Doing Your Locs Yourself Vs. Going To A Stylist

Lots of folks starting their loc journey wonder how much maintaining their starter locs (and beyond) will cost them. The answer? It depends.

You can choose to do them yourself and pay with your time and energy (those elbows will burn from retwisting!), or you can pay a stylist. Each path has its own benefits and drawbacks.

Maintaining your locs yourself is totally possible--I've been doing it for more than 4.5 years. Going to a loctician is a great option, though, especially if you want color.

Hi, I'm a new client and I wanted to see it by some get an appointment or three weeks from now well, honey. I don't have any time for any new clients right now, but here's what you couldn't do you can go ahead and send a $ 5,000 deposit via PayPal and when you come in please have you here already done. Can you handle that? Oh okay, hey yo? What'S up, I'm Nina Renee and I'm back with another video, I'm going to talk about the pros and cons of doing about yourself versus going to a stylist. If you liked today's video, please give it a thumbs up also make sure that you subscribe. Let'S do hang get started a lot of folks who are thinking about sharing, vlogs, wonder about the cost and it's a completely valid question, and the answer to that is that it really depends on you. I had pro start my locs, because I'm really not good with precision things with my hands and I knew I wanted my parts to be pretty neat after that I maintained my watch myself and it's free. My teen, I YouTube, makes it super easy to learn how to retwist your locs out of shampoo them how to style them. I mean you can learn how to color them too, but that's one thing I strongly suggest leaving to the pros: cuz there's just too much room for error. Obviously, you're going to have to pay for the tools and some of the products you use chances are. You have a lot of these things already if you're a loose natural, flexi rods, you know your curlers. They can be used on your locs things like flat, irons, curling irons. All of that definitely not now. One thing that I will say is a good thing to have is a hooded dryer. If you have the kind that is like my face, helmet you're, probably gon na, have to upgrade because lots do make your head pretty big, so you're gon na need a room for all that. So the downside, I'm sure you probably know as a loose natural, your arms will get tired. Okay, you'll have your arms up there all day. Another downside for me is that, instead of looking like day one salon here day, four or I have maybe some people have gifted hands or where they can do their hair themselves and use makeup themselves, and it always looks really good. If you're, one of those people, then doing you like yourself, is probably gon na be a piece of cake, you do run the risk of damaging your logs if you get really overzealous on YouTube and you feel it empowers, or you start interlocking your hair yourself, you Start coloring and highlighting it all of that, take your time and don't try to do too much. You can become more tender-headed doing your hair yourself whenever somebody touches my hair overall, though I love doing me here myself, I like having control over the tension that I use over the products that I use, so it works out for me so going to a stylist Of course, you're going to get a fresh, clean salon, perfect, look and you're gon na be able to achieve a variety of styles that might be harder for you to do yourself. You'Ll also have somebody who is attuned to the health of your locs, which is really important, and also you just get a sense of security. From going to somebody who knows what they're doing the chances of a botched job should be much slimmer. So the davits ups and we'll be coming up awesome coins. It could be about $ 85 for retwist only 250 plus for color, and that does not include tip also. You do have less control over the tension over the products and you start vomiting. That'S a problem. You don't want to be paranoid, but you don't want to be passive either so make sure you know, what's going on, make sure that you're asking questions and be respectable and, lastly, dealing with personalities. There are a lot of diva and Dee Bost eyelid and you supposed to be larger than light, and you know I got ta pay ten thousand dollars in advance to get on your calendar. I'M gon na enjoy so either way whether you decide to do your locks yourself or go to professional. Get me paying with you time and energy or with your money. It'S a nice thing to go to a stylist, and you know get that fresh. Look but just know that it is possible to do your hair, so don't think! Oh, my gosh I'm starting locks. It'S gon na cost me you know five hundred dollars a month. It does not have to at all. So let me know what you think of this video. Please remember to give it a thumbs up if you like it, and thank you for watching.

Bittah: I hate doing my hair myself, but my soul won't let me spend the money or the time it takes... So here we are ‍♀️

aaliyahsmommy1608: $5000 deposit and your hair already done. LMAO!! Felt my soul leave my body

Shadava Roberts: I was so tickled at the beginning Stylist can definitely be extra sometimes. I started caring for my own hair after two months of going to a Loctician. So glad I did!

Jessica Terry: A professional started my locs for $150, then did the first retwist for another $150. After that, I started doing my own retwists. Can do it whenever I want or need to for free.

Nikkie: Beautiful locs Nina! I'm 21 months into my second set and both times I had a loctician start them because I don't do hair. I've been going to the same loctician for years and my locs are thriving. I do however wish I could do my locs myself sometimes but the most I can do is shampoo and wash it. I really admire you and others who can their own locs and they look beautiful.

Sharmey Chery: I felt this on a spiritual level!!!!

Nya Johnson: I think I might have to travel to the US to get my locs done The only loctitians in Australia are white hippies that have no idea what 4C is

nubienne34: Great vid! I started my own locs and at my 1 year anniversary, I went to the salon... big mistake. The stylist twisted too tight. My cost didn't include a hairstyle either. I'm good doing it myself.

Aquarius Lady: I got my locks started by a loctician. I did braid extensions when younger..from age 16. So I chose to shampoo and retwist myself to save money. The first few times were very awkward but it got easy. I'm good at it now and my locs look great after..like a professional stylish did them.

Latasha: Excellent video! I enjoyed it a lot. Yes I started my own. Sometimes I wish I would have gone to a salon and had started with comb coils instead of two strand twist. I'm 8 months in. Ur hair is the perfect length and it's so beautiful .

Bri V.: Very good advice. I’m going to start retwisting my own locs. I’ve been getting them done professionally since I started loc’ing 2.5 years ago. My Loctician can lay some hair but she allllwwwaaayyyyysssss late and has her kid with her. Now I thunk it’s a length where I feel comfortable doing it myself.

Gold Spirit: I've never been to a stylist ever unless my mother counts. She was a stylist at one point and started my locs. From then on I started retwisting my hair and dying it.

Empress Occy: It’s early in the morning in England and I’ve just finished feeding my newborn baby, the intro made me Back to video, I literally YouTubed to help guide me on how to interlock my own hair and I can’t believe I learned so quick and its looks good. Also I agree with every point you made #CoinsSaved P.s I love your energy and locs

Deloris Scruggs Lee: Before I decide on loc’s I wanna be able to do them myself. I think it’s such a good thing to know how to do your own hair, so you know what’s going on with your hair. ✨ I wear twist mainly now and I retwist my own. It’s very convenient to do on your own. It’s aLeo like selfcare to me when I restyle. I know the love and intentions I put in my hair.✨

zionmama 95: I would love to see your wash day routine. Your locs are so neat and I don’t see much frizz at all. If you’re willing to share on how you do that, I’d appreciate it!

Nadikip: A 'locitician' () said she'd retwist me for 60 and then procceded to call my hair matted, undid all my locs, did them again the same exact way and charged me $200..im never going back again YEET

Kimmie Kimmxx: I needed this video im so use to doing my loose natural hair. Soo this was my only hangup about getting locs. Thank you

Locturally Locs: I love your content! been doing my locs myself from the start!

charz48: Love your refreshing way of bringing your ideas and experiences.

_ Eyestaywoke: Love this video :) I love doing my own locs

Wini Boansi: You're so beautiful and I absolutely love your locs. Great advice too!

Elisia's Evolution: I do my own locs!! I just take my time and retwist, but it would be nice to have it done by some else one day lol

cublet69ify: I really would want to do my locs myself. However, when I kept my head shaved,I often missed spots in the back with the clippers. So,the idea of trying to keep my locs that I can't see clearly in order worries me to no end.

Pewalina: Hi.. I really like your locks , I have been researching on locks because I want to lock my hair and this was really helpful.

Michael Anthony Dyer: Gotta stay doin it myself, my pride makes me want to do everything with my day one...ME

Brea Clark: I got mine started for $45 and didn’t have a problem scheduling. I also live in Indiana so it’s way cheaper to go to a loctitian ☺️ some prices I’m seeing on here are outrageous!

Asahia Smith: Lmaooo setting that appointment! That’s exactly how these stylists are nowadays

kenya kinard: Hey i have been thinking about getting dreads for a while I was going to get them last year but I did a big chop instead because my hair wasn't natural it was damaged. I have been natural for a year and a half and I'm so amazed over how my hair has grown with no chemicals at all! but Sunday coming I'm getting dreads thank you so much for the videos you have motivated me to go through with getting them❤️ I just subscribed to your channel

Bridgitte Withers: I have been going to stylist since I started my locs ... I’m almost 2yrs in now.... I’m thinking about taking over myself .. are there any downsides to that ?? Thanks in advance !

NaturalCurls4Life: Too funny and great points. Your locs look great! Subscribing.

MH: My loctician only charged $15 ‍♀️so I didn't mind getting done every month or two I just did maintenance

Audrey Oulai: A loctician start my locs but now I retwist MyShelf and when I do my hands is on fire mdrrrr, I have to make a quick pause ahahah

S. P.: Had to sub ❤️your vids cut all my hair to start them again been over 10 years but I’m so ready....

Guess Who: Great video. Quick question, i've just recently started to redo my twists, eventho there not locked yet, what is the best method on retwisting them and I use a standard blow dryer, the kind that you hold. How long should I blow dry my hair. Oh, and I use the silver chrome plated clips. Two each twist, one on the root of the twist and one on the end of it. And I use the mango and lime locking gel. How much should I use, like they amount on each twist? My hair is about 4 inches long. Sorry if confusing

Steve Brefo: More videos boo,you are beautiful, love your locks.

Pretty. Busy. Boss. Mom: Love this video!!! New Subbie ❤️

clownko •: tried twisting my hair and it won’t stay twisted at the scalp

Kourtney With the kurls: I laughed so hard at the intro!

Tashia Jones: Gurl i am CRYIN LAUGHING at ur intro. .Shyt so accurate...plus they have nasty attitudes n act like ur bothering them.

Tracey Gordon: Love this

MH: "Have your hair already done"

SayconTalks: That intro LOL

Jade Denton: Gorgeous!!

ernest vanessa: what size are your locks ? extra small?small?...

tomiwaspeaks: Ngl.. I’m abt to start my own dreads by myself because everything i go to they give me a very ridiculous amount …

Nathena Antoinette: Excuse my language...your locs are fucking gorgeous

xtinaaanitx: the adlibs

nick austin: The adlibs fammm dope video

Lamara Stephens: What size are your locs and wet part system do you have

Anne D.: I’m thinking of going to the barber shop instead of a salon. I doubt men are paying as much money

Kimarie Tobe: How do you put hair jewelry in your hair without it looking tacky

Galactic butterfly: loooool at that intro girl

Mark Burnett: man she is so pretty:) For a moment I forgot what I was here for..
