Gabrielle Douglas’ Hair | Celebrity Hairstyle of the Week

This week, I chose Gabrielle Douglas for my Celebrity Hairstyle of the Week. I realize that last week I chose an Olympian and I already posted an article about Gabby’s hair. However, it really bothers me to see how much she is being so ridiculed. Plus, I think she is perfectly beautiful!

Do you remember when Gabrielle Douglas became the first African American to win an individual gold medal at 16 years old? Despite her accomplishments, the social media world focused on Gabby Douglas' hair....

To be completely honest, I usually don’t follow a lot of sports or even the Olympics, but for some reason, I feel really drawn to Gabby. Her story is just so amazing and I love watching her kill it on her floor routine. She just has so much charisma, charm, and grace all packed into her tiny body.

Watch this video, and tell me it doesn’t give you the chills:

The Controversy Behind Gabrielle Douglas’ Hair

I have watched so many interviews with Gabrielle Douglas and her family, plus all of her Olympic routines and a bunch of other footage and I have really never understood what the problem with her hair was. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not African-American, and ethnic hair is not really my forte, but I still don’t see any problems with her hair.

I understand that her hair may be slicked back and doesn’t look its absolute best while she is performing. But have you ever looked at any of the other gymnasts’ hair when they perform? They all look the same and there is a reason for it.

What Do Gabby’s Family and Friends Say?

Gabby’s mother, Natalie Hawkins stated in an interview:

“When I first saw [people talking about Gabby’s hair], I was confused because I was looking at the pictures and I’m thinking, ‘I’m missing it, cause I don’t see what they’re talking about.’  I mean, she doesn’t have flyaways all stickin’ out. It’s not like it’s, ya know all over her head. It’s pulled back into that ponytail.

And I guess a lot of people don’t realize sometimes when you put the hair in the bun, because they’re tumbling, and the speed at which you’re tumbling is so fast, a lot of times, it just spins right out. And if it’s too long, it’ll whip you in the face, or can catch you in the eye. People call it the messy ponytail, but you know how they pull it through, but they don’t pull it all the way through, and it stops at a certain point. But that keeps it from moving. But a lot of people don’t realize that.”

Dominique Dawes replied, “And I’ve actually entered a lot of questions about that, and as an athlete, you are not focused on your appearance or you’re not gonna make those historic achievements that your daughter has been able to make.”

What Do I Think?

To reiterate, I think she has beautiful hair. I think she looks especially cute when she is not performing (although there is nothing wrong with her slicked-back bun). She typically wears it straight (either from a straightening treatment or a flat-iron) and it looks beautiful. If you don’t like her hair, focus on the other positive things she accomplished and records she broke.

Your Turn: What do you think about Gabrielle Douglas’ hair? Do you think the media’s opinion is ridiculous? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments section below…
