Adding Vintage Charm With Doilies And Lace | Air Dry Clay Trinket Dishes | Doily Pillow Pocket

Today, I’m sharing several easy, sweet and shabby chic projects using doilies and lace! There’s nothing quite like them when it comes to adding vintage charm to your crafting projects.

~ First, we will use a small doily and Elmer’s glue with water to create a little bowl or basket. I used a rubber band to secure it to a Oui yogurt jar and let it dry. Then I stitched ribbon all along the edge so it would retain its cute little shape. Adorable!

~ Next, we will take a doily and DAS clay to create beautifully embellished dishes, just perfect for holding your jewelry. I love the texture the doily adds to the clay. So vintage looking!

~ Now I’m using a pillow I had on hand and stitching a doily across the front to form the sweetest little pocket! Next, we add lace, hand-stamped ribbon, and fringed trim. Finally, I show you how to make rolled roses and a tassel using the hem of an old drop cloth and flour sack cloth. So shabby chic!

~ For our last project, I’m using flour sack cloth, lace, and beaded trim to add vintage charm to a nightlight shade. It’s the perfect touch to my guest bathroom!

Happy Crafting and Be Blessed sweet friends!

#kindashabby #shabbychic #lace #diy #airdryclay

Hello, my sweet friends and welcome to kinda shabby. My name is becky and i am so glad you've stopped by today. I have several sweet and shabby projects to share with you and we're going to be using doilies and lace. Now, anytime, hobby lobby has their lace on sale. I always try and pick up a yard or two of my favorites and when i am out thrifting, if i see a doily for a good deal, it is coming home with me. So go ahead and gather up a few of your own supplies and let's get these projects started. We'Re going to be using this little cutie right here to make a bowl and to do that, we're going to take a wee, yogurt container and we're going to invert. It you'll also need a rubber band and we're using elmer's glue and water, and i started with three tablespoons of each so three tablespoons of water and three tablespoons of the elmer's glue, and now that it is a nice smooth consistency. We'Re going to take our little doily and we are going to totally immerse that into that glue and water, making sure that the doily is totally saturated with the mixture we're going to remove some of that excess. We need that glue to keep it together, but we don't want it totally dripping and now i'm going to lay it over my little wee, yogurt container here and just center that up and now i'm going to take my rubber band and place that over the top And i want to pull and form like a little ruffle with the edges of my doily and that's centered on my yogurt container, and this looks pretty consistent all around on all of the edges. So i'm just going to take it and set it back inside here and we're just going to let it dry overnight for this project we're going to be using air dry clay and our doily to give us a beautiful, embossed design. So i'm going to start with a handful here and just begin to knead and work that to make it a little more pliable and use my palms to flatten it out now i'll. Take my rolling pin and use it to continue to flatten and smooth the surface, and i want to use this section right here for the embossing, and it took me about 10 minutes to roll this out to the thickness that i needed and also to fit the Area of the doily that i wanted to use as well. So now i'm going to line my doily up in there take my rolling, pin and begin to roll it over into the clay it's kind of hard to see on camera. But you want the surface of your clay and the surface of your doily to be even with each other and as you're doing it. You can see the clay literally come up between each of those stitched areas and that's what you want so now we are going to gently pull away our doily, and that reveals our design. How beautiful is that i love it and the edges are all uneven. So i'm just going to take a bowl and lay that over the top just to trace around and kind of clean that up a little bit. This is a little tracing tool that i have that i'm just going to use that to go around the outside, but you could use a plastic knife. You could use a safety pin. You could use the edge of a paper clip whatever you have that's going to help you to trim the excess from your design is going to be just fine and i'm going to add a little bit of water to this and put this back in my bag. So i can reuse this clay, i'm just going to take my fingers and smooth out any rough edges here. I'M just going to remove it from my silicone mat here as best i can, and i'm going to place it inside this bowl and we're going to let this dry overnight as well. I went back and lined this bowl with some plastic wrap. I do not want to take the chance that this thing is going to dry to my bowl. So now we're just going to set this aside and let it dry. So i've turned my bowl over this way to dry and when i did, it just looks so thin and it feels so very fragile and it kind of looks a little bit like a taco shell to me. So i rolled out another one that is a little thicker and it is also much smaller and i think that this one is going to be really really cute. But in the meantime, as these are drying, we're going to go ahead and apply some ribbon to this little cutie because he did turn out really really cute. I'M going to go ahead and remove the rubber band and carefully remove this from my little jar here. Isn'T that cute? I love that and to retain the shape, i'm just going to take some really cute ribbon and a large plastic yarn needle, and i'm just going to stitch that in this area here. So my ball ends up holding together and where you make your stitches will obviously depend on what type of a crocheted item you have used. But that's what we've got so far and that's what i'm going to do all the way around my little basket here. So after i stitched it all through there, i just tied a little knot, and that is just so cute and that way it's going to help it to retain its shape. And it's not going to stretch out over time as i put florals or whatever i want in there, and i just think that turned out so cute, so both of our bowls are now dry. I just love that pattern on the inside. If i make more of these i'll definitely make them smaller and thicker, because this size is just much more pleasing to me. So i'm going to go ahead and give them both a coat of paint. This larger one will be getting the waverly in the color plaster and then the smaller ones, getting the rust-oleum chalked in linen white and i'm just going to start with the bottom. So my final coat will be the top to smooth everything out, not a whole. Lot of difference as far as color goes, but the paint is kind of going in and filling in some of those imperfections in the clay and because this clay is really porous. It is not going to take this paint long to dry at all and we're going to go back and paint the inside of each of our bowls as well. I really like how these look painted and now to highlight the details. I started doing this and realized. I didn't have my camera turned on, but i am taking the color cashew and just coming back with a dry brush very gently rubbing it across the highlights there, and you can see that it just highlights all of the details that the doily has left in the Clay and i'm going to go ahead and highlight this one in the same fashion, just dipping my brush into the paint rubbing it off on a paper towel until it's nearly dry and then just gently dragging it over the raised details. I, like that nice little aged vintage, look that it gives to it, and i've got a very nice fine tipped brush here and i'm going to use my folk art in pure gold and just go around the rim here, and i've put this on my little turntable Here, it's just so much easier for me if i just start it and go along the edges like this, i like that and of course you wouldn't have to paint yours if you didn't want to, you, could just leave the color of the clay as it is, But i think adding that little bit of gold on the edge really makes that adorable. Well, let's go ahead and move on to our next project. I purchased this doily at one of my local thrift stores and i thought it would be perfect as a pocket on this plain pillow. So i'm going to pin that in place and then use some heavy duty thread to actually hand stitch that on on three sides, and that looks straight to me. I even put a pin at the top just to keep everything steady and in place there, and now i'm going to just stitch and do an overhand stitch on this area. Here all the way down and back up the other side and i'm going to leave this open, so that kind of looks a little bit like a ruffle. I'M really pleased with how my little pocket looks on my pillow. I have taken some ribbon and put it through a large yarn needle and i'm just going to stitch on all four sides. Just to make sure that my pocket here isn't going to stretch out when i add things to it and i'm just going to go in and out of all of these little stitches here and once i get all the way around. It'S going to reinforce these edges here, so nothing stretches when i'm using it, and now i've got some more little pretties here we're going to do a little bit more embellishing. I really love this lace here and i'm going to be gluing that across the top of my pocket, but to make sure that i don't glue it onto my pillow. I'M just going to take a piece of card stock and tuck that inside and then i'll just be using regular hot glue to glue that across the top. Then i'll put my hand up underneath there and make sure that those edges are stuck together in one of my previous videos. I don't even remember which video it was, but i made this ribbon out of cotton muslin fabric. Oh, it is storming out there. I don't know if you can hear that, and i just took some black ink and pretty stamps to embellish this, and i think that this is going to be pretty on my pillow as well. I'M going to tuck it up underneath there put in my cardstock. So i don't glue it to my pillow and then i'm going to take my hot glue and glue that in place over the top of that as well. I think that is going to be so pretty. I, like it and again just tuck my hand up underneath there and squeeze it, making sure that it has good adhesion all along that edge and, of course, in shabby chic more is more so we've got more we're going to add. I save all my scraps and this little piece of fringed trim here is going to be the perfect size to glue along the bottom, just like that, how cute, and because i'm gluing it to the actual ribbon itself. I don't have to worry about gluing it to the pillow, so i'm not going to need my cardstock for this step, and now we've got one more step, we're going to make some little rolled roses to put up here and then we'll be finished. I'Ve made these rolled flowers before i make them pretty often actually because they're a lot of fun to make. I like to just take some of my paper here and start with a circle. This is a two and a half inch circle and then i'm going to be using a hem of an old drop cloth and also hem from some flower sack cloth and i'm just going to roll the middle in just a little bit. Add some glue and roll. It over on itself just to get it started, and then i'm going to glue that to the middle of my backer here so now that that is glued in the middle. I'M just going to twist this away from myself and roll it and then glue it. On occasion, so you don't need a whole lot of glue because it pretty much will stick to itself, so i'm just going to keep twisting and gluing all around now. Once i get to the outside of my paper, i am actually going to be gluing it to the fabric itself, but just twisting and turning makes the cutest little rolled roses. So i'm just going to finish this off and then we'll come back and use our flower sack cloth. So there's our flower look, how cute that is, and i just glued the end of it to the back right there and then we're going to use our flower sack strips to make a shabby tassel for that, and that is going to just look so pretty on Our pillow i'm going to be gluing this on, so i'm making this one a little differently and i'm cutting them various lengths, but almost the same size, and i'm just going to take my strips and glue them individually to the back here and now. I'M going to take a strip of one of my scraps here and i'm going to glue down this edge over here and then this edge over here. So we've got a little loop and now that i've got a little loop right there, i'm going to take my safety pin and run that up through there. So then i can pin this onto my pillow and that makes it removable and i think it needs a little bling right there. I really like that. I think it turned out really cute. Well, let's go ahead and move on to our last project, so i've got this little night light to go in my hall bathroom, but it is going to need a little bit of shabby chic charm that only some lace can add. So let's go ahead and get our last project going, and this piece that came on my little lampshade is actually my template. If you don't have a template, you can easily make your own just place. Your lampshade on your piece of cardstock and you're, going to outline lay it down, trace those edges and trace this side as well, and then you've got a nice little handy dandy template for you to use to decorate your own lampshade, i'm going to be using a Flower sack cloth, i'm going to take my template and lay it down on my fabric and i'm going to trace and just leave a little seam allowance all the way around. That leaves me plenty of fabric, so i don't cut this too small, so i've got it traced out and i'm going to cut it out. My shade already has adhesive, but you could use mod podge or elmer's glue, whatever you have on here, i'm gon na lining it up rubbing it down making sure i've got good adhesion and the adhesive is only on the front of this. So i am going to have to use hot glue to wrap around and make sure that these edges stay down. So i think this lace and this little beaded trim would be cute on there and of course, maybe some pom-poms, i'm not sure. Yet. I really like this lace, but it's just a little too tall, so i think i'm just going to cut it in half right along this line right here and just see if that's going to work better for me, i think i actually want to put that piece On this way, and then if i turn this piece like that, it all fits on there and looks really really cute and again, i'm going to start in the middle and just do just little tiny dots to just tack it down. I don't need to cover the whole surface with glue. I really like how that is looking so far. I think that is just so pretty and i'll glue those in right there, and i just love this beautiful little beaded trim here and i think that's going to be the perfect touch to just finish off the edge right here and also above our beaded trim right. There, my goodness, that is as beautiful as a wedding gown. I think that is so pretty that is going to be so cute in my little guest bathroom now. All i need to do is get everything styled up and show you how cute all of this week's projects turned out. So these are photos from a mother-daughter banquet held at my church over 40 years ago, and i love how they look in my pillow. This is me in all my teenage middle school awkwardness, and this is my beautiful precious mama. I miss her every day. Thank you so much for joining me today. I truly appreciate you watching. Let me know in the comments what your favorite project was. Mine was the pillow, please remember to subscribe for more kind of shabby, but always chic crafty inspirations and until next time my sweet friends be blessed.

Susan Williams: Like the others have said below, welcome back. I was so happy to see your video this morning. And as usual your projects are stunning. ♥️ That pillow is my favorite too. And your embellishments on the night light are beautiful too. I look forward to the next video. Have a great weekend Becky.

Valerie S: Welcome Back sweet Becky! I missed you! Love this vid. Everything was just gorgeous as always. My fave is the pillow, too, but I also just love that adorable lampshade night light! Everything you created with the doilies came out so beautiful! I miss my mom, too. It's been 10 yrs now and I miss her every single day. It was soooo good to see you craft again! Thank you, and may God bless you and your family abundantly.

Vickie Allen: Becky, So glad you’re back!!! All of your projects were beautiful but I think the pillow was also my favorite. The clay trinket trays were a close 2nd. Have an Amazing week.

Sandra malbrough: I just love watching you create your projects. They always turn out so beautiful and I learn something new each time.. and I’ve been crafting a very long time. I learned how to used the small doilies around the jar from my mother, but she used “starch”and the doilies/scarfs were very stiff. Using the doilies on the clay “fantastic”. The pocket on the pillow OML, “ outstanding” idea. But that night light had to be my favorite. It looks so vintage and shabby. Please post the exact name of the night light. I tried doing a search but came up empty handed. Thanks for sharing your talents. You’re such a pleasure to listen to and watch.

Shelia Berry: Becky, such a delight for me as I turned on my computer and there YOU were! As always, I enjoyed watching you create more cute home decor items. I liked them all, but my favorite was your little plug-in light for your guest bathroom - sooo CUTE! My guest bedroom is white with touches of pink. My lamp in there needs a "makeover"- more "frilly/girly". Thanks to you - now I have my next project to do! God Bless

Debra Mcadams: Loved this video! During my lifetime I've spent many hours crocheting these types of doilies, thank you for not cutting or destroying these.

Blossom Your Creativity: Hi Becky, so happy to see your new video. All of your creations were amazing. I can’t choose a favorite cause they are are equally great. I will definitely try the clay and doily idea since I do lots of projects with air dry clay for faux foods but now you opened my eyes to home decor. So enjoyed watching as always. See you again soon Debbie & Grandma Sandy ✂️‍♀️

Nancy Channel: Like everyone else has said, I am so happy to have you back. Your ideas with doilies and lace are just perfect for my use. Thank you so much!

S V: All of these are gorgeous can’t wait to try thank you for the inspiration

Mary Heckler: Sooo happy to see you back, Becky! These projects are just precious. I don't know how you come up with so many wonderful ideas. Thanks for sharing your fabulous talent with us!

Pam McKanna: I LOVE the pictures of you and your mother. I went to those mother/daughter banquets with my mom when I was a child, too. Thank you for bringing to mind fond memories- you are so blessed to have such photos…and a lovely mother,of course.

Susan Bergman: Loved your new video. I am a doily collector and it's the first section I head for at an antique shop! Now I have some ideas on what to do with them! All the projects were adorable, but I think my favorite was the pillow, and I can't wait to make one! Thanks for all your inspiration.

Vickie Patterson: My sweet Becky, it's so good to see you again! Your projects are as brilliant as always! I can't get over the nightlight shade! It was as beautiful as a wedding dress! So precious! And your other projects were amazing as well! I remember working with doilies with my grandmother. The starch type concoction to stiffen them. I also remember fun things I did with my great grandmother. We learn so much from our elders. You look like your mom. I see her in your face. I lost my mom 29 years ago and my dad 22 years ago. I miss them so much. ❣️ I'm so glad you're back! I kept looking for your videos but couldn't find any. I just spent the afternoon watching videos and I was about to go in the kitchen and start dinner when this video popped up (2 days late). I was thrilled to see it. I don't know why I didn't see the notification since I'm subscribed and have all notifications on. I've been so busy working on patriotic projects and I've been having so much fun with them. I also watch crafters working on Christmas in July and it has me thinking that I should start since I have so many unfinished projects from last year. I also have lots of materials for fall that I should start on. ☺️ But it's nice to stop and watch someone who is so creative and inspiring! You give us so many great ideas! Now I feel the need to get out my pearls and lace and work on a new project. Thanks for sharing another great video!

TEENASQUARE: I HAVE MISSED YOU! I love everything about you: your sweet voice and demeanor, creativeness, shabby chic ideas, tips, the way you explain things, fabric and color choices, supplies you use, I could go on and on but I don’t want to scare you . Anyway, I hope to see more of you here, I’ve been anxiously awaiting your return. I think my favorite part was the sweet photos of you and your mama. I too miss mine. I’m going to make a pillow pocket similar to yours to put some old photos in as well. Precious little tribute. You have such a genteel way about you that I love. Being from the great state of TN it is adorable !!! Looking forward to your next video.

Martha Burnum: I love doilies and these projects are so adorable! Love them all!

Shirley Malatino: Love them all, but the pillow is fantastic, and I am so glad you are back, I just love all your projects. Thank you.

I love it and how fun is that to create your own nightlight! Thank you for all your sweet DIYs like the bowl, precious! See you next time!!

Debra Pate: A favorite? Ugh it’s too hard! My heart melted when you showed us your mom so I’m choosing the pillow! I do love them ALL

Brenda Mathis: Wow Becky, coming at you from Green cove springs and I absolutely enjoyed the pillow! How beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

Candice Bunch: Love your creativity! I have never had success using the washable glue. I have only had success on fabric with mod Podge or Elmer's Glue All. I love the way yours turned out. I was thinking you may be able to make your larger bowl a little sturdier by decoupage tissue paper to the back side or actually toilet paper. The fibers would give it almost like a paper mache structure to add some stability. Just a thought. Thank you for sharing and for all the inspiration! Xoxo

Lori Holland: Welcome back Becky! I was on a little vacation, and returned home to see a video waiting for me from you! I was thrilled! Like you, I just adore the pillow, and that sweet night light is a close second! And thank you for sharing the photos of you and your Mom....you look a lot like her! I miss my Mom every day too, and not a day goes by when I don't think of her. Take good care, and look forward to seeing you soon! ❤❤
