Protein Moisture Balance For Wavy Curly Hair -- Protein Edition

***Open for Awesomeness*** So one of the things that really stumped me when starting the Curly Girl Method was learning about the protein moisture balance in my hair. Which products were "moisturizing" and which products acted like a "protein" treatment. So this will be a short series talking all about this tricky subject. We will be breaking down ingredients, getting a little science-y, and sharing my fave products to correct overload.

Who'S ready to talk about protein - hey guys, welcome back to my channel, I'm here with another video and if you are brand new here hi my name's Courtney and I love talking about using the curly girl method to improve your hair health. If you are just starting on this curly girl method exploration, learning about using this curly girl method to improve your hair health, I've got a lot of info here on this channel, so you might want to go ahead and subscribe and click that notification bell, because because I have a lot of info on this channel all about using the curly girl method, especially on fine wavy hair, and for those of you who are here because y'all watched my part, one of my protein moisture balance series and you have been desperately awaiting part two Here we are yay part two go ahead and hit that thumbs up because I'm finally doing part two of this series. So if you did miss the first video go ahead and check out this little video in the I over here talking all about the moisture side of this protein moisture balance equation, go ahead and give a brief summary about what I'm talking about and then we will Talk all about protein, so if you've been doing a little bit of research into the curly girl method, you will have most likely heard of this protein moisture balance thing and what is that? It is essentially the balance of the amount of protein and moisture in your hair. I talked about this in my moisturizer. Really helped me out. First, keep in mind that hair is made up of about 90 % protein and there's fine hair, and there is coarse hair, which hair type do you think is going to require more moisture and more protein. Well, if hair is 90 % protein, inherently the coarser hair texture is going to have more protein to begin with, whereas the finer hair texture is going to have less protein. Theoretically, because fine hair is so thin, it will require more protein to help bulk it up and help it be balanced out, whereas coarse hair already has a lot of protein in it, it will probably require more moisture to help balance it out because it's got protein In it already all right all right, we all on the same page gray, now proteins are kind of controversial. There was a time when I started researching into proteins, and I got scared. A lot of stuff that I was reading was saying that you could easily overdo the protein and that, if you overdid the protein, your hair would snap and break and be brittle and you'd ruin your hair by doing too much protein. So I therefore avoided protein thinking that protein would damage my hair. Not so my friends not so certain proteins actually have the ability to penetrate in underneath into the hair shaft, underneath the cuticle and reconstruct the hair from the inside out lending structure, strength and health. To your hair, so I actually pushed my hair into moisture overload very quickly when I started out doing the curly girl method. Here'S a couple of pictures of the issue, and the reason for that is, is that I was deep conditioning weekly. I wasn't using any protein in my haircare products in my stylers, nothing and because my hair is fine and higher porosity. My hair became very hydrated very quickly too much moisture can actually be a bad thing, causing the hair to swell and crack eventually and become dry and damaged ironic. That too much moisture can damage your hair. I like to think of it as raisin fingers pretty fingers. You know like when you've been in the bathtub too long. How do you know which ingredients in your haircare products are actually a protein because, let's be honest, reading an ingredients label is like learning to read a new Ling which I found it really hard to read. Ingredients labels when I was first started doing the curly girl method, like my brain, just hurt. Well, let me give you a quick little cheat sheet. I like to use the website. Is it CG com? This website is great because this website is great because it will tell you when a product is curly girl approved and when it's not, and it will also tell you what each ingredient is, it will say if it's a humectant if it's a moisturizing alcohol, if it's A protein this helped teach me over time what certain ingredients were now this isn't a perfect website. It is basically just a word database type of website and it doesn't have every single ingredient in haircare programmed into it. It has been known to miss ingredients in the past, so it's not perfect, but it was helpful in teaching me what certain ingredients were. Another thing that was helpful to me were the plethora of lists of what certain ingredients were on. Naturally, curly calm. That website was so helpful to me, but if you are rushing to your bathroom right now and grabbing your products and you are reading through the ingredients label as you're watching this video look for the word. Hydrolyzed hydrolyzed, basically just means chopped up, and it is referring to the fact that a big bulky protein has been chopped into smaller pieces. When a protein is chopped into smaller pieces. It is theoretically made small enough so that it can penetrate into the hair shaft and help reconstruct the hair from the inside out. Another big indicator that it's a protein is that it will say protein. For example, you have hydrolyzed wheat protein hydrolyzed rice protein hydrolyzed soy protein hydrolyzed, silk protein. All of those are different proteins that are similar in the fact that they will help blend structure to your hair and help reconstruct your hair. Another couple of proteins that aren't necessarily like flashing red lights, hydrolyzed proteins, are biotin and both of those also are small enough to penetrate into the hair shaft and help reconstruct it. How many times am I going to say that phrase in this video also, there has been some misconceptions around protein that it's real easy to think that certain ingredients that mimic proteins are actually in fact, proteins where in fact they are not proteins or if an ingredient Contains protein that it is a protein, for example, there have been egg hair masks that DIY hair masks that people make and they feel some really good benefit to the hair when they use egg masks on their hair and they liken it to a protein treatment. Well, they will have some temporary benefits from the protein in the egg on their hair. However, those proteins have not been hydrolyzed, they are not chopped up, so they are just gon na sit on top of the hair shaft lending some temporary benefits to the hair, but they're also not adhering to the hair either they're just sitting on top. So next time you wash your hair all the egg benefits all the eggy protein e benefits are just going to rinse right down the drain. Also, some things that kind of behave like proteins but aren't actually proteins are aloe vera and flaxseed, and sometimes coconut people like in those things too protein products and they think that they are having protein heavy products because their product contains a bunch of aloe or a Bunch of flaxseed - and the fact of the matter is, is that those things while they may mimic protein in the fact that they kind of lend some structure to the hair? Most of those benefits are temporary because again not hydrolyzed not chopped down small enough to penetrate into the hair shaft and help reconstruct it from the inside out. I personally find that my hair loves aloe and loves flaxseed. Now I think, that's because my hair tends to read love protein. I think if your hair hates protein with a burning passion, you may not be able to use pure aloe vera gel as your single styler. I have done that before and it is worked out well for me, but anyway, it's all about figuring out what works for your hair. What works for my hair may not work for your hair, so be intuitive. Listen to your hair feel it touch it check in on it. If you're trying something and it's just not working, stop read your ingredients. Labels re-evaluate and assess your hair's means now. I want to talk about really quickly what my hair looks and feels like when it is over moisturized when there is too much moisture in my hair. I must add more protein to my hair to help balance it out, and I personally find that it is much harder to pull my hair out of moisture overload and get it balanced with protein than it is to correct protein overload, and I believe that is due To the fine nature of my hair, alright, so here's a picture of my hair when it was its worst when it was at its most over moisturized ever you can actually over moisturize your hair to the point that you push it into something called high growth fatigue. I don't think my hair has ever been in full blown hydro fatigue. It just gets over moisturized like this. In this picture, I don't think it's picking up, but I have what I call antenna frizz it all little pieces of hair on top of my head. Are sticking straight up and the kind of wave in the breeze, but it's very strange sort of frizz when I have too much protein in my hair, the frizz kind of like is there, but it's like snarled over and and feels coiled up and like snarly, whereas This is like my hair is just standing on in waving in the breeze. It'S very strange also, my hair is much straighter than normal, with a slight bend at the end, there is no curl, it is much less wavy curly than normally is, and here's the biggest indicator for me that my hair is over moisturized. I will divide my hair into two sections and grab the two pigtails and squeeze it as hard as I can. If my hair feels like damp clammy play-doh - and I washed my hair the day before, and it really should be dry by now. That is a really good indicator that my hair has too much moisture in it, and I am mean to grab some protein. It is really a feel thing for me. It is not doing the stretch test. Some people are able to do something called the stretch test and it is very effective for them that has never worked for me, because my hair doesn't read an accurate result. I also want to talk just a little bit more about high growth fatigue. Hybrid fatigue is so tricky because your hair, when it is in full blown high growth fatigue, will loose its curl pattern really really quickly, but it will feel really really dry and it will be incredibly frizzy and because your hair feels frizzy and dry. Your knee-jerk reaction is going to be. I need more moisture because my hair is dry and when you get in the shower - and you start applying your deep conditioner or your conditioning, moisturizing products to your hair, your hair will almost feel gummy when you're in Heikal fatigue. Your hair will stretch and stretch and stretch and stretch and stretch and then break it's kind of a scary thing, because your hair is incredibly fragile when it's in hydro fatigue. This is DEFCON. 20. You'Ve got to do a protein treatment right now. I actually have a friend on the curly girl Instagram. You should totally check out my Instagram. I share some exclusive tips and tricks over there if you're interested but go ahead and check out the description down below. I will have a link to my friend who really struggled with heiko fatigue, and you can read more about her story on there. That is not something I have experienced, but it's something that she has and she was able to correct the issue. Okay back to how I correct over moisturized hair. For me, I've just grabbed my hair. It feels gummy I'm having the wavy antenna, frizz and my curls are really straight with the slight Bend at the end. What do I do? What products do I reach for? Let me set them up for you really quick all right. I know this is a lot of products here. Caveat, do not use an entire protein heavy wash day, lineup the first time you're introducing protein into your hair. That'S a recipe for disaster, go slow. Slowly, add more and more protein to your hair, slowly balance it out. So all of these products, I'm about to mention, is an entire wash day lineup in which each product contains protein. I don't recommend doing an entire wash day using all of these products, because that would be too much. But if you want protein in your shampoo and your conditioner or you're leaving or your mousse or your gel, that that's what we're going for here anyway. Alright, starting off the bounce curl clarifying shampoo, I really love this shampoo. It is very, very concentrated. I don't find it to be super stripping and clarifying. In fact, the founder of Bounce curl actually uses this every single day. She washes her hair and I find to that. I can use this multiple days in a row and it will not dry out my hair you're, not leaving it on your hair for very long, but there's protein in here, and it helps also this product contains some extracts, and that is something I forgot to talk About earlier again with protein, mimickers extracts are not proteins in and of themselves, but they do mimic protein, and if your hair is incredibly protein, sensitive keep an eye out for extracts. Even if there's not something that says hydrolyzed in your product, if it's full of extracts. Those have been known to act like proteins, really really nice product. Next up, I'm going to talk about two different conditioners. First off my Giovanni smooth as silk conditioner y'all can see how much I love this. I totally need to do an empties video except I accidentally keep throwing away my empty bottles and all saving them huh, but this contains hydrolyzed silk protein. It is not way up there on the ingredients list. The higher up, something is on the ingredients list. The more concentrated it is in the product, so it does contain hydrolyzed soy protein, it's not incredibly reconstructive or protein II. For my hair, this is more of a balancing type of product. This is a pretty balanced product for me, meaning that it contains a good amount of moisturizing ingredients as well as that protein in it. So it won't allow my hair to become completely over moisturized. It just helps keep my hair balanced. I also really enjoy this as a co-wash. It is awesome. I don't co wash very often, but when I do, this is a product that I really enjoy reaching for another conditioner with really that has some protein that I just love this conditioner is. This conditioner has the most slip of any conditioner in my cabinet of shame that has all haircare products the protein that is in this conditioner is hydrolyzed oats. This also contains other moisturizing ingredients, so I find that this conditioner keeps my hair balanced versus being super heavy protein treatment. It just keeps me from being over moisturized. This is another really good product. Moving on to leave-in, I really love the curls blueberry bliss leave-in. This product bTW, I believe, is a fantastic starter product. If you were wanting to begin to introduce protein into your wash day routine, it does contain hydrolyzed quinoa and some silk amino acids pause. I forgot to mention amino acids earlier. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Now, if you see some amino acids in your products, then dink. That'S a protein. However, amino acids are so small that they don't have the power to reconstruct the hair. They do, however, have the ability to kind of minimize some damage they basically just attach to the outside of the tear in your hair and keep it from spreading, but they don't reconstruct very well. I find that products that contain amino acids make my hair feel so. Silky and that's because it's helping repair micro, tears or tiny little places that are damaged in my hair, but it won't reconstruct and lend structure. People who are incredibly protein sensitive have been able to use products that contain amino acids without their hair reacting. So there you go hydrolyzed quinoa and some amino acids, but those are further down on the ingredients list and and the first half of the ingredients list is mostly hydrating products. So this is a great protein starter product. Moving on to gel the bounce curl light cream gel is very protein II. This is something that I reach for when my hair is really over moisturized. This will help balance me out very quickly. It'S got hydrolyzed wheat protein hydrolyzed oak protein. That'S another thing. I forgot to mention I find products that contain multiple types of protein to have stronger protein benefits than products that just contain one type of protein, so this product containing two different types of hydrolyzed protein. It'S really reconstructive. It'S gon na help, my hair when it's over moisturized, I do have to be careful with this product because it has caused flash drying in my hair. I will be doing a video on that soon, but when I apply this to my hair, if I grab too much as soon as I squeeze it into my hair, I will feel buckets of water just pouring out of my hair and all my curl clumps shatter And break up it's crazy. I have heard some people say that they think that the combination of glycerin and lots of protein is what caused that. But anyway, when I use the correct amount of this very concentrated product, my hair really really does enjoy it. I do find that it doesn't have all the hold for me. I need typically to pair this with a stronger hold product, but when my hair is meeting protein, especially a protein that is left on my hair, because in my mind, if it's left on my hair, it's gon na have more benefit to my hair versus products that I rinse out completely if my hair is needing protein. I will use this, but if I need some more hold a really strong hold product, is the bio silk rock-hard Julie? Let me blind you with the bottle. There are two formulas of this: gel one contains a drying alcohol, so be a conscious consumer and oh look at the back of your model when you pick it up in the grocery store and make sure that it does not contain drying. Alcohol is like the first. Second third ingredient: I picked up the formulation that has water, PvP, acrylate, speculates and then hydrolyzed Silkk. My hair really likes the hydrolyzed. Silkk biosilk tends to use hydrolyzed Silkk in a lot of their products and yeah. This product is amazing in the fact that it has tons and tons of hold. It is a little bit tricky to work with it's a little thick it. You really do have to warm it up in your hands for a good amount of time and apply it on soaking wet hair. This is not a product that you would necessarily apply to damp hair because water is this products friend another product that contains protein. That is near and dear to my heart is the inner sense. I create lift foam if I'm wanting some protein in my phone. This is the foam I reach, for. I really do enjoy this product. It contains hydrolyzed rice protein. It gives my hair a little bit of grit, which I actually really like, because my hair is very fine and a little bit of grit can be a good thing. Now. Here comes a very important tidbit. If your hair, it is really really wildly over moisturised you're. In hiker fatigue, you need a protein treatment. All of these things that I am talking about do contain protein, but they are not clinically certified to save your hair from being over moisturized when it's a protein treatment. It contains a big bulky, strong protein in the first five of the ingredients on the ingredients label. This right here is a protein treatment. It is the curl junkie repair me reconstructive, hair treatment. It contains water, sátiro, alcohol, a hegemony of methyl sulfate and hydrolyzed keratin, sunflower seed, oil, panthenol keratin amino acids, hydrolyzed yeast. It'S got three different types of protein in here, and the first one is definitely in the first five ingredients in the ingredients list, making it a protein treatment. This is reconstructive. This is something that I have leaned on so so heavily to help my hair, when it's over moisturized to pull it back from the brink of despair and rebalance it out. However, really strong protein treatments have been known to dry out the hair and cause that breakage that people talked about that scared me off of using protein. When I first started out this protein treatment does not completely dry out my hair and make it unmanageable. I find that I am still able to finger detangle when I use this protein treatment it. I don't find the desperate, desperate need to follow this up with a deep conditioning treatment. This is a deep conditioner and a protein treatment all-in-one. For me. Also, this product is not dirt cheap, it's a little spin v, but I have had it for the for over a year and I have only gotten down to there. I'M almost out I made more. I will be repurchasing very soon. I have shared this with friends and family and yeah it lasts a long time. It is worth the investment it works, really really well. The last product I'm going to talk about is neutral protein filler. This is a really cool product. It is mostly used by hairdressers for color insurance. It'S used after highlighting the hair to help reconstruct the hair after its highlighted, but it contains water. Then hydrolyzed, keratin, hydrolyzed wheat, protein keratin amino acids like Bo the in the top five ingredients. There are three proteins. So this is strong. I use anywhere from five to ten drops on my hair, I like to mix it in with a leave-in and use that on my hair, this product is tricky. People have used too much of this product in the past and definitely put too much protein on their hair. This is something I save for times when my hair is wildly over moisturized. This is not something I can use daily safely, but it's another option for inserting a lot of protein into your hair care, alright guys that is it for this video. Thank you so so much for watching. If you have any questions, please leave a comment down below. I hope you are having an absolutely fantastic day and I will talk to y'all later bye.

Swavy Curly Courtney: Hey there guys!!! So I did my very best to discuss this incredibly complex concept concisely. Wow! That was hard for me! Lol! Please feel free to share knowledge in the comments section and help each other out! I know that there are things that I missed or just simply couldn't fit in the time frame.

Juanita Singleton: I don’t think I’ll ever understand this protein/moisturizer balance ordeal!

Robin Dever: Super helpful info! I just can’t tell what my hair needs....it would be awesome if you could do a part three explaining in further detail what the symptoms of each side are! Like gummy, brittle, etc. etc. I’m not sure what those terms mean exactly!

Emma Lurye: how often do you recommend using protein infused styling products if you're introducing protein to your hair?

Jamie Sculley: I had a similar experience where I was afraid to use protein at first too! I'd watch videos or read posts and people would warn about using too much. But really that's what my fine hair needed!

araschannel: this was SUPER helpful! My hair is definitely in moisture overload, wondering if it's actually gone to hygral fatigue.. The hairs sticking straight up is me as well, I was so confused when it happened! Going to go grab some protein ASAP ❤️ Thank you

Louise Allen: Such an incredibly helpful video Courtney. Really has helped me realise that my hair is over moisturised, and that is why it is dry, frizzy and candy floss like. All the research you have done is very much appreciated. ⭐️

Rayel Brigham: I feel like I confuse moisture with “being greasy”...could you explain the difference between the two???? Thank you!

The Prioritized Mom: I love how "sciencey" your videos are :) I always learn so much!

seldom seen kid: Hi guys! How do I choose which part of my routine to pick for a protein treatment? Like do I go for a protein low poo, conditioner, deep conditioner or the leave in?

Erin S: This was so helpful. My hair is limp, but seemingly dry. The dryness has me moisturizing, but now I know it can be a sign of too little protein. And I hope some more strength can help the flat parts lift up.

Karissa Thatcher: Hi Courtney! Thank you for doing the hard work of making informative videos! I hate researching this stuff... You're videos make it fun and easy! :D Question: Do gelatin treatments wash out of your hair like egg masks? Would collagen be better to use and would it work the same?

Yvonne Reese: I have learned so much . I am glad I found your channel. I now understand why I have fly aways and bendy curls. I kept thinking I needed more moisture, but I need protein. Now to figure out where to start to balance it out. Thank you!

Fine Curls: Thank you JESUS! You answered my prayers with this video lol I'm currently struggling with protein/moisture balance. My hair tends to get over moisturized easily and doesn't like protein too much.

Ro Dixon: Thanks for the info Courtney- so helpful as always! :) ... I've been following CGM for 7 months now and maintaining the protein balance has been the hardest! I feel like my hair seriously can't get enough- but I'm so cautious with how much I use because I too have read horror stories... guess I might need to loosen the reigns a little.

Alaine Wilson: Thanks for the video! :) Yes, please, a video on flash drying would be fantastic. I get flash drying on my thick coarse 2c hair when I use aloe or coconut.

Eva McClellan: BEST VIDEO EVER!! Sister, everything you said about your hair is exactly what I've experienced/discovered about my hair. I will be recommending this video to every curly/wavy person I know. I also used protein-free products for the first three months of starting CGM and was so frustrated. I was told by a CG on Instagram to try protein. Shazam! What a difference maker. My hair LOVES protein. Today I used Curl Junkie's conditioner with protein and a styler with protein and boom, curls. I also love the Curly Junkie Repair Me protein treatment. I use it about twice a month and my hair loves it. I have to use at least one product with protein each wash because I so easily get over-moisturized. You've explained everything so well. Thank you, thank you!

Kris & Tony Krumanaker: Hi Courtney, my hair also loves protein. I use the aphogee 2 step treatment monthly. Can you compare and contrast aphogee vs the gelatin treatment you use which I will try soon? Thanks!

Kaylee Braddock: Hi Courtney!!! I LOVE your videos! I want you to consider doing one on the best foams/mousses for your fine hair! Your tips have inspired and helped me so much! I love your funny, sweet spirit and that you are a little bit of a science nerd like me

Laura Steenson: Your overmoisturized picture looks like my hair right now! I was starting think I needed protein, which is why I searched out this video and now after watching I am 99% sure that's what's going on. Thank you for sharing this!

Ser: Oh my gosh I did the same. I ended up in moisture overload and it was HORRIBLE. I have discovered my hair really does need protein. Great video!

Jennifer Mason: Hello! Thanks for this video. I’m trying to find a balance right now. I get stringy waves that won’t clump when I use protein. I’m going to try to ease up on the protein instead of trying all the things. One suggestion, when you are mentioning products, can you say the name instead of “this”. I listen to a lot of videos instead of watching because I’m at work. you mentioned a conditioner and I didn’t catch the name and I couldn’t tell what it was on the bottle when you held it up. Love the information you share!

Gloria Oseguera: How do you know when it’s too much protein? With the drama of the deva curl situation, I’ve been doing a lot of research and realized my hair is in Hygral fatigue. I’ve used a protein mask the last two times I’ve washed my hair (since I learned about my hair being in hygral fatigue). I just don’t want to use too much protein but don’t know what point is too much. Help!!!

Tracy: Great info Courtney, especially the info on protein “imposters”. Thank you!

Laurel: So helpful!! Do you think hair being protein starved can actually cause hair loss?

Louisiana Girl: I just did a no product wash day......we have VERY similar hair types, 2B, sometimes 2C texture, high porosity, high density, very fine hair. I did a no product wash day, with a ton of frizz! I washed with giovanni tee tree triple treat shampoo and conditioner, and followed that up with Curls Blueberry Bliss leave in. Let it air dry. It's a hot mess. Any thoughts welcome.

jcwebb264: Based on the hydrolyzed aspect, ramen seasoning would be the highest protein diy treatment

Amy Medeiros: I've been looking forward to this video! :) My hair has mostly seemed to really need protein but it's been awful the past few days and I'm wondering if I've overdone it. I had ordered the shirt you're wearing in this video and it is out for delivery today; yay!!!

Michelle Randall: I am so glad this popped up on my feed today, turns out I am over hydrated, and need proteins! I took the tip to not add protein early in the CG method so I have stayed away. The longer I do CG the longer my hair stays soaking wet after wash day. Hours to dry after diffusing on low/ low for 45 minutes. I think I hit this a bit early only 1 month into CGM, but I have not dyed my hair in 8 years, as well as I maybe used a curling iron once a year and only used a hair"frier" in the winter when I had to. SO really it was just a product and technique changes. I have super fine hair that is very dense, I have the little hairs standing up on end waiving as I type lol. So glad I have something that I can do about it, order some products with protein, and slowly work them into my routine.

imshinycaptain: I think I fell into the same trap of overmoisturizing in the process of trying to avoid protein. This is a great help, though, and I think I caught it before it did too much damage. Hopefully combined with my recent hair chop and not letting myself get overexcited about moisturizing I'll have my curls back soon. XD I did get a sample of the Curlsmith Bond Rehab Salve at my local Ulta and I think that helped, but I want something else I can use more often. Hopefully I don't overcorrect.

Olivest: What do you do if you have a mix of fine and coarse hair throughout? And the fine hairs are wavy and the coarse hairs are distinctly curly. I'm trying to figure out how to use that to my advantage (read: use the structure of the coarse/curly hairs to give the wavy hairs support and lift), but I'm a bit lost about how to do that.

Melanie Bergeron: Really appreciated the deeper explanations of how things work (or don't) beyond just "this is good! this is not good!" :) Thanks

Karissa Seim: so...I'm an anomaly! I have thick, coarse hair and get over moisturized so easily! After much trial and error I think I've finally learned that one gelatin treatment a month, plus 6 drops of neutral protein filler in my moisturizing conditioner each time I wash my hair is a happy combination! Sometimes I use a gel with protein in it when styling. Thank you for all of your research and videos! It has helped me so much on this crazy journey!

Brooke Worthington: Any possibility you could do a video on seborrheic dermatitis? I remember you saying in one of your videos (yes I watch them and love them all) that your sister has it. Wondering what to she does for it and how she manages it. Thank you for another lovely video!! Best curlytuber out there!!❤️

CrisT: Yeay, I am so excited to see part 2 . Part 1 was awesome, congrats !

Mrslewis611: I loved this video! So helpful. Thanks, Courtney!

BeautyWearsBoots: I over-courtneyed! The other day when I saw your damp styling video I grabbed my biosilk gel, and things did NOT work well. I was able to fix it by refreshing though! I wet my hair down with a mister bottle and added a couple pumps of cantu's wave whip to each section. That stuff made my hair clump up so nicely, and makes my hair really shiney too

Yeezy yeezy wus good: I LOVE YOUUUUU❤️❤️❤️ this vid was sooo helpful I am definitely over moisturizing my hair Brb going to buy some protein stylers rn!! Seriously God bless you thank you so much for these infos

Dominique573 N: I have started the cgm 3 weeks ago, I have very fine thin hair. I thought I needed a lot of moisturizing products and now it’s over moisturized. I have those sad curls and antenna frizz. I just ordered some protein products what do you recommend I do with them? Should I apply the for 30 mins? I also got the mop top conditioner, custard blueberry bliss leave in and bounce curl clarifying shampoo.

Sarah Michie: Hi Courtney! I've been experimenting and I'm really keen to buy a protein treatment, but the Curl Junkie Repair Me! treatment is £50 here in the UK - do you have any recommended alternatives? :)

ImNewPJ: @Swavy Curly Courtney I LOVE ❤️ all the help you provide us CGs, you’re such a blessing! Gorgeous Hair! I was wondering if you could either tell us the name of the product you’re holding up or hold it closer to the camera, I’m trying to read the label and all I can see is a white glare... so sorry . I’ll try and figure it out from your info below the video. You’re so good to do this for us, thank you so much. God bless you abundantly . Oh...p.s. what is “slip ”?

Julia sonne: Courtney, thank you for this video! The informations are so helpful ♡ Greetings from Germany :-)

Dominique573 N: I could really use some advice/help with this cgm. Thank you all of a sudden my hair stopped curling this is my 3rd week into the cgm. I had been using moisturizing products, is it moisture overload? My hair was pretty healthy starting in I hardly ever used stylers and did highlights over a year ago. Got a big chop right before starting took about 12 inches off my hair. I don’t know why it isnt curling anymore. Eventhough im using the same amount of product and have tried different gels. I use Uncle funky, mop top custard or orange marmalade as curl enhancers and then top it off with a strong holding gel.

Faye Berman: G-D bless you! I’m having this issue now. My hair is super soft, but does not hold a curl for nothing. I have been CGM for years! Think it’s time to try a protein masque.

Lab Lab: Oh my goodness, I, too, was researching protein and got scared. I've been avoiding it. May have to try using it.

Diana Baz: Biotin is not a protein. It is a vitamin, known to enhance hair growth, but also it might turn out it enhances growth of unwanted tissue like fibroids. Not enough studies on this yet.

Nithya J: Ahh THIS is why I miss Shea Moisture so much... my hair loved the powerful protein punch it packed! Giovanni is my next brand to try to replace

Katie Turza: I'm fairly new to curly girl and have NO clue if my frizz is lack of moisture or protein. It's also winter in Maine so everything is DRYYYY up here. Does environment affect what your hair needs?

AllonsY !: Hi! I have very fine hair, but it hates protein. Even products with protein very low on the ingredient list would make it brittle and stringy instantly. So, I've avoided protein this whole past year (just had my curlversary). However, lately, I'm thinking my hair is overmoisturized. I'd like to add a rinse out product (such as cowash or conditioner)--that way the protein isn't sitting on it for several days before the next wash--just in case. lol However, while I've found some that might work, they all contain glycerin pretty high on the list. Here's the deal. No one talks about this, so I don't know if it's simply unfounded or just me. This may appeal to your science-y side. Glycerin is a solvent. In and of itself, this isn't necessarily a problem. It becomes a problem for those of us who use demi and semi permanent hair color. The glycerin "lifts" (fades) the color much faster. I found an article on naturally curly that suggests this too, but no one else talks about this potential downside to glycerin. My color does fade (even in one wash) when glycerin is high on the ingredient list. I use a demi permanent, so it should last longer than a semi, but it still fades with glycerin. I don't suppose you'd like to do some research on this? LOL When I use totally glycerin free products, my color lasts so much longer. So, how do I find a rinse out product with some protein that won't fry my hair AND has very little or NO glyxerin? To make matters more difficult, I only use cruelty free products. I thought the Neutral Protein Filler would be perfect because I could add as little as I want to my own products...but can't find information on whether it's cruelty free or not. *sigh* Love your channel! If you'd like to delve into the murky underside of glycerin that has nothing to do with dew points, I'd be grateful. Have a fabulous day!

NessArt: thank you so much. I couldn't figure out why my hair is struggling so much and kept moisturizing it. I had no idea about proteins but I can tell I need it!

BAsh90: Two or so years ago my hair was brittle, dry, falling out, never felt shiny or soft. At the time, I determined I was in protein overload and eliminated ANY and ALL products containing protein. I fell into a habit of using certain products, most of which happened to be protein-free. What I didn't understand was, at that same time, I was trying to avoid shampoo and I was co-washing like crazy and using a lot of moisturizing treatments. In retrospect, my hair was suffering because of silicone and product buildup, lack of clarifying, possibly even hygral fatigue... it was NOT suffering because it was protein-overloaded. I have been so kind to my hair over the last several months. I buy quality products, use a silk pillowcase, get regular trims, and avoid heat styling as much as I can. I finally got into the habit of clarifying regularly, alternating cowash with JessiCurl low-poo shampoo, laying off the silicones.. and my hair feels better, but I am still having breakage on my top layers, and some days my hair feels dry, frizzy, straight and puffy, and impossible. Finally tried the Neutral-Protein Filler (about 10-15 drops) mixed into a deep conditioner two days in a row and oh my goodness... my hair feels so much better and my waves have bounced back a little bit, and the frizz on that top layer is much more controlled. I can actually run my fingers through my hair without hearing a little "snap" as I break my hair off. I will use this cautiously, but also added a few drops to what's left of my Blueberry Bliss deep conditioner and plan to use that once a week as a treatment until I feel okay to back off a little bit. I can't believe I have been denying my hair of protein all this time, and that I actually thought I was doing a good thing for my hair :( Excited to keep learning more tips and tricks!! Thank you for all you do!

Jenni Schaffer: Courtney, I recently bought from Whole Foods a new product to me: Alafia Repair & Restore Curl Defining Cream Gel with Baobab & Argan. I'd love to see how it would do on your hair. Seems to me I get soft ringlets from this stuff! Thanks!

palanoolho: How long it will take for hair to recover from over moisturization ?

Mary Marshall: Thank you for all the information. When are you going to give the recipe for your homemade gel or did I miss it?

Stacey Ackerson: I just discovered these videos and Im loving them!!!

Umm Ali's Happy Home: I honestly have no clue if Im moisturizing more than needed. My hair is very healthy thankfully and Im not recovering from heat damage or treatments/color. But I have started to introduce weekly deep conditioning, but i do use some products that have protein like blueberry bliss and a couple of my gels or creams. My hair seems to love cowashing although this last one did make a bit of my wave fall out despite it having a protein in the cowash. My hair just feels mad soft LOL I think sometimes we can overthink these things when we start out and we can make ourselves feel a bit nuts.

Xana K.: Not sure that's a fact for everyone because I have fine hair, but I'm protein sensitive too. My hair needs more moisture than protein, it goes really horrible when I use protein :(

tgif1207: Soooo much great information!!! Haha...cabinet of shame! We all have one, right!! Thank you, Courtney!

Sabiha Umar: Are there any products that have a combination of moisture and protein? So that we don’t have to diagnose ourselves. I am new to the journey and finding it difficult to figure out what the hair needs.

Alexa: What about clarifying as to help correct or just avoiding what you have to much of in your hair to begin with instead of jumping from one extreme to the other?

SueRosalie: True about putting egg etc. on your hair. There are limits to home remedies. Yay for science that we can make products with protein that can penetrate the hair.

chiara d: Thank you for your always clear info video. BC Cream Gel causes flash drying to me as well, I don't know why (maybe aloe?)

C.: Is there any differenece for Proteinetreatments if you have high or low porosity hair?

Zheng Xian: Is there any way you could have a session focusing on moisture/ products that are hydrating without much protein? I have low porosity hair and it’s hard to find a good product recommendation.

Anya Rendahl: would you recommend the shea moisture manuka honey and yogurt line for transitioning wavy hair?

Jessica Mcguiggan: these videos help so much I am just starting out I don't know if my hair is really damaged like you said the halo frizz and just really dry and frizzy it seems like. the curly and waves are there but I am trying to figure out what works best. I just ordered the blubbery bliss to see if I need more protein I also heard that if you hair is colored blonde you might need more protein correct me if I am wrong! I love you hair and videos just trying to figure out how to start my curly hair journey!

Noci (skilltes037): My hair is so soft ... Just realized that all my masks are protein free...I didn't realize. I thought my curl charisma had protein

maya tarek: I mad a protein test and I figured out that my hair needs both moisture and protein the question is Do I have to balance between them?

Gloria Oseguera: I think I’m in hygral fatigue. I don’t know where to start! A friend recommended protein and I’ve started using a protein mask the last couple washes. I just don’t know what I’m doing!

Gwendolyn Dodge: Ok, I'm curious about the aloe vera. If aloe vera acts like a protein and my hair hates aloe , flash drying and making it tangled, is that because my hair doesn't like protein? Or is it something else in aloe that my hair doesn't like? I can use flaxseed gels just fine, as well as most leave-in conditioner with hydrolyzed protein (like curls blueberry bliss) but if anything has aloe in it my hair just instantly rejects it, which sucks since so many products these days have aloe in it.

La Gatita: This is where I'm at. I am about to do an aPHogee treatment but do I need to avoid products after that with protein? I have porous wavy hair with some highlights that's just try in it's natural form.

Jasmine Ahmed: IDK but my hair does not react well to aloe vera or rice water rinses . I get better results when I use products with shea butter, argan oil, etc than with coconut. I just started cgm. Protein sensitive or still under moisturized?

tabitha lewis: ugh everyone is all cover your head in coconut oil...then my hair feels like straw. I want to try curly girl method and been watching all your videos. It seems so much difficult to find the right products in Canada.

Chase: I need super protein boosts every few washes. Mill creek biotin or keratin shampoo and conditioner have been fantastic for me. Found them on the bottom shelf at sprouts, hiding! Also b-bliss is the bestest. Use it every wash day

Rebecca Cassanto: I have a combo of very course hair mixed with fine hair which makes it hard to know what it needs. Also, I live in a very dry climate. Is it even possible for my hair to be over moisturized considering that?

Mikaela H: What was the second conditioner you showed? I researched 5 times and can't figure out what product it is

Erika Hall: So I guess I’ve been deep Condition way too much so it made my hair over moisture I have now been adding protein to my hair how long does it take until I get my curl pattern back

SioLazer: does the logic follow what happens with protein from eggs washing out to beer rinses? As someone who has made beer, I refuse to believe there is any more than trace amounts of protein in it anyway. But people are saying this! Can you science this please?

Love and Light: Great information thank you-

Julie Albright: My hair is fine , lo porosity, med density . And my hair loves mosture and hates another of protien..

GamingWithMus: How do I fix protein overload? I'm so scared :( been using a keratin shampoo for over 3 months :( my hair is now at the falling out stage. Really bad :( I didn't know about keratin overload.

tae uhh: my hair hates pure aloe from the plant and coconut oil, my hair might hate protein but I feel like I need it, I honestly don't know what to do

Libby Adler: Gosh! Love your videos. I am new to this and really confused. It seems like a lot of info, anf a lot of trial and error. Silly me, I thought I would find a product line that worked for me and be set! I guess this is a balancing act and requires a developing relationship with your hair. Where do we even begin?

Kelsey Harding: So helpful thank you!! This is random, but do you know ASL?? If not, I think you could pick it up really quickly, you naturally make things VERY visual with your hands lol

Sandra Allen: What is the name of the product you showed between the Giovanni conditioner and the curls blueberry bliss leave in? It had a greenish label but I didn’t catch the name even when listening again.

Marie H: Looks like I'm shopping for a protein treatment.

Tara Patel: Could you suggest an alternative to the Repair Me?

Susan Finn: Someone who says “what” just like me my kids make fun of me!

Sarah Chellew: Doing the lords work your videos are so good

Tara Elmegreen: Great job! You're adorable! Ty for info.?..I'm STILL struggling to get get soft, touchable hold such as what I see on u!! Sad to hear my CHI Silk Infusion probably ISNT what I've needed.... sniff sniff.?..

pale star 8: So what about coconut oil? Is it adding to the protein in your hair or is it mimicking it? I'm still really confused about that. And if it's adding to it, can you use it as protein in your hair??? As a protein treatment? Ahhhhh!!! I'm so confused! Please answer. I'm just getting started on all of this at 35

Asha Vere: How do you make your hair soooo shiny??

Cari Johnson: Would Olaplex do/be the same thing?

fiona: love your channel, but loved it even more after seeing the Bible verse in the banner!

SueRosalie: "cabinet of shame" ahaha I've got one of those too

fishchick72: Is a rice water rinse protein?

Love and Light: Thank you

la hy: There are so many kinds of protein. Does it matter which one I use? How do I know which one I should use?

Lucy O'Byrne: Okay Courtney are you telling my that I have to go out of quarantine and get a protien mask to fix my hydral fatigue and I can not do any at home protein treatment!?

Ashley Kennedy: Can you do a video on ecoslays matcha protein mask
