1. Baby Bangs

Baby bangs (aka micro fringe or bettie bangs) have been going strong for a few years now, but only seem to be growing in popularity.

While other types of bangs tend to start between the eyebrow and lash line, baby bangs are extremely short (they should be no more than a few inches long). In fact, true baby bangs should stop before hitting the middle of the forehead.

They look good when paired with several other types of hairstyles and can totally change the overall appearance.

The best part of all? You can do this at home! Harmony Nice shows you how easy it is to cut your own bangs at home with a Creaclip. Just make sure to use proper hair cutting tools if you want to give it a whirl.

Oh… and start by taking less off than you want. You can always take off more later.

2. Blunt Bobs and Lobs

Different types of bob haircuts and lobs (long bobs) have been a staple of 2000’s fashion. But this year it’s all about the short, blunt bob. In fact, you can even score extra points by pairing a short, blunt bob with baby bangs!

Blunt means that the perimeter of the haircut has been cut straight across with no elevation. This creates a hard weight line where the hair ends and creates the illusion of thicker hair.

Layering should also be avoided as it will take away from the blunt look.

💡TIP: My absolute favorite way to style a bob haircut is to use a hot air brush like this one here. It creates volume, smooths the hair, and gives you a salon-quality blowout at home (it actually works wonders with several types of hairstyles).

However, if you have shorter hair this is probably not a good option for you as the barrel is quite large and gets hot.

3. Long Airy Layers

When it comes to long layers, less is more right now.  When you putheavy layering in long hair, it can quickly become choppy and unblended.  Back in the days of scene and emo haircuts, this was cool, but that’s no longer the case.

Instead, the trends aregravitating towards long, feathered layers that add bounce to the hair, withoutthe chopped look.  This can be done byslightly texturing the ends and using over direction to layer the hair withouttaking out too much bulk.

To take it a step even further, ghost layers (or nonexistent layers) have been increasingly popular over the past year.

This technique was made popular by Stylist Ramòn Garcia, who claims that “It’s a technique that adds movement and texture while giving the illusion of a one-length haircut. It works for all types of hair, so it really is the best of both worlds.” (source: Allure)

It’s a great technique for those who want to add movement and remove weightwithout sacrificing length.

4. Top Knots

Gone are the days of messy buns only being acceptable for moms on their way to soccer practice.  These days, messy buns and top knots are a fan favorite, and they just keep climbing to new heights (think man bun).

This year it’s all about the “modern top knot” which is a more sleek variation of the traditional messy bun.  The fashion industry has even been putting forth their adaptation, which leaves soft tendrils of hair falling around the face, while the rest of the hair is neatly placed in the bun.

Whatever style you go with, just get that hair up top.

5. Bobby Pin Hairstyles

Idon’t know about you, but my husband always points out how he can find bobbypins in every corner of the house.  Imean, you can pretty much use them for anything.  They keep the loose hair in place, they pumpup parts of hair that you want to be pumped up…

You know a new hairstyle can make or break your look but you probably need some inspo. Here are 10 different types of hairstyles that will make you want to change your hair stat.

Butnowadays, people are getting creative with them.  To follow the trend, use your bobby pins tomake designs in your hair.  Triangles andcrisscrosses are amongst the more popular variations.

Better yet… this summer, bold statement hair pins are the hottest thing since the carpet sweeper.  Just grab yourself some of these bad boys and wear them proudly around your hairline.

6. Curtain Bangs and Layers

I don’t know if you got the memo yet, but 70’s styles are pretty hot right now.  Celebrities like Sophie Turner and Hillary Duff have been stepping out with full-blown 70’s inspired hairstyles… and the fashion world is going nuts over it.

One of the more popular typesof hairstyles right now is a nice curtain bang and/or feathered layers tomatch.

Curtain bangs are parteddown the middle and frame the face on both sides.  The should be long and thick, but unlike the70’s variation, the ends should be super textured.

Celebrity hairstylist, Tabatha Coffey suggests styling curtain bangs with a big, round brush.  She says to brush the bangs side-to-side, then straight down in front, and then straight back.  “This gives you a lot of different root direction and movement,” she says. (source: Rachel Ray)

7. Thick Braids

Braids of all shapes and sizes can be integrated into any other type of hairstyle to instantly add trendiness.  Hello Daenerys Targaryen…

You know a new hairstyle can make or break your look but you probably need some inspo. Here are 10 different types of hairstyles that will make you want to change your hair stat.

But if you really want to wow the crowd, go for a thicker, looser braid.  This adds more volume and texture to the hair and gives it a whole new look.

If you reallllly wanted to take it a step even further, you could venture into the world of mohawk and bubble braids.  There are so many fun styles you can create with one trendy base style.  Get creative, man.

8. The Textured Pixie

At the dawn of a women-empowered world, girls are feelingcompelled to chop their hair as short as possible.  Celebrities like Katy Perry and Ruby Rosemade the short, shaved undercut a top choice for women in the late 2010’s.

Although short hair is still incredibly popular for women, it’s graduating towards a softer, more textured look.  This year, the textured pixie is all the rage.

To style this haircut, I highly recommend Paul Mitchell Spray Wax.  It adds bendable texture to the hair, without making it look greasy.  It’s perfect for piecing out the textured ends.

9. The Modern Shag

Can’t get enough of the 70’s hair trends?  Well, you’re in luck! The modern shag is also making its rounds.

A shag haircut just basically means that the hair was cut at 180 degrees (straight up), leaving the hair with a ton of layers.  A traditional shag should have very short layers in the crown that blend into fringier (is that a word?) long layers; there should be very little weight in the longer parts of the hair.

However, the modern shag is a little different.  This variation leaves more bulk in the weight of the hair, and the layers are more textured and blended.

10. Natural Hair Texture

Here’sthe thing: women are tired of their unrealistic expectations.  For centuries, we’ve been expected to lookour best, build a career, be skinny, have perfect makeup, be a perfect mom… thelist goes on.

Butthese days, women are taking a stand to be more loving of our naturalfeatures.  Even big celebrities likeAlicia Keys and Kesha are often seen without makeup these days.

Withall that being said, girls are really starting to embrace their natural hairtexture.  This drastically cuts down onheat styling damage and saves so much time. Oh and that wild look is trendy AF.

So whether you have kinky curly hair or just a little bit of wave, let it be free when you can.  Trust me, it’s beautiful.
