I’ve talked about this exact same thing throughout a bunch of my other articles, so sorry for repeating myself if you are a regular reader. However, I felt compelled to write a quick little hair snip about the common misconception about trimming your hair.

Have you ever wondered if trimming your hair makes it grow faster? Check out this quick "hair snip" that explains how it works...

Trimming Your Hair

You tell your hairstylist that you want to grow your hair out. They tell you to come in and get it trimmed regularly. That seems like a contradiction right? Why would you cut your hair if you want it to get longer? On the other hand, people say cutting your hair makes it grow faster. So what is the truth?

The answer is that cutting your hair will not make it grow faster. It will, however, prevent it from getting shorter due to breakage… which kinda makes it seem to grow out faster. Does that make sense?

The best analogy I’ve ever heard of is to picture a frayed rope. If you leave it alone, it will continue to fray higher and higher up the rope, until it eventually breaks. However, if you cut the rope above the fray and burn the ends, it will prevent further damage. Your hair is the same way. If you curb the breakage before it gets worse, your hair will be healthy and won’t get shorter.

The key is to make sure you trim less than your hair grows. On average, hair grows about 1/2 inch per month, so maybe trim 1/4 inch off every 6 weeks.
