#1: Kenra Volume Spray — Expert’s Pick — Pro Blowout in a Bottle

Kenra Volumizing Finishing Spray View on Amazon

Here comes the winner. This super hold finishing spray is one of my favorite beauty tricks in a bottle. Not only does this product withstand humidity, it promises to keep fine hair in shape for up to 120 hours. Not that I tried that. This jumbo-sized aerosol spray has a lot of pumping power and not just when it comes to hold.

First impression: I’ve never tried Kenra hair products so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, as a fan of aerosol finishing sprays, my basic impression was that this super hold finishing spray could do at least everything it set out to do. After all, how hard can that be?

Don’t let Kenra’s finishing spray fool you. As intimidating as the large can was, the hairspray comes out in a lightweight and fine mist that makes it easy to layer without commiting to tacky hold. While the scent was lightweight and pleasant, it didn’t linger. (Which is a bonus if you’re sensitive to fragrance or happen to dislike it.)

Results: Hello, big hair. After applying the Volume Spray to set my round-brushed locks I took a moment to flip the can over and read the directions. At first I didn’t really think I needed to because a product like this is pretty self-explanatory. But who knew? Bam!

According to Kenra’s manufacturer instructions, the super hold finishing spray should be applied in sections at the root to add instant lift and volume. I tried and tested this advised technique and suddenly it didn’t matter if I was from Texas, because my hair sure was.

This lightweight root lifter spray is ideal for fine hair. When applied as instructed, hair should get the volume it craves for date night, prom, weddings, and whenever you want a little instant va-voom. Despite the rather sticky and humid weather experienced down here in the South, Kenra’s finishing spray kept my roots lifted and flyaways at bay at least for one day.

(But you’re welcome to try the 5 days as claimed. Does anybody do that? I didn’t think so but it’s good to know.)

Kenra Volume Hairspray

Kenra Volume Spray

Pros
  • Jumbo-sized can
  • Fine mist
  • Buildable
  • Humidity-resistant
  • Pleasant scent
  • Pageant worthy root-lift
Cons
  • Hold was not a super hold as defined in the product description
  • The bulky packaging could be difficult to use if you have limited dexterity

Verdict: Absolute winner. This product is magic and will impress you with its instant results and immediate root lift. This is a must-have product for finishing.

#2: Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray — Ideal for Amping Fine Tresses

Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray View on Amazon

I love a volume boosting hair product that keeps my locks touchable. Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray is delightfully scented and feels downright indulgent. It’s perfect for those days when you want a lightweight styling product that’s workable and provides just the right amount of shine without sacrificing or changing the texture of your locks too much. (If at all.)

In my experience Oribe’s Thickening spray will likely work best on fine, damaged, dry and chemically treated hair, when a styling mousse could fail to offer both the volume and condition needed to help the hair look healthy and shiny.

First impression: What else can I say? It’s Oribe. Packaged in an amber-hued spray bottle with Oribe’s signature cameo design, there was hardly a thing I couldn’t love about testing out this thickening spray. In fact, it’s the first one I used and probably the one I’ll grab most frequently whenever I want to feel a little luxurious and wear a hair product with a scent, that lingers. But enough about all those first impressions. This is what Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray did for my wavy locks.

Results: Although the product felt great and didn’t weigh my tresses down, it didn’t add a lot of oomph for me. I spritzed what was a generous amount on damp hair and shebang! My blowout was fabulous and shiny, but I didn’t see much by way of increased thickness or volume.

This product contains a thermal heat protectant which is certainly why my hair was left soft and touchable. I’d say this product would be best for long, fine hair right before using a round brush or hot rollers. It’s really good for thin hair that just needs a little something to add some decent texture and slight volume. I loved how silky my locks were, so it rightfully deserves a place in my styling arsenal since I’m a fan of top-shelf styling products that make locks feel fluffy and wonderful.

This product is probably best for fine, thinning, and damaged hair types that crave a weightless feeling with little to no sticky hold.

Oribe Thickening Spray

Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray

Pros
  • Pleasant scent
  • Conditioning formulation
  • Lightweight
  • Provides shine and touchable finish
Cons
  • In typical Oribe fashion, the Maximista Thickening Spray is pricey

Verdict: Despite not increasing my hair’s thickness, this spray has become my favorite pre-styling treatment because my hair looks and smells wonderful after I use it. If you crave a workable and nourishing product that seals and protects the shaft while adding a little body, Orbie’s Maximista Thickening Spray can deliver that each time with confidence. There won’t be any surprises, and sometimes that’s a good thing.

#3: Hair Plush Hair Thickening Treatment — Ideal for Thinning Hair

Ultrax Labs Thickening Treatment View on Amazon

For fine and thinning hair, Hair Plush can be used two different ways. Not only can this gelled formulation be applied to wet or dry hair, it’s dual-purposes are to thicken and lift. Curious about the effects on wet and dry hair, I knew I had to take one for the team and hesitantly applied the gel-like serum to my dry roots, and the results failed to fall flat. Bonus!

First impression: Hair Plush is marketed with a lab esthetic and the serum looks pretty serious in its easy to pump, clear packaging. It is buildable, lightweight and thin with a workable texture and slip, but the scent itself is pretty strong and slightly off-putting. After application there was a tingling sensation and a menthol-like scent that instantly told me this product what was going to do something interesting to my hair.

Results: Hair Plush is best used for an extended period of time as its main purpose is to treat thinning hair. While I didn’t experience any Rapunzel-like hair growth overnight, I did some research on my own and the product is favored by many users in treating thinning hair when used diligently and consistently.

Even when applied to my dry hair Hair Plush did not weigh it down or make it look greasy, which was the last thing I wanted after taking the time to blow it out. If you have thinning hair or a receding hairline Hair Plush might be worth a go. This product is pricey so keep in mind the future investment if it happens to work for you.

Hair Plush Treatment

Hair Plush Thickening Treatment

Pros
  • Feels great and tingles on the scalp
  • Makes hair soft and shiny
  • May help increase hair growth over time
Cons
  • Costly
  • Strong smell
  • Was not an overnight success. (Come on!)

Verdict: Time and consistent application will prove if this product will work for you.

#4: Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray — Pumps Up all Types of Fine Hair

B&B Thickening Spray View on Amazon

Bumble and Bumble’s hair thickener has been a favorite of mine for a long time when used as a pre-styling bodifying treatment before a blowout. Ideal for types of fine hair, this texturizing spray does what it says and gladly does it well.

First impression: I’ve always loved Bumble and Bumble’s clean and simple packaging. The plastic bottle and pump spray are easy to hold and maneuver so that you can distribute the thickening product evenly throughout the hair, which is key with any styling products if you want best results. The formulation is somewhat sticky like a hair spray so keep that in mind if you’re aiming for a soft finish.

Results: Always great. Bumble’s products tend to do what they say and they keep it pretty simple. I’d say this a steady yet basic thickening choice for all fine hair types, but might be drying on parched hair if used daily or long-term.

I would recommend pairing Bumble and Bumble’s Thickening Spray with a leave-in conditioner or grooming creme for added moisture and shine. My opinion is that it is best for all fine hair types that craves a noticeable extra lift. Whether used for air-drying or blow dry styling, the heat protectant and polymers will add buildable volume without damaging your mane or coating it with an undesirable feel. Finish with a lightweight wax for texture and shine.

B And B Thickening Spray

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray

Pros
  • Adds plenty of volume
  • Easy to use pump
  • Pleasant scent
Cons
  • Drying and dull feel on the hair shaft
  • No shine

Verdict: Bumble and Bumble’s Thickening Spray does what it claims in just one shot. It’s a timeless and safe bet for adding body.

#5: Big Sexy Hair Powder Play — Perfect for Extending a Blowout

Big Sexy Hair Powder Play View on Amazon

If you prefer to skip a few days in between your shampoos a hair powder might be for you. Applied at the root on dry hair, powders can amp up your fine locks within seconds while also mattifying excess shine that causes that not so fresh feel. Powder Play is a basic hair powder that’s versatile and works in a jiffy for instant root lifting results – particularly on fine hair that needs a lift.

First impression: Big Sexy Hair has always been all about volume and lift. Although the packaging and branding hasn’t changed much over the years, Big Sexy Hair is good about creating products that have a lightweight scent and weightless feel. The powder itself is white and silky and easily breaks down to coat the shaft and root.

Results: Holy mess. The packaging on this product needs to be reconsidered. I found that far too much hair powder sprinkled out upon shaking it, and this means you could easily waste a ton of product if you’re not careful during the application. If you accidently apply too much product at the root you might find your hair is difficult to comb through. As with all texturizer products, apply with caution. Too much of a good thing, especially a hair powder, can be bad.

Sexy Hair Powder Play

Big Sexy Hair Powder Play

Pros
  • Versatile and ideal for all hair types and length, particularly fine hair
  • Instant lift
  • Noticeable body
  • Excellent for styling second-day hair
Cons
  • Poor packaging
  • Too much powder can be accidently dispense
  • Applying excessive powder will make hair difficult to comb through

Verdict: If you’re into hair powders you’ll notice the body and volume this product instantly adds, but steer clear of the mess and don’t go too crazy with it or your locks will fall flat.

#6: L’Oreal Volume Filler Densifying Gelee — Add Volume to Fine, Unruly Hair

L’Oreal Densifying Gelee View on Amazon

This stuff at first glance looks like glue but was ideal in adding some curl-control to my hair without weighing down the hair at the scalp. Although I’m not a fan of hair gel in any sort, this one was worth a test-run since it’s a popular product among people with fine hair who look for a way to thick and control the hair shaft, and increase its diameter.

for thickening and controlling the hair shaft and increasing its diameter.

First impression: Since I’m not down with heavy gels and maximum hold styling products, I was a little reluctant to work this thick gel through my roots on a freshly-washed hair day. But alas, the smell. L’Oreal makes wonderful styling products that never fail to go hand and hand with a pretty scent. At first glance this gel might look like it’s best for a slick backed or a spiky style, the consistency was surprisingly like more of a soft and silky pomade.

Results: This product was excellent for blow drying styling. It will provide the grip needed to pull out waves or control them with ease. On the flipside, too much of anything is never a good thing and volumizing gels can be difficult to gauge application upon first trial.

I find this product worked best with a light hand and although the results did add volume and hold, you’ll need to be careful with over-application because the gel product could make straight hair greasy if its accidently over-applied.

Loreal Volume Filler

Loreal Volume Filler Gelee

Pros
  • Pleasant scent
  • Good shaping hold
  • Visible volume and lift
Cons
  • Can’t be over-applied
  • Could make fine hair too greasy if over-applied

Verdict: If you favor a gel product and have locks that can be a little unruly, this volumizing gel will put you back in the driver’s seat with ease.

#7: It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer — Best for Short Hair Styles

It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer View on Amazon

Sometimes when you’re having a bad hair day you just need a miracle. I’ve long been curious about this root volumizer product because it claims to do 9 more things in one fell swoop. Why wouldn’t I be curious?

First impression: This might at first glance look like a package you’d find in grandma’s medicine cabinet because as far as packaging goes, it looks pretty dated. The aerosol formulation dispenses well in short, small bursts and the scent was surprisingly attractive. Thank goodness. There is a sticky feel to the spray and although it claimed to be a miracle product, my experience was not as stellar as I had hoped.

Results: I applied this product liberally and evenly right before my blowout and worked it through with a wide-tooth comb. During my blow drying I noticed my hair had a different texture, but it wasn’t quite body that I was experiencing. Instead, my hair felt coated. Although I did achieve extra volume I simply did not like how my hair felt and immediately felt the need to wash this miracle right out. Ouch.

My opinion is that this product is best for short to medium length hair types that don’t mind daily shampooing and styling. For what it delivered I wouldn’t skip a shampoo after using it due to the slightly greasy feeling it left in my hair. This might be a product that would have been best focusing on a few benefits rather than trying to do it all with one formulation. Keep it simple!

Its A 10 Blowdry Volumizer

It’s a 10 Miracle Blowdry Volumizer

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Easy to apply with its lightweight mist formulation
  • UV protectant
  • Wasn’t stiff
  • Pleasant scent
Cons
  • I felt the build-up
  • No shine
  • Minimal improvement in volume but might work better on fine hair wanting visible lift with an easy to apply aerosol spray

Verdict: Some things are popular because they work on a variety of hair types, but I just didn’t have the success I hoped for. I believe this would work best on fine hair or short styles.

A Final Word About Volumizing and Thickening Hair Products

Plumping the hair and achieving volume isn’t something that can be achieved with one styling product. Whether you opt to try any of these gels or sprays or go crazy and try them all, remember it’s really about how you style your hair rather than what you put in it.

If you’re seeking more volume and thicker roots it’s vital you find a stylist who is experienced in styling techniques that will provide more benefits than anything in a can.

Styling Makes a Big Difference

Whether it’s using a vent brush and a cool shot of air from your blow dryer or using hot rollers and a round brush to obtain body, it all comes down to changing the direction of the root.

Back when I was in beauty school I learned something about directing the hair. If you were a child in the 80’s you might remember tilting your head to one side and blow drying your hair while using the shape of your tilted head to bend and move the hair at its root. This provided maximum volume and lift and took little more than Aqua Net hairspray to finish it off.

When shopping for a volumizing styling product consider your hair type, your texture, your main goal, and the formulation that will best work for your needs and styling regime.

Since I have a TON of fine hair, all of these products posed a slight risk of coating my shaft and weighing it down. For maximum volume and lift in any style make sure you’re using a quality shampoo that adds body, and then rinse, rinse, and rinse some more so that no remaining product stays on the root. And then learn how to blowdry like a pro.

Styling tools when used in conjunction with any of these reviewed volumizing products will offer far more value than anything sold in a bottle alone.

A different hair cut, layers, texturizing, and even a perm can solve most fine hair challenges while increasing volume. For thinning hair or for those experiencing hair loss, a diligent regimine is the best bet in achieving more permanent results.

Get the Lift You Need

Check out a few hairstyles that can provide the appearance of thicker hair, and remember — you gotta buy a product if you want to try it. Results vary for everyone based on hair type, style, and texture.

Read product reviews and seek out those that explain a similar hair type and challenge so that you can make a better estimate of what might work. Follow the application tips for best results.

Make a wise choice when choosing volumizing hair products, and when in doubt, bend at the waist and blowdry your hair upside down. It’s free. (And works.)

Long live big hair!
