Steps:

1. Set up the sewing machine.

Single Needle or Double needle- Set stitch to zig zag. Stitch tension between 8 and 9. Stitch width set at 2. Stitch length set at .5. Triple Needle- Set stitch to straight. Tension set between 7 and 9. Stitch width won't matter. Stitch length set at .5.

2. Thread the machine. Use extra bobbins if you are using a double or triple needle.

3. Place masking tape sticky side up, with the sides folded under to hold it to the work surface. Place 2 strips parallel with an inch gap.

4. Spread the bulk hair across the tape evenly.

5. Saturate the hair with hairspray.

6. Allow hair to dry and then apply a second layer of tape over the first.

7. Cut off the excess edges of the tape.

8. Load the hair into the sewing machine and sew in the gap between the tape.

9. Flip the hair, and do another pass right above the previous stitch.

10. Repeat 4 more times with a single needle, once more with a double, and you are done with a triple needle.

11. Place the cardstock in between the pieces of tape.

12. Use a flat Iron or a regular iron to crease the top into a fold.

13. Load back into the machine and create the top stitch.

14. Remove the masking tape.

15. Apply nail glue to the ends of the weft to ensure they will not unravel.

16. Allow to dry and then cut away the tails.

17. Install.

To create wefted hair, there's a few things that you'll need. You'll need hair scissors two inch masking tape, nail glue the liquid kind, not the gel kind card stock, which can be a postcard or a manilla. Folder comb, extra-hold hairspray, a flat iron or a regular household iron, a sewing machine and thread that corresponds to your hair color.. Let'S take a look at setting up your machine. If you're going to be creating wefts on a regular basis, you may want to consider investing in a double or a triple needle.. A single needle requires four passes over the extension hair to create a single weft, whereas a double only requires two passes and a triple needle only requires one., So it can cut down on the amount of work required significantly.. There are different machine settings that are associated with each needle., Your machine settings for a single and a double needle are going to be the same.. You want to make sure that your stitch selector is set to'Zigzag ,', that your stitch tension is between eight and nine. That your stitch width is about a two and that your stitch length is about a .5 For a triple needle. The settings are a little bit different.. You are going to make sure that you are on straight stitch only so that's usually a setting number one.. Your tension is going to be somewhere between seven and nine. Your stitch width won't matter because it's a straight stitch and your stitch length should still be the same at .5 For your single needle you'll thread your machine just like normal. For your double and your triples. You'Ll, wind extra bobbins and you'll use those to thread your machine.. Now, let's take a look at the hair. To keep our hair orderly, we're using masking tape. We're going to be placing this sticky side up folding the ends under so they grip the table. We're placing two strips side-by-side with a tiny gap in the middle.. The next step is to spread the hair., Because this is human hair, we're not going to be folding it in half.. We'Re only going to be doing a slight fold from the top. Take care to spread your hair evenly, because this will be your entire weft's thickness.. The next step is to make the hair stiffer so that it's easier to work with., So we're just going to saturate it with hairspray.. If your hair moves at all, you can use a comb and push it back into place., Be sure to let your hair dry thoroughly and then you're ready to apply your top tape.. You can use thinner tape in a pinch, but the two inch tape helps hold the most amount of hair possible while you're doing the stitches. Press these together, so that they're tight.. The next step is to cut your edges. And now you're ready to begin your sewing. Load, the hair into your machine., I'm using a single needle so I'll be doing a four pass stitch. Once you reach the end, you're ready to flip and do another pass. And Reload it into the machine. Trying to stay right above my previous stitch., Holding the tail and begin sewing. Once we've flipped and done our second stitch. This completes our first pass. Because we've used a single needle, we'll need to repeat this three more times.. If you've chosen to use a double needle you'll, repeat it one more time and if you've used a triple needle you're done., So let's keep moving.. We have three more times. With your binding stitching in place. Now it's time to create the fold., So you're going to place your cardstock in between your pieces of masking tape and use a flat iron or an iron to press that flat. Press the seam until your weft is nice and flat. Next you're ready to do your Top stitching to hold that in place., So we're just going to load that back into the machine. And do a couple passes. With your stitches, complete it's now time to remove your masking tape.. The next step is to apply your nail glue to secure your ends., So we're just going to add a drop of glue. Wait til that dries and then cut away your tails. Here you have your completed weft, ready for installation

xsullengirlx: AMAZING, I searched high and low on how to do this before I came across your video, it's the best source of information anywhere online, seriously! I recently cut over 20" off my hair and have days I miss it - luckily I kept the hair, so I am going to try it! Weird coincidence, I live in the same city where it says your shop is located, must have been fate ;) thank you so much!!

Patty Meola: Thank you so much for this informative video. Virgin hair can be quite expensive, and I hate to waste anything so I am always looking for creative ways to get more for less. I had purchased 22" premade wefts thinking I wanted hair that long, but I found myself cutting the length into a 10" layered hair cut. I've wondered what I could do with the remaining hair I'd cut as I could never just throw it away. After I watched your video, I made new wefts with the remaining length for a future custom hair piece, and I am so thankful to you for helping me achieve this with your very informative video. By the way, I sealed both sides of each weft after I sewed them with Weft Sealer purchased at Sally Beauty Supply in lieu of nail glue, and there has been no shedding of the wefts whatsoever. Thank you again!

Terri: love this video! I have a question about step 13... after you ironed a crease, where did you sew for the top stitch? right over of the weav? or above it?

Carol Shaw: This is a really useful tutorial! Thank you for making and post it.I have some hair that I wore as woven in hair extensions when I was growing my hair out. I've held onto it and was wondering how I might be able to reuse it. Now I have a way. Some of the pieces of hair are shorter and I'm wondering if the turnover edge needs to be 2 inches as you have shown of if it can be shortened to about an inch?

Doctored Locks: Yep, these wefts hold pretty darn well. Fray check works, but if you want to super secure it, use a liquid nail adhesive. It will make your wefts stiffer than fray check, but I use nail glue on manufactured and my sewn wefts just to eliminate any shedding all together.

Sam Dawson: Just wanted to say a huge thanks! I just did this to my old micro ring hair that has been sitting in the bottom of my closet, unused for almost a year & they came out amazeballs <3

Gracie M: Honestly, this is the best video I've seen about hair extensions. I'm so tired of spending hundreds of dollars on low quality hair. Now I can make it EXACTLY how I want them. Thanks for this amazing video.

Gh0st313: Thank you so much for taking your time for making this video because I'm in the process of making my own wefts as we speak so looking forward to making my own wefts thanks you once again

NEAT cosplay: Wow really great tutorial! Thank you for all the detailed instruction in regards to the sewing machine settings - it helped a lot.

trumistry: OMG lady you are amazing! Can not thank you enough for this. I searched online for a vid like this about a year ago...and nothing. So glad i found you. I am re-jigging an old full lace wig and needed a way to weft the hair I cut out, so i can put it back into the wig....thanks so much

saxyroxy736: wow, I wish I would have found this years ago when I shaved my sides, I would have made myself extentions out of my own hair. Awesome video. glad I found you recently, better late than never. Gave me a good idea.

Jane d’Arc: Thanks, this is what I was looking for.I have my own hair cut since a few year and I have kept them and I will use them for extention.great video.

JingYi Chen: Great video! Yours is the first one I found that really shows you how to make a weft from loose hair. I just cut 7 inches off my hair and I want to make clip in bangs with it! Thanks for the very informative video!

Janine Croft: Wow! You made that look so easy! Awesome video

Luzia Silva: Amei maravilhoso obrigada

Norma Sueli Monteiro De Souza: Bom dia, aula espetacular, obrigada!

Lina Åkesson: Thank you for a great tutorial! I have saved my own hair from when I cut off about 40 cm. I am definitely going to try this. :-) Extensions from my own hair will look great hopefully.

Doctored Locks: I believe this one was universal. Honestly, I'm not terribly sure it matters since you aren't sewing through fabric you intend to keep nice. Any of the types should work. If you do find that you have a preference, let me know your thoughts! I'd love to be able to share that info. :)

Katinka Vos: This tutorial is exaclty wat i was looking for. Easy peasy! Thank you!

1cbjack: Great, detailed, to the point vid.  Very well done!

Angela Hartman: I have long thick hair, down to small of my back, and I am really thinking about cutting it short due to how heavy/hot it is and headaches. I am glad I came across your video, as I plan to make wefts out of my own hair for those times that I really miss it being long. Thank you.

Phillipa Kemi: This is amazing!! So well explained too. Just wondering, if I use synthetic/kanekalon hair, how should I secure the fold without heat? And should the fold be in the middle of synthetic hair instead of nearer the end? Thank you so much!

Nikki Vee: BOOM!! This is going to take my business to a new level. I've been wanting more control of the amount/length/color combination of hair in my wigmaking and this is just THE BOMB!! I am just starting to try this process right NOW and already I'm wicked digging it. Thank you for sharing your techniques. It's what I've been waiting and looking for! By the way, I'm obsessed with your look. ✨❤️✨

Medial canthus: Woah, exactly what I'm looking for after going through many videos. Thank you so much!

Vaas Me: Excelente técnica Desde q vi el video llevo años haciendo extensiones d forma facil. Gracias. México.

Diane Henson: This was the best explanation on the web on how to make your own extensions at home. Thank you.

Nadia Beccaria: Thank you so much for this really useful video. I’m hoping to make a few wefts with my own hair but didn’t know how. I will be using a single-needle macchine: could you confirm I would use just the zig-zag stitch to make the weft, or is it a simple straight line stitch? I ask because if it’s a zig zag it looks really small here. With gratitude

Hair Peace Systems: I LOOOOOOOVE your channel!! Thank you so much for sharing your tips and techniques ... much appreciation! ❤️

dm6565: Thanks for so generously sharing your knowledge. Well-done video. I'll look for more of yours.

Lakota505: Wow that was soo easy. Thank you for this.

Stephanie S.: This is just what I was looking for. I have quite a lot of link-type extensions that I no longer have in, but would love to create removable ones for different hairstyles when I'm on the mood. I have two questions about the process, though. After you have ironed the fold, does the top stitch go directly on top of the other stitching? And, do you then trim off the couple of inches of shorter hair that is now heading in the opposite direction? I just want to make sure I understand this before getting started. Thank you so much!

Ashley Freeman: I love how detailed you are with the video. I do think that you should add alittle more to the video. Like a close up on the finished weft, and I would love to see it installed as well.

rainezest: I needed something like and this is just ideal for me as I sew as well :D Thanks!

missmgmnt: Hi! This video has been really helpful, but I'm hitting a snag I hope you can help me with. I got through my first 2 wefts OK - it was a bit of a challenge because my machine doesn't seem to want to sew through hair. I used fabric thread first, but for the second weft I changed to regular thread because the fabric thread started tugging and snagging and stalling the needle. Even with the new thread it took a little doing to get through the second weft I made. The 3rd weft was just impossible. I had to keep unclogging thread from the bobbin casing. Plus the weft wouldn't feed through the feed dog so I'd have to stop before it all bunched up, try to correct it, try again, but it happened time and again. A gentle tug didn't help either. It just jammed right up every time. Has this happened to you? I brought my machine to a repair shop the other day and it's running just fine. It's a quality machine too - I bought it from a sewing store, not a Walmart or anything. I'm not speeding along - I even set the peddle to a slow speed to make sure I don't. I haven't had any problems with this machine doing this before - but I've only ever used fabrics on it. Any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ash M: I have about 120 grams of leftover human hair tape ins that I wore once for prom. I think they'll make a lovely halo piece or clip ins. Thank you for your video, you're absolutely gorgeous.♡

jrgoddess: I wish I could give you two thumbs up! So helpful! You blew my mind!

Micheli Paulus: Que dica perfeita, amei de mais melhor vídeo

Teeny Pet Boutique: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me! Love your videos!!!

ana gilsho: adorei o video..ajudou muita gente....parabéns pelo vídeo...

Catherine Dilworth: This was a very well done video; it's clear to me what I have to do from watching it. I'll be using synthetic hair extension that need to be cut from the top. I'll come back and let you know how it worked out.

Andrea Meléndez: I'm going to try this tomorrow but I feel confident after watching this !!! Thank you so much

Canii peopleperson: You freaking rock!! I am totally going to make my own now. (;

Greg Andrus: Thanks for the video. So informative! <3

Betty Bho: This is the most informative and well done video on this subject there is so well done!

J Heaux: Incredible videos, thank you!

Thryn Slawin: peaked my curiosity. my daughter is interested in extentions, and got to love you tube.a thought, you're the more experienced with this method, but i do know sewing.instead of regular masking tape, there are blue or green painter's tape that leave less residue... an option.then with sewing, there are embroidery stabilzers ( water soluble, tear aways, etc....) that would help when sewing so that the thread wouldn't bunch/knot up. then also with sewing... if you started, say at least 1/2" in from the cut edge in a reverse stitch back to the cut edge... it won't bunch up as much and then when go forward, one could then hand knot the thread tails to be more secure, and they wouldn't be at the most outer edge. another thought, with quilting... when you first start, it's at zero stitch length.... do a few stitches at zero to lock the stich in place....then when you fold the hair over to stich in place, i would maybe start again before the cut/outer edge, go back, then forward, but using a double stich (not a double needle).

pinkysingh007: Wow, this was awesome! Thanks soooo much!

Johanna: This is great, thank you! Do you have any plans to show how to make a human hair scrunchie?

Teeny Pet Boutique: Hello, I am a professional seamstress. I make clothes for children, adults, dogs vests, practically anything one wants. A client contacted me this morning to make exactly what this video in tells. She installs weaves. So she brought me some synthetic hair to practice on and make a welt. I found your video, studied it, followed it and continued to make my very first welt. Your video was so easy to follow!!! My weft turned out perfect. I sent her pics and she was amazed. In the morning she is bringing me real human hair to start doing these for her. She says her bundles come in about 3oz each. Question, what on earth do I charge her to make these wefts for her. I don't want to overcharge or undercharge. So, can you give me an idea how much I should charge her for my sewing skills to make these human hair wefts like in this video? I Googled this answer and found nothing. Thanks for your reply!!!

luciane ventura: Amei o vídeo!!

Versora Hellsing: This is very informative. Thank you. Now I have a way to put the hunk of hair I saved from one of my haircuts to use. Sorry if that sounded wierd or gross.

Moki14: just a few questions for you ^-^. You don't really do a close up of the hair after you've done all 4 passes. Are you spreading them out a little? like 2 close together with a small space for folding and then 2 more? Or are they all sort of on top of each other? Also, does it matter how much "tail" you're leaving to fold over? And finally, is there a way to sew a single weft without that folded edge? (the no sew wefts are the look I'm going for but I know that the sewn ones hold better and I will be reusing them). Thank you!!!

indigoblue4me: I love this video! ❤ A long time ago I let my own hair grow VERY long and b4 I had it cut, I had them make two braids so I could keep it for future use. I still have those braids I can completely follow these instructions, but I don't know what to do next (install???). I'm getting old, and my hair has really thinned out, especially in the front. I would like to make a piece that would be bangs with longer hair coming down the sides of the bangs (to cover my forehead and around my ears, close to my face). Do you have instructions for what to do next? Thanks!

Lavida Loves Coils: Your video was extremely helpful! Thank you!

Adrian Clement: Your technique is fantastic!!!!! I had some synthetic bulk hair so I tried this out on it to practice. I did not use heat to make the crease and it still worked wonderfully thank you so much for sharing. I did use of a piece of paper as the backing as you shared in another video just to keep the hair from getting caught in my feed. I was really amazed at how fast and easy this is to do. Really opens up possibilities for my clients and for me to make a little extra money making these for someone.

Giovanna Rocchi: This is awesome! it was so helpful

Doctored Locks: Yes, we do have a video for that. :) If you do a search on our channel for "customize wig" it should be the first video in the results. Or, you can always find it in the tutorial section on our website, doctoredlocks (dot) com !

easternhair: oh wow, a very nice accurate way of making your own wefts, I love this method as well, I prefer wefting on a single needle, I think its probably much easier to weft on a sinlgle needle machine, I do have double needle, thats sometimes gives me hard time to filling it with thread )) By the way its pretty interesting that you use that sticky tape on the hairs, that looks amazing and makes your wefting look nice. thank U great Video.

Adriana Schmit: Amazing video. The best. Thank you so much

: Hi! I'm trying to preserve my baby's very red hair for an album, and I'm wondering if this type of wefting would hold up for that? And if not, is there anything you could suggest for it?

87stesha: Great video. Thank you! Where did you learn to do this? Did you go to school or are you self taught?

Rayla Cassinat: If I want to make some of my own hair I have from a couple years ago into a clip-on extension, would it be best to add some sort of fabric/ribbon when I fold it so I can then sew it onto clips? This is an awesome tut, thanks!

Breanna Brown: So excited to try this!

Jadag187: thank you for the tips! I'll try this!

Corvus: Might try my hand at making a wig, so this was super helpful!

MyLuxury1st Hair, Pigments, and Apparel: This is great!  Just did a few! Yessss!

Isabela Cabral: perfect teaching!

Tanya Richards: Hello! Great video! How would I go about wefting dog fur that has been clipped off and not brushed? I would really appreciate your input on this?

ella schudnella: OMG, that's perfect!

Sônia Maria Variedades: wonderful this technique, I'm from Brazil, I live in Rio de Janeiro and I've never seen this method, I'll try it later, thank you very much for the video, kisses

myfairladybug: This is so helpful! Not sure if you have it but could you point me to a video of how to create a wig using wefts? I do know how but I really like how you explain the steps

Praise Tunny: Thanks for ur wonderful videos, can you use a regular sewing machine for clothes for hair wefting?

Michelle Harrison PREC*: Good stuff! I cut my daughter's hair, but it wasn't enough to donate to locks of love, but I can definitely make this though!

hi hi: Exactly the thing I was looking for !

Reemara Abdul: thank you really.. omg!! how long i looked up to find something like this.. no similar methods, all about using wefting adhesive tape.. i subscribed to your channel, of cource

SaggiScorp: Awesome! Thank you!

Sharon Slest: Great video!! Thank'you so much for sharing with us this tecnique! But i have an answer, doesn't the hair damage from the tape when we going to remove it? Sorry for the english but I'm italian

Doctored Locks: You are most certainly welcome. Feel free to let me know any other videos that might be helpful if we haven't covered it all for you. :)

Johanna Hendriks: Thank you for this. I'd like to learn to make a small topper for my balding crown.

Christina Drury: Great tutorial! Is there a reason you leave so much excess hair on the top before you fold it over?

Vanisher's Moon: wow this is just what i needed thanx. I'm using a very long length and i was having so much trouble. Didn't think about the hair spray. Now i think this will work for me.

Doctored Locks: Great ideas. I'll pass that along to our editor and see if we can't get a follow up video going. :)

banani: Do they shed much? My hand bound ones don't at all I was just wondering if I could make it faster and easier but with the same quality.

Kelly S: Great video!  I have the same question as PrincessSara. Do you cut off the extra 2 inches of hair that was folded back to prepare for top-stitching? Everything I've read says that using human hair with the cuticle running in the wrong direction will cause a big mess!  Thanks for your help.

J Watley: wow to make wefts wow that was awesome!  really liked this one!! you are so knowledgeable

em j: I made this with a serger because my standard sewing machine is missing a power cable. it turned out pretty well, but I cant seem to keep the seam from unraveling without applying glue all along the seam, which makes them a bit stiff. Do you have any suggestions for preventing the seam from unraveling without glue? I'm a sewing machine noob, as you can see.

AKIYIAKELLY: Wow great video.. I love your videos. I always learn so much :-)

Elizabeth Bristol: What sewing machine do you recommend? And thank you so much!

Lady Lemon: Nice! Great tutorial!

hobomaster100: lol great video, i tried making extentions out of hair i was going to donate (it was too short) and it shed like crazy. now i know how to do it haha. Do you know if this would work with my very basic little purple kiddie sewing machine? I mean, the only settings it has is stitch pattern and it has 2 speeds.

M Cee: best weft diy on youtube...

WITCH OF THE LIGHT: very informative

Вергуд Вергуд: Exellent! Thank you a lot!!! ^_^

PrincessSara: When making a human hair weft, when you are all done, do you just leave the extra few inches of fold over or do you cut it off? I am making my own weft and then I am going to use it to make bangs.

Distressed-Io: I have one question, when you´ve put the cardstock in between, and pressed the hair into a fold with a iron, when you load it back into the machine do you keep the cardstock in between still or do you remove it?

Melissa Keating: can you trim these down after? or is it better to sew them exactly to length?

Syeda Nikki: Lots of love from India Lots of blessings I wish Allah will protect us .. Finally YouTube provided and recommended me a best ever hair extension video thank u ma'am ...

ELSE Music: i have a question... using this method, you will end up with some really short hair mixed in with the long hair (from where you fold it over)... is that normal? do you leave it like that or cut it off?

LovableMeReijing: I love your method but I want to make longer wefts. Whats the longest would you recommend I could start for this??

A. C.: Genial...
