Bleaching Black/Dark Hair? Which Developer To Use.....

Hello People,

This video is a request from a fellow Youtuber who wanted to know which developer to use (10,20,30 or 40 ) volume when bleaching black/dark hair. This is for those new to coloring and have no idea what developer to use on their hair or even when they are trying to dye their extensions/bundles. This demo of course was very educative for me too. Please comment below and let me know what you think. :)

****The measuring cup that comes with the bleach I use is 1oz.. so half of the scoop is 1/2 an ounce

Hello YouTube welcome back to my channel, so today I'm gon na do a request from one of my, I guess my popular video on here, the Woollett ona video. I have a youtuber her name. Her page name is full of life 9 and she asked me to do a video about different developers, which is a 10 20 30 40 days higher ones. But most people know about the 10 to the 40 and I she wants me to test them on all on black hair. At the same time, so you guys can see how it looks like so just in case you have fun DOS or even if you have black hair and then you are trying to get twisting type or level of lightness. But you kind of don't know which develop its developer. To use this video can kind of help. You out, I figure out what level of developer, to use based on what type of leash you use and I usually use wrecking flash lifts for most of my clients. And so that's what I'm going to be using for this video so stay tuned. And let's watch how this progress - some people don't know very what we do with this video. Let me do a little bit of explanation because I like to let people understand we'll be doing before we do. It makes a lot more sense. I know there might even some hairdressers out here who cannot or beginner hairdressers who just don't understand why we're using a different volume. Just in case you didn't, do too much color at your school or you didn't understand it. This might be a good video. Now I always talk about the colorist at home, the YouTuber colorist at home. I mean, I guess it's also for you for you to also get it so 10. 20. 30. 40 developers. What do they do and why do they have the different levels, so most bleach bleach? I guess out here, has a certain amount of minutes. That'S going to keep moisture in it, so they can get to that level of lightness that people people want. I, as I mentioned before, I use reckon flash lift and on the manufacturer's instructions I always sure to read the container or whatever package that you have to have the bleach in it. It says it processes for 50 minutes, so within that 15 minute period, if you allow it to sit on the hair for that amount of time, it's supposed to kind of like work, its way from with your zero minutes or 50 levels. So I'm gon na proceed and show you how this is going to work out. But what I'm gon na do is I'm going to allow the bleach to sit on the hair that I have at the same time using different levels of developers so that you can see how fast or how lighter the hair gets. So I hope this explanation is OK and it kind of works out for queries. I guess one of my audiences beginner intermediate or even advanced, think you understand what I'm talking about. You don't really need this explanation, but then this is for the basic person who doesn't understand why 10 20 30 40 - it's even necessary to use. I have my set up ready to go so let's get started. Okay, so, as you can see, I have the 10 20. 30 40. I have already measured about half a cup of this goop in the bowls which I've labeled 10, 20, 30 and 40, and I have the brushes ready to go. You already know me, I'm pretty organized when I try and do this these things so that I can't I don't make any mistakes. I also have my iPhone timer set up for about 40 minutes. I'M going to let it sit for about 40 minutes cos. It'S not a focus, you can see it's set up to 40 minutes and what I'm going to do is. I am for this bleach for these bleach mixture. Usually you can do. A ratio of 1 is to 1 or 1 part of bleach to 2 parts of developer. So I think I'm gon na do one part of bleach to 2 parts of the varieties, half a scoop for all the measurements. So I'm going to start off with the 10 and I'm gon na measure about a full scoop which is going to be 1, is to 2 measurement, not in between I'm just gon na, be wiping it off with a paper towel so that I'm not mixing like The different levels I realistically I'm supposed to be using a different school for each one, but I don't have a different scoop. I use measuring measuring cups to do this, so this is the 20 pouring the 20 in here wiping off the container again to remove all traces of develop Rain Man. This is like Nestle, it's not the smartest way to go, but I was like this way. I can get this thing clearing at some more developers, so so 3d put it in there. This is the 40 and I put it in there, I'm beginning to apply with a 10 volume, I'm saturating the hair with as much as possible, so y'all can see how it processes I'm doing this as quickly as I can, and it doesn't look like I'm going Fast, but I'm going pretty fast, so you can see it can develop quickly. So when there's no lapse in that time between the it that much lapse in time between the 10 and the 40 I'll turn it around. So I can get the bleach all over the hair. Sometimes you have splotches in there if you don't saturate it properly, so I'm going over making sure that every little beat of the every little piece of the hair is saturated. Applying 220 going over that 1/2. Applying enough bleach all over the hair so ensure that I have enough enough enough saturation all over the hair. Turning that around to and applying the developer on there to ensure that that one also is completely saturated with bleach going on to the 30 same thing. This is like pretty much making sure that every single piece of the hair is completely saturated, I'm doing that for the 32 and then I'll go on to the 40 okay, so party really quickly ice pick ups, I can - and I set my timer to 40 40 Minutes so I'm hitting start now start 40 minutes, and then I see how this processes, so I'm going to cover, cover this whole sub with foil and we're just gon na allow it so I washed off the wash the bleach offer all of them and as you Can see I've laid it all down? 10. 20. 30. 40 developer. You can tell that the 10 is pretty dark, meaning that the speed in which it took for it to get to this level of kind of lightness. Is it wasn't that fast? And then you see the 20 and then you see the 30 and the 40. Now the 20 or 30 kind of almost looks I like and I'm gon na zoom in for all of them for all of them. So you can actually see the 40. You can tell the is the lightest within that a lot of time of 40 minutes, so this is kind of kind of how your bundles will kind of look like if you use 10, 20, 30 or 40 developer. Sometimes it's also based off of the type of hair, like I said, porosity, texture and also, if you were using fake hair, it's also gon na be based off on how good the hair is. You know they sell Brazilian Indian, whatever is also based on if the hair is good enough for its online map. So this was just like my testing, but it's just a good example for you to be able to see how it would look like I'm gon na zoom in so you can see how it looks like close up now. This is a 10 close up close up. That'S a 20 close up and if you can look at the 10 in the 20 and then I'm gon na move to the 30 C for the 20 and the 30, they look kind of close alike. I guess, but I feel like the 30 is a little bit lighter and then I'm gon na go to the 40 night. If you look at the 40, the 40 is the lightest of all of them, and even in my will of edit video, I ended up using a swatch that I had. I had a bleach 240 so that I'll be able to get it as light as possible and also when I tone it, the toner will work because, if I put toner on the 10 really, what am i turning out? So, as you can see, I'm going back around so you can see watch it closely, so you can see the differences. So I hope this video is gon na help. You decide which developer that you're going to be using when you have no idea about any of this stuff and you're just trying to tone or not tone, but mostly bleach out your bundles and get a lighter color. So a 40 volume developer will get you to a level of lightness quicker than a 30 would and also a 30 would get you there quicker than a 20 would and 20 will get you there quicker than a 10 would so pretty much the different levels of Developer is just based off timing, so let's just say that you wear bleaching hair and then you wanted it to get light quickly and you can apply the hair quickly for it to get light quickly, like maybe in 20 minutes and the hair had it like. Hair has strength and it can get to a certain lightness quickly and you can apply it quickly. You can use a 40 depending on how the hair is, how much strength the hair is and how much you have colored or not. Colored to here, you can get to a certain amount of lightness quickly with a 40 volume developer. People who are not very fast of applying color and leave my once they bleech to sit on there or these dissident they're longer. They can start off reason like lower levels, which is 20 and it will get. It would take some time for it to get to some. I guess level of lightness that they are looking for so realistically between a 10 and a falling volume is really the time the time that it would take. So it's more like a chemical reaction. How faster can we get there if we're going to be running? How quickly can we get there and 10 will get me there? Slow at 20 will get me there a little bit faster, 30. Okay, we have momentum and 40. We gon na get there fast. So, depending on how much strength that you think that your hair has or even the bundle that you're about to be dying like let's say you got a brown brown brown level, I guess brown, hair bundles. Something has been done to the hair for it to be that light, and so, if you put too much bleach on there or even the hair was starting off out to be a 613 and you wanted it to be platinum, it has been bleached to a 613. So if you put to much higher level developer on there, the hair, you might damage the hair so depending on what the situation is and what you're trying to achieve, then you pick the type of developer that you want to use with your bleach, but most of The time starting off slowly, a twenty might be a good way to start off, or even if you we're just kind of like that, really wasn't sure that maybe a 10. You can start with 10 so that it would take some time to get there. But always remember that it's based on the particular situation, the strength of the hair, the porosity of the hair, the texture and all those things come for you to get to a saleable people. I hope you like this video to not try and do my best to show you what I know, and so you can get a good example, a good idea of kind of what you want to do if you're a beginner in this. So I hope this helped. Don'T forget to Like comment and subscribe to my videos or my channel and also click the notifications button, so you can be notified every time. I have a new video out here. I'M going to be doing awake soon, so seis to stay tuned. For that and don't forget to comment, let me know what you think. Okay, thank you. So much for watching into my next video see

Nakia Cox: This is exactly what I was looking for. Wanted a chocolate brown look and was trying to decide which developer to go with. Thank you.

Kelly E.: The 10 look gorgeous. Such a beautiful chocolate brown. When I do “highlights” in my black hair I’m gonna go for the 10. Since I want them to be a little darker I’ll probably only leave the bleach on for 30 mins though :)

Joyrdan: out of all the videos i’ve watched that has to do with how developer looks on dark/black hair, this was the most informative. thank you!

Pink Titan: Informative as always. I would have liked you to evaluate the condition of the hair with each level of developer after the bleaching.

Dorcas Whitaker: This was the best explanation about developer I've heard so far. I'm a teacher, and I know demonstration increases understanding. Question: What are the disadvantages of using highest volume (40) other than fsster timing? Thank you so much for Sharing.

Yvreux: Oh my God you're a lifesaver! I've been thinking of bleaching and dyeing my hair recently and I found this wonderful video. Thank you so much!

PrincessG: Thanks for making this easier and fully explained you did great!

Jada Masson: Thank you very informative video. I’m trying to get my hair (human wig) to 613 color, I’ve bleached it a few days ago with BW2 and a 50 developer but it was a fail (I got it to a medium-light brown color and it’s still in pretty good condition ) I was told by a friend who’s a stylist to mix 50+20 developer to help lift it to the color I’m trying to achieve. What do you recommend I should do?

D Glorious: Great comparison video sis thanks. I have a question. I tried dyeing natural off black hair with a dark brown box dye, and there's not much difference in the result. So not knowing much about developers, I went and got what the store clerk suggested and got a number 10. Haven't used it yet because since I bought it I've been reading articles on developers, and most of them said that a #10 is not going to do much either, that it should be a # 20 or # 30 to go lighter 1 or 2 full shades lighter. I just want dark brown or maybe medium brown not blonde. So do you think I should return the 10 for a 20?I do not want to add bleach. Thank you in advance.

Kyla Dupuy Chavez: This is an awesome video! Exactly what I was Looking for, since I naturally have dark hair. Thank you so much!

Nazahah Nawal: Hey, I currently have dark brown hair (natural) and was dyed once for fun and is currently still dark brown but dyed. I am planning to beach up my whole head making every hair strand as light as possible. Which volume developer would you recommend. Thankyou x

Lisa DiStefano: Interesting! I have a question that I’m hoping you can give me your professional opinion on. I had black, fine but a lot of hair, I bleached it on December 26th with 30% developer after 15 minutes, it started getting readily hot so naturally I panicked and washed it off with Matrix Brass odd shampoo then applied T18 Wella toner. My hair now has a mix of level 9 and 6. I’m hoping that I don’t have to bleach it again to get it to at least a level 9 to tone my hair to a nice light ash blonde and although I’ve been putting deep treatments in my hair like protein and keratin packs, my hair is still very dry and I’m afraid to damage it even more. What would you recommend for me to achieve this light Ash blonde in Wella toners? You’re help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sasha Gallery: Thank you for your enthusiasm and organization! Clean and perfect test! Could you please do the test with high lift special blond coloring ( High lift Majirel, Wella or Clairol) with different developers :)

H Syed: So helpful! Thank you so much. Really was debating between a 20 and 30. First time doing a diy balayage !

ChristandMe: This is exactly what I wanted to see. I'm trying to get from dark black-brown hair to brown with a #20. So now I think I can do it! Thank you!

Dulce Mae: This was really helpful.I'm taking notes. I know nothing about color/bleach etc. I purchased a #30 Developer to use on a human hair lace wig but, I've been scared to use it. I guess all I need now is bleach. Wish me luck! Thanks for sharing. Very good lesson and demonstration!

Margaret Kellogg: Thank you! I think I will start with a 20 and I can always leave it longer or repeat the process in a couple weeks.

Non_toxic Green: Love these comparison videos so much! Educational and practical.

Just B: Hi, love your videos. Thank you!!!!!! Do you mind doing a video on precolored hair? Like someone who went from platinum to black then to platinum? Or red to black. Just so we can see the effect from the bleach on non virgin hair. Thank you!❤️

K Dee: I’ve never watched one of your videos but I found this very informative.

Subaas_Baig: Thanks for the demonstration. This makes understanding developer level easier!

Jonny: I know this was over a year ago but I was wondering if I was trying to lighten my hair with the least amount of damage. Can I do a volume 20 developer multiple times(spaced times) to lighten my hair with less damage or will doing a 30 volume for one time be better?

Sasha Gallery: Hello :) Could you do the test « low and slow » vs « fast and furious », which means low level developer 10 or/and 20 during 60 minutes or even longer (and/or do it a few times in a row ???) vs 40 and 50 but 1 time for 40-50 minutes...That would be great to know if I want to use 20, but do it 2-3 times or once but with 40 ;)

Chasi385: I’m so thankful I found this channel. This was so informative. You probably just saved my hair. Thank you!! New subbie

Latravitia Sorrell: Love this video. This is what I was looking for and I found it thank you so much

melisa pena: You are very detailed and informative, thank you keep it up

Rainey: This video was extremely helpful. Thank you sooo much ! :)

Ann Castro-Baker: This helps a lot. The one thing I am still wondering is.... is there a cut off time when the developer shuts off.. not sure if that makes sense or not... anyhow thanks so much.

K Dee: Also what tips would you give to someone who wanted to lighten hair (to medium or light brown) which was henna’d black to cover gray hairs.

Gift Onaiwu: Thanks a lot exactly what i was looking for, so helpful.

Patricia Helsel: Thank you soooooo much! I love you! You explained the process so well

mtadiva: You are the truth learning so much from you definitely a new subbie I don't want to miss anything, ready for, all this schooling and I appreciate the demonstrations as you explain

Lisa Desirè: This really helped me out! Thank you!

Allie N.: Thank you so much for making this video! You are the only person that I could find make a video showing this transformation and explanation.

Whitney: i’ve been wanting to dye my hair a bright red for a very long time but only without bleach. i’ve seen many videos of people dying their hair with 40 developer to get a bright red look but i don’t know if that will severely damage my hair. i have thick dark hair and locs. Is 40 developer too much for my hair and if so what should i use? also, (i’ve dyed my hair years ago but without bleach or anything that could damage my hair at a salon so it wasn’t really apparent) once again, i want nothing to do with bleach. please respond <3

R6selyn: Hi! Im trying to dye my hair black (it’s dark brown at the moment) and creme needs to be mixed with developer, is it okay to use 30?

Jess: Love your videos! You definitely deserve more subscribers!! Keep uploadinggg

rainy: Does anyone know which developer to use (how many times, for how long, etc...) to achieve golden blonde hair from natural black hair?

b r i t t . k n e e: I should be getting ready for work. I’m binge-watching all your videos.

The Gloved Natural: This was so helpful! Thank you

Tasha P: Very informative video here. It helped me a great deal. Thank you

rs585916: Thank you for being so meticulous in your videos!!!!!

Baby D: Your amazing. I’m loving the energy. I was trying to do an ombré effect and the YouTube’s bleach one developer then make you buy dyes for same color lol this would be better

Kai Lester: Is it safe for your hair to lighten using 20 volume without damaging curl pattern?

Empress Knox: So my natural hair is short and this is my first time dying my natural hair what measurements should I use because I definitely don’t need the whole bottle. This video is the best video I have seen explaining everything in full detail

Shanna Berry: Just what I was looking for thank you so much

FAVOUR CYNTHIA LAMAH: Blessings First of all thanks for your presentation, it was very inspiring and insightful, not many people love what they do or do what they love and that is a blessing... QUESTIONS: Naturally since my 9 year old I started having gray hair and I just started coloring BLACK, which developer should I use??? I want to keep the intense dark black Color for now Also JOICO has a lot of different color shampoo and Conditioner ,which one goes best with the black Color??? What is the difference (if there is)between DEVELOPER and ACTIVATOR, should I use both???or the DEVELOPER is more than enough Later I want to keep the gray hair Color, because that's my natural hair Color anyway Which number of joico Color should I look for??? will it still go with the same DEVELOPER, SHAMPOO and CONDITIONER I will be using for the black Color or will have to change all of the above also for the gray color???? Please advise and thank for sharing your gift Blessings

BB: Thank you so much for this video! Helped me out

HV: Hello, my natural hair is medium brown, I started graying so I dyed it dark brown. Is it better to use color oops and then bleach or bleach directly? I appreciate your response, thanks!

Zeltomation1: Hi, I have a question. My hair is naturally a medium blonde colour but last year I started dying it using permanent pinks and purples (box dyes). In June, I dyed it a very vibrant pink colour and after 2 months I decided to dye my hair a very dark brown so that my hair would look 'natural' again. I really want to go back to a lighter colour that isn't dark brown. Due to my hair not naturally being brown, will the bleach still work on my already dyed hair? And what developer percentage should I use? I've recently bought a bleach and developer and the developer is 20%, will that work? I don't want to bleach my hair to a light platinum blonde, a ginger or a light brown result would be fine honestly. Sorry for the ramble but I don't know if it would still work. Thank you in advance, I love your video :)

Carla Lucero Morocho: Hi!! I love all of your videos they are so fun to watch because you are so talented with hair just one quick question, do all developers work the same? For example, will Redken 20 volume developer work the same as Wella 20 volume developer??

Ayisha Alhassan: This was so helpful thank youuuu!

Lala~: You are truly professional ^_^ Thank you this has helped me a lot

Nowelle Gardona: Thanks again for this very helpful video! <3

Debsruti Majumder: This is so informative. Loved it! I have natural black fine hair and want to do a subtle brown balayage/ombre myself. If I just bleach with 20 vol and use a purple shampoo will it look light brown?

Pippys Playtime!: Only person on YouTube that makes the videos we are allllll searching for! Thank you!!!

Nia KAY: Very informative :) thank you!

Makmak: Hii! This was a very helpful video but I have a question. So I have really dark brown hair and I’ve been thinking about bleaching and then rinsing my hair a dark red( using kiss express colors). Do you think the color would take on my hair if I use a rinse instead of a dye?

Kyky Reid: I have dark curly hair, and was curious as to which developer I should use for L’Oreal’s magenta?

Jewel Doodnath Hanson: I had dyed my hair with Bigen permanent hair color two boxes, I had used two boxes of color opps extra strength to remove the hair color but it didn’t work. Pretty much I’m trying to get my hair to be a honey blonde. Which developer should I use

Starlyne Curtain u . . ? 7: This the kind of video i'm looking for, thank you :)

christine azor: Never dyed/bleach my hair before and I’m black so I have natural dark brown hair and I want to go with a gingerish/cinnamon with the adore bottles type look which developer would you recommend? I’m really not trying to damage my hair using bleach. Can I use the developer by itself really trying to avoid bleach?

Hash Mua: Mam I have dark brown hairs and I want to achieve natural golden highlights, which no. of developer should I use? Also do I need to apply golden colour to enhance the colour of bleach?

Tanya Thompson: I was COMPLETELY lost and YOU helped me so much.

Maira Khan: I have jet black hair so I bought blond hair dye because I wanted my hair to be brown (lighten up to 3-4 levels) which developer should I use ?

Candice Williams: Can I use 10 developer on relaxed hair? If so, how long should I wait between relaxer and bleaching?

Carissa Kaisen: Can you possibly help me? I bleached with loreal feria extreme platinum from Walmart. So no developer.. lol then wella t18 with 20 developer.... I didnt saturate the bleach enough on the lower parts of my hair , mainly being the top layer of hair .If I'm explaining this right..... I hope so. The lady at Sally's told me what developer to use .. well obviously the outcome wasnt good...so I went back to the same Sally's. 2 different ladies were there. Both just as "helpful" as the last . Put together they both had no interest in helping me. But nonetheless I ended up buying loreal quick blue bleach and 2 ion toners. Platinum lace and icy white bc I wanted to mix but doubt it will but I was super torn . They said I should use 20 volume developer with the bleach and the toner..... before the 2nd visit and since the second visit I've been doing so much research. As much as I can to learn the differences in everything and levels ... all that. But I'm still extremely confused on the developer. I'm watching ppl use 10 or 30 on hair that was the same natural color as me and looks the same after bleaching...they're using a different volume with their toners still.... I'll see ppl use 20 and 30 or 20 and 10. I've watched ppl use 30 and they said it wasbc their hair is so dark. ...I go to Sally's today. A different one. And these women were amazing. Pulled a book out and they really cared and tried to help me. Well apparently they think I shouldn't bleach my entire head. Just bleach the areas I missed .... and the toners I have already will not work until I have more sessions of lightening. .. They said I needed a violet undertone for my toner. The platinum lace is actually darker than you'd think. But I bought wella t18 again bc it says violet for the undertone. The lady also said I shouldn't be using 20 vol for the toner. That I should use 10 for tone and 20 for bleaching. . That it would fry my hair if I did 20 on toner... .IDK WHAT TO DO. .. I bleached it the first time a week ago. .. I got a hair masque. I think maybe they want me to use 10 on toner bc of bleaching a week ago and wanting to do it again. She was like noooooo dont do it lol. The other place just didnt give a crap. Didnt make me feel good. But I just wanted a platinum blonde but damn I dont think I can I want it be done and over with this go around bc my hair isnt very healthy. I havent dyed it for 2 years until last week. I went from hair down to my hips to hair a bit above my shoulders. And I've been using coconut oil since I bleached it .

Gwendolyn Brown: That was very helpfulTHANK YOU.

Lazy Lifestyle: Hi, I have black hair and I have been using bleach with 10 developer 3 times (once a week, 30 mins, and olaplex no.3 only once during those 3 bleaching process) and now its level 4 bleached hair. I want to go to honey blonde, but slowly since I have 2b to 3a hair and I read and watched a lot of youtube videos that for wavy/curly/coil hair needs to go slow in order to mantain the curls (which so far my curls still mantains, looks about 80% similar to my virgin hair curl patterns). But now I am wondering, if I am going too slow? Or should I bleach again with another 10 vol, do protein treatment and then use highlift colour (like schwarzkopf highlift) with 30 vol and another olaplex and protein treatment to mantain my curl patterns and achieve honey blonde?

Neang Cheav: hi ❤️ i have a very dark black natural hair, and i wanted to bleach it, will 30% work bc i dont want to damage my hair using 40%

Ebony Gibson: Could you please review in your research MyIdentity Creme lightener how you use and what are benefits when dying hair. Enjoying your videos very informative ❤️

Moylan loo: Have you ever considered being a teacher, cuz you’ll be very good at it. And I guess the higher the volumen of the developer the more damage does to the hair?

fosterful: Great video. It was very helpful to me. Was the original hair color 1B or 1?

Neffer Kerr: THANK YOU so much for this!

Samantha Lopez: This is so helpful!!

Leslie Arnelle TV: amazing review . thank you!

elyon v: Best informational visual vid out there.. thank you so much! Subscribing today

olivecat: i'm trying to bleach my black hair to a lightness that hair dye will show up on. this is very helpful. this is my first time and i think i'm going to get the manic panic blue lightning 30 volume. it has blue toner to cancel out the orange tones that happen when bleaching black hair

Elyse W: SIS WHEN I TELL YOU ON GOD I WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE I DYED MY HAIR! I USED 30 AND IT WENT WAY TO LIGHT NOW MY BLUE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ROYAL NAVY IS BLUEBERRY INDIGO. WHAT CAN I DO TO DARKEN IT? 10 DEVELOPER WITH THE ROYAL NAVY SO IT WILL DEPOSIT THE COLOR? OR JUST PUT THE ROYAL NAVY OVER THE BLUEBERRY INDIGO SINCE IT IS ALREADY BLUE? I DO NOT NEED TO BLEACH AGAIN IT'S ALREADY WAY TOO LIGHT. HELP PLEASE!

Goddess Energy: It's obvious you love what you do . Just found your channel...

Everyday Citizen: Great reference for any hair color application. Thanks
