Hi everyone welcome back to another video. Today we have the very anticipated drawing hair tutorial. Since i did my drawing faces tutorial from a few months ago, i get messages and comments on daily telling me. Your characters are all bald and then i need to post the hair tutorial. So here it is. Finally, so disclaimers are. As per usual, i am not a professional. This is by no means. The correct way to draw hair is just how i draw hair. So step number one volume and shape so first you'll need a head for your hair to go on. If you haven't seen my how to draw faces tutorial, i will link it up there now, once that is done, you'll need to establish the volume and get the general shape of the desired hair you'd like to draw this, of course, will depend on many things: hair Type hairstyle the length movement for the sake of this tutorial, we're doing just three different examples of shapes, big, curly, hair, longer straight hair with a fringe and then a short updo, or what some people might call a boyish cut quote and quote. I just call it a short updo, so faintly draw out the general shape on your character and don't forget to sketch out the hair that will go over the face as well over here on the straight hair model. Remember that there will be a slight gap between the hair and the head, as hair normally has a little thickness and layering to it so step 2 hair types before we get into actually drawing out the hair. We need to do some studying. There are many types of hair out there and i feel, like most people, don't even know about the names for them here. You can see some examples of different hair type charts, but i have found through some research that a lot of these charts actually differ from each other when it comes to the type 3 and 4 charts section in some charts. For example, my hair is put down as a 3a, whereas in others i'm a 3c, so um. In light of this, i gathered as many as i could. This last chart is probably the most accurate and easy to analyze that i could find so i made my own little drawing hair types chart out of it. This is how i would draw each hair type. Basically, so in the chart, you'll see that the number is the amount of kinks or curls the hair has and then the letters a b and c are the intensity of said type. If you'd like, you can also download this cheat sheet, i've made for you for your own reference. You can find the link in the description box. So after we familiarize ourselves with all the hairs we can actually move on to drawing some of them step. Three is direction and movement so heading back to our models here you can go in and lightly add arrows that will help. You understand the direction in which your hairs will be moving in with curly hair. This means going in swerves up to the sides and then down eventually, whereas with the straight hair, it goes straight down from the hairline or from the hair parting following gravity, the up do can defy gravity and, depending on style, can also go in different directions. I would recommend you doing some little arrows like this. It really just helps you visualize the direction in which each lock of hair will go step. Four is, then, drawing out the hair to the tips and adding stray hairs, so this again will differ in technique from curly hair to straight hair. This here is a little breakdown on how i normally draw out curly hair. Now this will require some practice. It can help to hold your pencil closer to the top. Actually, you can't be too precious about your lines, the hairier the lines, the better. It looks much more natural to have a bunch of lines than just one solid block for your hair chunks, and this goes for all hairs. Not just curly hair for curly hair make sure to be random. Curly hair is crazy and wild and doesn't exactly have an exact structure to each lock. When it's down trust me, i deal with it every day. It has a mind of its own, so the less precious you are about each curl, the better. So these here are just some examples of how i finish: drawing out hair locks so like right at the end of the hair. This is how i draw the the curls right at the bottom. I normally draw the outlines of the curly main shape first and then afterwards go in to render the hair when i'm in the shading stages, and these sort of strokes are just how i normally do the whole outlines of the hair or the afro or whatever. It is that you're drawing with curly hair, that's normally just how i normally do the outlines for it and, of course, the stray hairs. We can't forget the straight hairs so so then, for straight hair, using the shape we already sketched out, try to go over it and, as i said before, try not to do it all in one. Go lift the pen a lot from the paper and for the ends be random, with the strokes as well. If you look at any picture of hair, you will notice that there are some hairs that are out of place or blowing uh away as secondary actions to the motion. Your character might have been making, whether it be wind or your character's head moving. The hair always reacts to that as well, so it just makes the hair look more natural. If you add some stray hairs to the sides to the edges and even at the ends doing all the hair ends in different directions in random directions. That also helps with selling how realistic the hair looks. It just makes the hair look more natural and less like a lego hairpiece that you can just slide to your character if that makes any sense. So here's just a little breakdown of how i draw the ends of the hair for straight hair and again using different random directions for each flick. I recommend you try this out on a separate piece of paper, as i said before, just so, you can get a bit of the hang of it. As you can see. I do it quite quick now, just because i've just grown so accustomed to it, but it can take a while for you to create that sort of shorthand motion to it. So yeah so firstly go around the general shape that you sketched out earlier and then, when it gets to the ends of the hair, use this technique that i just showed showed you. So personally, i like this sort of look of um having some chunks of hair kind of together and then um, just drawing out stray hairs and and different locks here and there. I just think it looks really natural and it's just the way that i like hair, to look. When i draw it. I feel like a lot of people, get very intimidated when it comes to drawing hair, because it's so many little hairs, but it becomes a lot less stressful. If you break it down into shapes first and then take it one shape at a time, do the same rules sort of apply to this short hairdo. Instead of doing the outline, all in one go, try out many little strokes and be a bit more random with your directions and then, of course, adding the stray hairs, don't be afraid. Also of drawing hair like on top of the face, because hair isn't just uh placed on the top of our heads, we most of us have hair like in front of our eyes, or sometimes just going over over on top of our ears. So don't be afraid to actually cover the head that you've drawn and drawing uh hair hair all over the place, because again the randomer, the better, because it just makes it more natural mother nature - is very random and really not perfect whatsoever. So don't worry too much about making it super clean and perfect. I like to first of all identify the different locks, the different groups of hair. If that makes any sense and then i will render each lock separately when it gets into the rendering and lighting phase but yeah, it's just about breaking down the hair into shapes and working in those shapes accordingly. So now going into lighting and rendering your hair, as i said previously for curly hair, i normally do all my rendering in one go as it is easier than trying to isolate every single curl and lock of hair and rendering each one. But if you're doing some more wavy hair, this is what you're going to want to do. Identify the high parts of the curl and the low parts of the curl. The high parts are where you will leave it white for the highlights, and then you should apply shadows to the inside bits of the curls. Using this as a rule of thumb, when rendering big tight bits of curly hair, i just randomly shade in bits of the hair here and there again being spontaneous and not too precious is important for a more natural and realistic. Look. Basically, if you were to get a little microscope and look into every single curl in that big set of hair, this is what would be going on inside each curl. Every curl has a high and a low, and you just have to shade in the low, and that will immediately make the light bit pop out i'll, go around the hair and just add little curl details here and there and adding shadows to match. Take your time to render out all the hair, it might take you a while the first few times, but once you get the hang of it in your own style, especially it will get easier. Do do then, as a general rule of thumb, the hair that sits under the top canopy layer of hair and around the neck will be the darkest part of the hair. So i normally go in really dark in that area to make the outside part of the hair stand out a bit more so now for straight hair. Just imagine the curl highlight and shadow rules but easier. There are less highs and lows with straight hairs. So just identify your light source first and shade the hair around the area that is being hit by the light again. If this is hard for you to visualize, i would recommend doing this on a separate piece of paper. Uh, like i'm doing here and just doing it on different on, like one lock of hair, identifying the light source and identifying which part of the hair will just have like a stripe of highlight, is just much better for your brain to understand than just going straight Into the model, it's good to practice this flick motion as well with your pencil as it is the main technique that i use in creating nice, blended shadings for the hair. By flick, i mean it's when you press down on your pencil at first when it touches the paper and then flick it up and off the page, creating a sort of change in darkness and opacity in your stroke - and this is a very key base element for Shading, so if you get that down you're set again trying this motion out on a separate piece of paper will be of great help. So now, let's apply these techniques to our straight hair model. Wherever i want there to be a highlight in the hair, i leave that part unshaded and again shading in the area around the neck, really deep will make the rest of the hair stand out as well. Do do so for the short hair we can mix both these techniques, both the things that we learned from the curly hair and the stuff that we learned from the straight hair wherever there is a curl or a change in direction, basically identify the lightest area being Hit by your light source and shade the hair around that keep applying that flick motion with your pencil and try applying that same motion into curls. So in curved motions. So you can actually utilize this flick motion in curly hair as well. Keep applying these shadows and these flick motions in different directions to create a nice blend with your shadows and there you go. I normally go back and add a bunch more stray hairs as it's my favorite part of drawing hair, but that's mainly the gist for drawing hair. Basically, so now for step six, it's homework time, try and use these techniques and steps in other hairstyles. I'M going to show you some examples of braids, ponytails and even box braids, but really just try to follow these steps for any hairstyle. It can be helpful to just go on pinterest or google or whatever, and get some reference pictures first. It can be really helpful to draw from life and practice from reference pictures, so you can at least create some sort of like repertoire in your head of different hairstyles and how each of them behave identify the general shape, then the directions of the hair and then Render it out to your liking, the more you draw, hair, the easier it will get, and these movements and techniques will just become like second nature to you, trust me so and lastly, don't forget to keep practicing. As i always say, practice is really key um. No one is born knowing everything, so if at first you're getting really frustrated, don't worry because practice is really what's gon na get you there. I hope you enjoyed today's video. I hope it was helpful. Thank you. So much for watching and yeah have fun giving all your characters. Some hair, bye,

serendipia: thank you so much for your tutorial i enjoyed drawing since i was a child but this quarantine i started to draw again in years, and i took it more seriously i left it completely when i stopped being a child and started being a teenager because i thought i should do it just if i was perfect and excepcional at drawing and i wasn't so i stopped doing it for fun. now i do it for fun, i'm less critical and hard on myself, i'm open to try everything and tell myself it's okay if i make a mistake, i can try it again, and i found out i'm actually good at drawing. it's like therapy, it doesn't make me anxious and i spend hours and don't notice. i've been searching tutorials to see if i can replicate it for fun and copying actual humans or clothes as references and i'm so happy with the results and feel whole learning. i watched the video yesterday and i tried it and it looks cool and works i practiced today and looks so good again, i'm so happy. thank you
