Here'S a great question from Michelle: hey, Sam, hey Michelle! I too would love some tips on thick, coarse hair with a client that wants weight removed, maybe even layers without losing length, removing bulk without a shelf. So it moves thanks, a bunch Michelle. It'S all about disconnection check it out. Look at this section I have in the back. You ever have clients walk in whether their hair is medium length, long short and they grab the back of their head and say: take this bulk. Take this weigh it out. Here'S a great way to do it, take a triangle section, maybe mid occipital or below, depending upon the density and how much weight you want to take out the thicker. The hair is the higher the triangle section can go you're going to take this section, I'm going to encourage you to elevate this all up at once. So the degree of elevation is vertical, so you see that it's all up against their heads and that look how I have that elevation on a vertical position see that vertical. That'S where you want to bring that elevation. Okay, now once you're here, you determine how short you want. The inside of this look at see where that's going to be short inside, make sure you give yourself enough length that you get enough roundness enough bend. Bevel, don't hold your hand here. Can you see if I hold it there, look how short you're going to be you're going to lift this entire section up and then I'm going to encourage you just cut a straight horizontal line now watch what happens when I release this. It'S going to move from short to long you've taken all the weight out here, but, most importantly, you're, giving them more silhouette, so they get more roundness. This is what I have found to be very helpful, taking out weight. Imagine this one link Bob one length and she's complaining about how much weight and how much drying and weight she has back in this area a lot of work back. There simply take your one wing Bob. Take your triangle section elevate that up take off to the desired length: release it put everything over that and cut your one wing Bob you've taken the weight out on the inside, but you still have the illusion of everything. Looking 1 1 length easy make. It'S an easy care for the client and, let's blow drying time, that's what I do in order to release weight. So I hope that helps you out and keep the questions coming. Michelle

dandy d: A wonderful explanation . I have this problem in every time get cutting my hair and ends up with either bulky hair or slicing my hair . With this technique you don't have cutting the cuticle leaving a bad shape for the clients .. Thank you Sam

M M: wow!! i have very thick, long hair and this is the part about my hair that always bugs me. i just tried it with a small section thinking it wouldn't make any difference but it feels much lighter and the shape is definitely much fuller at the back. thank you for this tip ! i wish i had known this years ago <3

julianne lord: I love your videos! I cannot always afford to get amazing hair cuts from artists like you- but this helps me make some style on my own- thanks for empowering fellow stylists and average joes like me!

Neeraja B: Amazing video. I just tried this technique today. It turned out great. It treamed hairs, maintained length, gives soft beachy waves, coarse hairs thin out and looks more natural and most important it really cut down that extra hair weight on scalp. My hair length is upto my waist. It literally removed half of my hairs yet maintained length, add more texture and movement to hairs. It really feels Great. I was about to do clean smooth headshave today because of this extra hair weight, which causes severe headache. So basically this technique literally saved me from headshave.

dc2010ist: Very articulate explanation, Sam's videos are always the best!

I’d rather be sleeping: Thank You for solid, quick, uncomplicated information to use in real life client specific situations. Bless you

naimemora: Wow, thanks a lot! I "suffer" from thick coarse hair, and always wonder why when I get my haircut it's always the front, and I have all of this hair in the back, I think begginers should take notes :D

Imanne: i use this technique on my own hair as i want to keep it long without the weight. part the sides, top and bottom to grab a section of the “core” hair and cut it super short. i have to do this as my head is small and my hair extremely thick. works great and as sam says here creates the “illusion” that everything is seamless.

Jessie: What about taking bulk at on the sides? do you like you have to use a different technique than this one for the sides

skaniol: Uh-oh! How do you attach the head back to the body of the client? I have to do it properly or my client will be mad at me when the general anesthesia wears off.

Brittany Wright: Thanks so much!!!! I do not cut hair, but I have thick hair. I have to beg and plead with stylists not get scissor happy with my hair "texturizing" and "removing the weight" the best haircuts I get are always simple and quick with minimal techniques and cutting!

Waiting2soar13: Wow. Amazing!! This worked great

Dale Clark: thank you Sam, this is a simple approach that I like and will use frequently.

Samaher Bruns: Hi thank for the great video, how can I remove bulk or weight from the back ( back and crown part)of men’s hair ?

inosingenglish: I have thick coarse asian hair, I did this today and can attest it works a treat! But I would say I took more hair off than in this tutorial but I had to be extra careful of the positioning to make sure I didnt mess it up, I took an hour tieing it up but only 5 mins cutting it, though it did take me longer because I did it myself.

Tracie Naegle: Great idea, this is exactly what my daughter is looking for.

Jasmin Jasmin: I just thinned out my hair . Turned out pretty good! First time!!

A goel: YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! Just tried it and it worked PERFECTLY! I have wavy bottom heavy hair and this worked perfectly. Texturizing works but really damaged my hair and this works better anyways.

Marcella Cheaure: I agree with the folks here who say that head is a not a real representation of thick, coarse hair ... I think those of us with thick, coarse hair know this. However, my current stylist does a version of this and it helps ... somewhat. I'm still looking for a method (and a stylist, for that matter, that can give me what I want). I've been unhappy with what various stylists have tried on me for over 13 years!!! Enough with adding layers and razoring and on and on. I've tried it all and it doesn't work. Wish stylists would simply admit they can't do what I ask rather than promise me they could and then botch it up. If someone asks me what my current "style" is, I always say "growing out". Seems I'm always growing out a disaster of one sort or another.

liam: I will never cut hair in my life yet I am here watching this at 2am

Shakti Kashyap: That's what I'm searching for from a year on internet and now i found this...‍♂️

Jazmin Lopez: I have a lot of hair, very thick, wavy curly and frizzy, the back of my head (top and mid parts) are the worst parts. I love long hair because it weighs my hair down to where it will not get too puffy, which it still does but not as much when shorter. I want to style it and feel it to be thinned out without actually thinning it out. I need help and advice. please!

Mikaela Nai: Would this technique work on thick curly hair? If not could a similar process be used

Lettuce Warship: My sister in law wants me to thin her hair. Out of the 11 years I've done hair....I've never seen such think hair. It's rediculous. My issue is she wants her hair thin but she also wants absolutely no volume. She said she can't stand the mushroom head look and wants a very flat cut but thinned out. This looks like an amazing idea but I have to wonder if volume will be added where the shortest cut is. I'd have to do this and go over the rest with thinning sheers as well. Finish off with a razor to blend it as well even. Any other tips?

Samia Abril: does it work for thick curly hair? i envision it making my hair in the back look bulkier/ wider

JayKai HealthLifeStyle: Cool tip. Sadly I am not positive this would work as well for me. Is my hair coarse? Yes. But it’s not thick. I do t have a lot of hair but my coerce hair has weight so I end up with no volume and fluffy ends.

Pinkstrawberryz: Do long graduated raised layers help blend this method?

Rachel S: would this be appropriate for mid back length hair?

J O: I would of never thought of taking bulk out like that. I'm use to either slicing or using my razor to remove bulk. what if they have the weight on top what would u do then?

MARIA MARTIN: hello Sam. I wanted to know how can you avoid your wrist from hurting when you hold your shears on what is a technique I can use to remember how to hold my shoes so I don't hurt my wrist

Cathy Lee Grantham-Schreifels: I have a question about using hair clippers. Instead of starting at nape and going above occupital bone, what would happen if I began using clippers just above the bone and continuing down through hair at nape. Would that leave me with a longer hairline at nape? I have a pixie, but it needs tightening up. I want sheared (#8 guard) sides and back with longer top and nape.

OH CAROL SHOW: Great tip...thanks xo Carol

oribel marie: awesome!! ❤️

Melinda Zupan: just had a client who wanted her hair thinned with out losing any length around the  perimeter. wish i would have seen this video. I don't think she was happy with her finished cut. she said it was "okay"

Tess M: LOVE your shirt and thanks for the awesome tip!

Joel Jose: how do you get rid of hair on the head from the roots to make it less dense

JC: love ur bracelet. and smart tip. thanks

Wolfnrun: My hair feels heavy on the right side but light on the left. I know I got a braid cut on the left side but there wasn't that much hair there by the end of my braids time being there. I wonder if all hair growth is different? I have 3 feet of long hair so it makes me wonder

mini yooongiggle: i just got a bit of a problem here. The thickest part of my hair is the outer layer not the inner. And i think even if they tried to trim the inner part, it's still volumptous.

Dejan Jovic: great tip,tnx

caramella: hi, I want to explain this technique to my stylist. is there a name for this technique?

lizbeth navarrete: Is this technique good for curly hair ??

ENO AFIA: Great video.

Li li: He's really a Master

J Greenwalt: Hi Sam , where do u buy your mannequin heads? I'm a cosmetology student and I would like to get 1 before school starts so I can do hair styling practice. Thank u!

fluffyspunsugar: Next time, please use someone with really thick coarse hair. THAT mannequin head is NOT thick coarse bozo hair, like mine.

caitlin: two words: this works

sheila crawford: Can you do this technique with curly, coily hair?

morgan ji: 超級世界級美髪大師,讚,

genie121: I got a one length bob which is growing out. And because it was just a straight cut and I got thick hair- there’s a lot of bulk! So I need to go back to the stylist and tell her to take the bulk out! And give it more movement.

ila ila: Thankyou for your advice! I have put up a video of me following your advice and some others too - but wanted to contact you to check I had put in the right amount of info etc and check it's okay with you? I can't find your youtube contact so if you message me I will be able to reply and ask you about it. For now - I put your name, the vid title in the description. I can add more or take some out if this is preferable - thanks.

Tink_kelly.m: I have extremely thick hair and I also have a triangle under cut which has helped but it’s still really thick but I don’t want layers what do I do to thin it out more

Yukonory: Yeaaah, DON'T DO IT! Let me be your cautionary tale... For all you girls who are like me, tryin to save a buck and all that "do it yourself" crap. It will take me a year to wear my hair down again because I now have very visible short hair at the back

Michelle Justice: I was looking up videos to help with taking weight off my bangs. They're really thick and my name is Michelle. I think it was fate. ❤️

Tanya Loreal Salon: Amazing

hassan ghori: I jst subscribe ur chanel and ur videos r jst waoo and informative,I have a question I usually blow dry me hairs at home without using any serum, kindly tell me best serum name to apply on my hairs before blow dry

Maria Kapatos: Hi Sam I am so glad I gave come across your video. As having very thick hair and never having it layered by different hairdressers I would so line to know if I can do same at home . Thanks so much Maria

Marilyn: Sam V illa you are a Genius!!!!!!!!

ilovebats10: Maybe not the place for this question, but how do I ask my stylist to do this?

lizzyc87: so that section will be totally disconnected right? you do this at the end, after youve done your layers?

Rina Mae: What if I just went into the salon. All he would do is one cut and it would be fixed. I’m curious on the cost lol

Joanna Kristmann: I really want my hair cut like this but I'm not sure how to ask for it

Tamar Nessim: How much weight does that really take off?

lilly roon: My hairdresser told me I would like Cleopatra, so I canceled it.

leanna hamm: My weight is in the top front part of my hair?

steve hau: Hey Sam....I like the #Bracelet u got there....!! Can i have one of those in gold colour... :)

Marilyn Schmidt: I thought he was going to get rid of the bulk with thinning scissors not just snip a little piece off

sarah: Someone come over to my house and do this for me I can't reach/see back there!

Ringlet Reina: Wow. Sam Villa really be rocking my lil Cosmo brain in 2:32.

fluffyspunsugar: That is not thick coarse hair on that manneguin head. So tired of these demo vids claiming to thin out thick coarse hair and they don't even use the right hair type.

Romans116: Isn’t that the same as 180 degree cut, so basically long layers

Malik Ehsaan: lovely bro nice

Omega33: I vont to cut and style khair -zohan

Bernadette Salazar: Can I be one of your hair models?!

BlueWolf2238: What’s the name of the music in the intro

Julian Cabral: traducir o subtitular por favorrr!!

lilly roon: The hairdressers in Bulgaria don't know abt this method. The just know how to take your money.

Holly Wednesday: I cannot seems to find a hairdresser than knows how to deal with course thick hair , not I. Colour not in cut , do you know of a good stylist in Australia, I am in Melbourne.
