14 Brilliant Rainy Day Hairstyles (That Will Help You Survive Spring)

Rain, rain, go away… but since you’re here, I guess we can talk about rainy day hairstyles…

So picture this… You wake up at the crack of dawn, spend 45 minutes curling your hair, and then walk out the door like…

Rainy day gif.

We’ve all been there…

While rain is crazy relaxing and nothing smells better than a fresh spring rainfall, it’s not very friendly to our hair.

The moisture gets in your hair and causes the cuticle to swell, leading to excess frizz. The chemicals and toxins found in the rain can dry it out and cause extra damage.

And good luck trying to hold any type of voluminous blowout or shaped curls in place.

But here’s the thing… there are so many fun and trendy hairstyles that can protect your hair while withstanding the worst rainstorms in the world. So why try to fight the weather when you know you can’t win?

Here are some of my absolute favorite rainy day hairstyle ideas to help you get through the season!

#1: Crown Braids

I love the idea of braided hair on a rainy day. Braids protect your hair and keep it neatly tucked in place. Plus, they’re cute AF.

Here’s a fun tutorial by Missy Sue that shows you how to do a chunky fishtail crown braid on yourself!

#2: Topknot

I’m not gonna lie… I spend about 90% of my life in a topknot.

They’re cute. They’re trendy. It’s super easy to do. You’ll look totally chic without putting much effort into your hair, which is why it’s the perfect rainy day hairstyle!

If your hair is too short or thinner than you’d like, you can always supplement with a fake bun.

Remember how I said that different types of braids make perfect rainy day hairstyles? Well, I’m about to throw a few more braid ideas your way…

Chunky side braids are super cute and will ensure you look like a VSCO girl in any storm.

Of course, I have to let Missy Sue, aka “the queen of braids,” show you how it’s done.

#4: High Ponytail

A high ponytail will take you a total of 2 minutes to put together, and can look super fashionable if done correctly.

I’ve always loved the idea of sleek hair being pulled straight back into a big, voluminous ponytail. You can even spice it up with some cute accessories.

#5: Covered Up

What easier way to protect your hair from the bad weather than to just cover it up? I know it’s not necessarily a “rainy day hairstyle,” per se, but hear me out…

Beanies are a super cute way to cover your hair during bad weather… and it’s even cuter if you let your hair hang out of the bottom. Don’t worry about it being perfectly polished… your natural texture will work just fine.

Another fun and trendy way to cover your hair is with a hair scarf. Scarves have been pretty popular over the past year, and Amazon has a fabulous selection of hair scarves. It’s a win-win.

#6: Half Bun

The half-bun is pretty much my favorite current hair trend. I think it’s so easy and low-maintenance but so fun at the same time.

It kinda gives off that “I don’t try very hard, but still like to look good” vibe… although it secretly might take a little effort on your end.

… or you can just go with Cassie Scroggins‘ 2-minute half-bun tutorial and call it good…

#7: Braided Ponytail

Oh, look… more braided hairstyles!

It’s so easy to incorporate some cute braids into a fancier version of a ponytail. It just takes that basic ponytail we already talked about and gives it a little more pizazz.

So how bout another Missy Sue original?

#8: Boxer Braids

Boxer braids are pretty much the best rainy day hairstyle ever.

They keep your hair neatly tucked away and protected from the elements, but they’re also really trendy. It’s the best of both worlds.

This hairstyle hasn’t gained much traction yet, but why not? It’s another fun way to spice up a basic ponytail… and I love this idea for a rainy day hairstyle!

You could just put your hair in a knot and let it go, or you can check out this killer tutorial by Alex Gaboury.

#10: Added Texture/Wet Look

“Yeah, I was going for the tousled, wind-blown look…”

What better way to fight bad weather than to just roll with the punches? Is it wet outside? Take advantage of the super trendy wet look (PM Super Clean Sculpting Gel works well for this).

Did you just walk to work in a hurricane? Add some texture to your hair and make it look like it’s supposed to be there (use Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for this look).

Just make it look like you wanted crazy hair, and it can never be used against you…

#11: Classic Messy Bun

What would a post about rainy day hairstyles be without a messy bun?

The messy bun is pretty similar to the topknot but looser and more undone. It might take a little practice to make your hair look perfect while looking like you didn’t try… but the payoff is worth it.

Don’t worry… this tutorial by Kathryn Ann makes it look easy!

#12: Braided Bangs

Okay, one more variation of braided hairstyles. I promise.

A quick and easy way to prepare your hair for the rain is just to braid your bangs back. I love the idea of pairing this look with the added texture style.

It keeps you looking fashionable, but can’t be brought down by the bad weather.

#13: French Twist

The French twist is a fabulous rainy day hairstyle because it neatly tucks away your hair and protects it from the elements.

French twists really don’t get enough credit. They’re not terribly hard to do, and they look fabulous… even when they’re undone.

Alex Gaboury has a really cool tutorial for the perfectly undone French twist. I absolutely love it!

#14: Banded Ponytail

Last but not least, I love the idea of a tight, banded ponytail for a rainy day hairstyle. This is pretty much the same thing as a bubble braid, but I feel like you should keep the bubbles less “bubbly” when it’s raining.

It’s really super easy to do. If you can use hair ties correctly, you can recreate this look at home.
