How To Cut Hair From Long To Short Without Freaking Out

Picture this, someone with really long hair struts up to you and says, "Chop it all off!" It's a loaded situation with many variables and a high chance for a client freak out. Sam Villa says the first thing to do is try to convince them to take it slow and work their way up to a shorter length in 2-3 cuts, because if you lop it off then and there, you will probably never see them again. Villa's "The Convertible" DVD highlights a disconnected cut that can be done on any hair length. A cut so versatile it can transition with the client from long to short because it looks great at any length. And, because it's disconnected, it's really easy to recut. That's the ideal scenario, but life isn't always ideal, so if the client refuses your professional advice and you have no choice but to whack off a huge mass of hair, here's a tip to get you through the task at hand. After a deep breath (to psych yourself up, because there will be drama), pull all the hair back into a ponytail at the back of the head and cut it off. It's faster than taking section after section and having to comb through the long hair before cutting it. Removing the excess hair makes it so much easier to cut a new shape and be consistent with the sections.

Here'S a question from Lisa hi, Sam, I'm a colorist who started cutting about two years ago and I'm struggling a bit when I have a client that has long hair and wants to go short. I literally freak out what suggestions do you have so that I can end up with a good cut every time I freak out so bad? I don't even know where to start. Thank you Lisa. First of all, my dear take a deep breath, no worries. My dear. I used to be the same way, but here's why I was the same way because I didn't know this hot little tip that I'm just about to give you see they would walk in with hair. This long and say I want a little pixie haircut. So I do what I was taught start in the back with all this long hair start taking it short. It was just too much long hair to deal with here's. What I want you to do to set yourself up to win on this. I want you to simply take the clients hair, knowing they're gon na, go very sure. Okay, you're gon na go in pull all the length back and take it off. Josh. Take it off now, when you take off all of this length. Look what I have left to manage it's a lot easier for me to manage and be consistent when you're, taking something short, trying to take such long hair and manage that and be consistent cutting. It short, it's very difficult. So, in answer to your question, reach back before you cut, take a deep breath, smile trust and believe in yourself and just cut the darn thing after you do that you're gon na find you have less hair to work with. That'S a lot easier to be consistent in cutting something short. I hope that helps you out Lisa and thanks for the question best of luck to you and remember, take that deep breath.

TA L.: Sam I am with ya on this one! I had a client walk into my school salon with at least 4 feet of hair to cut off for a whole new restyle (right to the back of her knees!!!)....No other student wanted to cut her hair.  I talked to my client, asked her what look she was going for...put it in a pony tail  about 2 inches below the final length I wanted to finish styling it...and lopped it off...Not even a flinch! :O)  She donated her lopped off piece of hair....and that was that! LOL  She loved her finished look...long layers with caramel highlights!  I am not afraid to do it! LOL

EvieOhNooo!: I cut hair for the first time this past weekend. At first I was freaking out, but then I heard Sam's voice in my head saying, "Just cut the darn thing." I was able to calm down and get it done, haha, once I started I was completely in my element, and actually had fun doing it. Thank you for your videos Sam, you're the best!

You see I have to cut my wife's hair tomorrow night so I came here looking for tips, and I just don't see this particular technique going over too well with her. Call it a hunch
