Hi everyone, it's jennifer from fibreflux in this video, i'm going to show you how to crochet this super cute no place like home blanket square. This reminds me of just a comfy cozy quilt or blanket that you would have laying around your house and the colors are very classic and we're going to be using some really neat puff stitches to create some texture on our square as well. We'Re going to begin by making some puff stitch motifs in some different colors, and then i'm going to show you how to use the join as you go technique to connect them all together and then we're going to put a nice simple, edging around it as well. So i'm going to walk you through the whole thing stitch by stitch and we're going to begin with the supplies. Next now the finished blanket square measures about 12 inches by 12 inches. Actually, mine was exactly 12 inches by 12 inches, but you can add more rounds to yours and change the size size if you will - and you can also connect this to other squares - to make a large blanket as well or you could work this up. For example, in some cotton yarn and do like a cloth or something like that now this pattern can be found free on the blog. You can buy the ad free pdf in my etsy shop or you could join our patron page and i do the uh a little booklet of our monthly patterns each month for our fiberflex gold pattern club. So let's get started for this project. You'Ll need a pair of scissors, a tapestry needle a tape measure is super helpful, we're going to be making our square 12 inches by 12 inches. So if you are working on a certain size and i'm going to show you if you want to make it smaller or larger as well, but a tape measure will be helpful for that for sizing, we're going to be using a six millimeter j crochet hook as A side note: this is my furls odyssey in the black and i'll put a link down below in a coupon code if you'd like to get one for yourself red heart with love - and this is a number four medium yarn on the yarn weight scale. Now i have four balls of this here: we're not going to use all of it, we're just going to be using small amounts from each ball. So this is a good kind of scrap yarn project as well, but the colors i have here, if you want to replicate my palette, are the mallard. This is called brick pewter and silver. It'S like a also called light gray when it's not see how it has like the metallic thread through it. I think it's called light gray when it's non-metallic like this, but we're going to be using a little bit of each of this yarn. So let's get started to begin our square, we're going to make a bunch of smaller squares, join them together to make one larger square, so we're going to make one together. But i wanted to kind of show you the layout here so you're going to need nine squares and we're going to sort of do like a little color pattern and you can make them all the same color it's completely up to you, but we are going to Do kind of like alternating colors here, so i did some teal and i'm just going to kind of lay them out to show you what i'm doing here, um see how i'm making like a pattern uh. So we're going to put these here so, as you can see, we need one more of the red squares. Okay, so we're gon na make this red square together. It'S just three rounds and it's all puff stitches uh, like our whole square, is gon na. Be it's nice and textured, so we're gon na make this one together. So i'm gon na grab whoops i'm gon na grab my red yarn and then once we get this last one made we're going to join them all together for our next part. So let me just scoot these out of the way and i'm going to grab my red yarn, and this is a real, quick little square. Just three rounds like i said and again you can do any colors. You, like you, don't have to just do two colors for this part um. You can do all one color. You could do every square different color. You could do a row darker to lighter make like a gradient or something like that. It'S it's totally up to you. So let me zoom in a little bit, so you can see what i'm doing here and what we're going to do to begin is put a slip. Knot on our hook so wrap the yarn around your fingers to make a loop bring the yarn behind the loop reach in with your hook, bring up that loop and tighten next we're going to chain six so to make a chain wrap the yarn around the hook. Bring it through the loop, that's one, two, three four five and six then we're going to join with a slip stitch to create a ring. Okay, so go into that first chain that you made all the way down here at the end, insert the hook into that chain bring up a loop now bring that loop through the loop. That'S already on your hook, and now we have the little ring that we'll be working our stitches into. Alternatively, if you prefer the magic ring, you could do that too. It'S totally up to you either way is fine. We'Re also going to hold this tail along the edges. We work to kind of weave it in as we go along, so to begin for round one we're going to work some puff stitches into the center of the ring. Now our puff stitches, i'm going to walk you through that stitch if you're not familiar. So what we want to do for our puff stitch is we're going to work our first one into the center of the ring so wrap. The yarn around the hook insert the hook into the center of the ring, wrap yarn around hook again and bring up a loop you're going to have three loops on your hook, wrap yarn around the hook. One more time reinsert it back into the ring, bring up a loop. You will have five loops on your hook. Let me just come in a little tiny bit more wrap yarn around hook again insert it into the ring. Bring up a loop you'll have seven loops on your hook, and i like to kind of wiggle it a little bit to kind of get those loops all nice and lined up wrap yarn around hook. One last time insert the hook into the center of the ring. Bring up a loop you'll have nine loops. On your hook. Now i like to once again kind of straighten things out, loosen up those loops a little bit so wrap the yarn around the hook and bring it through all nine of those loops. Okay, go nice and slow take your time and then we're going to chain one chain, two and chain: three: okay, now moving right around this ring here, still holding that tail along the edge we're going to work. Another puff stitch yarn around hook bring up a loop. Three loops around the hook, yarn around hook bring up a loop. Five loops are on the hook. Yarn around hook, bring up a loop, seven loops are on the hook. Yarn around hook bring up a loop, nine loops are on the hook and then once again wrap the yarn around the hook, kind of straighten things out. I like to loosen it up a little bit and bring it through all nine of those loops and then chain. One chain two and chain: three, all right: we're going to do this twice more now: okay, uh. As a side note, you might want to like push your puff stitch over a little bit, just to give yourself a little bit more space. All right, wrap yarn. Around hook bring up a loop, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn around hook, bring it through all nine of those loops, go nice and slow, and then three chains chain chain and chain whoops, my yarn splitting there we go all right, i'm going to Get a little bit more yarn here, all right, let's make our final puff for round one together slide things over a little yarn around hook, three loops five loops, seven loops nine loops straight i like to like just loosen it up a little bit. It'S a lot of loops yarn around hook, bring it through all nine loops work a chain chain and chain. Now we have the center here. So what we want to do i like to take this tail now and give it a tug just to close up this center and it sort of like straightens everything out now. This first puff stitch that we worked that loop that's sitting right on top and that first chain you did on that first puff we're going to join with a slip stitch to close the round so go into that top chain. Of that first puff stitch insert the hook, bring up a loop now bring that loop through the other loop on your hook and now round. One is complete, so we have the center of our square. Okay, then, what we're going gon na do for round two is to slip stitch over to this first chain. Three space. Remember: we did that chain. Three! We'Re gon na work a slip stitch in there just to get our hook in the right spot, so insert the hook into that chain. Three space bring up a loop, bring that loop through the loop already on your hook and now we're ready to work our first little corner of round two okay. So we're going to work a puff stitch once again, three loops five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn around hook, kind of loosen it all up a little and bring it through and chain. Three one, two three slide things over as needed. I like to push it over just to give myself some space and in that same chain, three space, we're going to work. Another puff stitch, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops loosen it all up, bring the hook all the way through and chain. Three one. Two and three okay, so we have our first little corner done: okay, hop over to the next chain, three space and we're gon na do the same thing. Work a puff stitch, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops, bring it all the way through all those loops and chain. Three one, two three and in that same space work. Your next puff three loops loops, seven loops nine loops, see how i'm like going like lifting my hook up. It kind of gives me a little bit more space as i'm, making the loops makes the new loops a little uh, looser, but not too loose. Now i'm going to wrap the yarn around the hook, bring it through all nine of those loops. Then you're going to chain three one: two three hop over to that next chain: three space and you're gon na do the same thing. Work your puff stitch, three loops. Five loops, seven loops and nine loops yarn round hook bring it through all nine of those loops and chain. Three one: two three work: a puff stitch into the same space: i'm just gon na get a little bit more yarn here and we're gon na go three loops: five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn round hulk, bring through all those loops that you just made and Chain three one: two: three: okay, we're working right on around here and sometimes i like to sort of reposition these puffs just to kind of scrunch them up next to one another. Okay, our last chain, three space of the round three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn around hook, bring it through all nine of those loops whoops. Let'S try that again, all nine of those loops and chain three one, two three scoot that puff over. If you need to and work one more puff in that chain, three space, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn around hook, bring through all nine of those loops and chain. Three one, two three and now we're going to close the round by working a slip stitch in that top chain of that first puff that we worked there's a little loop on top, so just insert your hook, bring up a loop, bring that loop through the loop. Already on your hook and round two is finished, so it should look kind of like that. It looks a little circular right now, but we're gon na start creating some sides next on our square. Okay, so i'm just gon na get a little bit more yarn for round three, our last round of our little square, we're going to slip stitch over to that chain. Three space like we did before so just work, a slip, stitch right in that chain, three space to get your hook in the right spot and then what you'll do is. This is going to be a corner. So now we have a corner side, corner side, corner and so forth. Okay, so we're going to work our first corner here so work your puff stitch in that first corner space, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn round hook bring it through all nine loops and chain. Three one, two: three and in that same space work a puff, stitch, three loops, five loops, seven loops nine loops yarn around hook, bring it through all nine of those loops and chain. Three one, two, three all right, so we have a corner made. Now we have a side okay, so it's kind of in between the corners that space right there. So in that next space work a puff stitch in that side, space yarn around hook bring it through all nine of those loops and chain. Three one, two, three all right, so the side is created now we're at a corner again, so we're going to work a corner into our corner. The corners are always work. The same so once again, work a puff stitch into that corner. Three loops: five. Seven nine yard round hook bring through all nine of those loops and chain. Three. Now we're going to work the next part of our corner in that same space working another puff stitch. Three five: seven nine loops bring it through all nine of those loops and chain. Three, so now we have a corner side and a corner, i'm going to zoom out just a little bit because our square is growing and what we're going to do is work another side, so work your puff stitch into that next side space and bring it through. All nine of those loops and chain, three one whoops, two and three all right so side is worked work into the corner space; three five; seven: nine in that corner space chain, three one two three and then work a puff in that same space, three: five: seven. Nine bring it through all nine of those loops and chain. Three all right. We are working our way. All the way around here work a puff stitch into the side space next, three, five, seven, nine, all nine of those loops and chain three and then in the corner space. Here, three: five: seven: nine or bring it through all nine of those loops. There we go. I had to catch that last one there chain, three and in the same space work another puff stitch; three: five, seven, nine, all nine of those loops and chain; three one: two three now we're at our last side, space of our square, so we're gon na work. A puff stitch in that side space once again, three loops five loops, seven loops nine loops and bring it through all nine loops and chain three and then join to close the same way, we've been doing it into that top most chain of that first puff that We worked join that with a slip stitch and our square is complete. We'Re going to straighten it out a little bit. It might be a little lumpy right now, but what we're going to do is cut the yarn and we're going to fasten off, and then i like to just sort of sharpen up these corners, make sure everything's correct and looks good. And then i like to pull that center tail, just pull it nice and tight to close up the center, so our square is done. Okay, once you finish, your square you'll want to make a total of nine, like i mentioned before, so what we're going to do now, i'm going to sort of i like to before we do the join as you go. I like to sort of lay these out and arrange them just so i can, you know, make a plan for, as i'm um stitching them up. So this is kind of my layout that i'm gon na be doing we're gon na take one of our neutral colors and we're gon na do um some half double crochets to join our squares together. So what you want to do is grab a square and we can kind of just kind of slide. This whole thing out of the way you can leave them in place if you want and we're going to grab our hook and then what you're going to do is whatever color you want to do. You'Re going to just um for the it'll sort of make a grid in between your squares. So you know you want to be mindful about what color you pick, because it will go throughout the square and then what we're going to do is i'm going to give my end a fresh cut here. Just so, it's not coming apart um. What you're going to do is you're going to tie the yarn into any corner space, and let me just zoom in so you can see my stitches a little better and you're just going to hook the new yarn on pull it through and then just tie it Right on to the corner, just like that, okay, so then what you're going to do? You can hold that tail along the edges. You work in all these tails that we have here we're going to deal with those later. Okay, so insert your hook back into that corner space bring up a loop and we're going to chain two. This chain two counts as one of our half double crochets, so to work our corner, we're going to work, a half double crochet into that space and again let me just zoom in a little bit so to make a half double crochet wrap the yarn around the Hook, insert it into the corner space and bring up a loop wrap yarn around hook, bring it through all three loops. That'S the half double crochet stitch. Then we're going to work one more into that corner space. Then what we're gon na do is chain two one. Two and in that same space we're going to work three half double crochets, so one two and three now i didn't mention this before, but we're going to put a full round on this square before we start joining okay, so this one will be done slightly differently Than the other ones, okay, then, what we're going to do is we're going to chain one and then, in this side, space we're going to work. Three half double crochets, so one two three chain, one in our next side, space do the same thing: three half double crochet, one, two three and chain one now we're at a corner again, so our corners are three half double crochet in that corner space. One two and three and then a chain two: you can slide things over a little bit if you need to chain two one: two and three half double crochets, one: two and three. Then we're going to chain one and now we're going to go down the sides. Three: half double crochets in each side; space, one two and three chain: one next side: space, three half double crochet, one: two three chain, one: if you come across the tail, just um kind of hold it along the edge and that'll weave it in now we're at The corner space again, so you can hold this tail along the edges. You work and work. Three half double crochet, one: two three chain: two one: two and three: more: half double crochets in that corner space. So one two three chain: one now we're at a side space again, so three half double crochets one: two and three next chain. One then work three half double crochets into that next side, space. So one two and three all right, we're at a tail. I'M just gon na hold that along the edge like we've, been doing, okay and now we're at a corner space once again, so we're gon na chain one and then in that corner space work, three half double crochet, one two three chain: two one two and then In the same space work, three half double crochet once again, one holding that tail along the edge as we work. Let me get that straightened out there we go so that was one two and three okay chain. One now we're working down the last side of our square not doing any joins yet once again. In that first side, space work, three half double crochet, that's one two three chain one and then in that last side, space here, three half double crochet, one. Two and three chain, one all right: we're going to join with a slip stitch to close the round, like we've, been doing before with our other rounds, and then this square is done. So what you want to do is we're going to cut the yarn and fasten off so you're going to do this one independently of the other ones. Okay and i like to just get those corners, nice and sharp, and then we're just going to kind of put this right here for a moment. And let me just zoom out, because we have some more things going on here and we're going to grab our next square, because what we want to do is we're going to start joining our square onto the other one okay. So we're going to start working around and do our joins, and so we're going to keep this one handy here and whatever color sequence you're doing uh, whatever you've planned out, you want to just grab the next color for me, i'm i'm going to do the teal Next, because i just did a red, bring the new yarn through and we're gon na just tie it right on there and we're gon na do the same thing. We'Re gon na get our square started the same way we did before. Okay, once your yarn is joined on grab your hook once again, reach into that corner, space bring up a loop and we're going to begin we're going to work. I'M going to lay these here, so i can show you we're going to work across as we normally would and then, when we get to this first corner here, then we'll begin joining so we're just going to start at the same way. We would this square at first before we do any joins um, and so what we need to do, i'm just getting my everything situated here. We need to chain two same way. We did on the other square and in that same corner space work, two half double crochets to start because that chain two counts as one of our half double crochets push things over as needed, because it's in that corner space and then we're going to chain two To create that corner space of this round and then in the same space work three more half double crochet, one, two and three chain: one: i'm gon na drop that tail it because i incorporated it, go to your first side space and work. Three: half double crochet, one: two and three chain: one next side: space; here, three half double crochet, one: two and three chain: one now we're at the corner space once again and we're ready to join it onto our square. So what we need to do to start is just start working the square as you are the corner, rather, as you normally would so in that corner space work, your three half double crochets, one two and three next chain: one and then grab your other square. Any of the corner spaces will do we're going to find the corner space of this square, and then what we want to do is do our slip. Stitch join. So it's very easy. I like to go in from the top. I know a couple of you in past tutorials have told me you like to come up from the bottom, so if you have a preference, definitely do that, but what i do holding your yarn in your hand, is grab your corner space of your other square. Go in from the top reach back here, scoop up the yarn, that's in your hand and bring up a loop now bring that loop through the loop. That'S already on your hook and our squares are now officially joined, so you can work another chain one and then go back down into this square, your teal square and work your three half double crochets, just to complete that corner. Okay. So one two and three now we need to grab our square again because we're ready to join so locate the spot across your square, see. I have my corner and my side and we're going to locate that spot where we need to make our join and once again we're going to go in from the top reach back and scoop up that yarn bring that loop through the loop. Already on your hook and then we're going to go back down to our square and work, our three half double crochet stitches. So normally remember when we did our side stitches, we had a chain one in between instead of doing that chain, one we're just doing a slip. Stitch join instead, okay, where we need to join okay. So i did one half double crochet, two half double crochet whoops. I picked up a random loop here and three half double whoops. I did it again: three half double crochets in that side. Space now we're ready to join so go find the spot where you need to join it. For here it's right here, if you're kind of losing your spot um, where you're at here lay it back on the table and just kind of line it up. That'S uh helpful, sometimes too so go back in the spot, where you need to join going from the top reach back scoop up that yarn and bring that loop through the other loop on your hook. Go back down now to your teal square work, three half double crochets in that next side; space, one two and three and then go back to your square, find where you need to join. In this case. It'S right here lay it on the table and kind of line it up. If you need to reach back scoop up that yarn and slip stitch, join it okay, now we're at a corner, so we're going to do the corner kind of the same way. We did back here, okay, so go into that corner space of your teal square, whatever color you're doing i'm just saying the color for reference to help you so we're going to work. Three half double crochets into that corner space, one two and three. So we work the first half of our corner. Then we're going to join it so remember we're going to do a chain one and then we're going to go into the corner space of our other square. Go in from the top reach back scoop up that yarn work, a slip, stitch another chain, one and then go back down to your original square here and work: three half double crochets, so one sliding things over as needed: two and three half double crochets. Okay. So before we finish our square, because it's pretty much like the other one that we did, let's look at our handy work. We have a lovely looking join here that um it lays nice and flat, and it's everything's just nice and framed in okay. So let's um go ahead: we can finish up this square together and then we can just start joining on all of the other squares. Now i will hop in um before we finish it up and show you some other situations you might run into, but for the most part it's just going to be joining your squares like we just did so go ahead and work a chain one and just finish Up your square, how we did the first one, so i'm in a side space, so i'm working three half double crochets chain, one next space, which is a side space; three half double crochets, one: two whoops! I picked up my tail by accident. So, let's get that tail out of the way we can kind of hold that on the edge like we've been doing and uh half double crochet chain. One now read a corner: the corner is just going to be the same way. We'Ve been doing three half double crochet, one two three chain: two, because it's a corner and then three half double crochets. I have my tail here, i'm holding so one two three chain, one and then let's uh head down the last side of our square here. So we're at a side space, so just work, three half double crochet, one, two and three chain, one and then the last side, space of our uh little piece here. That'S growing work, three half double crochets in that last side space and then we're going to join with a slip stitch to close the round. Okay same way, we've been doing all right. We can cut this yarn and fasten off and then for our sequence, because we're kind of working across the top here we would do a red one next and then this teal color whoops it's backwards and then a red and then a teal. So we're just going to keep joining squares now. One thing i wanted to show you i'm going to add a few more squares here, but sometimes when you're joining um one like when you come down here and you're joining. Let me just zoom out, so you can see when you're joining a square onto two already. The join is gon na, be in the middle here, so this middle space. So when i get to that spot, i'm gon na join some more squares and show you. But when i get to some of these spots, where it's a little bit different, where you might want to join i'll, show you that as well, so i'm working on joining my fourth square. As you can see, i added a few more and this middle one here that i want to join. I wanted to show you that so i've already started the corner, so i'm going to do my chain one and then, when we're ready to do the join now before we've been going into the corner spaces. So when you have two together that you're joining like this, if you go into the corner spaces, it's going to be off center because see here's the corner space of this one. Here'S the corner space of this one, but this space in the middle here where we joined, is the center. So if you were to join in either of those spaces that we've been doing for the other ones, it would be off center. So just um when you reach one of these, where you're joining it into two go into that space. Where see, there's your join and then there's a space right above it just go into that center. Most space scoop up that yarn and then just do your join. That way, okay, now let me do my chain one and we can finish our corner. So three half double crochets to finish that corner. I'M just going to do this real quick, so i can show you how it looks one two and three and then that one is gon na i'm gon na continue joining across, but you can see how it just sort of like connects it right there in the Middle okay, so keep adding all of your squares. I have a few more. I need to do now, sometimes, when you're joining your squares you're, going to have one with that you're joining into three, so the rule of thumb, no matter what you're joining, how many you're joining into how many um you just want to stay in the center. Keep things centered okay, so i have started my corner here and i'm just going to take it uh this time straight across, so we're going to go into this corner space here of the one straight across just the center. Most is the is the rule of thumb here so go into that center. Actually, i need to do my chain one there. We go go into that center, most space, that you see when you're joining your square and do your join and then you can turn it. If you need to now do your chain one and then you can just finish off your corner of your square, that you're joining okay. So when you have a situation like that, you'll know what to do when you come across that as well, so we're making great progress, i'm just putting that very last stitch here to close the last round of our last square and i'm just going to show it To you in just a minute, so let's grab our scissors and we're going to cut this yarn and fasten that off. Okay. So, as you can see, all of our squares are joined and they look so nice and neat and framed in. But i want to um put a nice little single crochet edge on it, just because it will help it to um stay just give it like a nice little frame, but it also kind of smooths out some of these edges. Um. Usually, when you join as you go because we're doing slip stitch joins, you can get a little bit of like a dip here, so we're going to put a single crochet edge, just all around the outside of it, and it will um give us a nice frame. So i'm gon na um get started with this darker color here this darker gray, because i thought it would look um neutral, like the join as you go, color that we did, but um almost give it like a tonal, because it's just a shade darker than our Silver here, okay, so what you want to do is tie your yarn into any corner space, so grab your yarn and your hook and then just hook it on and bring it through and just tie that right on there - and this is just a really simple little Edge that we're gon na do now, if you wanted your edge to be a little bit more substantial, you could do a half double crochet border or a double crochet border. If you want you, could you could keep growing it once you've tied your yarn on just reach back into that corner space, bring up a loop and chain one now this chain one will count as a single crochet. So we're going to put three single crochets into this corner space so to make a single crochet insert the hook into that corner. Space bring up a loop, wrap yarn around hook, bring it through both loops. That'S one, two and three just like that. Now, if you need to turn your work, um go ahead and do that and i'm gon na zoom in just a little bit, so you can see and all of our yarn is kind of creeping over. So let me just clear the way here. Okay, so what we're gon na do is just work, a single crochet in each stitch across and in each space across okay. So if you come to a stitch you're going to work, a single crochet in that, if you come to a space, you'll work, a single crochet into that until we get to this next corner down here at the end, so go ahead and work. There'S our first stitch work, a single crochet into that first stitch single crochet into the next stitch and so forth. All the way across just to give us a nice little clean edge of our square. Now, i'm at a space so just go right into that space and work your single crochet when you've worked across that first square and you come to where the two squares join there's a lot going on there. So i'm just going to show you what we do here so you're going to. Let me just back up a stitch, so i can show you you're going to work that last stitch that you see and then you're going to work into the corner space of your square. Just work your same single crochets and then you're going to hop over that join and work, a single crochet in the next corner space; okay, just like that and then you're just going to keep going across. Okay, so just keep going with your stitches and then in just a minute i'll show you how we do the corners and then you'll know how to do the whole edging. Okay, when you're ready to get to a corner, it's kind of the same as when we started our edging you're just going to work four single crochets into the corner space, so one two three and four, and then you can just keep going down the other side. Okay, just working the last few stitches of our edging here and we're just going to join the same way, we've been with a slip stitch to close the round. Actually, let me just my loop split a little there. We go we're just going to join okay and then, when you're finished, you can cut we're going to straighten this out in just a minute, fasten off the yarn and then just kind of like straighten it all out, pull it up, pull some of this stuff open. Now you could do a little um steam to kind of block it. If you want to, if you, if you use now, i used acrylic yarn. If you use some natural fibers, you could wet block it and kind of pin it back now. The other thing about working with lots of colors and motifs like this is the back. So what you'll want to do is go ahead and snip. All those tails that you wove in as you went along just give them a little snip all around and the ones that are kind of on the end like this you'll have to weave in with a tapestry needle great. So just get your tail snipped and when you have one here like, i was saying uh. That'S on the end that you can't just snip like that, because the knot is there on the edge just take your tapestry needle and just weave it in and when you weave it in. I have this gray here: try to stay in the same color area so that you won't see this like gray line traveling through your work. Okay, so our ends are all woven in and everything looks great. So that's how you crochet the no place like home, blanket square thanks so much for watching and be sure and click the subscribe button to get all the latest fiberflux video updates.
