How to Cut Your Curly Bangs

Hey curl friends! How are you holding up with being holed up? First of all, remember: you’re doing the right thing! We’re all in this together. And after all: Distance makes the heart grow fonder -- and, ahem, unfortunately -- the bangs grow longer!

If you’ve got fringe and are anything like me, you’re probably missing your every-2-weeks bang trim! Reminder: 9 times out of 10, your “I’m cutting my own hair” adventure will likely turn out to be a “D.I. WHY THE F Did I Do This” moment. But don’t worry. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Best part? I’m here to guide you. If you just can’t stand it anymore (and can no longer clearly see your Netflix screen behind the overgrowth of curly bang bounty) then please read on!

Ok, before we get scissor happy, let me gently remind you: this trim should be a ONE TIME ONLY deal. I support and empower your independence, but there are certain things in life that just need to be left to the trained professional. This includes cutting your own hair. Unless you’re into that uneven-janky-mullet look...then no judgement.

Good thing you’ve got a profesh like me to let you in on some tricks of the trade. Listen up:

Reality Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

Ok, I love you, but let’s get really real: do you even look good with bangs? Before you start sharpening your scissors, try pinning the front of your hair up with a clip or bobby pins to create a test-run bang look. Are you losing volume? Will this be flattering to your face shape? Are you teetering on the cusp of looking like something from the fungi family? It’s important to keep in mind: once you start snipping, there’s no turning back!

Wetter Is Not Better

Normally I will only cut WET hair. However, with bangs, it is easier to achieve your desired results by cutting hair totally dry. Start by sectioning off the curls you want to trim in front of your face. Depending on your hair texture and thickness, you will want to leave the hair ¼ of an inch LONGER than the length you actually want it to be (understanding the hair will spring up when it is wet and dried again!)

Attention: Tension!

Do NOT pull your hair down before you cut it! We don’t really want tension anywhere in life (unless it’s sexual -- ow, ow!) and especially when cutting your own curls, leave them in their natural curly state. Then separate curls if they are clumped together. This is not going to be a one-fell-swoop-snip! Again, unless you’re going for that crazy-curl-lady look. Then, again, no judgement.

Use Good Scissors, Sisters

This is a big one. Do NOT grab your rusty, gigantic, could-cut-a-two-by-four-in-half scissors. Make the affordable investment in a good pair of shears from your local beauty supply store. Believe me, this step is worth the effort. We’ve all seen those nightmarish D.I.Y. haircut tutorials where the poor thing hacks all her goods clean off with kitchen scissors thick enough to cut a t-bone. You don’t have to be a cautionary tale!

Here We Go!

Ready? Let’s do this. Start with the curl in the middle of your face. Cut at a slight angle, not straight across. This should be the shortest cut. Moving outward toward your cheek bones, continue cutting, leaving each piece slightly longer. Also, don’t forget to breathe, be gentle and take your time. These are your precious curls we’re dealing with after all!

Shrinkage Is Legit

Can’t say this enough: even though you’re cutting dry hair, IT WILL SHRINK. It’s totally ok if your curls are still in your eyes at this point. They will shrink and become shorter. You can always go back and trim again. But just like we learned in Barbie beauty school, once you’ve made the initial cut, you ain’t coming back from it. Be mindful with your snips!

Lights, Camera, Selfie

So there you have it! It doesn’t have to be curly science. Just follow my lead and soon enough you’ll be the curl inspiration for the next babe pondering that age old question: “should I cut my bangs?” The answer is: totally. Just D.I.R. (do it RIGHT!)

Thanks for listening and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for my next tutorial… now that you can see clearly again. Much curly love to you all!

Don'T don't hi girlfriend it's a lot of veteran hairstylist salon, owner and curly hair expert and I'm here to teach you how to cut curly bangs at home. Rule number one! Don'T do it, but if you're stranded deserted on an island somewhere for months at a time - and you don't have access to great salon who specializes in cutting curls or you live in a pineapple under the sea or if you have some sort of really great excuse. That you are in such an emergency that you need to pull out scissors and cut your own hair. I'M going to show you the safest way to do it. Rule number two: you can only do this once if you keep cutting your own hair you're in for a world of hurt, so one time, one time only that's not two ones. One, Oh baby is the other rule number one. So I'm gon na show you guys how to do it. I look terrible with curly bangs, but I just watched some horrifying YouTube videos with girls, cutting bangs with all sorts of gadgets and giving a bunch of bad advice, and it actually came out looking okay at the end - and I thought, oh, my god, people are actually Gon na do this in things that they're gon na be okay with trying this, and it's not gon na turn out that way, don't cut your hair with kitchen scissors might looks okay for a minute, but you're literally giving yourself split ends right then, when you cut That so the next day, when you realize what you've done and your curls spring up shorter than you realize, you're also gon na have split ends, so you'll need them cut again immediately, so make sure you at least go to the beauty, supply store and get. You know even a $ 30 pair of shears that someone might use if they were going to beauty school, to cut mannequin hair or something something decent. That'S good enough for your one-time, curly, bang haircut and I also know there are some people that live in areas that they just don't have any salons that specialize and curl, and sometimes it can be scary or going to a hairstylist. Who knows nothing about curl and you might want to take your curl, take a bangs into your own hands. So I'm gon na give you the do's and don'ts hi. I was just watching what adults that I just watched was pulling their hair like this and then just coming up, it's horrifying to me to watch these videos of people that are not air stylist, just hacking away at their hair. I think she thought it turned out. Ok too, but it was not look, not leaving any names, but it was a lot of people watched it. So I thought wow are a lot of people actually doing this, because there are probably a lot of people crying right now. Oh, we already determined that I will not look good with curls by using these little clips pulling my hair up into place. You can use bobby pins to do that too, but that's a good way to find out if you'll look good with curls put them all back Wow, but first determine if you have the right phase shape for curly bangs. These are my short little curly bangs. I do not. I don't like the mullet looks like my hair, so I have flat spots here. I don't get enough body and I'm definitely not willing to cut my bags all the way back to here, so that then I can have a big pouf up here and look like a or a mushroom something that's a good way to look just kind of. Let yourself see if you look good, it is like up there, so I'm just going to do a longer version so that I won't have to wait so long for them to grow out plus the short ones really do. Look terrible on me and I have fine hair. I want to keep as much of all you as I can with my curls here. I want these perlier parts to lay on top of the flat spots underneath, so I don't want to cut any of that hair and I'm not going to go crazy about making sure I have a perfectly even section, because I actually like it better. If my hair is, it doesn't have any harsh lines in it, but I do want to keep coming. You know, keep the hair coming from pretty much all the same place see how that is not even at all. That will be really hard to manage say if I want to put my hair up or something so you do want to get sort of a straight line there. This, as you can see, is pretty sparse. It'S not gon na leave a lot of things. So I'd have like this mini. I think if I got them, this Supervision wouldn't really do much. So I'm gon na start with this much and I'm doing them dry. Normally I do all haircuts wet, but not thanks keep in mind, even though my hair is already dry, my hair's fine, so it won't spring up a ton, but this hair that I'm about to cut off still weighs something right. So, if you imagine I'm taking this ah, this is gon na bring up it's already dry. It'S already got styling product in it and it's already dried in place. So it's not going to spring up right now, it's going to spring up when I get it wet and then it coils back up again - and I put my product in and restyle it, but right now the product is in it kind of holding it in place. But when I cut it, it's not going to spring out I'll show you guys that too. So you want to leave it at least from my hair type, which is fine a quarter of an inch longer than you want them to be, and you want to cut them without any tension, so you don't pull them and got them. Oh, you leave them in place. I like to separate it a little bit so that I'm getting more pieces cut, because my curls do clump pretty well together and then cut them individually. It'S just not gon na look good. When it's done. I saw somebody else with like kitchen scissors. She literally took her hair and pulled a huge section. She had like this and was just like, so you want to go in and cut with very sharp shears each individual pearl for fine hair, a quarter of an inch longer than you want it to be after you wash it. If you have thick hair, it's gon na shrink up even more the tighter the curl is the longer you want it to be. You can always cut more off. You can't so err on the side of link to always this individual one, I'm going to use as a guide in the very center, and I like to cut curls barely in large clumps at an angle. I'M just going to cut that off and then that's going to shrink up even more than that and I'm gon na lengthen them as I go out. So then I just take this and, like I said it doesn't all have to be even it's better. There'S a little bit of texture, you don't want to cut pearl straight point cut them this way, just go down a little bit notice, I'm not putting any tension, I'm not pulling the curl at all. What do they get it wet? It'S not all gon na be even anyway they're gon na this one might decide that it wants to curl back in with this one. I'M constantly gon na have to keep them separated, but - and I always wear my hair pull outside, but for the most part that is about it so check out these bags. Shrinkage is, this is why we don't cut curl dry, there's a misconception that if you cut the pearl when it's dry, it won't shrink up anymore and, as you can see, that's not true that shows you the dangers of cutting curls dry. Kayli Elit: So excited to try this , i have thin and fine curly hair. For years i straightened and then recurled my hair, then i moved to Shenzhen China! The weather is very humid and my styled hair just did not last 20 min! I have always been hairdresser aversed. Coming from South Africa i have been to many stylists who just dont understand curls, thwy always removed way to much length which took me forever to grow and would have me crying once i washed my blow dried hair to reveal how much difference the length made with curls. I also have had some horror experiences with salon colourists! I put in alot of research and began doing my own hair which has been a blessing. Living in china where communication is a problem and stylists are used to thick straight hair, videos like yours have helped me avoid more tears but still make choices about my hair in an informed and cautious way . Thanks again for the help !

Jana Gilbert: I have a friend who has really beautiful curls who ALWAYS cuts her own hair. I mean, I used to shave parts of her hair when she would have it as a curly mohawk of sorts, but even when her hair was maybe shoulder length she'd still cut it her self. But yeah. There's no way at this point that I can afford to go to a salon that can cut curly hair. They charge anywhere between $80-100 for a deva cut. Too expensive for me. So I've gotta do it myself too. And that includes cutting length + trying to layer pray for me yall haha

Alanna York: Thanks guys! Lots more coming soon! Including how to blend your bangs as you grow them out. ‍♀️

sakanade12: I have exactly the same curl type as you, and when i try to see what I would look like with bangs, I'm always so disappointed to see suck a mess on my forehead haha Great video by the way!

Debi Gimeno: You look fabulous with the bangs! Thank you for this video. Really good information.

Aislinn K: You look great with bangs!

H L: i have the exact same hair as you but can i cut a thinner amount of bangs because i’m scared if i cut as much as you did my hair will look super thin cuz i don’t have much. i don’t want to lose all of my fullness to create the bangs instead i want keep the bangs light and wispy!

miss42310: Thanks for this will attempt...no ones gonna see me now anyway

Natalie Raffino: I think you look good...better than side path!

Gee Carter: Are there any salons near me that cut curly hair. Control chaos stylists.

moonie: my excuse i’m too poor for a hair cut aha
