How To Sculpt Hair In Blender

2021 - 28 September

In this video I'm gonna show you how I sculpt hair in Blender. I use this workflow a lot in my personal works. I hope you can learn something trough the video. I would say that this is definitely not one and only workflow for sculpting hair but it's been working for me pretty well.

Thank you very much to Huion for sending me Pen Display Kamvas 16 and supporting this video. Here's the link for more information about the product:

I made this sculpt of Hinata Uzumaki. As a huge fan of the Naruto series I had to sculpt her, I had to, I couldn't resist. I wanted to bring her in somewhat realistic/fantasy style. I treat this more like a sketch project. Just trying to get an idea out. Sculpting was done in Blender and Zbrush, rendered in Cycles, and final images composited in Photoshop. If you have any feedback don't be hesitate to let me know! Thanks guys!

What'S up everybody, this is yuri 99 here today i want to show you my workflow on how to sculpt hair in blender um, but before i get into the tutorial, i want to say thank you to yuyon for sending me this pen display it's huion compass. 16. I have tested it and it's pretty good, especially for the price that it has it's pretty affordable. If you are looking for a pen display to buy, i can definitely recommend this. I made a small review for it and i'll put that at the end of the video, if you guys are interested okay, so people have asked me how i sculpt hair for my characters. It'S actually pretty simple, workflow and i'll break it down for you. So i'll start with bezier curve and i'm gon na straighten this and next i'll add a circle curve object and i'm going to make it somewhat square with smooth corners. Now i'm going to scale it down and i'm going to use it as the bevel object for the bezier curve. Here, i'm just trying to put it on her head now. I'M just gon na hide her hair for demonstration, and there you go paul tinata over here here, i'm trying to make an interesting shape for the hair. You can subdivide the points by right clicking on the active points. You can scale the radius of the hair by using alt s. You can also adjust the rotation of the radius by adjusting the mean tilt value and then, after that, i'm going to convert it into mesh and next i'm going to add two levels of subdivision surface and then apply it now, it's time to go into sculpt mode. First, i'm just going to smooth it out, because usually it has this weird sharp transition between each point and next i'm going to use the short the the draw sharp brush to block out the details. Sculpting hair like this is pretty relaxing to me. I don't know about you guys, but yeah, it's i i can just put on some music podcasts and just sculpting hair here, i'm just smoothing it out, i'm making the surface less bumpy. Next, i'm gon na use crisp brush with 0.7 for the pinch value and 0.4 for the strength now with the crease brush. Make sure that you change the fall off to sharp, because i believe the default is set to smooth, and here i'm gon na sculpt, the creases for the hair and a hair with style like this is um in the industry. Sometimes we call it ice cream hair and it's used, for example, in the cinematic production workflow. This hair will be used as block out that will be replaced later with actual particle hair. Some stylized movies or games also use the similar style of hair, for example, fortnite, uh, star wars, the clone wars, viewer, the batman, etc. This type of hair is also used in collectibles a lot i'm currently working for a collectibles production studio and we use ice cream hair a lot. The variation of ice cream hair is pretty common, some will have really small creases and some will have pretty big creases, and i think this style of hair is just nice to look at and it's pretty fun to sculpt too so now the example here that i Show you by sculpting the creases by hand is not recommended. If you have a tight deadline, there are other methods to make the creases. For example, you can create the creases in the bevel object itself, but the problem with that is, it will have a contain continuous crease from the root to the tip, and that doesn't look very interesting to me and other way is that my lead artist, uh wanda Corunyawan gave me this hairbrush for zebras. It has uvs in it. So, basically, how to add the creases is by adding some sort of displacement map to it. It'S pretty cool um. If you guys interested, he actually made a video on it and i'll put the link in the description below so here, i'm just gon na add some vertex color just to make it a bit more interesting and next what i like to do is add a plane And then merge them into one vertex and then extrude it a few times and then i'm going to convert it into a curved object and i'm trying to do is create those flyaway hairs. You can use the surface snap feature to help a little bit with the process and again it's a curved object, so it has the same control all as to resize. The radius mean cells for the rotation of the radius, etc, foreign, and so that's kind of about it. Um with my hinata scope here, her hair has this: what's the word um god, why am i blanking um, not pointy hair? I guess uh, and i was basically just you know at the beginning of the demonstration where i just decreased - the radius on the tip of the hair yeah. I just didn't do that for this, and i also use the boolean uh to cut the tip of the hair uh. If you guys want to see this workflow in action, i have a few time lapse. Video that you can watch so you guys can have a better understanding on how to pull it off all together. So yeah, if you guys have any questions, don't be hesitant to ask me and i'll do my best to answer them and yeah see you guys in the next one and take it easy. Everyone key flaw: here's my thoughts on huion campus 16 when it got here, it came with the pen display itself, battery free pen, three in one cable power, adapter pen, holder, pen, nibs pen, nib, clip glove cleaning cloth and the quick start guide. The panel size is 15.6 inch with the native resolution of 1920x1080. It has 8192 levels for the pressure levels. Uh, the pros are the tip of the pen feels satisfying when i'm just making strokes or just clicking stuff. I cannot put it into words but um. Maybe the best way to describe it is it feels natural and the color looks pretty good. I actually use it to watch the sonic movie. I know it's not what it's supposed to be used, but anyway, and the installation is really easy too, and for what it is it's pretty affordable and overall, i think it's pretty good and i can recommend it, but i have some notes. First, the display like the right bottom corner of it. It got pretty warm after a while. I don't know if every band display are doing that, because i don't use paint display a lot. I actually prefer just using regular pens outlet but for detail painting. I love using pen display, but that could just be happen only on the one that i got a second. The the bottom button on the pen has this button to it like a small circle pump that made me uncomfortable honestly, i'm having a hard time poking it, but that could be because i'm used with the wacom pen that i got. Third, when i installed the driver for it, it actually messed up. My wacom configuration and i had to reinstall my wacom driver to fix it that's kind of a bummer but um so yeah, that's about it, uh for more information on the product. I'Ll put the links on the description below um and again see you guys in the next one you

MG Beers: love this walk through of your workflow. I'm using it now and even as a newb blender user i could follow it! :D thank you!

Edgar Allan Yee: I've always wondered how to put a twist in a hair strand & I just learned how to do that by using the Mean Tilt slider in this video so a big thanks!

Brandon Jackson: Hey, dude! As usual - amazing, thanks! Do you have any detailed tutorial or course here/udemy/etc? You so talented and I want to learn more about your blender technique sculpting etc =) Keep it up!

Marco E: Crazy. Like how long does it take to finish the hair in total? To be honest for simplicity I was just thinking of just using the hair particles, but then I am not that sophisticated ;)

Jeremiah Gallo: Thank you so much for these!! May I ask how you keep your PC from lagging with how much details you put on your mesh?

__八\ 己工尺 /八__: Incredible Hinata model! I also really like her hoodie. Generally, I find modelling clothes really interesting, because in contrast to something like skin, there usually are many layers, folds, seams, stiches and knit patterns involved. Could you please make (how about two) tutorials, sharing your cloth modelling techniques? I propose the first tutorial to be about blocking in the overall shape and design (you might have a different workflow for skin-tight and loose clothing). The second tutorial would then be about adding details. You have a big portfolio of characters and do excellent work, to say the least. That's why I would like to see you go through each of them, curtly explaining how you approach different designs and different kinds of details. If you were to make these tutorials at the same level of depth as this hair sculpting tutorial, it would be an unbearable amount of work. However, if you instead opt for a more theoretical, rather than practical manner of teaching, you could cover all your techniques with reasonable expenditure. Personally speaking, I usually don't need a full hands-down walk through process to grasp the concept. Of course, it's still a lot of work on your side. Please let me know your thoughts on my appeal. Clothing is a very multifaceted topic and one where I can still learn so much from you. Should there be anything unclear with my proposal or need for specification, don't hesitate to ask. Have a fantastic day!

Andre: Question please! Is there a workflow where i can easily make a low poly version out of it once im done, to bake the normal map from the high poly ver? tbh im not even sure if i can do that for hair, i wish i can avoid retopologizing it from scratch

عراقية احب العراق: Do an educational course on how to design such characters that you design with high quality, as if they were designed in the Zbrush program and not in the blender

Zoltán Tóth: thx for this ! :) keep up with the good work!

Wolfie71: Keren banget mas. I saw many of my friends shared your work.

zhaf: Since you said you’re working for a company creating figures. I assume you mean physical 3D printed ones. Would love if you can show us some things to think about when making models for 3D printing. I just started out learning and still watching a lot of tutorials for basic stuff. But all of the tutorials I’m watching is gearing towards making functional models for either video or games where they eventually will rig the models to animate them and for example they model the eyes separately to be able to animate it later. But I would guess making models for 3D printing is much different from those models made for video or games.

SUPREME EMPEROR MITTENS: A good example of Wild Hair is Trunda Giltmallet from Raid Shadow Legends. I want to make hair like that :)

Dacosta obeng-asante: nice tutorial thanks , why don't make character sculpting course in blender with udemy, it will work , there are not much course on the subject .

EliteAgxnt: I just started using blender and I have noo idea what keys your pressing to do all of this. Do you have a more in-depth tutorial?

海洋生物学: I wouldn't mind a tutorial on the boolean of the hair and how you model or sculpt clothing and accessories. As these are what I have most trouble with.

Turbow Time: Hey Yudit, My son is 13 and he's interested in being a game dev when he gets older. He spends hours creating multiple Sims in Sims 3. Should I get his Unreal 5 courses or Blender or what so that he can entertain his interest in this field?

Black Swan: when i add the cricle i dont become solid shape like you, it will becomes a ring ? how does this work ? the circle comes as a ring not as a solid shape, how did you made this ? i tried rottae serveral axies but its just a ring ? thanks sir lookign forward to do this hair, please help me Blender 4 ever !
