How To Dye Hair At Home (Coloring Tips & Tricks)

Hey guys, in this hair dye tutorial, I will show you how to color your hair at home using drugstore box dye kits. These kits are actually very easy to use and I'll also share some tips and tricks for brunettes. ♥

The hair dye color I used: L'Oreal Casting Creme 503 Golden Chocolate

♥ Visit my blog for more pics and tips: http://www.justbebexo.com/hair-dye-tip...

This video will cover the following:

1. How to prepare before coloring.

2. Tools you need before, during, and after coloring.

3. How to apply haircolor step-by-step.

4. Tips to avoid haircolor disaster.

5. How to choose your color.

My hair coloring tips work best for dark hair or brunettes like myself. When choosing a hair color, go with two shades lighter or darker than your current hair color. At-home hair dye is perfect if you're doing a single process or one color. If you want to add highlights, ombres, or go from black to blonde. Seek a professional hair color technician. I don't want to be held responsible for any mishaps. lol

Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll address it in my future root touch-up video where I show you how to go from back hair to brown hair. I just need my hair to grow out a bit more for that video.

Hey guys, I've been dyeing my hair for several years now, so in this video I'm going to share some tips and tricks on how I freshen up my hair color. I know I need a color touch out when my ends are lighter than my roots, and the reason for that is the ends are more porous, so they tend to pick up more color from the last dye job and, of course, another indication is, if my roots Are showing the first tip is to prep your hair by keeping it moisturized so the night before skip shampoo and let the grease take over what this will do is it will keep your lips moisturized so that the colors will sleep in evenly and also the natural Oils will protect your skin from possible irritants in the dye. If you have long hair like I do, then you can easily miss a spot while you're dyeing your hair. So one of my favorite tips is to divide your hair into 4 equal quadrants and work with one section at a time: split your hair in half and then split it again on each side, roll up each section of hair and secure them with hair place when You'Re done, you should have something that looks like this. If you were jewelry now is the best time to remove them, because you don't want the dye to stain or damage them so remove your Aryans, your Rings, necklace and whatever you're wearing. Since I will be using brown hair dye, I like to protect my skin. So what I do is, I apply petroleum jelly along my hairline, and what this will do is it will prevent the dye from staining your skin if you're using box dye for the very first time, stick with your true hues, so go with two shades darker or Lighter than your current hair color, since I have long hair, I will need two box dyes and the one I'm using is the L'Oreal testing pink gloss in the shade golden chocolate. This is a semi-permanent hair dye that contains no ammonia, so it will just give my hair a darker tint and some shiny. Almost all drugstore hair dye kits come with the same thing. What you get is the developer, the cream, the conditioner, the pamphlet and the gloves. The instruction says you can just add the cream to the developer and shake the bottle, but what I like to do is I like to pour everything into a mixing bowl so first, pour in the developer next break the seal with the opposite side of your cap And squeeze the cream into the mixture then grab your brush and mix them together. So I'm trying very hard here not to stain my desk. It'S best to actually mix this away from anything white, because if you get it on the white furniture, it's going to stain now that the mixture is ready. You want to put on your gloves, because, even with the brush application, this can still get messy if you're dyeing your hair for the first time, keep calm and start with the hairline saturate your brush with a dye and apply this all over your hairline from the Front to the back, this part is very important because if you were to tie your hair back into a high ponytail, your hairline is going to show so getting a nice. Even coverage here is crucial. Next, it's time to work on each section, so just brush your hair first to make sure it's smooth then apply the hair dye. When your hair is completely saturated, you want to grab a wide toothed comb and brush it out to evenly distribute the product, wrap your hair back up and put it into a button release. Another section and repeat: I've always used stop start because I always do a single process. But if you're looking for highlights on braids or even going for a dramatic color change, then I highly recommend going to a professional when my hair starts to look for a C and dull and purple shampoo isn't doing this job. I like to use a semi-permanent hair dye to correct the shade. This will keep my color fresh until I get another root touch-up after you're done with each section. You want to release your hair and gently massage your scalp. This will generate heat and will also ensure that you get a nice even coverage to further retain the heat I like to wrap a plastic bag around my head, and this does help with the dyeing process. Another thing is: if you're going to walk around your house for twenty minutes, you don't want to get your furniture messy so doing this also prevents you from making a mess so leave the dye in your hair for the recommended time. This one is 20 minutes. After that, wash your hair and to use the conditioner for the sake of this video, I just washed my hair in the sink and blow-dried it. So I'm wearing the same shirt. But here are the results. In my opinion, the L'Oreal casting cream gloves did leave a nice gloss on my hair and it also corrected my shade by making it a few tints darker. As for the color, it is a pretty chocolate brown, but I'm sure this color will fade to a medium brown soon. So I hope you guys enjoy this tutorial. If you did don't forget to give this video a thumbs up and if you're feeling lucky L'Oreal is also having a sweep scape for this product and a gift card this up for takes. So, if you're interested in entering I'll put a link to it in the video description below thanks so much for watching and I'll talk to you later, ciao subscribe to my channel to be notified of new videos and don't forget to check out my previous tutorials

Some Guy: Wow. I've been looking up videos because my wife wants me to dye her hair and I have to say that your video is the easiest wait to do it. Thank you. I was worried she'd end up looking like a purple minion. Cheers.

Jasmine Perfect: I've used this tutorial the past 2 times doing my hair, with perfect results. the video was to the point and easy to follow while coloring my hair. Thank you ☺

Laura Jackson: This was so clear and has made me less scared to go do mine now, wish me luck!

Kelsey Fuglestad: Is quarantine getting anyone else ready to full send a dye their hair

GENIE LAMP: I always get my hair dyed at home, but I've never tried sectioning my hair into smaller sections like you! I think sectioning hair into four smaller sections to make it easy to work with is the greatest tip in this video :) And I think using the mixing bowl and brush also makes the whole process easier.

Caroline And Saskia: I've got a few questions: 1) Does semi-permanent dye last as long on blondes as it says on the package and if not how many times longer does it last? 2) What are the best and the worst brands of hair dye? 3) Is your hair damaged after doing semi-permanent dye?

jackiesmith02: Dyed mine for the first time today. I was freaking out before watching this. You made it look so easy and it definitely made it easier for me. Thank you!!

i write stuff: I love that this is less than 6 mins, no non sense talking and just straight to the point tutorial.

Katherine Aguirre: Hi Née, I just wanted to thank you so much for your video! I faced the maiden voyage of dying my hair last night (to cover up the white hairs I now have ) and your tutorial was a huge blessing! You explain everything so well- step by step. The only tip I would add is to put on a long sleeved smock or bottom up shirt. Getting black hair dye on my arms was not good. Lol! I went through so many tutorials and yours is hands down the best available- thank you!!! ‍♀️

Yomamalikesbacon: This is SUCH a helpful tutorial and gives me more confidence to dye my hair for the first time at home! Thank you!

Est Crit: i just did my wife's hair. Still waiting for the 30 min to see the result. Its so easy i cant believe how easy that was. Ive tried coloring her hair before, and those were not great. Right now im not sure if your tutorial was really really helpful, or maybe i completely messed her hair up, because of how easy that whole process was. I mean it didnt take time at all. compared to my previous attempt on coloring her hair. I hope this works. Thanks a lot for the tips and techniques. I get to spend quality time with my wife without having panic attack

Tippy Wong: seemed so easy for you! and no dyed stained on your t shirt at all, what an expert well done

Antoinette Herrera: This video is so helpful, thank you so much for posting it. I just dyed my hair today using these tips and I still can't believe how easy the process was.

Sara KG: This helped :) it's going to be my first time using the casting gloss by l'oreal. I usually use the Manic Panic dyes to achieve my red hair ( no bleach so it blends with my natural brown hair to create a nice dark red. ) but it doesn't last as I long as I hoped for so I turned to this l'oreal semi permenant. I choice the redish tint auburn. Hope it goes well :D

STAR THE WOLF: Thank you bebexo, i have been dying my hair for a couple of years but always struggled with parting my hair properly, this video is so helpfull. My favourite hair dye is also loreal dark brown. I think its the best and i've tried few!!

Creative Cheers of Fashion Laura Flohr: Great tip, dividing your hair in four parts. I only dye my roots and my hair is a little bit shorter than yours but it is very difficult to dye the roots in your neck when you have all that hanging over it . So this will certainly help. Thanks! Looking forward to new tutorials ! I follow you for soms years now so the oldies I know already.

Carmin Balderrama: Love love love!!! I love the way you explain yourself so quick and efficient, easy to understand. This is thee best video I've ever seen in how to dye my hair. You are beautiful smart and I trust 110% percent your technique is gonna stick and my hair is gonna be coming out as perfect as yours. +Bebexo

Lauren .x.: Thank you for the tips! I dyed my hair for the first time today and your video really helped me. My colour has come out lovely! :)

Maggie: ooo I'd love to try this, cause it looks so easy and gives amazing results!!!! :D your hair looks so good <3

Sleepless Soul: Love watching this video. You make it easy for me to dye/color my hair. Going to the parlor for celophane has become costly that I need to do it myself. I will try using Loreal for the first time. Thanks a lot Bebexo

Katie Lipton: Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm about to dye my hair on my own for the first time. Let's do this!

Christina Voda-Forde: Thank you so much! Loved your video! I have very long hair and your tips were excellent and helped me learn how to dye my hair on my own. Thanks again!

Kelly Harper: I have extremely long hair also. Plus my hair is naturally curly. I have been wanting to dye it for a couple years now but was too intimidated thinking that I was going to mess it up. Your video was very helpful, thank you. I'm excited to see what other ideas you have.

m.areli.z: Hi Bebe! First I want to start by saying how much I love your videos. I specially love the hair braiding and updo tutorials. I rarely comment because I have very little to say. However, this video really caught my attention and concern. As an aspiring professional colorist I feel the necessity to correct the information you have shared with many do it yourselfers. My intention is not shame you but to inform you and those who are watching this video. First, you don’t “dye” your hair. You “color” your hair. The professional wording is coloring not dying. You dye Easter eggs or a t-shirt but you don’t dye your hair. You color it. Next, hair coloring is a very complex and should be left to the professionals. Yes, even if you are still trying to touch up your roots or trying to stay in your same natural color level. The reason I say this is because there is more to color than just buying a box and mixing the contents provided. Many of the times when you buy a box hair color kit you are dealing with metallic salts.  Metallic salts or gradual haircolors are very harmful to the hair because they create buildup and are very difficult to remove if you ever want to lighten your hair, do highlights, or change colors. Box hair color is just very unpredictable. And even though most claim to have no or low percentage of ammonia are not telling the whole truth of their content.  Please, please, please… don’t post more DIY hair color videos. Instead of helping, you are misinforming many of your viewers who look up to you with your routine and tips. Yes your hair is very beautiful. But you must know that not everyone’s hair is the same. One size does not fit all. From previous videos I’ve seen, I know you are very big on conditioning and taking care of your hair and that is why I encourage you to talk to a professional get educated on the subject and do some research. Again, hair color is best if left to the professionals.

Asclepius: Thank you! I do not always have time to sit in a salon when I am busy with exams! I never thought to use the brush to apply dye, I always just rubbed it in with my hands... always seemed to miss spots! I feel like this is going to ensure that when I have to use a box (started going grey at 28) that I will be able to get to everything :)

Pomphret: Thank you for this superb video. I have been dyeing my wife’s hair during this pandemic and this video helped me remove the kinks in the procedure. Especially, the part about starting from the roots (I used to do top down). And the tip about Vaseline to protect the skin.

Julie: Loved it! Simple and easy (or so it seams, I'll find out when I try it myself, ha!) Question: Do you test it before use? The box *stresses* you to test it first incase of allergies but it just sounds like a drag

Geri Henry: That was a great tutorial, thank you! I usually do everything the same except I had no idea petroleum jelly was useful to prevent staining the skin with hair dye. Subscribing. ;)

Margerette Cruz: this is my first time dyeing my hair on my own and your video helped a lot and i don’t have to worry if i did something wrong thank u :)))

Meli art and architecture: Because of you and this video, I finally did it for myself for the very first time, waiting for the results

Stephanie Doublait: Thanks for this video, I am a newbie to hair dying and this is exactly what I needed to get started.

All-that-glitters 93: My hair is just as long as yours and up until this past year I've had my mom dye my hair so my first experience was a nightmare! I got hair dye all over the place! I didn't section off my hair like you did and now I see that it helps. This will definitely save me from dying everything purple next time.

JACLYN JT: Easy instructions! Thank you!

lac92576: OMG How do you do this so perfectly? My hair is down to my waist and I need 2 towels around me and towels all over the floor - and I still manage to get the dye everywhere :( I need to try the mixing bowl method, too. Would a plain plastic bowl and, say, a paint brush work as well? I don't have any beauty supply stores around where I live, so what would a good alternative be? :(

PhineaBlue: Very helpful, I‘m just about to dye my hair :) I used to go to a stylist but this is just too expensive and I even had a color accident at my favorite salon... Plus I always receive positive comments if I dye my hair myself. Everybody thinks I spent a big amount of money at a salon where in reality I just paid a few bucks and dud it myself ☺️

Merari G: I really like the color! thanks for this video, I've never dyed my own hair before so this video really helped me get an idea how I can do it.

Lee G: Thank you!! That's a great idea to buy the mixing bowl instead of using the bottle... I'm definitely going to do that.

Maheen A: Do not start at the hairline! If you have virgin hair start at the bottoms and leave about 1-2 inches of roots, then put dye on the roots. So basically leave the dye on roots for half the time compared to the rest. You will get bright roots if you don't!

Simone Vuong Hoang: I love your hair! It looks super smooth and silk. Do you have a video of your hair care routine? If not I'd really like to see one <3

Maria Violet: Красивый цвет получился! Спасибо за метод окрашивания - интересный, надо будет применить!

xxxcherrysakuraxxx: Looks good nee! Love your new hair color! Pretty as always. :)

Laura Sejdaj: Just dyed my hair so excited to see the results thanks for your help

Kaylee Adams: I've been needing the video! Been box dying my hair for several years, this gave really good tips!

lineylovesbeauty: I was just going to color my hair at home for the first time and saw this video. So glad I'm a subscriber and saw this! Hope mine turns out as good as yours!

Michelle Huang: I'm so excited to hear you're doing a root touch-up video! I've been waiting for a good one :)

Seattle Rain: Thank you so much for your video ( : I'm gonna take a deep breath n not panic like you said The hair colour you picked looks really nice for you ( : Thanks again ☘️️

Yemeema: Easiest tutorial I've seen till now.... Thank you so much!

Yemeema: Easiest tutorial I've seen till now.... Thank you so much!

Alice Liggins: Such a useful tutorial thank you so much!

Quinn Burnette: When you pour everything into the mixing bowl do you use the second box or do you stick with the first box..??? Hopefully that makes sense - I am dyeing my hair for the first time and I am doing TONS of research on it

Alisha Buggins: Love the new color. I've been thinking of coloring my hair for a while now - will be checking for this at the next shopping trip.

Caitlin Brown: Watching this video during lockdown , because I need to take matters into my own hands and dye my hair this was super helpful ! Wish me luck

Houda Khazraj: This Is amazing xx I'm A bit too young to dye my hair but I have older cousins who may wanna use these tips xx your an amazing YouTuber cxx. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yoenia Bestard: First time dying my hair and your tips helped alot!! Thanxs so much!

Julia: This is really helpful because my hair color is similar to yours, as I just lightened it over a month ago and now my darker roots are showing. Thanks!!!

Hope Vale: Thank you so much for this video. You made my anxiety about dying my hair for the first time go away.

marieclaire: That colour actually looks great :)) I would love to die my hair one day even if it's not permanent but my cousin always tells me it will dry my hair and make it dead. plus my parents constantly tell me I should be 'happy with my own hair colour'. ehh black hair is fine for now hahahaha

Linn Jerkku: Im going to dye my hair today and this helped so much!!! Thanks

C Yuasa: Excellent tutorial. She gets to the point without a lot of extra unnecessary talking. Thank you!!

Tess Elizabeth: I've been dying my hair for a while and it's always turned out fine but I felt like I was putting in way too much effort. This really helped.

Meredith Mackay: LOVE the idea of putting the products in a mixing bowl first!! 32 years old and never have I ever thought of that :)

Jelina Emilia: Thanks for this toturial I know it's an old video but I've never done it before and it turned out great!!!

Ricardo Moran: I love this video you make it sound easy for me to understand how to dye my hair thank you

Terry F: How do you keep from having your ends breaking from the dye? Is it a timing issue?

niki lnrd: I would like to try the Casting Creme Gloss too, since the result is so amazing!

Kristiyan Valnev: Madam I just admire you how you do this all alone . I just finished stylist courses and I find it really hard Good Job

Pao´s Beauty channel: Can you do a hair care routine please ! You have perfect hair

DIY Fab: Wow amazing results! I’m going to try this thanks. I really struggle dying the back of my head

SteviiLove: I've always dyed my own hair, but since my hair got long I don't do it as often as I used to. it's been over a year since I last went all red and I have been pushing it off out of fear of missing spots but I'm so glad I found this! now I'm not so bervouse and may not wait for my fiancé to help

Amie Colemam: Great video you covered everything I needed to know thanks

saifai: Great tips! Coloring long hair, especially a dark color can be tricky. That creme looks awesome, and your hair looks great. I'll have to try it next time I color mine.

Sharya Shamall: I love how you coloured your hair so evenly

AyeItsBrooke: Thanks this helped! Im gonna dye my hair tomorrow and I'm kinda scared but this helped! Knowing me I'm probably still gonna fail tho xd

Munira Kamal: I'd live to try this since it would be my first hair dying experience!

ThexBlackxKitty: Does this really work? Does the dye reach all your hair? I read about the method of separating into quarters, but then it goes on to separate diagonal strands and dye them, and it is recommended to finish with the hairline because it absorbs the dye faster. How much do you have in a box? Mine is usually about 100ml (developer+dye) and the consistency isn't as liquid as yours. It isn't nearly enough to soak all the hair into it. My mum does my hair and I couldn't imagine doing it myself although I really want to.

Jennie R Jane: This is perfect with very easy and clear instructions

florenna: Also, plastic bags are actually not supposed to be used with chemical dyes (Only with herbal dyes like henna.), they can actually be dangerous by increasing the risk of allergic reaction (as the chemicals are trapped there close to your scalp)!! Oh, and Casting Creme gloss is often permanent and not semi-permanent, as it seems in your case since you have roots (unless you used another dye before) :)

Maryam Mahmood: Great tutorial! Worked out for me! Only problem was shud have washed my hair the night before Other than that tysm!!!❤️

blueberrie143: This was a very helpful video! Thank you!

12cares: I just dyed my mom's hair for the first time ever lol this helped a lot, hope I did good ^-^

emma8908902722: Thanks to this video, I had the confidence dye my own hair so thank you x

thunder2195: watching this before I'm going to dye it purple. the selections seem difficult but I guess... btw, don't mind the rude people, stay who you are cuz you're awesome! ^^

Karla Simpson: Wow! Great tutorial. I am coloring my hair for the first time. It is stale brown a and if would like to freshen it up a little. I am worried that it will turn out red. Any tips? Thanks so much!

jade hernandez: This was so helpful, thank youuu!

Neveen Farajian: thank you really ... finally a video simple to understand

Esther H.: Doesn't dyeing your hair damage it? How do you keep your hair so smooth?

Jennie ELFKONIC 💙♥️: Thx so much!! I was actually thinking of having touch up on my hair at a salon but it costs so much :( but now I can do it at home thx to u!!!

SushiSims: Soooo pretty! I love the color so much on you~ I've been wanting to dye my hair, not sure what color though! >. <

Susan Jedren: Your video and explanation are great. I have always gone to the best NY and CA salons. Your explanation encourages me to try it myself or with a friend. Thank You.

sconsi9005: Beautiful job! How do you do it without getting one drop on your shirt. Very impressed!

periwinklestwinkle1: You can also use one of those reusable shower caps if you don't want to use a plastic bag

ShopaholicAddict Laura: Lovely colour! Keeping changing my mind whether go dark or go caramel hahaha

brightphoebus: I just did mine today, only i neglected checking any videos first and just did it. The only things I should have done but didn't, were to comb the colour through, not wash my hair first, and put a bag over it. It turned out quite dark, which I like, but lighter than I'd like at the roots, so I'm considering doing the root ends again with the same permanent dye I used today... Any opinions or advice there?

Dr. Dayyanah Karim: This is just what ive been looking for, thank you soooooo much!

Philip Hamilton: You forgot to mention that since it's inevitable you will get dye on your shirt, wear an old shirt you don't care about, that you would not hesitate to throw away. You should also cover the ground & desk/counter with newspapers or plastic.

Isabel Cervantes: I love your hair! Maybe could you do a video for Easter hairstyles? That would really help me. Thanx!

saarah: watching this even though my mom will never let me colour my hair

Isabel Bagioli: love the videos... I too have long hair and its fun to try new styles.  thank you!!!

lindie langenhoven: im dying my hair tomorrow for the 1st time. this video was very helpful thank u:)
