How To | Cut & Layer Hair Extensions

This is how I cut my super long hair extensions to make them blend in with my short hair. I didn't take off any length, I just layered them so it looks more natural. These extensions also are not the EXACT same color as my hair, so keep that in mind.

I'm also not a professional. This is just how I layer my extensions at home.

If you don't feel 100% comfortable trying this yourself, please go to a salon and have a professional do it for you!

HOW I CLIP IN MY EXTENSIONS

(A more detailed video showing how and why I do this will be coming soon!)

Starting from the bottom up: (Using my Hair Secrets Ultimate Volume Extensions)

3-clip piece

3-clip piece

4-clip piece

2-clip piece and 2-clip piece (on either side of my head, right above my ears)

1-clip piece and 1-clip piece (right above each of the 2 clip pieces)

The back of our heads are somewhat in a V shape. The bottom part of our heads (closest to the nape of our necks) is more narrow than the top. So I use the shorter 3-clip pieces at the bottom. I use the wider 4-clip piece towards the top. Then, I use the 2-clip and 1-clip pieces at the top and towards the front to blend everything in more. It covers up the shorter pieces of my hair towards the front of my head and makes everything look a little more natural.

Hey guys welcome back to my Channel today, I'm going to show you how to cut and layer hair extensions to make them blends in with your real hair. This is super helpful associated. You have really long, hair extensions like I do a natural hair. That'S on the shorter side also like I do, because, obviously, if you have a really super long set of extensions that are all one length that go down to like your waist, then your real hair stops like up here. It'S gon na be pretty obvious and you're gon na be able to see where your hair stops and the extension starts so by cutting and layering them. It makes everything blend a little bit more naturally. So, in order to do this, you're just gon na need three things. Number one obviously is a set of hair, shears and then you're also going to need a brush. It doesn't matter what kind I just happen to have one of these tangled tamer brushes, but any brush or obviously, and then also a hair tie over hair clip something to just hold all of your hair up and please keep in mind I'm not a professional hairstylist. This is just what I've been doing over the years and what I find works and looks best for me. So if you don't feel completely comfortable doing this yourself, please just go to a hair salon and have a professional do it. You don't want to risk, ruining and sacrificing an expensive set of hair extensions. Just cuz. You were too impatient to go to the salon or wanted to save a couple bucks so yeah with that being said, let's just get into the tutorial. So before we get started, we just take a second to admire my cat. In the background she, like wrapped herself up and like those anyway. So, as you guys can see, I have all of my real hair tied up in a bun at the top of my head and basically, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take all of my clips and I'm just gon na clip them onto my Head in the same way that I would clip them in if I were actually wearing them, so if you're unfamiliar with wearing hair extensions, I will have down in the description bar an explanation of the order that I clip them in and why I clip them in. In that order, but yeah so just clip them onto your hands, the way normally would wear them. You know it looks a little weird, but this way you'll know where to cut and how to cut the layers without any of your real hair, actually getting in the way. So now just grab the pieces that are closest to your face, because those are the ones that we're going to be cutting first and then make sure that you brush through your hair. Because, obviously, you want to make sure your hair is nice and smooth with no tangles. So you get a nice even cut and since my natural hair falls about here, I'm going to start cutting a few inches below that. So I'll just grab your scissors and, as you can see, I'm cutting out a downwards angle and I'm not just cutting one straight through cut, I'm doing short, quick snips. So that way, the cut is not as blunt and it blends a little bit more. Naturally. Moving on to the other side, you want to make sure that your next section of hair is exactly lined up with the first section that you cut on the other side. So then I'm just gon na hold both sections of hair next to each other. So I can get a better idea of where to begin cutting this new piece of hair and again cutting in a downward angle, and you can kind of see that I slowly move my scissors down the piece of hair as they go along just check and make Sure that both sides are even it's always better to cut less than you think you need to so that way, you don't end up cutting your hair, too short, so if they're not perfectly even then you can just go in and cut off any extra that you Need to so again take another piece of hair brush through it, of course, and then hold it up next to the last piece you just cut, and so where that last piece ends is where you're going to begin cutting your next piece of hair. If that makes sense - and here you can kind of see a little bit better - what I was talking about with those small snips - I'm just really quickly, leaving the scissors open and close, but I'm never fully closing them. So just keep repeating this process until your extensions are all layered just make sure that you're always cutting on a downward angle, that all of your cuts are nice and clean and smooth, and that both sides of your head are even with each other. So once you're all done cutting and you clip your extensions back into your hair, they should blend seamlessly with your real hair. So I hope you guys found this video helpful. Thank you for watching and I'll see you in my next one bye.

Kristen Lemke: FINALLY! Exactly what I was looking for. I have seen SO many ways to cut extensions and this is hands down the tutorial I needed! Thank you!

Kayra Amore: Having you're hair up while cutting the extensions is so smart ! How have I never thought of this ?! I normally close the top of my extensions in a drawer and just estimate where i should cut. I am definitely trying this technique. This video was so helpful thanks girl xoxo

Tiffany Nicole Wine: This helped me get my extensions to match my hair right, along with layering to put it into a perfect pony tail. Thank you so much.

darktrix1: THIS IS SUPER HELPFUL! Thanks so much, I wear extensions loads but never thought to cut them. Thanks for the tips!

Roshni Parekh: I tried this and the cut came out to be perfect!!! I couldn't have been more thankful. I have some experience cutting my own hair but for anyone who's wanting to cut their extensions and is a first timer, I'd suggest using this very technique on another person you can use as a model :)

30SomethingMel: After each layer (weft) you take once you have cut the layer, then take the hair and cut in an upwards motion into the section (So the ends from the bottom to about 1cm up snip in an upwards motion - hope that makes sense). It will lightly feather the ends so they lay less bulkily and more feathered. It looks more natural too, especially in the layers that are around the top. you've done a good job of layering them and offered some good advice too :) M x

Fallon: Been wearing clip ins for 9 years and I’ve never thought to cut them this way. Thank you.

LinzMushel: I feel like such a derp. I never thought to get my own hair out of the way. I used to just grab each section and go down hahaha. Great idea!
