Hey guys, it's Tori here in today's video is all about swimming tips for natural hair. If you are new to my channel, make sure you subscribe and thumbs up this video as well as turn on those notifications. So you know every time I post a new hair video. So if you did not know, I swam competitively for seven years from sixth grade to high school, and I was in the pool six days a week or three to four hours a day and my hair was a thing because I had to figure out how I Could keep some my healthy hair while it was being immersed in chlorine in and out being wet dry and everything and all of that stuff. So I'm going to share with you all of my tips, whether you are just going to the pool the summer or the beach, where you are a swimmer like I am. These tips will help you. So the first thing like the thing that helps the most, is, if you get a protective style, so for me I would get braids or twists for about two months. I swim from like September to February and then March through the summer. So I was really getting on and off with the braids, but if you're competitive swimmer one thing is, you have to wear a swim cap and sometimes the braids don't fit under that. So make sure when you get a style, you can get thinner, braids or some type of style that is not chunky or like box braids or anything because that probably won't fit under your cap. So but if you're just going to beach vacation yeah get some braids. Whether any type of braids or twists, I'm also when you're swimming, think about your edges, because, if you're getting smaller, braids and you're, also wearing a swim cap, that's putting a lot of stress on your edges. So also maybe get larger ones near your edges. And then you can have a smaller one, some other places and discuss that with whoever is doing your hair just so they know what you want, if you don't have time or money to get braids or twists done with hair extensions. Just maybe use some french braids. Do two strand twists just something so that your hair is not out while you're swimming or in a ponytail. That is never fun when it comes to detangling or like getting your hair back to a wearable state. So definitely do something before you get your hair and that water and while you're getting your hair in that style, definitely make sure you have some type of conditioner on your hair. My favorite is shea butter. Shea butter was a great protectant for my hair once swimming, especially if I didn't have braids at the moment. So I would put a ton of shea butter in my hair and then do some French braids or twists, and then I would swim or whatever. And I would come out and my hair wouldn't even smell, like chlorine, because the shea butter put like a whole protective barrier over my hair. Basically, if you don't know where to get shea butter or you want to use the one that I use. Look in the description box by going to all of the hair products I use so when I'm talking about conditioners and all that stuff, like all of that, is in that link in the description box. So, in addition to adding shea butter make sure that if you really didn't have time to get a style down, you're just throwing your hair in a ponytail or something make sure you use scrunchies, not hair ties, because even though they have the Altos hair ties, there's Still a good chance that your hair is going to get tangled in it while it's wet and you don't want any breakage while you're just putting your hair up. So a scrunchie will help eliminate that breakage that a hair tie might cause you can get these anywhere and they're. Also in the link, that's in the description box, if you want to just order a couple of those next, you want to think about when you get out of the pool. So when I got off the pool, I would rinse out my hair whether it was in braids whether it was natural with nothing just make sure you rinse out the chlorine. Then you want to do a quick wash with shampoo just to get the chlorine off of your hair a little bit more. When I was filming everyday, I might have used shampoo once every two days or three days. Just so, I didn't really kill my hair, but you must use conditioner. So what I suggest is you get a cheap conditioner like a really large bottle, especially if you're a competitive, swimmer and just drench your hair in that stuff girl, because your hair is really dry. Even though it's wet all the time the to stripping your hair of oils and the things that needs to like not break off, so that's how you're going to stop your hair from breaking off if they're swimming a lot so make sure after you rinse do a Little bit of shampoo on your scalp you're, putting a ton of conditioner on your hair and then you are letting it dry you're putting it back in twist. If you have braids, I would put conditioner over my braids, even though that causes frizz you're already in the water. So a little bit more frizz isn't going to hurt you, especially if it's protecting your hair so make sure you have that conditioner and on top of your conditioner you can add a oil to seal in the moisture. I like coconut oil, olive oil. I used to mix a ton of oils if you don't know what will to get that link in the description box has some good oils to start out with, and I also wanted to end this video with a couple of this random tips for swimmers, competitive swimmers Because I know a lot of you have been commenting on my videos, so swim caps make sure you get the extra large swim caps and you can use a double cap. So I have cute apps this in case one ripped while trying to put it over the braids, which happened. A lot also make sure your goggles are adjusted correctly, because you will break a lot of goggles with natural hair, just because your hair is just big so make sure you have backup, goggles, backup, swim cap and your swim bag make sure you have your conditioner. You have scrunchies, you have extras. Also. I forgot about this dry, your hair with a t-shirt, not a towel. The fibers in a towel will cause breakage on your natural hair, a t-shirt it's a little bit more smoother, so that will help prevent further breakage. That is a big one: make sure that you try your hair with a t-shirt, not a towel. So even if you have braids just use a t-shirt so have extra t-shirts in your bag for when you're drying, your hair make sure you let your hair dry completely. So I'll just leave it in a towel, but also, if you're swimming during the winter time, you will have to have like a hat one or something so make sure you don't leave your hat on forever, like I would go home like and just like leave all My stuff on, but make sure you give your hair a chance to dry. So if you have any questions about swimming or if you try any of these out and enjoyed them, leave a comment below and of course make sure you subscribe to my channel. If you enjoyed this video, so I thank you guys so much for watching. You can check out my other natural hair videos up here and I'll talk to you guys later bye,

Stephie F: Omg thanks the lord! It's so hard to find competitive natural hair girls on yt!! Thanks for the video JOI!

Paige Rachel Winikoff: Awesome video - thanks so much for the tips. Just took a few months off swim team for my 8 year old daughter because I thought it was impossible with long natural hair but she misses it soooo much and I think we can pull it off without too much damage :) We just have to be careful and take extra steps every single day to protect the locks!

Wanda Santillo: Could you make more natural hair videos pertaining to swimming? When you were swimming every single day did you wash your hair every single day? Did you skip days using shampoo and just use the water?

LevviTalk: This is gold! So hard to find natural hair people who swim on the Internet. Thanks for sharing!

dillon lotte: Thank you so much for doing this video! Not many natural hair youtubers do videos for swimmers. I swam in high school for two years and will be swimming in college. My first year of swim I had no idea how to care of my hair and I styled it almost everyday. Now I have it in faux locs crochet and will continue to wear it like this during the season.

Mariah Mills: Love this! I swam competitively for 16 years and never knew what to do with my hair smh. I fell off cause of school, Covid, natural hair journey. But now I’m getting back to swimming for exercise and as a hobby soo this is very helpful!

The Ultimate Foodie: Thank you for this video! I’m a Black Queen that recently signed up for beginners swim lessons. These tips are essential

4Knewt: So ENCOURAGING! moved to tears because we live in AZ and the water itself is hard on our hair and my daughter enjoys the pool. Fought so hard against breakage by adding a filter for washing her hair but didn't want to steal her joy of the pool all summer. THANK YOU

Afua Mfodwo: Hey Joi I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I really love it. From this video and your channel I've noticed we have soo much in common . I swim competitively and have for so many years I also have natural hair and I plan on doing journalism in college when I apply this year. Sorry for this long rant but really love your channel and keep doing you

Waugh Jiu-Jitsu: Thanks so much for this video! I have been scouring YouTube for a video of how to protect 4C natural hair when swimming that was made by someone who actually knew how to swim.

Katherine Rosner: I do the same things for competitive diving (I have 3a/3b hair that’s very prone to tangling and super dry low porosity). Conditioner and braids are literally the only things keeping my hair on my head

M. I.: Last summer I went swimming every day for 2-5 hours a day and my hair was always in protective styles. When it wasn’t, I put it into an Afro puff ❤️

THE EYE OF SHEYE: I’m currently taking my sew-in out because I have swim practice and a meet this week and this helped a lot! thanks! ❤️

shanakai02: Thanks so much for this! My daughter is 8 and swims competitively and the cornrow braids are starting to take me edges out. Giving her break from the braids to try two strand twists.

Bianca Rose: Such great tips!!! I'm putting my 4yo daughter in swim lessons this summer and was searching for tips! Qs: do you suggest I take her braids out before washing everyday? If so, I'll do far fewer braids, and opt for corn rows for her two weeks of daily lessons. Also, do you think a co-wash, instead of a shampoo is good enough to wash our clourine? I'm torn between stripping her hair of moisture, but also assuring i wash the pool chemicals out fully.

Courtney Marks: Thank you for the tips. My 7 year old daughter, 4c thick shoulder blade length hair, has been swimming 2x a week for about 6 months now. I am also trying to help her hair recover from heat damage. I took her get her hair done as a treat, and the flat iron ruined several spots. Not all over her hair, but in 4 spots. In fact I cut about 4 inches of in one small area because it was so damaged it started breaking. Do you have any so dial tips for that? I've noticed her hair is very dry now, I assume from the swimming. I've been wetting her hair before swim, and she uses a cap. When we get home, I wash her hair with shampoo, apply a leave in then an oil. I've also been leaving her hair in braids. But it seems the shampooing in braids is adding to the tangles. ??? Finally I wash and deep condition every other week. Do you have any good recommendations for a good leave in conditioner and deep conditioner? I don't feel like it's working.

YankeeTigerGirl17: Omg thank you!! I swam competitively thru HS and struggled non stop with my hair, to the point that I quit mainly b/c I didn’t want to deal with my hair anymore. My parents were adamant about my washing my hair immed after the pool, and my hair was always dry, as you can imagine. Just resumed swimming regularly through the Masters’ prog and, I will incorporate drying my hair with a t-shirt (in lieu of a towel afterwards) as well as consider a protective style. What are your thoughts on using a swim headband (like those used for ear covers/allegedly to reduce swimmer’s ear) along with a silicone swim cap to protect edges, especially for distance swim?

NYCCgirl1: Omgggg this has really saved my life I'm trying all of these immediately. I normally do soak, Shea, and fench braid because I do triathlons (so not just swimming). What do you do if you exercise often on land (because the build up) and in the water?

Ewanica Marshall: I loved your video, it was very informative. My daughter is a freshman in high school and she is starting competitive swimming. I'm so worried about her 4c hair. It's very thick. Any other suggestions would help. Thanks

Ali Bunkles: I needed this, I just started back swimming 2 or 3 times a week and jogging. These were great tips. Im getting passian twists. Great video

Larissa Davis: Thank you so much for the tips. My young daughter will be undergoing lessons for the next four weeks and I needed some ideas for how to protect her natural hair. Bless you for this!

Sun_E_Rae: I appreciate this video. My daughter currently swims and now is playing water polo. She doesn't take of her hair so I have honestly just kept it braided. She wants to try different styles but sadly it will keep her WP cap from fitting properly. Any suggestions on low maintenance styles for her natural hair? She has 4c

Tracie Walker: thank you, thank you! My daughter swims competitively and the hair has been a struggle. thank you greatly for the tips. I am in hot pursuit of all that you have suggested. this help was invaluable! Please continue to give tips on how you survived swimming daily!

Destiny Onu: Just started swimming lessons! Dread lab has really good/big swimming caps for those with big hair/hairstyles. Thank you for the video Joi

Nilus Williams: Thank you so much! I was so worried about going swimming again now that I have natural hair and this video was so helpful and to the point! Thank you Joi!

Shimmarie Riley: Thanks so much!!!! I'm really worried about my hair and I'm really considering perming my hair as swimming is my main source of exercise and my natural hair is getting me down. Your tips will really help and your hair is beautiful so your tips must work.

Deidra Carroll: Thanks for these tips! Did you/have you ever used a chlorine neutralizer (vitamin C) on your hair? Wondering if that works for naturals?

4Knewt: I'm super grateful for the tips. And I'm praying my daughter's love of the pool will grow into competitive swimming when she sees your video and the other comments of black girls swimming.

Renee11123: Thanks for the video! I'll be getting my scuba diving certification next month and needed a video to see how to care for my 4c hair before and after swimming since it's been a while since I've gone swimming.

Haley Stephenson: the only thing I hate about being a competitive swimmer is when I tell my friends I have a practice they are like oh you have lessons LIKE NO BISH IM RACING PEOPLE !!!! like you wanna go... lol

junkyarddog7500: Thank you for this!!! My 10yr old daughter is in her first year of water polo. Her mom and I are thinking of a braid style the isn't to bulky or to long because of possible pulling. Thank you again

AISHA: Thank you girl!!!! I swim competitively and my hair is a struggle!!

eternalgamer25: One tip that I found out that works for me when it comes to a swim cap. Is to make sure that you wrap your hair with a bandanna or do rag. I’m not gonna lie that’s the only way I personally can keep a swim cap on my hair for an entire work out or practice.

Savannah M: Thanknyou so much for making this I'm a competitive swimmer as will and I like my hair natural but I have a lot of break off. I will try this tip this week and let you know how they worked soon. And thank you for including a alternative for extinctions because my step dad won't let me get them . even after I told them how much I protects my hair when I swim.

Victoria Ajayi: Thanks so much !! I’m a competitive swimmer but I stress so much about my hair .. my hair has been so dry lately because of swimming 6 days a week

Sagine Damas: My 13-yr old started comp swim this summer; will continue in the fall and hopefully thru-out HS. We learned so much via ur YT video. Her edges have suffered because of tight braid extensions; thus seems like it'll have to be french braids, etc per your advice. I have to ask: how do you keep a nice hairdo - where you don't look like you have not combed your hair forever - for the schooldays?

193littlemiss: Joi, Thank you so much! I'm learning to swim and I have natural and recently colour treated hair. There are a handful of YouTube videos about natural afro hair and swimming in chlorine. Will definitely follow the tips.

Kimberly Nesbeth: Didn't the moisturizers make the swimcap slide off? I use silicone Speedo caps

Glittery Blerd: This is so helpful, I'm taking swimming lessons and I needed to look this up.

Chiko Jere: Thanks for such an informative video. How did you manage your skin though? I hate how dry, dark and irritated my skin gets after swimming. Please help!

slhoneypr: Thank you!!! My daughter dives 2-3 days a week so swim caps always come off. What do you recommend for this scenario?

Wanda Santillo: Can you make a video showing what you do before and after you come out of the pool?

Shauna Rowland: Thank you for this video!!! Could you do a vid with more specifics? There are so few out there pertaining to competitive swimmers (versus the occasional protective style for swimming on vacation). Also - your link points to your blog, but I didn’t see any product lists. Can you update? Again- huge thanks!!!

rachelmm05: My baby girl age 7 is on the swim team where we live. Shes in the water 5 days a week for at least an 1 to 1-1/2 hours each time, not including swim meets twice a week and our normal family swim times. I keep her hair in simple cornrow or rope twist styles. I usually wash it once a week but make sure the chorine is rinsed out. Once we are home i make sure to apply a bit of leave in conditioner and oil.

melina jeune: I’m a competitive swimmer and I had very long thick hair. During the season I wore it in a puff and I noticed my hair thinning and shortening. I lost about three to 4 inches of my hair by the end of the season. Unfortunately I found this video too late. Do u know any way I can grow my hair back long and healthy? I wanna continue doing swimming but I don’t want it to get damaged terribly again.

Noodlenado782: I just wanna say Thank You Joi for the blessing that is this video I needed it so much!! ❤

W' La: This was soooo helpful! Thanks for making this video!

Zimbili Sibiya: I'm a beginner swimmer training to join triathlon, so totally appreciate this. Thank you very much.

Gigi212414: TYSM for this!! We are going on a 10 day cruise and I’m dreading doing my 2 girls’ hair each day to prevent it from getting matted after they go swimming

deeptendu chandra: I am a guy with hair fall problems. I'm thinking of using a swim cap but as experienced swimmers say, it doesn't make it completely watertight. I may use something in my hair before putting the cap on but oils can weaken or even melt rubber. Any safe option that won't weaken the cap?

Solelygawa-: Just found this video and thank you so much❤❤❤❤,you explained everything perfectly and felt more comfortable knowing that you're expiercanced

Linda Edwards: I am a huge competitive swimmer thank you for all the tips

Nasira: Thank you! Every other video is just occasional swimming! Bless you woman!

Courtney Wilkerson: Can you post a tutorial for swim hair care? I’m swimming regularly and I definitely want to protect my hair.

kayla: Kaolin clay is the best for removing harsh chemicals like chlorine from your scalp and hair. I used it all the time back in hs

Wanda Santillo: I can’t imagine washing my hair that often and still have hair.. But your hair is so thick and beautiful obviously what you did really works. I will try it because I want to learn how to swim.

Shana Clarke: Jade my daughter swims competitively year round like you did. She is in eight grade and no she loves it but she also really wants to rock her natural hair in a fro or two strand twist other that braids. She will be going to HS next year and I don’t want the hair thing to discourage her. Any advice for her?

Osophine: THANKKK YOUUU I am in the pool everyday. Tho... My hair's really long so even with my natural hair alone, my cap still has trouble staying on properly. When I do use oil, then the cap just slips off. What else can I do when my hair is not in a protective style at the moment?

Everything On A Budget: hey. I love your videos!! How do you care for hair when it is in a protective style, for instance cornrows?

The RCK Channel: If you're natural tho, can't you just let your hair air dry? and when you wash it, can you wash it in its protective style( not braids, but natural)?

Student Nurse: i am just learning to swim and I put my hair in box braids (big mistake) so I am trying to maintain my natural hair. video very helpful.

Wangu Joy: Thanks for the tips. Very helpful.

fae: bro i just started hs swim about a week ago. our practices are everyday from 8.30-10pm, so i don’t even get home until 11pm on school nights. having to wake up at 6.15 for school and only having 10 minutes in the locker room leaves no time for me to care for my hair. this is literally my biggest concern cuz my hair is already dry to begin with and it’s very long and low porosity. dk what to do and it also is not presentable throughout the day lmao. might just get a haircut tbh yeah i’ll do that

Ayana i!: I’m going to the water park in a couple of days and I NEED something to do with my hair so hopefully this will help

Jov Hernandez: what should I do if my swim cap fits perfectly but then it starts coming off as if its to big

J Mason: Hello! I plan to start swimming at the local YMCA in the next couple of weeks. I took a tour of the place today. So you'd rinse hair, shampoo and put a lot on condition on your hair after you got out of the pool. Did you put your hair back into braids and go home to let it dry? I don't want to stay at Y any longer than necessary. Did you do any prep of you hair before you got in the pool? Does a swim cap really help still it does not keep your hair from getting wet? Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to damaged from pool water but I also don't want to spent a lot time with pre- and post pool hair maintenance. Thanks!

Kindra Calypso: I am a lifeguard and swim instructor who swims everyday. It has been a difficult task finding good tips for people who are in chlorinated water for long periods of time. However, I have locs and will probably have to adjust some of the tips. So if anyone who has locs and is a swimmer can help a sister out, please leave a comment. Swimming as a loose natural and making sure my hair stayed moisturized wasn't as difficult as it is now. This was still a helpful video. Thank you.

Tyler Odom: Are you suppose to wash condition and deep condition and apply oil each time you swim with your natural hair ?

Tamika Levels-Hood: My 9 year old daughter is a competitive swimmer and these tips were very helpful. Do you have any pics of styles you would recommend?

Alexandra M.: Thanks for all the tips!

Janelle Neal: Good Lord! Where was this video when I started swimming!?! I have a similar swim background (eight years from 6th grd to college - school and summer teams) and this would have saved me so much time and hair breakage.

Ray: Do you use a lot of conditioner even when you just rinse or only when you use shampoo?

Cina Fitzpatrick: You rock ! Thanks for the info!!

Leila Atumah: I’m a swimmer and I’ve never gotten braids I always wear my hair tied back and have pretty much no Curls but I want to get short braids and I was hoping for maintenance advice there’s literally no black people on either of my swim teams

Djenabou-Fatoumata Camara: Thank you so much for this video . ❤️❤️❤️❤️

the lady Morgana: How can avoid hair breakage from the swimming cap?

Gia Brooks: What about skincare for after and before swimming. Because my skin been getting irritated lately after my long day of swimming.

Stephanie Boydston: How often did you rebraid or retwist? Did you just rinse the hair in a style?

Lois White: Thank you so much for posting this!!

Shakira Lubbe: Thank you for sharing some good content

Adriana Skinner: Do you use a latex or silicone cap and how do you prevent the cap from slipping? My daughter said last time she tried to leave come conditioner in her hair the cap (silicone) kept slipping off

Myah Salazar: Finallyyyyyyyyyy, thank you so much I’m new to swimming and your channel and I love this

Sudha Vish: Hi can you make a video of how to wear swim cap effectively. There are days my days don’t get that much wet but again days where it’s 70% wet. Is there a specific method to wear the silicone caps so that minimal chlorine gets into the hair

deedee: When swimming with braids should you leave it out or tie it? And if there is a hairstyle for your braids, which one?

0g Neknek: I was a competivite swimmer my sophmore year and after the season my hair was damaged and I really want to swim my senior year but my hair and the cap always end up sliding off especially when I dive.
