Feathered Layers Haircut Tutorial - How To Cut Feathered Bangs & Face Frame - Thesalonguy

#haircut #bangs #hairstyles

In this video I show how I cut feathered bangs and a face frame with a simple yet effective haircut technique that can be done on dry or wet hair. The key is to find where you will start the angle and to not cut too deep into the side sections. You want to preserve as much length as possible around the face frame.

What is going on YouTube Steven, a salon guy here and in today's video I'm going to be breaking down how to get feathered bangs. So when you think of a feathered fringe, you know a lot of people. Think of Farrah Fawcett. You know right away of, like you know, a short kind of bangs or fringe right into this area. It just kind of feathers back and starts off short and then angles down and through here. So it's really really a unique haircut and I'm gon na break down. My method and kind of explain to why I would do the things that I do to achieve that look, so I'm ready to go. Let'S get started alright, so one of you guys, I'm gon na start on this side of the head and I'm gon na. Do this dry, so you can see those instant results after I'm done cutting. I just want to kind of bring something up that came to my attention when I was sectioning this off, you see that little gap right there. Well that happens. If you don't take a thick enough section and you don't want to cut something like this trust me, so what we need to do is go back in and take a wider section, so you have enough hair that the section doesn't have any really really thin spots And you want to have it? That'S gon na be really good balance. You know you want to make sure that there's enough hair that it's not super thick, but it's thick enough that you'll be able to get the result you're looking for so the reason I have this sectioned off like this, which I'll show you here, as you can See it's coming on an angle and I'm working off of a center parting and through here now you want the sectioning to kind of match up with the look that you want. Okay, I wouldn't take this a straight horizontal section, because it's really not going to complement the shape of going for so I'm kind of creating my own roadmap to help me to kind of mirror this flow shorter to longer into here. Now the next important thing you want to take into consideration is where you're gon na start this. Okay, if this was wet, hair right - and I brought this down like this, for example - say I locked this in. I come down this way and I were to cut it say way up here and I'm thinking she's like oh, I want my bangs to be right to the eyebrow and you cut it right there. What'S gon na happen when the hair dries she's gon na. Take the scissors and stab you one and two: you know. Obviously it's going to shrink up this way, so you want to really really be careful that anytime you're doing something like this. If you're doing it on wet hair, you know sometimes make sure you give yourself a little bit of room that you know it's going to spring up a little bit. Okay and trust me you, ladies out there you know what happens when you, your bangs, get cut too short. So I'm doing this on dry, hair or obviously so you could see you know instant results. So, let's try one technique where you actually use the comb like this and you lock in the section right in through here and it's coming down on an angle going short too long. Now, here's one thing that you really want to keep in mind as we're doing this, so, as you can see into here, I have the comb kind of on. Obviously it's on an angle, but the angle: what happens if I were to cut this? This angle is not steep enough, which means I'm gon na chomp way into this part of the head right in through here, and let me just turn the head a little bit more, so you could see okay, here's the side angle. If I were to coldness and say start my angle here and cut this all this hair is gon na get chopped off, and that would be a big no-no again for the client. So what you need to do is you need to really utilize your finger position? Your body position and utilize the comb like this all right see my comb now is starting off short, but it's going longer and it's really extending into that length. So a lot of times. You know women want to keep the length down into this corners and right in through here. So let's start right here and I want me to do is I have my comb locked in. I have my angle to where the top of the comb is pointed towards the ceiling all right. I feel pretty comfortable with that angle and what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut going shorter to longer all right, there's my first angle right through here and now I'm going to pick up here and connect and there's where the last section left off. Let'S get the comb in there, so we can make sure that we're working this down nicely and there we have it. Okay, we have a nice face, frame alright or a feathered. Look now. Here'S what's gon na happen. Remember we have the rest of this hair to cut too so, let's take this section down again on a diagonal section going back and what happened what's happening now is we're now starting to get to the back of the head. Alright, we're now starting to get to the back of the head, which means this hair needs to lay and fall right through here. So we need to do. Is we need to re-evaluate what's going on in through here and we're gon na come back with the comb? Lock in the hair and place again let this let the side panel kind of just fall down until you're ready to get there we're going to use the comb utilize, our fingers, there's the guide right there and again we're cutting straight down this way same thing. What we're going to do is we're going to utilize our comb, we're going to look and see where the previous section was. You want to make sure you're really locking that comb in through here and now we're going to continue working in through the lengths like that. Alright and if you've got any little pieces right here, that you can go in and clean them up, so what we've done again is we've created this flowing look into here now again, it may just look like a big clump of hair is cut down in through Here, but I'm going to show you guys the real secret to this whole haircut and why I'm doing this so here we are we're gon na comb it straight down. As you can see, this hair wants to fall forward right in through here, but now look what's happening. This is falling right into place exactly where I want it to be, because that means we can literally just go in now and follow the guide like this and work it down all the way in through the length. Now, obviously, I didn't cut any of the back lectin through here, so we can cut this straight across. You know. The point was really just to kind of show you guys how to create the face framing through here and now. Watch this here is the magic of this haircut. Let me just show you guys again on this side and through here what we have going on right. It looks like sorry mannequin head, it looks like you know, just so much hair coming in through here. Here'S the feathered part now watch this we're gon na brush this all back now and look what's happening. All this hair now is flowing back away from the face. Creating a feathered. Look alright now again mind you, I didn't blow-dry this at all. I didn't wet it! So this was basically right out of the box, which is very difficult to do sometimes when you're trying to work on mannequin here. So I'm trying to manipulate this as best I can, but, as you can see what's happening, is we've got this flowing layer right into here and this all flows back in through the sides. So I did go ahead and wet this down a little bit and I did blow dry it all forward. Like I cut it, and now we can bring it back and I just want to show you guys how nicely it now does feather back. So you could really see the flow. Now I'm just going to put a little bit of hairspray right in through here, so you could see how it all nicely works together, and this really really does is a beautiful haircut. It'S very very simple, but what it does do is this: creates a nice feather or flowy type layered, look without having to take off a whole lot of hair internally and it's a classic, but really really beautiful. Look and here we go. I hope you guys enjoyed this. Let me know in the comments below what you think and if you're wondering why I didn't cut the other side. Well, I want to stay ahead of the game because sometimes - and I'm referred to as uneven Steven - so let's just focus on the one side for now, but now seriously, if you want do the opposite side, it's really just ending up your body positioning, but the same Technique and give it a try practice on a mannequin if you're, a stylist or in school and you're gon na, be amazed on how great this looks and how easy of a technique it is. So. Thank you guys so much for watching. Don'T forget to Like comment and subscribe and I'll see you next time for videos with a salon. Guy

Sandra Mullikiin: This is pretty much how I always had cut my own hair for years. I usually would just go into a salon so they could trim up the back of my hair for me once every 6 months. Now I'm older and have been sick a lot I don't keep my hair cut neatly like I use to and had kind of forgotten exactly how I would do it. But now my hair is thinner, frizzier, and a lot harder to do anything with. Yet, this was still a very helpful and nostalgic reminder for me, lol. Thank you so much. So few on here ever show how easy it can be to just have a nice classic cut, without all those bells and whistles confusing everyone. Simplicity is so appreciated by a lot of us. Good job!

Pixietoria: Nice and simple! Ive been cutting my own hair for years. As someone whose hair sits in a way that's rather temperamental, this is why I ALWAYS cut it dry. You get no horrifying surprises :) I used to go to a barbershop purely for this reason. She always cut my hair dry so she knew exactly how it fell naturally. No styling then required ;)

eckalecka: I cut this style on my own hair, and will never again go back to any other cut. This "feathered" cut is the one we've all been looking for but no one ever gets right!!!!. Finally I found the perfect haircut!!! Finally someone showed us how to do it correctly. Thank you good sir!! My 21 yo daughter had been looking for curtain bangs, thinking it would attain the wing back, Farrah Fawcett, look. Tried it on my own hair, and her hair, and it just looked meh!! After seeing how well my hair did with THIS cut, though, my daughter wanted me to do hers too!! I knew she really loved it because usually she would never want the same hairstyle as her 50 year old mother. This cut is very easy to do yourself!!

Diana West: Love this simple style-have been cutting my own hair for years but I love your clear and amusing tutorials on cutting layered hair-love the mannequin ‘s hair color, too

Zoey Kitty: I wish I could find a hairdresser like this man, he seems to be a perfectionist, but I’ve only had horror stories coming out of a salon and wish I could do this myself, but too risky for me my hair is getting so thin from iron deficiency. But this was definitely a great video

Hyacinth Perrault - LG: Thank you so much - an amazing tutorial! Amazing why so many stylists find it so complicated!

Leila: Thank you so much for this ! I actually did it, and it looks just how I wanted, but now it's time to cut it again !

Stacey Here We Grow Again: I know exactly what happens when we cut our hair too short Lol. I've done that so many times (currently suffering from weird layers I messed up lol) You have such great videos and teach so well!! I wish I could borrow you for a few hours so you can help me with some sort of hairstyle. Thank you so much for these great tips. I might end up giving it a go once my hair grows back from the last mistake I made lol

Stephanie Wilson: Perfect. This is just what i was looking for. Thank u so much for showing how to stop having gaps along my hairline! It's been driving me crazy! Really good tips and I appreciate it very much.

Steff Ferra: Thank you! This is gonna be a game changer for me next time I cut my hair. ❤

Susan Tomkins: Wow we just did this hair cut. My sister followed the video and it came out perfectly. Thank you so much! Lockdown hair gone

AlcideIzMine: Great tutorial! I'm gonna try it on myself at home I love feathered hair.

Clubeleza: Easy to do and the result is awesome. Thanks a lot!

Jill Ford: Love it|!, been cutting my own hair for 16 years, - finally got side swept fringe spot on from your last video, - now going to try this, I've got thick hair and salon layers never worked for me, pretty confident this will, have done some bits right muddling through on my own and got away with blue murder!,- always looked good but this will make it specail! xx

Al: I love the way you teach. Very detailed and thorough!

A DLG: Good job. That is so simple, but it is a very beautiful look, and then you can combine with a mixture of other techniques. I'm glad you combed the hair to see how it would look.

It's Wednesday, Screw Ironing: Timeless Slay! And you are a super approachable stylist Thx!

Surgicaltoolbox RN Health Beauty: It’s a classic long hair face framer. Never goes out of style ever. I have long thick hair and some sylists don’t get it. They say I’ll have to cut your hair shorter. No way just make a super sharp angle to connect.

Sharon Margaret Stewart: Thanks Steven it looks a amazing cut, trendy and sophisticated , well done

Rebecca Salyers: It worked perfectly on my hair !! Thanks so much!!!

Sandy Howell: I love that you do this on a mannequin head. It's the best way for those just starting out because that's exactly what you use when first learning. Well done!!

JC: Did 3 of your videos in 2 days on my hair, finally have a sharp haircut i can wear with confidence! 70's rock, thanks!!

Doreen Scherer: Beautiful cut! Believe it or not, I can't find anyone to do this! Every young beautician wants to cut my hair going forward towards my face, not going back. Then they want to tell me that I can wear it either way (no I can't!) How exactly would I explain this cut to a younger stylist? Also, I have extremely thick hair. Can more layers be added, especially in the crown? (I need it because the thickness weighs it down.) Thanks for showing this classic cut!

Sepehr Jalali moghaddam: I loved the technique! Tnx for the wonderful video as always.

Helena_ Plays34: I am going to show my stylist this video, it’s so handy. I wanted a camila look and I’m going to get it now. Thanks

Shadow's against the wind: I'm also a professional hairdresser and I do use this method and also depending on the thickness and how the client wants the elevation of layers, I've some times brought it up and layered even more if the hair is thick enough....

Sherry Hall: Looks really nice. Thank you for showing me. I’m going to try it.

C D: I love it! Thought it was too short at first but nope, it's gorgeous!

Jillian Bruno: I love his compassion for the short bangs dilemma.

Shelly Cove: Amazing cut, this is the best, I will use this style on my bangs, thank you for sharing this great video

Marnie Bishop: I have had such a hard time getting stylist to cut my hair like this. they ALWAYS say they have to cut the length. I'm going to just do it myself. Thanks so much.

Debra Williams: hairdressers are all closed for lock down this was really a simple demonstration for a great cut thank you so much

Lily Ann Adoration: Thanks to The SalonGuys for sharing, the technique of how to cut the layers hair. I love layers hair cut. ❤️

QApple: Hi Stephen, I have a hard finding a stylist to do face framing haircut. Thank you for this tutorial I think I can achieved the cut that I have been wanting for over 20 years since my hair stylist moved away and not able to find one that can do the face framing haircut.

Carolyn Rhae Spencer: I love it .Today I'm going to be doing the same cut but on a gentleman.Hopefully I'll get similar results.

jack: love this!! would you ever consider doing Daniel Howells’s new haircut?

Castiel1123: You are the craziest hairdresser I've ever seen. I love your videos but that looked so good I have to attempt this haircut the first chance I get. Thank you Steve.

Raquel Gallo: Would you use this same technique (part in the middle) if hair is worn with a slight side part? Or would you side part and then cut?

Kristen Elizabeth: Love it!

eckalecka: Also, how can we add our own pics of this cut to share results? Best!!!!! cut that suits my face shape that I've been looking for for 25 years. Works on very thin, 50 year old hair. No layers, just this exact cut. Layers seem to make thin hair appear even thinner; this makes it seem thicker somehow.

Ramzi Khoury: I'm a man with really long hair and take care of it a lot.. A freak so to speak.. I just Love the way you approach hair the respect and professionalism... And surely Love your sense of humor.. A nice man you are.. Thank you for being there among the hair heartbreaking massacres on the net...

Lidie YaY: Love love love and remember this style :)) If only stylists could learn this Technic ..I have such a hard time explaining this THANK YOU (think my stylist would be offended if i send her this??) lol

Suzanne: How would you cut face framing layers on long hair? Can it be done as feathered side swept bangs that do not join the bottom of the length, if hair is very long?

B G: @TheSalonGuy please could u do a video on how to layer back section of hair on oneself as is required during these times! Thank you. You are awesome esp how you explain.

Michelle Anderson: Thank you! Love it!

Peace 21: The words can not express how good you are Thanks a lot

Pamela Allen: I LOVE THIS. THIS IS HOW THE USED TO CUT MY HAIR.

Ms De: hello, will this also work on rebonded hair? I always wanted to have this kind of bangs but I never knew what's its name and every time I try to explain it to the hairdresser or show them a picture, it always comes out different. Thank God I found your video and I've already decided I'll cut it myself after rebonding my hair next week since they always don't get what I want with my hair huhuhuhu. Wish me lucckkk :'(

J, Louis: That’s nice I love to learn from u , I’m a barber and a hairstylist,still learning,thanks

Cantrina Dent: Thank you Steven, I have a feathered cut at 2: o’clock today and I needed a brush up

Bumble Bee: Beautiful work

Yvette Givens: Thanks. You are super funny and cute! I just got my very long (back of my thighs) hair cut short!

Lady So Well: Excellent instructions!

kat: oh man i shaved a part of the side of my head a couple years ago and it's finally grown out enough that i can blend it nicely into this cut yessss

Elle may: i love it, i used to have the same hair cut in the 80;s lol

Belinda Sutton: Ladies your so right. I have searched all around my town for a hair stylus that can layer and feather hair you can even show them a good clear picture of it. They may say yes I can do that but the minute they start cutting you know they can not. They do not even section your hair off for one. I believe it's a lost art around here anyway. These wild looking uneven hair styles is all they know how to cut. It really makes me mad no talent at all just cut. It's like even does not matter anymore. Oh but it does the now days styles are a dime a dozen there every where. A unique hair style will turn heads. I'm from the 70's through the 90's era I've seen a lot of bad styles come and go. I've also had layered hair styles that where feathered back into the rest of your hair that was beautiful I used to get so many compliments. Think I'll try and do it myself as best as I can. It will still beat what's out there. It takes someone who really loves hair and knows some history on hair styles. I've noticed some do not even own curling irons anymore. Run from them.

Whitney: Thinking of doing this for my daughter who has thick wavy hair. She doesn’t want bangs but she does want some shorter layers around her face. Is it be best to cut with part in middle or is it ok to let it fall on natural part? Hers is pretty close to center but off to the left a little. Thank you

The Adventures Of Suzy & Betty: I wish you were in my area! I wanted the farrah fawcett haircut and the stylist really botched up my hair including cutting off six inches in the back that I wanted to stay long. You and Ruby Tuesday on youtube really know how to do it right!

Da Noonz Peterson: Hahaha!!!! “She’s gonna take the scissors & stab you!”:-))) HILARIOUS!!! Thank u for these tutorials-they’re awesome!!!

Mathu Mathy: Love it

Annabelle Pamugas: I love it... thank you for sharing

Lia Perez: Headed to the bathroom, scissors in hand . Loved the tutorial. Easy peasy.

Sonia Sohi: This is the look I want!

Jo Langfield: Loved this video. Thankyou for showing & sharing .

Laurie Klimczyk MSN RN: Where are you Salon Guy? I have been through so many stylists and after careful discussion with each one, I still end up with the same old reverse angle style, and minimal layers. I finally decided to search YouTube and here you are. Yes, it is a 70's style which my thick hair does very well with, as opposed to the reverse angle which just gives me POOFY sides.

Katy M: I've already got my hair like this. I did it myself

JoJo Guam: I love the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle, I still have yet to find someone to style my hair that way

Elana Jane: Great tutorial!!

Aliyah Does Hair: Hi I know this video is old but do you have a video explaining how I would layer the back this way? I love this cut and I’ve done it on my wig but I want to layer the back as well.

Kim phillips: I love it very simple

Kelly NonicR: So if you want your bangs to stay like that for the whole day what do u use

Jenny Corcione: you are the best , i love this hair cut . can i do myself?

Sandy Aurelio: Oh man I used to have my hair cut like that. But move away from my stylist and can’t find anyone else can do that to my hair

Mimi Ramone: I wish one of these tutorials would cover thick hair that needs to be part of an eight or 16 sections. My hair ate the comb just watching this.

Della Tompkins: Great job instructing!

Fork: Watching this during quarantine. Thanks man!

Mia Doser: Awesome !! Thank you for sharing

sheila rickard: Can you still get your hair cut like this if it is already cut at sholder length and cut 3 inches long on the top and already cut in layers. With out being cut to much shorter. Thanks.

Debbie Giori: Love it!

Cristina Caliguiran: Thanks Stephen, well explained.

life: Thank you, saves me money, by doing my own hair.

Christine Anne de Guzman: Can you do this with a right side parting too?

Lena Fuggi: This cut is gorgeous

HH S: sounds & looks easy let’s see if my stylist can duplicate!
