Hey guys welcome back to my channel in today's video, I'm gon na be sharing something with you that I get asked all the time, and that is how do I retain length? How do I get my hair to grow? How do I go from damage to all the length to mid-back length, I'm gon na be sharing with you, some tips that have helped me over the years tips that I've implemented and still used to this day. Disclaimer. Let me just put this out there. First and foremost, so these tips are all based on great quality products, products that actually work for your hair and you're, using it in the correct intention so you're, using in the correct way it's supposed to be used. Having said that, if you're using products that work for your hair and you're implementing these tips, you're gon na retain length no matter what so tip number one would be washing and deep conditioning on a weekly basis. I think weekly, washing and deep conditioning is sufficient, using a sulfate free shampoo to lift the dirt new product buildup off of the scalp. The last thing you want is to have anything coating, your scalp and your follicles to inhibit growth. Your scalp is your foundation, so always remember that you start off with a clean, scalp clean slate, and then you move into your deep conditioning sessions, which is vital. Deep conditioning really helps to repair the hair from the inside out. It gives a ton of benefits, it improves, elasticity, strength, moisture and I always recommend using heat, immediate condition, whether it be a hooded dryer, a steamer heat cat, whatever works for you and your lifestyle, but using heat to lift your cuticles. You know for 25 to 30 minutes I think, is sufficient or even a few deep conditioned overnight. Whatever works for you and you know whatever that looks like in your regimen, do it deep conditioning is number one your hair will drastically improve your hair will say. Thank you and your ends needed the most because old, hair or long hair is old, hair and old hair. It needs care, we have less cuticle layers as our hair grows. Longer. It'S really important to replenish moisture loss and strength into the hair and deep conditioning phase is exactly where you want to do that. So, keep that in mind deep conditioned weekly, shampoo, weekly and you'll see a huge difference in the health which will then lead to longer lengths, alright tip number two moisturizing and sealing if you're, not deep, conditioning on a weekly basis. If you moisturize, at least you know a couple times out of the week or even you'll, see a huge difference in your ends and, as I mentioned before, longer hair is older, hair and your ends are old, less cuticle layers or more porous easy to dry out And dry hair leads to breakage moisturizing and sealing on a daily. If not a couple, every couple of days is ideal, so, first and foremost, you want to find a moisturizer that works for your hair and when looking in the ingredients, you want to make sure that water is the first ingredient. Otherwise, it's not going to ensure, as your hair and using oils is not the way to go. Oils are hydrophobic, they repel water, so it's best to use it after you've moisturize to really lock in the moisture which will prevent it from evaporating. So using a great moisturizer with water as the first ingredient, and then you know moisturizing and sealing in sections, as you guys know, I always stress doing everything in sections that way. No area is neglected, really work on your nape area and in the crown area, because these areas tend to get neglected. I find that we always reach for our sides, but the middle suffers and it's really important to tackle those areas that are weaker and not easily accessible. So it's best to just work in sections that way you get everything covered and you're, not gon na get a setback so moisturizing and sealing on a consistent basis, really insures that the hair is absorbing moisture its retaining that moisture and obviously that's ability to longer lengths, Because you're eliminating dryness and dryness equals breakage, but moisturizing seal on a consistent basis and you'll notice, the difference okay, so the next tip is protective. Styling and protective styling is probably one of my favorites. So when it comes to black hair care, black hair is very fragile, and so our ends - and as I mentioned before, the longer your hair gets the older. Your ends are the less cuticle layers you have, which means your ends can easily dry out and that can lead to breakage. So it's important to keep your ends contained, tucked away from the outside elements like harsh weather, harsh fabrics, etc. So clipping your hair up having it off of your shoulders and brushing against rough fabrics and being exposed to the air is so important. Especially if you have a goal in mind - and you want to reach from shoulder length to like a PL or a PL to bra, strap length, etc. So some short term protective styles that you can implement we'd be Bunning clipping your hair up. I know that's used to do in the beginning. My head wasn't really long enough for a bun, so I would just clip it up with a regular clock clip from the dollar store or Walmart, and that was it. Wigs are a good protective style like half wigs and full full head wigs, because you can still access your hair. You can still be consistent with your weekly routine and your hair still getting the benefits so look into wigs. It'S not something that you are open to. I used to wear wigs in the beginning. I would wear lace front wigs and I would baggy my ends under my wigs, but those were custom wigs. I also wore half wigs. If I don't want to do my hair and I have somewhere to go, I can easily style up the front and then have the wig in the back and that preserves my ends. Look into protective styling see what works for you. Buttons are my favorite. I love, and it really helps to lock in moisture, keep my ends moist, which will lead to longer lengths all right, so my next tip would be covering your hair at night, so I typically like to moisturize and seal at night, and then I cover my hair With a satin scarf and bonnet, and I find that when I wake up in the morning, my hair is really conditioned. It feels moisturized. It feels soft. It protects your hair from harsh rubbing. It really helps to lock in the moisture to help the products really penetrate. As you sleep, so it's really beneficial also keep in mind that covering your hair with a satin, scarf or bonnet really helps to keep your hairline and tie. Your edges are not rubbed out by the cotton pillowcases or your cotton sheet. So it's just overall protection for your hair that you really want to invest in so really look into protecting our hair on a nightly basis and you'll notice, a huge difference and length of attention over time. I know trimming may seem counterproductive, like what am I going to trim my hair. If I want to get longer hair, I would say trimming. Maybe quarter of an inch to half an inch every 3 to 4 months is sufficient. I don't think that's too drastic, but it all depends on how you deal with your hair and how your hair, regimen is, and the health and quality of your ends. So look at it like this trimming. Your ends on a three to four month cycle or whatever works for you, but something that's consistent is more like a preventative maintenance solution. You want to prevent the damage before it happens, and I find that stretching your trims over long periods over a long duration can lead to a reactive trend and usually a reactive trim results in hacking off like three to four inches and that's what happened to me. So I don't want that to happen to you guys, but I learn from it and I just want to share with you guys what has helped me and do's and don'ts in terms of adieu. Just please keep on track with your trends. I know your hair looks long and you love the length, but honestly it's gon na do more damage in the end. It'S just gon na start to split and wither away at your ends and it's gon na start to look see-through and that's not aesthetically pleasing and it's not healthy for your ends, because the damage will just continue to move further up. Just be proactive. Get your trims on a regular schedule and you'll notice. Your ends will reap the benefits and your hair will thank you for it. Alright, so next up is low manipulation and not manipulating your hair on a daily weekly basis is so important in terms of retaining length. So low manipulation is a huge category and a lot of things can fall under that, for example, of minimizing heat and not using. You know harsh tools on your hair using a wide tooth comb, etc, but in terms of styling it really helps preserve the protein. In the hair, it helps to preserve the integrity of your strands. It really helps to lock in moisture because you're, not using heat, he can really deplete the hair of its moisture. So keep that in mind. Low manipulation is so important, especially if you're trying to retain length, and it gives you another option of styling or styling is concerned. So you can do a braid out. You can do a twist out a flexi rod, a perm rod. The options are endless and the styles are beautiful and you'll enjoy your hair at the same time, alright. So, last but not least, minimizing direct heat, and we just talked about low manipulation, hairstyles, which basically require little to no heat. At all I mean if it is using heat, its indirect heat, but minimizing heat is crucial, especially if you're trying to get from one length to the next after you've reached your goal. You can play around with heat a little bit, but just moderation is always key in this category, so I find on my hair, maybe four to five times a year and that's typically on relaxer day or during that week. So not only does using heat like flat. Irons, low dryers pearl ones, not only does it deplete the moisture levels in the hair, but it also compromises the integrity and the proteins in the hair. So it's really important to lay off the heat, especially if you're trying to get from one goal to the next. So, making that small sacrifice to lay off the heat you know and just minimize it or completely you. Let me it from your regimen for a short amount of time will really help in terms of retaining length. I'Ve done it and I still kind of do it to this day and honestly, I've seen a huge difference in my length attention, so keep heat to a minimum, opt for little manipulation. Hairstyles and you'll see a difference in your ends, so, in addition to the tips that I just mentioned, there's also other haircare habits that I think are beneficial in terms of retaining length. So a tip would be detangling your hair from the ends up using a wide tooth comb to comb your hair, rather than a fine-tooth comb. Why tooth comb is much more gentle on your strands. It won't incur breakage on their ends and overall, it's just healthier for your hair. Using your fingers to detangle is huge. I still do that to this day and I find that I'm able to sift through my knots and tangles easier just with my fingers other than using a comb, because you can't really feel the tension that you're applying so using the baggie method on your hair is A great dry hair solution. I use the baggie like all the time, especially underneath my wig, so that way my hair wouldn't dry out, but if you're experiencing excessive dryness, you know moisturize your hair steal your hair use a baggie like a plastic bag of shower cap cover your hair overnight or For a couple of hours, you'll notice that your hair will feel rehydrated a little moisturized and that will lead to longer lengths, also drying your hair with a t-shirt rather than a towel. It'S a game! Changer, I'm not going back to towels like I'm, not doing it. I'Ve been t-shirt drying my hair for years now and honestly, it's the best thing. It'S so much more gentle on the hair. It doesn't rough up. The cuticles, which can then cause tangling, can then lead to breakage. So using a t-shirt is the way to go so yeah guys, that's basically it all these tips, I've implemented and still used to this day. Everything that I mentioned is basically my regimen. Now I swear by them and they've helped me: go from damaged shoulder-length, hair to mid-back length hair in three years, but also remember retaining length and growing long hair takes patience. It takes time, and it takes consistency so having good techniques and methods, as I mentioned in this video and coupled with great products and using it in the correct way, will definitely get you to your goal. Length definitely help you to retain length and kind of nice. Healthier hair also check out my blog here. This is Singh Kham. I have length retention guide on there and also other length retention tips as well. Thank you guys so much for watching, and I will see you guys in the next video

jolyne renelle: I love when you postttttt...thank you for the tips...they've helped me on my journey....the OG of healthy relaxed hair

iamtrinaful: 1. Wash and deep condition weekly 2. Moisturize and seal your hair 3. Protective style 4. Cover your hair at night 5. Trim your ends 6. Low manipulation 7. Minimize/eliminate heat I love all these tips!

Issa Rae's Body Double: Black hair is fragile! Nothing is a quick fix not relaxers not naturals. Naturals and relaxed girls have the same routine and that just goes to show that Black women really need to take extra care with their hair.

herpderpy: I'm natural, but your relaxed hair maintenance is on point! It's funny because your regimen shows that whether you're processed or natural, a lot of healthy hair habits are universal. I do many of the same things that you showed in your wash day routine and your approach is so sensible. I also love how you demonstrate braid/twistouts on relaxed hair. Our hair is so versatile when healthy and it saddens me when people think you have to be 100% kinky/coily/curly or 100% bone straight. Great channel and your hair is gorgeous!

Candice Colebrooke: Three years natural and I relaxed two weeks ago. It's falls to about right below my shoulder blades, and is SUPER healthy. I only went natural to let my hair regroup because it was really damaged... mission accomplished. (I have hardcore 100z hair) Lemme tell you. I missed my straight hair and definitely do not regret perming. This mane is gonna be so healthy, everyone is finna double take. #PermedAndProud

MsAsb1990: Oh my goodness talk about nostalgia. I started watching your videos when I was 19, ten years ago. You changed my whole philosophy on hair care back in those days. I went from nape length to bra strap length and then to waist length all because of you.

aa y: I'm so glad you remained relaxed and didn't jump on the natural hair bandwagon because many people did. Glad you chose to stick to what YOU like for YOUR hair! I'm currently starting my relaxed hair journey again and honestly wish I stuck to it when I was mid back length and didn't big chop to go natural :(

Crafting with Angie: I've watched you since your first video and you are the reason that my relaxed hair is so healthy. Thank you Sunshyne for the awesome tips and encouragement for those of us who need a reminder of how to continue taking care of our hair. :)

Lightning The Tiger: I've been following you from the jump and I want to first say Thank You for all of your tips. I definitely appreciate that you are one of the few ladies on Youtube that has not gone natural. You know how to take care of your hair. Lots of love! Happy New Year to you!

HeyKendraK: Goodness I have been a supporter since 2008...somewhere around there. I went natural because the relaxer was causing scalp issues, but your tips still got me where I am today. You introduced me to JBCO and I have never looked back. Thank you so much for all that you do. You have proved to many that black women can grow their hair. *Many Blessings*

Gigi Face Glam: Oh my God.. I remember finding your blog Hairlista way back in 2008 and I followed your tips and was able to see my hair get past my shoulders for the first time in forever. I'm natural now but you inspired me to stop using direct heat on my hair back then. I thank you so much and your hair is GORGEOUS!

Push Mak B: Thank God I found you!!! I’ve been subscribed since last week Thursday and now I am confident about relaxing my hair in a healthy way. There’s been so much stigma put on relaxers that it’s become a taboo to relax ones hair, it’s become a battle between the “naturals” and the “relaxer girls” but it shouldn’t, relaxing your hair is a preference and a choice!!! People speak about chemicals yet they will wear makeup as if that doesn’t contain chemicals. What people don’t seem to get is that everything has chemicals, it just depends if those chemicals are toxic or not!!!

Goddess: Your hair is gorgeous and Love that your hair is relaxed and so healthy! I'm also relaxed and I find all of your videos so helpful! Thank you for sharing what has worked for you!

Sapphire Relaxed Hair: Thank you much! I am still learning as I go, but got to know my hair what it likes dislike sticking to my products instead of switching up changing looking at the ingredients as well, moisturizing and sealing for me is a must and keeping my scalp moisturized as well. I really love to deep condition I do these habits every single week, I also include hot oil treatments in my hair care regimen as well once a week. Thank you ever so kindly God bless you

Mane: Thank you so much for your help! I started my relaxed hair journey in February, 4 mos strong and counting. Praying for healthy and lengthy hair. 100,000th viewer

Bee Lee: Very nice video and it’s awesome how interactive you are with your subscribers in the comment section. Thank you for sharing and answering questions, no matter how repetitive they seem. It shows commitment and passion for your channel x

LadyJacqueline07: Hi, I do not have relaxed hair but I really appreciate you because your tips are still very useful for us naturals as well. And yes, I have been on your blog as well, thank you so much for all that you do.

Lala J: Girl I’m here all the way from hairlista days. You really changed my hair’s life. I’m natural but your tips work for my fine coils.

Charsdiy: Before Youtube I had no idea about moisturizing and sealing along with the essential benefits of deep conditioning. Thank you for this video and detailing more tips on how to retain length.

Jeannine Gorden: New Subbie here watching this in 2020. I am currently transitioning against my will due to Rona. I plan on getting a relaxer when I feel like it is safe to do so. I have been watching natural videos to help me with this process. I am glad I found your channel. I want to make healthier hair decisions when I relax again, ex. Ayurveda. So glad I found your channel for more tips. And it's very interesting, alot of your tips/recommendations are things I have recently learned from the natural hair community.

Angèle Faye: Thanks a lot for you tips! I been natural for 8 years and relaxed my hair today. I just couldn’t do it no more I tried . I will be following these tips for a healthy relaxed hair.

THE GOAT: Too gorgeous for words Queen. Thank you for this sis. I just relaxed after 2yrs of struggling with unmanageable NATURAL HAIR. This will help me nurse my relaxed hair so that hopefully I don't have to go back to being natural. That was A NIGHTMARE!!!!! I kept my hair hydrated DAILY and it was still IMPOSSIBLE to manage. Now, the only issue I have is weaves and wigs. I just don't like them. I wore weave braids when I was 16& never put weave in my hair since.... And I'm now 40. Is there a way to still obtain long HEALTHY relaxed hair WITHOUT the fake hair????

Aanika Rahanni: Awesome!!! Very informative love your presentation. No theatrics no drama straight to the point exactly what I need! I will follow

Self Care With Bee: OMG you're an OG. I used to watch your channel back in college when I was relaxed (then went back to natural in 2014) and now I'm back to being Relaxed (June 2019). Subscribed <3

paperpirate: Thank you so much for your help. Currently have very damaged relaxed hair, but I'm excited to get it healthy!

Theresa Beard: Wow i have been incorporating all these things over the last few years i have had several setbacks but my hair has grown back.It is 17 1/2 inches and growing.I am wearing wigs for protective styling and i am presently on a 1 year No Heat Challenge.I am in my 8th month.I have learned so much from u and other Youtube ladies about hair care and length retention. Thanks so much.

Sola Olaniyi: Thanks for this! Just subbed. Always useful to learn more about retaining length. Its the major key with growing hair . I as a High porosity stopped using heat dryer in my DC, just cap and body heat, cos I don't want to further heat-damage my already lifted cuticles. Also I now wonder if trimming is cos of SSK and DSK ? I now dust ' them off and stopped trimming. So enjoying longer lenght. But what causes split ends? And how do I know if I have them? You may still have a Point with trimming after all? . Thanks for this so useful! Lots packed in! Much appreciated!

Tg: Hi Sunshyne, Thank you for all the videos and tips. I have been following your routine and have seen some growth since December. My question is should I just steam on wash day as my hair isn’t ready to co-wash I’m going through a bad shedding phase? Thanks for your reply in advance

Ayo Sk: Great video!! Lots of easy but effective tips, can’t wait to try xx

PaTriciaMarya: THANK YOU, Thank You, thank you!!! Honestly, the one tip that I must improve upon within my hair care routine is trimming. Because I always get those pesky fairy knots, it seems like I am forever dusting my ends. Tfs, Luv&Later...

J Vall: I relaxed my hair after 10 years. You really helped me with reading product ingredients. And after 2 weeks relax, I deep conditioned my hair that had both moisturizing and protein benefits. When I say it brought so much fullness and moisture to my hair. Thank you for all the support

Ericka: Your hair is beautiful! Thanks for another upload it seems like everyone’s going natural so I have no one to give me tips

Ramona Jones: Thank you for the refresher, I need a kick start back into my hair care and this video helped

Shervette Lawrence: Love this post, I do all these but at the end of the day I think that genetics is number one. Someone close to me pays close to little attention to her hair and don’t particularly follow any tips or proper hair care as mentioned here and her hair grows soo fast and it is very long. My hair length is bra strap and hers is close to her waist and as I said genetics is the difference between someone with longer faster growing hair no matter how much care or products are used.

Shekina S.E Blessed Forever: Thank you I did some of your great tips last year since july 2020 My hair was at the top of my ears now they are past my neck Thank you so so much God used u and is still using u to help us All praise to God

Lori Jean-Baptiste: Hi Sunshyne! Are you incorporating Opalex into your regimen regularly?

SW33TSPARKL3: Thanks for these tips hun. Love ur hair as always

C C: Hi. I’ve been watching your videos over the last few weeks, and they have been very informative and helpful. Regarding wigs, is it necessary to wear them? I’m at the beginning stages of trying to grow my hair, and I was wondering whether this would be a good place to start. I’m glad that you mentioned that you wore wigs in the past as a way of retaining growth because I feel as though some people do leave that part out! I would prefer to retain my hair growth without wearing wigs but if that’s the way to go, I’ll do it. My hair is quite short and so putting my hair into a bun isn’t possible. Anyway, thanks for all the content you put out there!

Tim From L.A.: I am a Japanese American man and I have long straight hair. The problem is, when I don't comb my hair, it gets wavy. Is there a way to keep my hair straight without coming every 30 minutes or so? Would you also recommend a hair relaxer too?

Kimberly: Hello, which products do you recommend to add moisture to dry hair, that doesn't weigh it down? I mainly need help with my ends.

Marie-Michelle: I've been following you for your years!!! Still finding your information refreshing. Thank you.

Colleen Marie: Very valuable tips! Thank you

Val Go: I’m starting this regimen now and hoping for good results for my birthday 4/12

Niyah Sulani: My hair is really course and it's really hard for me not to put heat on my hair and it's also hard to regrow my edges any more tips you can give me BTW love your videos

Wilonda Previlon: This Was Extremely Helpful! I Need To Start Deep Conditioning Again! You Brought Up Some Great Points.

LaDonna Sims: Thank you for sharing this post even though it's been 2years ago. I subscribed to your channel. I love your channel already you explain in detail on hair growth. The do and don'ts.

Halima Halima: Love this video. I noticed that my hair seems to feel rough and not soft anymore...I don't know if its breakage or split ends. All I know is that I don't use any heat on my hair, I understand your not an expert but I would like to know what would you recommend. By the way I'm a new subscriber.

The Williams Fam: What is a good leave in moisturizer???? I was using a version of Pretty Witty's mix....I was mixing Tresemme Naturals ( they discontinued it. Ugh! ); distilled water; and glycerin. Now, I need a new conditioner. Preferably a cone free one! Any suggestions??????

FYPNLP: Thank you for the Hairlicous forum all those years ago (RIP). It taught me so much, as it was where I saw the ad for the 'science of black hair'. It was the place I learned how to take care of my hair properly for the 1st time in life and 7 years on I now have full shoulder length hair that is super healthy. Thank you so much.

Janine Mack: I’ve been watching your videos for awhile. What moisturizing sulfate free shampoos do you recommend? I have only found a sulfate moisturizing shampoo that I like, but I would like to incorporate a sulfate free shampoo into my regimen. Thanks!

Kay-Marie: My relaxed hair use to be your length. I had a vicious hairdresser who said that my hair was breaking and convinced me that it needs a little trim. She went scissor happy and chopped my hair off. I stopped her several times. She didn't listen. Now my hair is just touching my shoulders and I'm trying my best to get my hair length back. I'm seeing another hairdresser now so I hope my hair will start growing faster. Plus I noticed that vitamins help with growing your hair too..

Alicia xo: I’ve always wanted long hair but my hair has never gone past shoulder length it’s so annoying I have spent so much money on shampoos and deep conditioners yet it won’t grow..however I haven’t had a hair trim in 5 years so I’ll try that and protective hairstyles.. thank you so much for these tips! ❤️

JJ animations: Very helpful. Basically just slow down and pay more attention to my hair. Thanks

Milka - Americus: I relaxed after the big chop and growing my hair out. Was too much work with small kids. But im glad to hear that i am doing well by my hair. Love ur lengtht.

Kinzy B.: I am against washing my hair weekly, that can strip your hair's natural chemicals. But the rest I can abide by.
