rollercoaster of hope followed by disappointment was all consuming.
I’d stopped going to the beach. I refused to sleep over at other people’s homes. I was scared to go out on a windy day for fear the breeze would unravel my carefully styled do, carefully manipulated to hide my thinning crown.
I was completely alone in my experience; too ashamed to discuss it with loved ones. I couldn’t even tell my GP, instead preferring the privacy of online rabbit holes.
But at 31, I’ve made peace with my balding, thanks to alternative hair.

No more false promises

Through all my googling I discovered toppers – a clip-in extension for the top of your head.
I was already wearing hair extensions, but they didn’t provide the scalp coverage I needed.
A wig felt too drastic, as I still had half of my own hair.
Sourcing a topper from a salon, trying it on was the first time I’d felt like myself in years.
It was the boost I needed, and just like that, a weight had been lifted.
It wasn’t perfect, but unlike the sham marketing ploys I’d fallen for in the past, this product delivered what it promised.
What toppers gifted me the most was time and freedom – no more late nights reading badly formatted blogs hoping the solution to my problem was buried deep in the web somewhere. No more flaking on parties and beach trips because I hated the way my hair looked.

Turning lemons into lemonade

Once I was into the swing of wearing toppers, I became obsessed with finding my perfect match.
Nothing was ever quite right.
Given I’d always wanted to run my own business, and I finally had the headspace and confidence to pursue new ventures, I figured, why not make my own pieces?
From there Lusta Hair, my online business based in Adelaide, was born.
I now help women of all ages across the globe find their dream hair, whether it be a topper or wig, and I realise what I experienced was not unique.
Hair loss can rob people of their confidence. Women have told me they’ve avoided going for job promotions, stopped dating, cancelled holidays – all because they’re embarrassed of their alopecia.
Alternative hair like toppers and wigs have the power to change that for people. And it’s a tangible product that delivers instant results.
Whether a topper is right for you or not, my advice to other women experiencing hair loss is to question everything when it comes to treatment options.
You’re vulnerable, and there are companies who will take advantage of that.
