Scissors over comb for women's cuts

Dry hair cutting technique.

*Giving is hold forever*

We'Re coming to you live from the soft opening of the Cutler times. Are those sore in Soho New York City, we're here with the co all nervous about those two salons and evolving? Now we really get to know her, hear her story and unfortunately we're in this beautiful haircut on her model and plant. Grace jenny obviously started out already and really teaching today, yes, so greases hair was originally in quite a heavy volcko. We'Re going to take in the sides in the back I'm really little tight if you've got heavy equipment. You might ease appeal so right now, I'm starting just a scissor over comb all through the temple area and a c-shape section right down into the knee. I'M going to take that in an early type and my hairdresser is still still work with Julie Indies and yet kind of be that simple, that's gon na be gorgeous. So any tips. If you notice, you start officers over home, which can be a difficult technique for a lot of people. First of all, why not just use the Clipper and blast it off? Okay! Well, for me personally, I love doing scissor of a cone because I'm old school - and I just love the velvety finish or using scissors over comb, because I always finish it off for the texturizing blades, which gives a very much tailored and velvety finish, which I feel You just don't get with clippers and I really want to tailor make it to the shape of the heads. So precisely again, I love Clippers, but for this instance I really wanted to give us soft finish, even though it's gon na be a very strong one itself. Assault feel so good reason. Yes, I want to be really strong by always have some flowers, some movement and keep it completely seamless, so that really gives a softer feel, even though it's a very strong lit time in seconds. You know monkeypod, where you've got this like little wrist action and you kind of see shaping yeah, I'm really working up the nape exactly how Grace's head shape is, so I'm not just going over it like a one foots all like really Taylor, making that to all The bumps on our head company, through we're really working with that shape, they're so important. Just yes, yes, absolutely! I also we should chose awake over it. Yes, because our hair is black very dark, then I definitely use a white coating, so I can see literally every single hair that I'm working with just beautiful, which is disciple resale cool. So if you, if you like, I love her longer comb because I really just feel like I can work easier and just spread it out a lot more. Thank you and then Ellen moly new teaser, a frequent watcher is asking. Do the Lord? Your scissors also help when you do this type of work. I find that it's a personal thing. You know everyone's got different hand sizes, so I can't say: oh yes, you should definitely use five-and-a-half, so it might not work for another person's hands. You'Re very physical. I can see the way that you kind of need. That'S telling me to get some point to get a shot back. Please you come here with your whole body, not touch the fingers necks, but I can see the way that you're, leaving and standing and where doesn't have any questions for Jenny to ten people that use the cohort gear color coins. Although here encyclopedia it's a brand new salon, it's actually just done. The softball today still little details there with you can see the beautiful things base right here, downtown so there's a couple other flagships, so Jenny. What was the idea here in well? This is just an extension of whatever at what is a already amazing brand. I'Ve been with Cutler for 16 years when we had one salon and helps with many others to develop the brands into what it is today. So this was like a natural next step. The our low, so the hotel is a very creative brands and between them and us together too small, but definitely we've you know, got a huge one. It'S so heard of what the medium-sized one Brooklyn and, with this beautiful short hair beautiful face. How do you weren't sure it here for a while? Yes, you were telling the story before they got a little bit of a process that you guys post it all. I shaved it off now, where the process of trying to grow it out, gracefully and here's. I'Ve been fun challenging, but you know I have Jenny who's amazing. So she always Blake keeps me looking cool, so Jenny's, your regular stylist and she gave you a shout out and said: hey. Can you be my model yeah awesome? Alright Jenny looks like you're moving to the second side, so this is for those at home who maybe, who maybe missed what we're doing over there, get a good recount. Yes, the what I'm doing you can see how heavy is over the year is very blunt. So I'm gon na remove all that weights. That'S actually really shaped around the ear again working in a seasick section right down to the mate and then work building up to the week, because I want to keep that top area really quite heavy. So some love coming in for you for your boots: Jenny from Rena Lantos, our good friend in New Jersey, shout-out to Georgia, Roundy, that's a pseudonym for a good friend of ours again that question, and you can never kind of explain this too much, because people are Always wondering why scissor over comb versus Clipper? What'S the benefits here for me personally, I love scissor over comb because it really really Taylor makes up to the shape of the heads and also I use the texturizing place to finish afterwards, which gives a velvety finish. So the gray is a lot softer and - and I just feel like for this look - I want it very strong, but yet soft with a feminine touch - lots of love coming and you're very welcome Susan silver. For this we are in it's kind of a soft opening. Here the branding public salons will Cutler times are lows for the solo and Jenny. Who'S worked with rocking in the cover brand for 16 years is the water here. So if your personal, very much so, are you ready for the kitchen? This is a natural next step for me, because I've worked with Rodney for so long. It was just a natural next step and so far loving every minute general juice can get a great shot of this beautiful, elegant scissor over comb. Someone said you sound like you're from Edinburgh, which is a more posh accent. They say well, I think, because I've lived at my accent is a lot softer, but I think that's a lot to do that been here since 2003, so I naturally subconsciously soften my accent. So people don't have to go one every two minutes, so maybe when you get it right singing from Brooklyn, when I get around a bunch of Brooklyn lots of Locris Israel for calm, we know I said such an important technique for so many things and obviously you Can use Clippers for a lot of things, differences of getting that velvety finish and I think really being able to manipulate the head shape a lot. But you do work with Cooper from time to time. Yeah absolutely, but for this so just felt very strongly that this was a good finish and particularly with Greece's hair is already a very strong hair type. So I really want to soften those ends. I don't want it to feel too jaggedy or to roll, like you. So it makes me be a little less happy on such strong because when you cut so mechanically with the Clipper, it makes the great question coming in from Ashley. Why doubt about working around the ears, any tips for working? Obviously you can. Maybe you can feel like it's a little dangerous with your alcohol anything you do to keep it safe, for example, what I'm doing right now! I just bend the ear over then help the Komen and then that way, you're not getting in the way. So yes, and then that way you can go in and there's gon na be no injury. If you're happy your grace genius actually loved it. Thanks for a great question is if you're watching home questions Jenny's a great educator, she's been a hairdresser or for a minute. I imagine she's been here New York working with cover for 16 years. What about before that? Where did you start off in Scotland? Yes, Glasgow? I worked for Rita Russ, oh, I knew it. Oh awesome, you know when I was alleged. Yeah started their train there who's. Our director there and then you know loved every minute of it, but New York is something that have been calling me for many years so with the best methodology, especially in those days, there were lots of different blades that you guys yes actually yeah yeah. I guess she designed them and they were phenomenal. Wouldn'T she thought that I was absolutely amazing, but, like anything time, moves on we've all learned technique so go to texturize and slightly different manners, but in the end, those days it was like amazing, because everything was so strong and so soon based. So then, suddenly have these stronger, but a lot of movement with them that stayed with me. Always you know, I think you know it's. It'S so beautiful to study all the different methodologies and they kind of come up with your own Italian. So fortunate as I started individual ones, so what you wants to be a cuddler with training staff to New York, if someone wanted to come to you, I can work. You know one of the most procedure salons in town. Well, a Cutler. Our education is really really important to us and you'll have your foundational training. Those time goes on when you do something you get into the classes which are a bit more advanced, then it's gon na be more about teaching different techniques. So then you can come up with your own. It'S not like muster it this way, and this is the only way we really like for everybody to express their own individual, but obviously there's a friend. You know you need to know the key foundations that razor cutting is a huge thing for us as well again, we did have a question about. You know how you're using the head shape to build this up. Like I do when I look, I see the way that spine of the comb is really kind of you come in and you see shape and ride it out. If you explain that lots of people are loving the shape and would love to, you know understand how you're creating it well, and I will so. I stand at the side a little bit because I really wanted to check in all the time how to do that. You know not to overly simplify it, but you're kind of looking for more of a 45 degree angle of weight being built absolutely because the graduation absolutely because there's quite a lot of layering through the top. And I want to give the impression that it's actually more one length so by building this up, it's gon na give more of a one right here on the top area, so even with a scissor over comb, you could cut wider than this. If you ask for one absolutely, i'm really ever elevate tonight, because i want to build up into weight that isn't necessarily there just might, but it will be by the arrows gon na move just a little bit if you're watching from home we'd love your questions again. The question about clippers Jenny loves first, but in this case you wanted a more velvety texture, which makes sense on this really kind of pokey Asian hair, which upheld the scissor, would give a softer texture. And then you mentioned, you can go back into the texturizing shear to kind of move on absolutely once I've finished here, I'm gon na bring this in and then finish the education and sharing education. We use these Facebook lives multiple times a week. To connect with the whole salon is open for three days in and Renee's room absolutely and we've been jam-packed. All our clients are loving it and yeah. It'S a real okay, yeah tell us why you switched to a different color, so I really want to get this hairline on very tight, and I love the flexibility of this comb. It'S so bendy, which I feel like is imperative when you're going through this back Harry. I do not want a stiff comb on to it very bendy, so I can really maneuver around the shape of the neap, so it allows you to get closer. It works really. As close as I like. You know, I could really take that right off. If I wanted to, but I just want to again build up, but I'm just really refining this Snape area, one of my great friends and mentors is watching mr. Kirk keep telling show James Han how she holds the calm, its teach as many hairdressers as possible, who Kind of do the monkey paw see, everybody did see, shapes or just kind of like, like this supposed rotation tips rather than your whole long. So you know it's the subtle things that make a haircut great yeah Kurt says brilliant. I knew you would love that. I feel very honored. Thank you. Yeah now, just a general question from Jenna Lauren. What kind of hair types do you recommend for scissor over comb? Were there any hair types you don't like scissor over comb on? No, I mean really anything you adapt to each texture, whether you go in tighter, a softer texture, eyes, more or less any any texture can work. You'Ve just got to tailor it to that texture just nicely. Do you find sometimes very fine blonde hair on pale skin? Can be challenging it's kind of for sure I mean I'm 20 years and then I feel like nothing really. You know. Yes, it's challenging. You just have to be extra, concentrating lots of comments about how attractive you are as well. Jenny didn't say there they're beautiful. She doesn't hurt in the beauty business to be beautiful, beautiful model, beautiful hairdresser and then there's the okay. So why at this age, do you feel like it's time to kind of switch into there, because I've really taken it as tight as I want to through the night? Now we really wanted to just take this excess hair off and then I'll find Sheena again with the Barbican. We did have some questions about what type of scissor you're using, I think that's a category always car is. Is that not your favorite? Some species do V, Williams is asking about your new salon. Is it fully staffed yeah and yes, that you know we're always open to them? You know want to give anybody an opportunity. Really, you know would never say no, so you can get in contact. So anybody out there that interested in working in New York salon the flagship is Cutler in Soho, a lot of salon and there's a couple others around New York and now this is a brand new location where Rodman has partnered with Jenny ball with one of his Longtime stylists to open this pool intimate space about a 10 share of space in the hotel in soho Tabaka. If anyone thinks you're still in contact them, you can, they do absolutely always open. The door took well Andrew Chung, who says that you are so tractable, so he did say that I was handsome North Korea lots of love coming in in terms of viewers at your dish, joining us we're here at Jenny quality. This is her beautiful model of grace working on. You know, why did you choose to do the whole thing drop? I love cut, misses or looking dry, because I really feel I can see exactly how the hair is moving. I feel like when it's really wet. I mean maybe when it's even damp as well, but if it's wet, I really feel like. You can't see the movement of the hair. I want to see immediately how the hair is reacting, so I can adapt to any seconds and especially a scissor over comb when it's wet and it kind of sticks together. Sometimes I find it get shorter than I want absolutely. This will give it the true finish that I want immediately there's a great question from Lara Paris. How do you choose the type of neckline that you want to create in a shape like this? I always wanted to follow what the natural hair line is doing and also how it comes down into her nape area. Very like I can see exactly how the way it works. Yours perfect. I just want to fine-tune that so it's mimicking what it wants to do. Naturally, so in this case just tapering or petering out, and rather than saying we're gon na square it off or round it all yeah, I will never Square over and off anything. I always go with a natural finish. Just because that's why my preferred way yeah right! It'S it's a taste level kind of thing. Isn'T it do you find? Sometimes you have to explain that you, maybe with male clients who are used to saying: can you square it off around and off work yeah and I think they're always pleasantly surprised when they see the finish they're like? Oh, my god that looks really good and naturally I was like yeah because I wan na you don't look like a haircut in your head. You want it to enhance you, and you know when I was first learning it. The way it was explained to me as well is that it will grow in better, like your cat, some liquid, something artificial and it looks good for a day, yeah and then the next day you've got stuff growing all around it. Where, if you just tape it all the way out into the skin, then that hair over the next 30 days will grow inconsistent. Absolutely, let's elope Josefin tones is asking about texturizing Sherry's that she asked for you. If you use them so perfect Cheers so the nice beautiful graduated shape just petered out on the is a high grade sort of ALC, a nap and now switching to the texturising, scissor or shear or whatever your preferred terminus. Yes, so I'm going to use the textures engineer here again, I'm going to start off with the sides work in the c-shaped section right going to the need from both sides and then work the V up and over to the back area. Do you ever just start off with the texturising scissor a share yeah if the hair is fine enough? Quite possibly, I've done Phil haircuts with Justin sex toys and shear yeah yeah. So I'm really just finessing this and removing weight at the same time, but really softly. Okay, so this particular texturizer tell us a little bit looks like a lots of teeth yeah. This is the only one nine years and I just used it in different ways, and I love that it's so close together the teeth and then the ridges on the top. Slightly possesses a real velvety finish, but then I'll use this as slicing as well, if necessary. So, yes, we'll have to graduate for Christmas awesome. Well, please invite us we'd love to ten you're coming through kind of on a different angle. Is that to look right? Yes, I'm just coming in for the scissor of a cone part, but then noticing it's still quite heavy in here, which I wanted to just loosen up just a little bit more. It seems like you're going a little bit deeper like yeah. It wasn't just about the ends there, yeah, no, no just a little bit deeper unnecessary here, because this was so heavy. It'S a giving it lots of love for your work, Jenny, nothing but beautiful comments about how graceful you work and just beautiful work and again, I think you know a trained eye can can see and scissor over comb. Everything, like you know I, at certain times when I've worked as an education director in different salons. When someone would come in who's already experienced and say hey, I don't need any more training, I'm ready to go on the floor. Usually the first thing I would say: okay, let's see it really tight sister with a comb because because actually hairdressers could spend - and it may be - you know wonder if he's ever had that experience, I think a lot of people have it the difference between good and Great or bad and good, that's a big deal. Beautiful and again, you know not a wasted movement in anything that you did here, obviously you're still very busy behind the chair, and I can see that your economy of movement in motion here to get things right. Like you did waste it, sometimes you know people just on the phone they kind of dabble in places and they jump around and hear every stroke was purposeful. Love that it's very much a method that I was followed working from the temple gangs that make into a V and then working the way up to remove that week. So you start always on the temples all these or tentacles, but why you starting dependence, create where you really balanced, like example, Grace's hair? I wanted to see what's gon na, have this heavyweight. You know if this was already perfect. I might start sit at the back. I'M nine times out of ten boys that were temple to create the guides and the same on the other side and then work into that V. Then you've got the perfect guideline: it's a secret way, beautiful great tip, they're awesome, so starting in the temple in the shape, and now it looks like you teach back to just a regular she of scissors just finessing. Just these little areas were right round. Here became just petering out on the sideburn area right out into a skin, so I'm going to work through the top nine okay, so I'm going at home. This is the party of the waiting for got this beautiful sister over comment: JD balding! We come over here over Cutler crimes are low into the top questions about hair, texture and density waves of work. Really. This is a great time to ask Jenny. What are you be sharing on the top killer? Well, I'm just looking to see and I what we have left because there's a lot of layers in here. I want to give the impression that it's more one length so to do that, I'm going to strengthen actually through the fringe area and then just rang the ears here, I'm going to just tailor it a little bit more around here. I love that we have that undercut over here cuz then this can just drop down. You still have a sense of strength. Now grace you had buzzed your hair a while ago, you'd be growing it out, keep on getting these undercuts and kind of letting the top throw away his health. Yes, it's working for you! Yes, so I don't get like a green to it right, because the bottom you know takes a while for that top to grow in the bottom can get longer, yeah I'll. Never let you have a mullet grace. No, unless you want one Melissa, great cool, hot, not bad eggs are in right now, a lot of love coming in still just for the beautiful technique and everyone learning so much, and just so thankful for this Sunday, education so coming into the fringe. Bang pony banger, rooney's friends yeah, so I'm just strengthening this off. It was just a little too textured for me for this look. So, although I went to blunt, I want a soft blunt, so I'm just gently point cutting through that area who I choose we're coming because I don't want it. I want to keep it a soft one. I don't want to cut it straight across because it's too harsh for her - it's not too harsh, but I just choose that I don't want it straight cause when I still have a flow and movement throughout the haircut. Even that's gon na be very strong. Any tips on point cutting, I know. Sometimes people are afraid they would cut themselves and any tips on the angle of the scissor or anything at all about point cutting, usually with point cutting just go in just coming in at an angle. Very, very slightly. You know it's gon na again, it's different with all kind of hair, textures and sometimes coming in more an angle, sometimes two across it just depends for this, I'm coming in more straight on to keep it a little bit more. On the blunt side, there definitely one that sort of one of the fuel lane employments love the term soft ones, that's a good one. I feel like it just says. All really I mean it is in a nutshell at site, because you're still pointing pretty closely together. That'S not like you're chunking, it out never chopping it in any way, and you know the idea of the line doesn't have to be kind of brought forward a little bit square so that it falls back like. What'S your now, I'm trying to keep it as close to her face as possible, so very little elevation. Yes, because, like I said, I do want it to have a blunt feel, but I wanted to have a softness to it and again after you finished with the outline there, you'll be working internally or you're. Just gon na work around the perimeter kind of work by the friend sir, like right, reins here at the sides here I love how it's coming down, but I'm gon na just again square off a little bit, but in a soft way. Yes, so again it comes down in a point here which totally works as well, but I want it to be a little bit more square but again in a soft blunt manner, so changing a little bit over the sideburn area, yeah cuz. I want to show that undercut a little bit cuz. I think that's really isn't the finished look. Also so guy's enormous. You have any questions for her. Jenny would love to hear that she's really a lot today with this kind of technique, though you had mentioned earlier. It'S kind of like a nineteen supermodel like you, visualize, explain to us what what you're seeing there well, you know I'm seeing a lot of this happening, there's so much 90s coming back and fashion and in hair, and especially Linda Evangelista was notoriously known for having these Different kind of looks, but she did always kind of versions. There'S more hair color that changed always had this top-heavy can a crop idear. So I just want to make it a bit more of like a 2018 version and adding things like undercutting a little deeper and taking removing it off the way over still keeping that yeah it does, and it's I think it's really really sexy. Actually, if it's done in a certain way, it doesn't have to be harsh and masculine. Looking that's why all these little touches, I think, looks so beautiful. I mean Greece's stunning as is and her neck and our head shape. I just think is amazing that the suits are so well there's like little touches like that with the scissor of the Komen beyond the cot. You know, you know. One of the words that I was like you know is kind of a fear so brave, and it shows that you know women can have strength and softness. It seems I'll have a salad. Let'S be honest, it's kind of a perfect time for that and yet what's happening in the wall, so hopefully we'll see lots more wonderful short dr. to China for women. We'Ve seen obviously there's different things for everyone, not really long for a while I've seen in the last two years every day as much as we love long hair when visit yeah, even their color, their change of color. More often so you know koala business, it's it's really a big thing. The trend goes toward shorter hair just to us, make more money and we're all our businesses. So hopefully we'll see that, and also I feel like. It really is amazing to see people's personality change when you're, really something I'm sure when you shave your head, everybody notice, you know so I'm just gon na text rise to the top a little bit and then her almost that guy stuck we're actually in a live Working salon so hearing a blow-dryer in the background we wanted to you know: Jenny invite us to the guest Randi's law, which is in the Tribeca Soho area. It'S called Cutler times or low, so you know normally we work in a studio, but the lesson is great. Nonetheless, so what's happening here on the tower, so even though wants to keep this strength through the fringe area, it was already very layered on top, but it felt a bit too chunky, so I wanted to give it a seamless feel. So I just went through with my textures and blades. This is what I'm saying over there and just creating deep V's, and this way it's just gon na keep it really seamless. So you don't think that there's any layering and it gives the appearance of one length, but it moves beautifully as well. It'S kind of create an easy, visible or ghosted layers, and we use that term invisible layers for a little time that I saw when long Marcia is a beautiful hairdresser used to turn layers. I mean I just want everything I do. I always feel it effortless and seamless, even if it's really really strong, so this is right about working in this way. Exorcising, do you think a new hairdresser who's, maybe right out of cosmetology school, should learn a technique like this, or do you still prefer them to learn first kind of cut kind of clean, strong boys before doing something to always have the foundation, then, once you have Had to control strong lines, then you can know how to destroy it, because obviously, you've got a lot of experience and trained a lot of people, and I think sometimes people say well. Why can't I just learn so to speak. It'S like everything in life. You know you just didn't learn about the icing on the cake to make it back so guys. Thank you so much. I feel like the probably getting close to the husband agenda so lieutenant with what this is a question that always asked, especially with a haircut. It'S not just to have a baby yeah. I want to this all to be tight. Another problem very now, let's create a heavier almost one length field on top, but still have a seamless effortless flow through and yes, we are very much finished. You know a lot of ways when I look at it grates it looks like it's actually longer. I know it sounds strange, but you know when this was here and that was there. It didn't feel like. It was a great lesson in Jenin. Grace educated about her go and she's been slowly wrong. Yeah yeah cause if she's gon na leave sometimes we're gon na put it back again live lyrics tonight. Today'S a twofer on a rainy Sunday tonight will be with my buddy Jay Mahmud due to more hair fighting. I think it's up to the after 7:00 p.m. East Coast time. So if one a night time glass sample, see you later thanks, Jenny
