‪Do Spoolies Really Work? | No Heat Curls Fab Or Fail | Cute Girls Hairstyles

I've wanted to try out these No-Heat Curl Spoolies since I first saw them online a few years ago! But, do they really work? I decided today to put them to the test in this next episode of "Fab or Fail"! What do you think?

We've shown you so many no-heat curl tutorials on our channel, and you can use pretty much anything to curl hair as long as the device helps the slightly dampened hair to hold its shape long enough to dry. To see our playlist of heatless curls, click HERE! https://youtu.be/8g6-4AAqVLI?list=PL87...

I ordered two sets of 15ct Jumbo Spoolie sets, along with a box of 24ct small curl formers. I did this to try out both sizes for you, so you can see what to expect from each. For this Fab or Fail, the spoolies on the right side were placed in completely dry hair, and the spoolies on the right side were with slightly dampened hair.

It took about 15 minutes to put these curl formers in my hair, and then I left them there for about three hours.

These heatless curl contraptions are made out of silicone, the elasticity of which helps hold your hair but also makes taking them out a little painful (and even pulling out some of the strands). I also show you a technique that I used in applying the spoolies, that I felt was way easier than what the included instructions demonstrate.

I also found that the spoolies popped out about 15% of the time, which could make sleeping on them a little difficult. If I were to do it again, I would wear a headscarf on my head to help hold the spoolies down on against my head.

After taking out the spoolies from both sides of the head, you will see that they dry application side left a subtle beauty wave. Who doesn't love beach waves? AND NO HEAT, too! On the slightly-dampened side, you can see that we ended up with a tighter, more full curl, which can be a beautiful look and excellent for an updo base.

Obviously, these work best on long hair, for long hairstyles, and also medium hair. I'll have to try them out on Bailey to see how they do on short hair.

Everyone, this is not a sponsored video... I personally bought these on Amazon and have had zero contact with Spoolies. My results and opinion is expressly my own. Also, my results may not be your results, as the final curl takes in many factors including hair health, texture, length, how wet the hair is, how long you wear them in, etc.

To see your own photo recreations of this style featured in our app, feel free to tag your photos on IG with: #CGHSpoolies

How do I rank these Spoolies on our Fab or Fail Scale??? I actually give it a "Fab" AND a "Fail". Why? Because for the benefit of the curl... the difficulty in keeping them in, and the pulling on hair when we took them out, combined with what I feel is a high price, gives it a Fail. But, I also give it a Fab, because I do enjoy the look of the curls and waves, both wet and dry, with no heat. Is this a gimmick? It could be. You can help decide!

( upbeat music, ), Hey everyone, I'm Mindy from Cute Girls, Hairstyles and today we're gon na do a fab or fail. I'm going to be doing fab or fail on this product called the Spoolies. They're supposed to be heatless, hair curlers that give you great awesome. Curls super easy., So this is not a sponsored video. I have not been paid by the company to do this.. I literally just saw this on an infomercial somewhere and decided. I wanted to try it. Before we go. Don'T forget to subscribe to my channel. You can click the button right there and right next to the subscribe. Button is a little bell that, if you click will notify you when I put up my videos, so you definitely want to do that. So be sure to click the little bell and let's get to it. ( claps hands ). So when you buy a pack of Spoolies, they come like this or like this, depending on which ones you buy.. This size is a little bit smaller and these are the larger ones.. I'M gon na work, mostly with these today on the top of my head, because I want looser, softer curl. And then, if I run out, I'm gon na switch to the smaller ones.. So this is what the card says. It comes with a little card like this. It has some directions on the back., So I have not used these before. This is the first time for me too.. So I'm just literally gon na read the card and we're gon na do what it says and see how it turns out.. There is a note on the card that says So. I actually split my head into two pieces, so I have a left side and right side and I'm going to try both techniques. And on this side you can see my hair is totally dry right now. I washed it last night and it's air dried. And I'm gon na try dry on this side and then will dampen just lightly on this side and see how it goes.. So it says Step two says Step three says So I am going to pick up a piece of hair.. I have moderate to thick hair, so I'm going to pick up like a little bit smaller piece., I'm putting this firmly against my head and we're going to wrap the hair smoothly around this Spoolie. ( upbeat music, ) And not twist the hair, as I'm doing it. ( upbeat music, ) And then we're gonn fold this down over the top. Whoa okay. Well so obviously, I've used a little bit too much hair. So I'm going to try it again with a little bit smaller piece of hair and place it again in my head. Roll it around smoothly, trying not to keep it twisted., (, upbeat music, ) And let me get it all twisted, then I'm just gon na flip. It fold it over and this time we're good. It's gon na stay., So I have now used the correct amount of hair.. So I'm going to keep doing this with blues until I run out of them across the top., Okay, so again putting it against my head. Wrapping it look: smoothly. (, upbeat music ) Against the curler itself.. This is a little tricky like just because you kind of have to you know: maneuver your hands around the Spoolie as you're wrapping the hair., But it's doable.. It'S just a little bit tricky arm, hold. And then fold it down.. One of my biggest concerns on my hair, obviously is the thickness.. Ah I used too much hair again.. Let'S try it again. Take some more hair, out., (, upbeat music, ), We're happy., (, upbeat music, ) A-ha perfection., Okay, so I need to be careful not to take too much hair, which means I'm gon na need extra curlers and I'm going to have more of them in my hair. At the end. ( upbeat music, ) And we're good and we'll just keep going like that., So you can see. I have now used all of the blues that I have.. I will note that the more I put in harder it was to get them to lay like right next right on my head. Like you can see, some of them have just a little give in them, because it's hard to position them all. When you have that many., I'm out of blues so for my under hair, I'm gon na switch to the smaller size with pink., But on the paper. It also says for a soft casual curl wind hair around Spoolie from mid strand to desired height.. So on the end ones, instead of putting them clear up to my head, I'm just going to put them up about halfway down the strand to keep the curl a little bit. Softer. We're gon na try, that. And also I'm finding honestly that it's much faster to just wrap the hair like this than it is to place this Spoolie right onto my head., Just because it goes a lot faster. So on these ones. I'M gon na just kind of do mid, strand, hair pieces. And these are smaller. So I even have to take smaller pieces of hair. And you can see I'm just wrapping. Upbeat music ) And when we hit the ends, then I'm just flipping and I'm not going all the way clear up to my head. We're gon na finish. There off. ( upbeat music, ), Okay, I have them all put in now.. I had three left so good guessing on the headcount. And I'm going to switch now to the left side, where I am going to actually dampen my hair, just the tiniest tiniest bit, particularly on the ends and then repeat the process.. So this should make for a little more curl than this side in theory.. So here's on my water, like ever so slightly because I don't want to take forever to curl it either. Dampen. Okay. And we're ready to go the next, pretty ones ( upbeat music, ). So again, I'm gon na try to follow their instructions and take a piece of hair, put it against my head and then wrap. This is backwards for me on this side., Oh see it's so much easier like this. I don't know why they chose you to hold it against your head. That'S just weird and awkward. ( upbeat music, ) And then flip it and set it. ( upbeat music ). These are made out of like a slightly kind of almost like a silicone filling material which is kind of an interesting. Like I don't know how I feel about it, because it feels like my hair might stick to it a little bit when we try to take Them out., So I'm kind of interested to see if it like grips onto my hair.. You know those elastics that when you take out they like pull on your hair and it hurts It's kind of what these feel like. So we'll see. If it does that or if they just roll right out like they're supposed to., ( upbeat music ), You know what else they remind me of okay. This is kind of old school and some of you may not have any idea what I'm talking about.. But do you remember those poppers that you had when you were a kid, The ones that you would like put inside out and then they would like shoot off the ground and pop up.? Some people put them on their skin and they'd, give them like little suction cup, marks. Kind of like the precursor to cupping these days for athletes.. That'S what this reminds me: of. ( upbeat, music, ), Okay, I just keep going until I run out of blues and then we'll come back for the pink. Okay. So I'm all done with blue on this side and I'm gon na move to pink.. Again, I'm just gon na use a little bit of water to wet those ends like it's telling me to. And I'm only gon na take it up halfway.. So again, I'm just gon na roll, I'm actually gon na roll. The other way on this one. Roll roll, roll. And then flip half way, up. (, upbeat, music, ) I'll, keep doing that. ( upbeat, music ). It also says just should be noted that they come in playful, pink, this color blue shadow, black and apparently high glow, which means they glow in the dark.. So little kids maybe might like to glow in the dark if they wear'em to bed at night or something.. That'D be kind of fun. (, upbeat music ). I obviously got pink for the small ones and blue for the larger ones. ( upbeat music, ). Okay, so I have officially completed all of the rollers. Shaun. Had me stop we could take a thumbnail picture for this. Video and I suction cupped these little things on my face like this for the thumbnail. And now check it out., Remember those little dots. I was telling you about the little suction cup dots. That'S what they look like. I now have them on my face., So we're just going to go ahead and leave them and keep filming.. But yes, the directions now after you're done say to allow the hair to air dry naturally or apply heat. If desired., It doesn't really say how long to leave them in., It does down lower, say that they call them sleep in curlers. So I suppose you could sleep in them if you wanted to, but I feel like if you laid on them too hard that they would like pop, keep popping and you would wake up and they would not be all in.. So I'm just gon na let them air dry for a bit, especially since this side was totally dry anyway and then we're gon na take them out.. Okay, guys it's been a couple hours since I've had them in my hair., I've just been letting them air dry. Haven'T applied any heat., We're going to take them out and see how it goes., So I'm gon na start with the side that we did not add, or we did not add water to and see how it goes. ( upbeat music ). Now it is sticking to my hair, a tiny bit as I take them out., But not as much as I thought they might to be honest., And you can see these are. The pink ones are supposed to be smaller and tighter curl than the blue.. But I only put them up halfway, so the curl won't go all the way to the root. ( upbeat music, ), Okay, so I have all of them out on my right side.. You can see literally the curls just as they've come out., And you can definitely see that the top ones are softer than the bottom ones., The curl in the bottom. So definitely the blue ones are a looser wave.. Now we're going to take out the side on the left, and now you remember this is the site we added a little water to so we're gon na see if these pull out a little tighter. ( upbeat music, ) - And here is the left side.. So you see the curls straight out of the rollers Spoolies versus the right side.. So there is quite a bit of difference. I'M actually a little surprised. I knew it would have curled better with the water in my hair, but I wasn't sure it would be this extreme., But it definitely is a big difference in the wave.. The paper calls them the perfect California's beach waves. So I suppose, if you are going for beach wave look, I would prefer this side as opposed to this side., But this side might be better for like a dance recital or more like elegant event, where this one's a little more beachy.. Okay. Now, when I would curl my hair with a tool like a wand or something I always shake my hair afterwards to kind of shake the curls out mix it up a little., So I'm gon na go ahead and do that now., (, upbeat music, ). Let'S see what that did., Okay, guys, here's my summary of the Spoolie., I'm actually going to give this product a fab and a fail.. So it's a little bit of mix for me. Here are the pros the pros are it gives you a heatless option. So if your hair is damaged - or you just don't want to put heat on like a little kids hair, this is a great solution.. But if you add water, it does curl your hair.. The negatives, for me, are the cost.. Each of these sets of Spoolies is about $ 30, so to me they're a little bit expensive.. They did pull my hair out.. I also felt like they were hard to get to stay in like if, especially if I used too much hair, they were popping open. And lastly, I felt like it was hard using these to get a consistent, curl pattern.. So like on this side, I have a few that have like little weird edges or a little weird curl, and that's not really the vibe. I prefer in my hair when I wearing curls., Where, with a wand or something like that, I get a very consistent curl. Pattern., So for me it's not my very, very favorite., Like I said before, I'm gon na give it a fab just because they did work. They did curl my hair and it's heatless, which is a fab. But a fail for the price and for the inconsistent curl and just for the popping out.. So there you go., Okay, let's do the final spin. ( upbeat music, ) ♫ Do do do do ♫. Don'T get to you know, spin myself, very often that's kind of crazy.. Now, if you guys love these Fob or Fail, videos be sure to leave a comment below on what else you would like to see me try. maya_papaya: Don't you find it weird how people with curly hair want strait hair I have curly hair and now I am glad I have curly hair because now I see how desperate people are for curly hair

Laura Saylor: I had these as a child and to keep consistent curl you have to brush each section smooth before doing the spoolies!

YouthsOn YouTube: This is what mindy means to me: M- Mother I- Incredible N- Nice D- Dazzling Y- Young-Spirited I love you and your beautiful family Mindy Thanks so much for taking time to show us your magical hair tutorials these styles have saved my life for all kinds of events! Pure Estrogen: I got perfect curls with mine. I typically use a styling cream with mousse for hold.

Amanda Scanlon: I remember when I was a kid in the 60s my cousins had these curlers. Been around a LONG time

Linda Hall: I curled my hair with these when I was a little girl!! I'm 63!

D L: I remember "spoolies" came out back in the early 60's. They were a fad for awhile and were a softer alternative to the then popular but painful curlers called "cascade rollers" AKA "brush rollers." I recall countless mornings waking up with my head feeling like a pin cushion using those torturous things! LOL! Spoolies were also supposed to be an alternative to the old fashioned "pin curl" which left bobby pin dent marks and "fishtails" on your curls. Another version of the spoolie came out as hot rollers after heat curlers became so popular. BTW, I don't remember the price back then but I did buy some with my meager allowance spending money and I know they had to have been the tiniest fraction of $30 in those days! Spoolies certainly took a ride on the inflation train with that price increase!

Rosy Hough: I love them! They look so fun and easy! But, I have super thick hair, so I might need like five bags to do all my hair. The curls they make look really bouncy and natural! Loved your video, Cute girl Hairstyles!

Chris Hurley: Happy Mother's Day, Mindy. You did a great job raising your kids. ❤️

Traci McLaughlin: Loved this video!!! Very informative!!! Loved the demonstration and the comparison to both sides!!! And your cons would have been mine as well!!! The inconsistency of the look of the curls and ends would have been enough for me!!! Thank you so much for this video!! Keep them coming!!! I really like these!!!

Emmy Engström: Loved this video. Please do more of these. Hugs to the whole family, Mindy <3

Noor Ali: Happy Mother's Day, I've lost my mother 3 months ago but watching your videos and the bond you have with twins reminds me of her, thank you so much Mindy for brightening my days with your videos they make me smile when i am in tears

Brooklyn and Bailey: That pic is hilarious mom!

Lynette Fajardo: I’ve been wanting to try these on my hair and my daughters hair. This video will save me so much time since you showed which way helps make more pretty curl. You are so patient. I already know when I do half my hair I will have to take a lil break so I don’t get ancias (Spanish word for anxiety). This video totally helped!!

epupecki: I love when you test products on this channel! The curls look gorgeous on you Mindy!!

Carolina clark: “Little kids might like the glow in the dark”........ me a 20 year old: that’s the one I would pick too....

Maggy Hovden: Hey Mindy! Is it hard for you to let Brooklyn and Bailey travel by themselves sometimes? My parents fear for me for when I have to go to the Houston airport all by myself when I leave for Costa Rica!

Carol Markley: love these things my mother used to put them in my hair when I was a child 50 years ago and we used to use them on either wet or damp hair and the curl would last for a week

Maddy Purcell: This is a great video! :) can you do more heatless curls

KatewithaDarkSide: I love this channel I’m always getting hair tips and new ways to curl my hair this is super helpful luv u guys ❤️❤️❤️

Janis Reeves: Thank you for this. I have been debating on getting these and cost was an issue. Now I know. Happy Mother's Day Mindy!

dfsgirl: I have always wanted to try these! When I was younger and in dance my mom used to use curlers but the were old fashioned sponge ones and VERY uncomfortable. I guess that turned me off from curlers but these don't seem too bad :)

Sareena Haq: I needed curls for my graduation and I now know what to buy that won't damage my hair. Thank you Mindy

CraftyRenate: Interesting! Never seen these, so it was fun to see you try them. ;) After seeing you do it, it's clear that my hair is way too long to be able to use these. I think they may work well on people with hair that's very fine and not too long. Still not worth the price though :)

Rose Conlin: Loved the video!! Very helpful to see :) Love your family ❤️

Melanie Saldana: They made rubber ones in the 1960s. They held more hair than these.

Caileigh Figart: I love how you did step by step and did were super honest about it all!!!! Great video!

Deborah Romero: I feel like these are meant to help with wet-set pin curl style comb outs. To help you achieve a consistent curl shape. That way you could pin the the curlers down with small traditional hair pins instead of the clip style pins that poke you in the head. I feel like that it’s what the four holes are there for aside from not trapping in moisture since you can do this with dry hair and achieve results more rapidly. I also think that if you sectioned your hair and worked bottom to top it would help you achieve a more organized and uniform curl pattern. I think that’s why it recommends starting at the scalp. Just a thought. Maybe give this another go and do a pin-curl style hair comb out and see what happens.

Creative Sparks: Your reviews are GREAT! With the pros and cons especially

Haiku Hiaku: You can find these on wish . com for super cheap! I actually just got 2 for $1 for each pack. Just had to wait for shipping, which for mine was only about 2 weeks.

Stay Positive 3.0: You can def see that the side where you used water came out so much better! Loved the video. PLEASE, do more videos like this!

Fiona Powers: Does anyone else not watch these videos usually but are just obsessed with the McKnight's so they're subscribed? Me too.

Sarah M: Hey, Mindy!! could you please do more hairstyles with Paisley's hair??

Gweny De Boer: I would love to see a demo using the pooples on someone with very straight hair. Your hair has a lot of curl but someone with hard to curl hair might not get that same affect.

Olivia Williams: Tell me I didn't miss pour hour?! Love you guys so much. -Olivia ❤️

Weez: I love your videos so much!! They inspire me to do new hairstyles!

cornflkeboy1: First video of yours I have watched. I think you did a great job reviewing this product :)

Ashley and Shelby: Cute Girls Hairstyles can you please do a hair care routine... Love your channel

Robin Right: I loved Spoolies as a kid (I’m 62 now - so well over 50 years ago!). I’ve always said someone should bring them back - and now some genius has! Can’t wait to buy my own and use them again!!!

EvE(itsnotthatserious): I love this episode . I have a little girl that desperately wants curly hair. So I love heatless options for her. Thanks for recommendation although I agree it's a bit pricey.

Raisa's Pretty Hairstyles: Dear CGH, could you please do a braid hacks video? Thank you! xoxo -Raisa

Leesa Gentry: Please make more of these videos. Love seeing you in action and your honest opinion.

b r o o k l y n: " I have actually split my head in 2 pieces" -Mindy (2017)

becca overleese: Love her, she's amazing!!

Octocurl: Would love to see what Cute Girls Hairstyles could achieve with Octocurl... a new method for heatless curls! We all need a little reprieve from the heat :) xoxo

Hannah davis: can you do a "how we curl our hair" video showing how each of you and your girls curl their hair and what your favorite products are?

Starr Light: Would love to see a review of the TYME hair wand!

BodaciousBeverly: 2 other suggestions after watching the end: If you put the smaller curlers at the top and front and the larger curlers at the bottom and back, you will get a better look. Also, when you were removing the curlers, you were pulling your hair from the under side, which will always pull your hair. It needs to be unwound the opposite of how you curled it to keep from pulling. Love your videos, btw. I agree that $30 is pretty pricey for spoolies!

Chloe Rose: Yesss please do more videos in this series!!❤️❤️

Alexis Marie: Omg !!! Thank you so much for replying!! Im freaking out! Agh you just made my day 10× better❤❤-Alexis

the life interactor: Try the customised shampoo that was featured on Safiya Nygaard's channel!!

Celebrate Life With Jere Mc!: I actually came across your video while researching if Spoolies were still out there! Used them as a child/teenager ... I've found reasonable knockoffs and might try them again as I currently use pin curls as my curling method... no heat on my old, long hair ... It was cute seeing you try to use them as per direction :) We always just rolled them... putting them next to the head to get started was interesting but glad you discovered they rolled up close to head just fine. Enjoyed your video and really liked seeing Spoolies in action again!

Megan Chandler: Short hair would look so good on you!☺️ I love your videos. ❤️❤️❤️

HannahDevlin: Hey Mindy! I just came from bratayleys vlog! So cool that my two favorite YouTube families came together!! How was it with them these past couple of days? and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Nicole Cuellar: Have you tried the Sleep stylers yet? I’ve been debating on buying them but I’d like to see them demonstrated first beforehand.

Jordan Kott: Your channel is amazing! I love your family's channels and y'all always make me smile

Erin Lisa Aulfinger: You can really see where Brooklyn and Bailey got their beauty from in this video <3

Taylor Chapman: Love it best family to watch so loyal and kind to each other!!! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY Mindy!!!!!!

TJ Reyer: Cute video! Btw cupping has been in practice in eastern medicine for thousands of years-it is believed to have started as early as 3000 BC -just an FYI!

BodaciousBeverly: I used spoolies all the time in the '60s and '70s. (I was quite young.) I didn't know they were still available! I want some!

beewildah: thanks for posting and trying this products for your viewers...I know that the products don't work the same on all hair but this review helps me to determine if I want to invest in it or not!!!! thank you again

twominutetips: Its been DECADES since seen and USED spoolies myself. Used them in the 1950's. I agree with your assessment of them too. Fun trip down beauty memory lane - thanks.

Betty Porter: happy mother's day Mindy. can you do a video on how you do your makeup and can you do the DNA braids Please I would love it if you did. love ya!

Maya C: I love that! Looks awesome both ways

Maddie & Julia: I'm a huge fan of you guys!!! I have been watching your vids for a while now and it would be so cool to meet you!❤️

Alexis Marie: Happy Mothers Day Mindy!! Love you guys!❤-Alexis

Amanda Lainie: Love you guys! What kind of mascara do you Brooklyn Bailey use?

Janie Fox: As a teenager back in the early 1960's  I so wanted these - -  after years of sleeping on brush rollers and getting very little sleep -- - I never got them - - can't believe they are still around.

Tanana: Used to get half a dozen maybe of these with a can of Adorn hair spray when I was a kid. Back in the 60's. They worked then. Pretty cool invention! Worked great with shorter hair, easy pincurls. A fail because of the cost is not really a fail. You pay that much easily for a good heat curling iron.

MissMinLyn: Thanks for this I wasn't sure if I wanted to try them. Also cupping has been around for hundreds of Years in Asian culture.. not really new lol ;)

Caylie Lacap: Try using that on the Girls' hair. I love all of your videos! ❤❤

Trae: I used those when I was a kid in the 60's!!

Jean Elize: Hahah I don't think i'd have enough patience for this! Thanks for sharing xxx

Haven Haller: I totally didn't know that these were real things! I remember I used to have some that were for my American Girl Doll! Haha!

Deborah 5122: My mom,and I used something almost identical, in the early sixties, but, they weren't called " Spoolies". I think it's amusing how someone will put a " new item ", on the market, that isn't new. But, what we used in the sixties, actually worked well.

rsmre: I remember using the original Spoolies.  My hair was much shorter, much like a Bob-style haircut, my hair was damp and I rolled them just like a regular curler.

Amy & Hollie Lyons: This video was super helpful and I would love if you could make a Fab or Fail video about the sleep styler!

dayanni: U need to have the patience to do that tbh

Kate Clewer: I subscribed! Please would you fab or fail the scunci hair twirler? Love your videos!

Markell Gates: I love watching your videos every Sunday I wait anxiously to watch your amazing videos I have been watching( and been subscribed) for a while now and love trying the new hairstyles you post❤️

Roxie Beckles: These have been around since the 50s. You're supposed to use them like pin curls. That's why the curls didn't come out that great here. Applied like pin curls on damp hair, worn overnight with a scarf or net, they come out PERFECTLY! They're also very soft and easy to sleep in. I suggest starting in small sections at the bottom of the hair strand, rolling to the scalp, then pop them down to close. Lie them flat before putting on your scarf or net.

flynn wiegner: You should do a video on how to do light/beachy curls for short hair about bailey's length!!
