How To Upside Down French Braid A Base Wig (Base Wig Tutorial)

It's tutorial time! I wanted to share with you one of my favorite beauty secrets. As you may know from watching my channel I am very partial to the classic snatched back ponytail. An upside down French braid for basing wigs. This is a drag staple especially among camp queens. I wanted to take the time to teach you how it's done, and to introduce you to my new Fashion Doll wig from Jaymes Mansfield Beauty that was designed for this very purpose.

#JAYMESMANSFIELD #BASEWIG #WIGS

Hi everyone, james mantle here, bringing you yet another video. Oh my god, you guys, i am so excited to bring you a new tutorial. Yes, it's been a while, since i've done a tutorial, so i figured i'd, compile this for you folks, so you don't have to keep going back to videos and i have to keep going like. You know, check that selena video i did years ago. I think we're going to clean this up now and i'm going to show you how to do a base: wig, updo, ponytail, yes or a french braid ponytail. You know upside down, basically face you need to do in order to do an updo on a wig. All right, i do this on quite a few of my iconic blonde videos and i always kept the like call back to like be sure and check. You know a video in this playlist for this. It'S too much, i'm gon na make you a dedicated video. That way, we never have to have this discussion again. Okay, so let's get started first things. First, i have to introduce a very special guest. I have here a brand new wig in my line at james mansfield beauty. It is a new premium. Wig called the fashion doll blonde. I am so excited to bring it to you guys because, oh my gosh, i have been working on this forever now. Okay, now, as you know, i'm a queen that tends to wear a lot of updos. It'S true. I have my hair pulled back all the time like a bump or a topper on top, and it's a painstaking process to have done, because i always have to ventilate hairlines, like ernie, has spent hours making custom hair lines for me just so. I could wear this style, i'm going to show you folks, on the new fashion, doll blonde, how to do an updo, a base wig, you know a base for it updo and maybe even show you guys how i put on my hairstyles that i wear all the Time in my videos, okay, you're getting a lot, i'm getting very intimate with you folks today now, first things: first, i'm gon na try this wig on, for you folks give you an idea of what this wig looks like okay, i'll be welcome back. This is the fashion doll blonde on the head and girl, i'm feeling it okay. It looks a little bit like donatello versace on me right now, with the smokey eye and the long hair like it's very you know how did miss fame do. It is like donatello versace. Why was she russian? We may never know anyways. This is the fashion doll blonde. I am so excited to debut this for you guys, because, honestly, i have worked so hard on this wig me and ernie have been plotting for months to get this done. Okay, one thing i'm really really excited to show you folks is: i love to wear my hair and updos, as you may have seen on this channel. I love my hair snatched back with like a topper on top. Well, we have a beautiful hand-tied hairline that will cover the overgrowth of my hair. Yes, i have a terrible sideburn problem, like elvis presley but it'll even cover that look at that. It'S not even glued down yet, but imagine it glued down honey. Yes, you can pull her back or style her out big, because she has a lot of hair in her as well. Yes, she is a beautiful 613 blonde, color she's synthetic also, so you can curl it with steam. I recommend that also. This is the front of the wig okay girl. Look at the back. Look at my back all that hair still flowing down my back. That'S the front! Oh my gosh! Yes, what drag queen wouldn't want this, because i designed this wig with drag queens in mind. Okay, not to mention she is also long 30 inches curled in a wavy set. I'M having a glamour overload right now. Oh my gosh, i'm so excited to style this wig up for you. Folks. If you want to know more about this wig, it is again the fashion doll blonde at jamesman2beauty.com. In my premium wig section, all the information is listed on the website and like below in the description. Okay, i've left no stone unturned, i'm so excited to get started and start styling up this wig. I'M going to show you guys how to do a base wig for an updo so that you never have to like be told to go to a playlist of like six different kind of videos i can just like hey. I have a dedicated video for this. All right, i thought you guys. Okay, this is a tutorial, let's say: okay, so, like i'm, not gon na. Do like a be right back, it's gon na be a quick cut. It'S gon na be like be right. Back. Welcome back all right, you guys! I have it all pinned down to the head. Let'S get started on this okay now i feel, like i really have kind of figured out what i like to do with updo ponytails, and i have to say it was from working with trixie on trixie motel that i really kind of perfected how to redo this Hair and redo it quickly because in that show she wore a lot of these hairstyles and we had to like take them down and readjust hair all the time. So i got pretty good at figuring out exactly what you know. What settings she liked her ponytails on and honestly this is a camp dreg staple this ponytail updo. Basically, this base wig to be able to do a multitude of different hairstyles with very little effort. Now you may be wondering james. Why don't you just make the ponytail and just have it stuck that way forever? Well, i'll, explain to you guys. The reason why i like doing this is because of versatility. Okay, you have the base, which already looks good and you can adjust it with bang pieces. All sorts of different toppers and you save space in your suitcase because you're not packing a bunch of different wigs. You just have you know your ponytail pieces, your bun pieces, bangs, whatever you have to like switch it up as long as you have like a braid switch or any kind of hair piece or bows to block like to hide the join you're good to go and Right now, i'm just running my brush through this to get it nice make sure, there's no kinks in it because we're going to flip it upside down. We want it as sleek as possible, and i have this whole front section where the hairline is pulled away, because that's going to get pulled back, we're doing like a couple of different ponytails, but we have to do a braid first in order to get the base. Wig going now, this part can be a little complicated. It'S just doing an updo braid, it's a french braid and it can be as neat as you want to be, or it can be sloppy again, depending on what you're wearing people aren't really going to see. The back of it because it's going to get covered with falls and stuff. So what i do is i take it off the mannequin head, and i demonstrated this before in the selena video you flip it upside down and you brush it through i'll brush it. For you folks, and then we're going to go to the iphone footage to show you the braiding process, which can be a journey all right now. I have it flipped upside down like this. I brushed it through and it is all detangled. This is what we want to start doing our braid, so i'm going to go to our iphone footage and show you my braiding process, like i said before, it can be really really neat or it could be a little thrown together again now, no one's going to Really see it, it just has to look like it's pulled out all right now. First things: first, we're going to take a section of the hair right here. I usually do about right there and just take all that out now we're going to split it in three sections like you're doing a braid like so you're gon na start braiding it to get the start going. You can go tight or loose. I usually like loose because it gives you a little more wiggle room, especially more wiggle room, the better when it comes to doing drag queen hair. You want to like be able to expand on your head and i'm going to pull a section from here and combine it with that there. Now, that section is bigger and it's pulling and it's going to expand like that. We got a big section and we're going to do that again. You just got to make sure you keep your grip with it. Don'T let them fall out of your grip and just take sections and be mindful of how the sections are going if you have to brush it a little bit just brush it to get the direction going right and we're going to combine this with another section. This one looks nice: let's combine her with that. Now we're gon na braid over that braid. Look at that fantastic! We got a good french braid going already. Okay, now we're going to pull for another section and the middle one. I don't really worry too much about it, because you're gon na start pulling sections and it's gon na start getting bigger and fatter. Now, let's pull from another section and she is going to join this little skinny guy and again just be mindful of where the tracks are. Basically if they start to get a little they'll start to like start to pull apart and they'll start to see sections. So just go back and just pull a little more hair and brush it. If you need to, let's start adding more sections in but as you can see, we got a braid going and it's twisting up like that and when it expands. My head it'll start to cover all this, and you won't have to worry about that. So more sections here we're going to combine her with this section here and we're basically going to go until we get to almost the base of the head, like the crown of the head, we're going to work our way up to that, because we're going to ponytail It off and then do something with the front section, but for the most part all we're doing here is just braiding upwards and being mindful of everything there we go great, oh my god, so much hair, oh got my work cut out for me. Okay, let's throw her over on this side, braiding some more i'm gon na tilt my legs a little bit get a better grip there. We go oh we're already to the crown of the head. Okay! Well, i'm gon na pinch that off, like that see pinching it and we got a good french braid going and we're gon na pull the rest back. When we like come back again, this front section all gets combined, but right now we're going to ponytail that off. We got a good french braid going, okay, ponytail holder and you can do one or two. I usually just do one depends what you want. Usually one is enough. If it feels like it's not sturdy enough or if you have a lot of hair, you can do two depends what you want to do with it. This is also a great start if you want to do like an ariana grande ponytail or a barbie ponytail, where you wrap it around. That is a good french braid to start with it all braids upwards, and it looks nice and neat and again it's pulled a little taut right now, but once it gets on my head, it's all going to stretch out and, like you know, fan out it's not Going to look too tight and you can always adjust it by pulling sections out to adjust it like it's really easy and really adjustable, and it looks nice like when your hair flips up it looks nice all right, i'll, be right back and we'll start styling. It all right, we are back. I have the french braid all going up now, i'm going to show you what to do next, okay, so taking a brush, i'm sure it got a little tangled while we're doing that. So i'm just going to go through the ends and just work my way from the bottom to brush through it to get nice and untangled, because you don't want to go into this tangled otherwise, it'll set that way from multiple uses and the one of the reasons We do our hair like this is because the wig will actually last a lot longer. So if you decide, i don't need an updo base anymore. You can take it down. You have fresh hair to work with. You can reset it into something else or just style. It into an entirely new style and just clean out your front. The one downside to doing hair like this is: it is a bit of an upkeep. You have to do constant maintenance with it, but you should be doing that anyway, with your wigs, something you should already be doing like you have to clean your laces frequently i recommend, before every use and after every use just clean the lace. You know just make a habit, you know to make it part of your routine with some 99 alcohol and a little elbow grease. You can get that lace, clean and the reason we do this is it'll actually stay on with just spirit gum and whatever security tins. You need all right now. I just wrapped it up into a bun doesn't have to be crazy. Neat, it's just to be the base so that hair net that comes with the wig we're going to put that around there. You can use white black, it doesn't matter. It'S not going to be seen. This is all basically creating a little bump all right again, it's just to get the hair out of the way. Okay, she is on there. She is taught now the front section. This requires a bit of work now. What i like to do personally is so that the hair doesn't look too flat on the head, i like to add a bit of a permatease to the base, at least to the front of the face that way, it has a little more lift that way. It'S not like super flat to your head. It makes your head look so small, it's one of those little touches i like to do for my own wigs, i feel like it adds a bit of realism to it. So here we go take a little section and this has a very fine hairline. So i'm really excited to work on it add a little bit of packed combing to it tiniest bit, not a whole lot. Let that go back and i'm only doing the back section and a little bit of the front, not where the hairline is now. I make an exception in the area by the ear tabs, because these have a tendency to slip out the most. So i just usually do the smallest bit of back combing. That way, i can slick it back and it's not going to start to work its way down and slip out like i said this is only really a step i do for base wigs for updos if you're teasing a wig full out, tease everything. Why not, but for this that hairline is really the selling point gorgeous. Okay, i'm excited! Oh, my god, you guys! I love these ponytail looks okay. I really do like. I really feel like they look so chic and it's like so versatile when you think of like classic classic camp drag. Some of the finest queens have gone. This hairstyle from bianca del rio, varla g merman trixie's worn this hairstyle a lot recently. I wear this hairstyle. A lot, i don't think ben de la creme worth no ben uses her own hair. I learned that when i worked with her on brady bun, she uses her own hair, which is also a marvel, but it is such a stunning look again. All i'm doing here is just combing the hair back, because i want it to get nice and sleek and by not adding any teasing to the hairline. Look how fine that looks like you're really getting the detail of it. Oh my gosh, it makes me think of like 1960s hairstyles a lot. That'S often what i do with this, like it thinks they're like night of the living dead with barbara, and she had that slick back hairstyle with the beat like the little ponytail piece in the back. Okay, now pulling another hair tie, looking pretty good gon na ponytail. That off, and the only thing that really is a little bit of work, is just making sure you have a grip on the hair and just trying to keep it taut so that doesn't get too loose in the front or in sections just constantly brushing over it. Okay and now those little pins i put in there, i only put the two in there for a reason, so i could easily remove them we're going to combine these ponytails together. That was just the kind of pin it so it's out of the way. So i can do this part now. You have two ponytails here, it's kind of like the girl from the new star wars movie minus one: okay, i'm gon na combine those together with another hair tie and putting that hairnet on. There is really useful because it's keeping that long hair out of my way while i do this and we're gon na, actually take it off and just combine all of it after this look at that gorgeous and again if it starts to peak a little bit back Here don't worry about that because that's why we're doing it this way, you actually can cover it up with your updos and your braid and everything no one's gon na see it yeah. Now, if a track pops up, don't worry about that again, it's pulled taut onto a wig head. This isn't the size of your head. It'S gon na adjust! You can fan it out when you actually have it on your head. So don't let that discourage you or anything it's gon na happen, but that's why you have the braid. You can actually pull the braid and make it fan out all you really need to worry about being super super neat. Is this bun section, because all this stuff can be adjusted very easily and again, if you want to do like a barbie pony, you just keep adding that to that and it can become like a long ponytail like that lots of stuff you can do, but we're Going to twist it up and we're going to butt it up again, you could do like the sock bun. Anything you want a braid whatever you prefer is completely up to you. I usually like to do that. So it's up high and we're gon na hair tie the crap out of it. There we go okay, it's a high bun! Let'S put that hair nut over it again. This is honestly just to keep it nice and secure and neat, and when you decide to take it down, you have fresh hair to use also works as an added bump to your hair icing. Girls do donuts all sorts of stuff to their hair. Lots of little hacks you can do bobby, pin that down just to keep it in one place. That is the base all right. She is ready to go now. What i'm going to do is actually put her on and show you the ways you can actually work. This out, it's actually a really versatile hairstyle. It'S super easy. It shouldn't take you any longer than like 20 minutes to do this. The braiding is the hardest part honestly, but it's so versatile. The amount of hairstyles you're gon na get from it like check her out, and it's really really adjustable, like, i said, don't get distracted by track showing because you can always adjust the hair and fan it out to make it like work. Let me just rearrange some things i'll put her on and i'll show you how to work out this hairstyle. Okay, all right! We are back. This is the final result, sort of okay look at this hairline. Oh my gosh. I am obsessed yes, this is so cute for a base wig. Oh my god. It is perfect! Oh yeah! I can't even i can't even talk. Okay, i'm so excited! Oh my gosh. I haven't really tried it on yet now it's all fully in drag girl. I'M gagged. I'M sorry, i gagged myself. I can't help it. I did a really good job, i'm so excited okay, okay, so i'm going to show you what i do now: okay, we have our base. Wig all set up. Our little bump is here now all you have to do is just find your topper or ponytail piece or wig of choice to use the back piece. I have a back piece right here: topper i'm going to take it and put it on top of my head and adjust as i see fit and like that it's gon na look crazy at first, because again you have to do a little few things to hide. Some stuff so get a bobby pin. My bobby pin of choice is marilyn, fay bobby pins, they're, really good and thick they're three inches, and they come in a wide variety of colors. This one is their blonde color. As you know, i tend to wear a lot of blondes. You just stick it through, pin it in and just do like four or five. That'S usually what i use as many as you feel like you need these stronger bobby pins are really good for holding it. On i haven't really had any issues of hair flying off in a while. I also don't really do a whole lot to merit that i'm not doing tumbles anymore, but there we are she's secure. Now we have to hide this join so get yourself any kind of braid or headband or bow. I use a switch. I take that and put it there and pull it around and tuck it under, and then i usually do a bobby pin in the back after i've pulled the braid taut again, you can do a wide variety of different hairstyles from like long falls to updos buns. There'S all sorts of stuff, you can do just add a bobby pin there just to make it taut there. This is like some old school drag secrets. I'M showing you right now, like not a lot of queens, would ever give you this. I just like you guys. So much okay, i give y'all so much other queens will be like girl. What are you doing? Okay now, just brush a little bit to clean it up all right, just readjust a little bit there you are. I am doing this also with just a monitor and not a mirror. So let me just see how i look yeah. She needs to get brushed a little more all right. Let me just gussy up a little bit and i'll be right back with the final finals. Okay, all right welcome back. This is the final final result. Okay, i have my hair all pinned on and i am obsessed yes, i live for these really easy, just pop-on hairstyles, okay and it looks so glamorous still it's like minimum effort whatsoever. Okay, like the most you're doing, is just braiding and then styling whatever back piece. You have that you're gon na switch out. You know it's lego, hair. I love it. I hope you guys enjoyed this and you may have learned something or are gon na. Try a different hairstyle that maybe you haven't tried before this is something you've been wanting to do, and now you know how okay you guys now these are like trade secrets, i'm giving you okay industry secrets, because i've actually styled wigs now on full-on productions for television And film, like we've, come a long way. Okay, it is a far cry from that white walls in milwaukee wisconsin at my kitchen table styling a wig for the first time deciding hmm. I should put this on youtube. This is a lot of fun. I really enjoy doing this again like this is a hairstyle. I do all the time. So if i could show you how to do it and you want to try it here, you go it's so much fun to do a tutorial. A few folks i haven't done a tutorial in forever and i got to show off something, i'm very, very proud of our new fashion, doll, wig premium wig from james mansfield beauty, i'm really proud of it. Astro Gallus: Yes! That looks fantastic. A base wig is an essential tool. I love that you are sharing these old drag secrets. I have used base wigs for decades. A good rule of thumb..."Every drag queen needs at least one!" For a hard front wig, we just worked bangs/fringe or a rooted hairline. I have a wonderful painting of my aunt from 1967 with her platinum blonde hair pulled up with a braided chignon hair piece on top that is so much like this. And that hairline on this wig looks really fantastic on you. I have loved watching your work with wigs. The work you have been doing for Trixie looks fantastic. Varla Jean and Bianca have made careers of using base wigs like this. Something every new drag queen needs to learn and master! Cheers and thanks for your entertaining videos, Jaymes!
