So should you cut your hair yourself? Should you be cutting your hair yourself? I would say no, don't do it. Nothing is better than a professional doing it.

But if you really have to, there is one thing, with long hair, that you actually can do. It's one chop. So I'm going to show you.

You will need to take all of your hair and actually brush everything. So it's brushing or combing everything forward. Then go all the way to the end. And what happens here, you will take the scissor and just cut that straight off. What that will do is actually keep all the length that you have here, that goes here. So that won't be touched. And once you cut here, it will actually give you some of the layers in front too, at the same time. So in one shot you can actually make your hair look pretty decent.

The second option would actually be to turn your face sideways, comb your hair in the front, meaning bring all the hair towards you, and actually cut the bottom of it in a straight line. And do the same thing on the other side. That's the only way you can actually reach the back of your head. It won't be perfect, but it will help.

But, like I say, nothing is going to be better than the professional. So don't do it yourself.

lemonjellodrop xo: For everyone saying "just pay for a cut"....some people simply can't. I was one of those people for about 3 years. When a haircut costs $30-40, and you have to decide whether you spend that money on food or the heat bill, well...you don't get the haircut.

Sakuems: i remember my 5 last hair experiences to a salon and they screwed up 5 times. and it was expensive. so now i'm screwing up my own hair and it's free.

Lyra: I actually tried the first method last night and it looks brilliant. Maybe he's just worried we'll all realise going to a stylist is pointless for simple cuts and we'll put him out of business? All I want is long hair with layers and now I've learned an incredibly simple and effective way of getting that so I can't see myself going to a stylist again until I want a style that's entirely different.

pokerworld: For anyone wondering if the first method works - I just did it to my wife last night. Took one second. She has long hair down to about her mid back. She wanted three inches off and we did that. Looks great. Saved about $20/$25 it would cost at a salon. Looks like I’m cutting her hair from now on.

Yo Yo: How to do this: don't. But here's how you could do it if you have to. But don't

super: The reason why I'll do it myself because when I tell my hairstylist I want to get rid of the dead ends she ends up cutting a lot of my hair or if I want layers she will cut too much... So YES I will do myself thank you!

Ingrid Nicole: I did this... It worked and my hair came out beautifully layered!!

Brianna McCullough: Step 1: spend 30 minutes curling your hair Step 2: Rip a brush through your hair and destroy those curls

Lily Shimizu: Yeah sorry, I don't care how professional someone is, I never let anyone touch my hair with scissors anymore. I cut my own hair, especially if I only want a trim, and if I mess up I have no one to blame but myself, which is better than being upset with someone else. Plus, it saves money. There is only one other person on this earth that I would allow to cut my hair from now on and that's the hairdresser who gave me my first haircut and many cuts after because he knows what he's doing and he does precisely what I ask and when he has something else in mind, he tells me *exactly* what his plan is and if I'm okay with it, otherwise he doesn't do it. And that is what a great hairdresser does.

Christel Vinot: I'm ALWAYS more satisfied when I cut my own hair over a professional. I don't care if I don't have the proper techniques, it comes out looking great. Hair dressers have made my hair uneven and sloppy. They don't know what I want. I do.

nakedcowgirl: i have been cutting my own hair for 2 yrs and am happier than i have been with virtually all so called 'professional' cuts. If the professionals would listen to clients when we say we want a trim instead of sending us home 4 - 5 inches shorter we wouldn't resort to doing it ourselves (and liking it far better)

Holly Craft!: Perfect! Thank you! My hair were really long (under the bottom) so it was really easy to do with a sharp pair of scissors. I used a plastic clamp (the ones used to close^^ for food, like chips...etc.) to really block the hair and cut straight. I actually started with the second method to get a sideways layering then finished by cutting just a little (putting the plastic clamp just at the limit where the back bottom hair where not clamped any more and cut the rest to get a slight vertical layering. The results is really nice. I did it on dry hair, washed them afterward and it's really nice (at least on wavy long hair)

Margie Arens: Thank you for this video. My daughter has long hair and it was getting hard to  brush. I'm a bit limited on funds the next few weeks, so I did the first option you showed of bringing all her hair forward and cutting it across. I also cut into the line a bit at an angle with the scissors to make the line less blunt. When we combed it back, she was very happy with it! It looks lightly layered around her shoulders! Thank you again.

Maria Hernandez: anyone else watching this in 2020 because we’re in quarantine and in desperate need of a haircut? ‍♀️

Glenda Martin: Seriously, I do know for fact that hair cut works ! During the pandemic, I did cut my own hair. It’s been many years ago, for my 21st. birthday, I wanted a professional stylist, to cut my long hair. Finally, so excited at my appointment, the hair stylist pulled all my long hair up into a ponytail, he took a couple of cuts a crossed my gorgeous long hair. To my surprise my hair fell perfectly in an perfect layered hair style. I’ll never forget that day, I actually paid $50.00 for that experience. Over the years, I have actually cut my hair several time, exactly the way that professional stylist cut my hair. My special gift was having Vidal Sassoon cut my hair. This was in the early 70’s to his salon on Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills,CA. I was celebrating turning 21 yrs old. Sassoon was in his early 30’s, maybe 32 yrs. old. My Birthday is May 8th. Sadly, Sassoon died on May 9th, 2012. That was my best birthday present for turning “21” ! Now, I’m turning 73 years old. I was a ex-stewardess for Continental Airlines. The standard hair style in the 60’s was the “ Bob”. Vidal cut many of the Stewardess hair in his salon. A couple of months, before I was hired, Vidal cut my hair for my “interview hair style” and Continental Airlines approved my hair style. Actually, over the years Vidal had continued cutting my hair, that was eventually my signature hair style. My personal look, my styled hair is still “In Style” after all these years.

Sakura Han: Thank you so much for this! My hair feels SO much better (it had gotten really brittle by this point ) and it looks just fine! not ideal but during lockdown this was a great 'for now' option!

Devil in Her Heart: Hairdressers always ruined my hair... I cut and dye my own hair for three years now and I receive so many compliments on it, way more than when hairdressers did it.

Elaine moonncat: I did this exactly like you said and got a great cut. Better than I had at salons. Thank you. You can do it yourself and it looks just fine. I went from my waist to my shoulders

Judy: Keep in mind people that he is seriously giving you the best advice. I do this with my hair and it works just fine, however some people are uncoordinated and miss the mark. With that said, be thankful w/out the criticism please.<3 Love you all and best of luck cutting your hair! (he doesn't hurt the woman's hair or pull it out, his hands are flawless and very precise) If you guys ever join beauty school, you will know that doing what he does is necessary, trust me I know.

marikie marie: The best hair cut i ever had, was when I did it myself at 17. I watched my friend get hers done...she paid $70 buck plus a tip. I was not about to pay that. Lol so I just keep watching what was done ti my friend. Went home and did it myself with good hair scissors. I got the most compliments about that cut. I've been doing my own hair ever since.

oconcats: Thank you!  I just did it, it took 5 minutes and it's perfect...you are my hair hero!!!  It's very even so, I'm amazed. It cost $100 where I live to cut the ends on long straight hair. I luckily have long straight hair which seems to work well with this cut.

MrDammit2hell: Ok. So I just cut my wife's hair as Pierre showed (one cut) and she loves it. She said it is the best hair cut she has ever had. It totally has all the layers. I can't believe how well this worked. Pierre, you are a genius my friend, thank you. Do you realise how much money in haircuts we've just saved over the next 20 years??

vancitygurl: I think his statement of not cutting ur own hair and going to a hair dresser instead is straight out a gimmick. Salons charge a ridiculous amount of money for cutting hair and half the times they don't even do it properly. I've been to numerous hair dressers to get color and cuts and they rob me so much. One person even burned my scalp so badly that I had blisters in the back of my head for an entire week. I will never go to a salon to get my hair colored ever again because of her. Cutting ur hair at home is safe and cheap. All u have to do is learn from trial and error and cut in small amounts. Over time u'll learn.

Esme B: I model for hair stylists quite often and yes, yes it does hurt. I'm pretty good at keeping a poker face, unlike this young lady! I actually have a lot of short hairs that have grown back after they've been yanked out by overzealous stylists. I find young students tend to be better hairdressers overall as they actually care about the hair, experience apparently leads to a lack of empathy.

Agnes Smith: i agree with vancityguri. I've had hair knee-length and now it's past my hips again. I will never go to a hairdresser again! They just want to CUT CUT CUT! They are butchers. They can't even cut in a straight line. I've been to several and one made me look like a clown after his perm. Stay away from them IF you really want long gorgeous hair. I trim my own hair now and am never disappointed.

Lil T Summerlin: I've been using these techniques for about 12 years on my long, fairly thin, straight, baby fine hair and it looks really good to this day. I stopped using a hairdresser because they wouldn't listen to me and always cut wayyyy too much off.. Doing this I'm in control.

Cassandra Munoz: This helped me so much during lockdowns, thank you!

Monica Marie: Ofcourse he's going to say to go to a professional. If everyone learns how easy it is to cut your hair at home, he's out of job. It's like a plumber showing you how to fix your own messed up pipes.

squeeze louise: I would be very surprised if a hairdresser actually encouraged people to cut their own hair regardless of wether the end result is a good or a bad haircut. They cut hair for a living so they will encourage people to depend on their services. I cut my own hair, with great results and I am very very happy with it and I know that many people do the same. Cutting your own hair is great, saves money and can be fun to learn a new skill(s)! Spend time researching what you want to do and only cut the smallest amount. You may get a happy suprise!

Lynda From Paris Athena: Thanks for this rare video tips given by a real Professional ! I try to grow my hair very long (to the waist) and healthy by regularly & progressively getting rid of split or thin ends so I decided to dust 1cm off every 6 - 8 weeks (out of 2-4cm growth). Haircut are very cheap in Vietnam so it's not about the cost of it but rather because hairdressers can't resist trimming more than it needs : You tell them "1cm every 6 weeks. I just cut them last month" and they will chop at least 2 to 3 cm . So my hair desperately stays about the same length (breast level) for 3 years now. If I don't trim them and let them grow, the ends are just gonna grow super thin like dry rats tails and unevenly which this is not looking good at all. So thanks to your video, I can trim it myself and control how much is taken off. I will still go to the hairdresser to trim the upper layers but forbid them to touch the longest lower layer, i'll cut it myself.

marteenie: I was cringing so much because he brushed and pulls on her hair so harshly. You could see her holding back on saying "ow".

Ann Elizabeth: I did it! It worked great! Thank you for sharing this technique!!! I am impressed!!!

CraftyMaelyss: I've cut my own long hair off a few times and it always turns out fine. Though you shouldn't do it if you can't see the back and it's always a good idea to have a friend who knows what they're doing to fix up the back if it's a bit uneven.

Ashley Walker: I tried this and it worked perfectly!! God bless you♥️

K K: I've been doing the first method for years but just recently realized that because I have a side part the framing around my face isn't even when I do it. So I went to the hair salon for the first time in my life last week and explained what I needed but they hardly knew what I was talking about and gave me a bunch of compliments on my layers. They could have been trying to flatter me but honestly they hardly took any hair off to fix it. It looked almost exactly the same. So I basically paid them $10 for a delicious smelling wash and some reassurance.

RoZenArt: Thank you for this video!! Perfectly simple!!

Brittany Bailey: FYI: I just did the first method on my daughters hair and it came out perfect. Took about 3 inches off.

Sunshine Jaybird: I do this and it works perfect!!!!!

Natalie paad: I did this several months ago and it actually worked pretty well! No, nothing tops a professional and I'll definitely go back at some point, but for now, this is a really good way to fake it til then!!

Erin Elle Mott: I haven't been to a salon in 5 years, I always just cut it myself. Saves me a ton of money

Rosie Linstrum: This tutorial is quick and to the point - and it works! Great!

Mugen: Wow, she looked like she was in pain. Aren't you supposed to be a professional? How can you brush such fine hair so roughly? You'll damage it and give her terrible split ends. See, this is why I don't go to "professional" people to get my hair done anymore.

Hope Stenson: I did this and it turned out great, I have been wanting to cut my hair so bad, since covid I havent had it done in a long time..thank you so much..

Stephany Moreno: what he forgot to mention is if you bring hair forward and cut it it will give you a V shape but very well blended layers throughout. Best way to keep length and add volume hands down! I did it for years myself until I decided to have all one length then I cut it how he explained it secondly and it has grown like crazy, but trimming it every so often and that's how I got rid of my layers!

Kathy R.: This was very helpful to me. Thank you!

dani dani: the hair model knew what she got herself into so dont pity her beautiful curls lol and also this is a tip in case you want to try it at home!some people cut their own hair better than some hair stylists

L E: I’ve done this and it worked a treat. Thank you!

msGvious: I'm on such a tight budget at the moment, definitely would like to know how to trim / tidy my own mane :) so thanks for the demo!!!

Beautifullife89: Every time I go to a hair Solon they always do it different then what I asked or they screw it up. So now I cut my own hair and I color my own hair. I may not be the best on doing it myself, I'm not a professional but it still looks good and I save a ton of money. I'm very happy.

laura fretwell: Thank you. I love the tip and it worked!!

Dana S: Love the honesty! I will go to professional stylist only if I cut my very long hair badly. I tend to stay away because many whack off inches more than I specified. And once it's gone, it's GONE!

shelby marie: Thank you so much for sharing this. I have reasons that I won't go to a professional and always cut my own. It's because of Psoriasis. I won't put a professional through that. I don't want to gross anyone out and would be highly embarrassed anyway. So thank you, thank you so so much!!!

Charlotte L: "Yeah don't do it yourself" = we won't have any clients That guy motivates us so much

Smarti Boo: If you're watching this and want to know how to do it properly > first, have a shower and wash+condition hair. When hair is wet, GENTLY comb it all forward from the neck to the front (with conditioner the comb should glide through), so it dangles down in front of you. Make sure there is a thin wall of hair (not a round ponytail), and then cut evenly across in a straight line. This works better the longer the hair is. You will get a slight layering effect.

andreailj: I would go to "professionals" if they weren't so scissor happy and end up cutting 5 inches when I just ask for a trim. I have cut my own for a while now and actually see the growth

Rohini R.: i actually cut my hair this way and it works for me. still keeps the length if i want it and gives volume and layers at the top

littleblondemop: I've seen stylists from even Super Cuts do fantastic work on hair. And I've gone to a stylist who made my hair look amazing. But my hair is so long now that I'd be intimidated to go for anything other than side bangs. They usually aren't trained to make super long hair look beautiful. Although I love the models hair in the video.

C. T: That's great! and so simple, thank you. I'm also so glad that you didn't cut her hair, it is beautiful! :-)

Leire Rabenberg: the girl in this video looks so done with everything

Miss Kim: So, try watching it with your head sideways (or screen lock your mobile phone and tilt it sideways). What he basically did in the first option was the equivalent of just standing and leaning over, with your hair pointed to the floor and brushing/combing it all down, and then doing what he said, brushing it together, pulling it to a point and cutting it in one cut...rather than making your arms ache by trying to brush your long, long hair up and over and forward in a sitting position.  The angle looks just the same to me, you just have to brush your hair all together, following the shape of your head like he did with hers. And the either point cut the ends, after your single cut he showed, to soften them further, or you could use thinning shears to just hit the end again, which basically does the same thing. So, one cut, followed by one cut with thinning shears, just taking off like an eighth of an inch...or a millimeter or two for you metric folks. He could’ve done that, but maybe it was because then it would’ve put the control in the hands of the model instead, and shown how easy it is? . All in all, I’m happy he showed it, and very thankful. That’s my kind of haircut, brush it all one way and cut it in one cut, no tiresome sectioning and all of that. I have little patience with it, and my hair is way too long. You know it’s too long when it sticks to your skin in the shower and pins your head in place! So, thank you ever so much to the uploader. My hair grows fast and this helps a lot!

Mary Collins: Thank you! This worked perfect for me!

klaritydawn: LOVE This!!! Thank you for the help! I agree nothing better than having it done BUT when you cannot find a GREAT or even mildly good hairdresser this Will help while on the hunt! Have had soooo many, many bad hairdressers it makes you afraid to trust anyone!

SpunkeeMonkee: I've been to professionals and I cut my own layers better than they did. I haven't had a good professional cut since I moved from Miami. It seems no one knows how to cut curly hair. No one seems trained for that. I have paid anything from $15 to $60 and none of them were as good as my own hair cut.

Dinorah T de León: Thank you that’s how I cut my hair and layer the front . I’m done with hair stylist they never style it the way you want they CHOP it and over do it to suit themselves . If I am screwing it up so be it at least I didn’t waste $120 on cut and style. I’d rather dye and style myself, moreover you tube has great videos on cutting hair and this one is helpful.

PomegranatesAndDroids: Maybe if he and his colleagues didn't yank and pull hair to the point where their clients are in visible discomfort and pain, people wouldn't be so adamant about doing their own hair.

Tatiana Morgan: Love how he explained this, It's better professionally done but sometimes that can't happen.

Kai: You can do this method on medium length hair too. If you want shorter layers then cut it with this method and then section off the top half of your hair, once again pull all your hair forward into a section in the front, and chop away! Doing this method in sections turns out a little better in my opinion. Also, using a pony as a guide works wonders.

zemma: this is a perfect example of WHY WE wanna cut our own hair!

S G: Best advice so far and very concisely presented, thanks so much. A few of the others said the same thing, but babbled on and on forever

Abby Labial: I like how he gives us all these tips and in the end remembers he is a professional and tells us not to do it ourselves so he won't lose his job.... I mean why give us a tutorial and then say never do it yourself and go to a professional??

Gothmummi: I started cutting my own hair after years of hairdressers telling me (not suggesting) that I " Need a good four inches off!" Even when I said cut off the smallest you can. So many arent bothered by what you want, I've had layers cut in when i have specifically said i do not want layers, I've had my hair cut short and said i dont mind as long as it isnt in THIS style, for them to then cut and style exactly how I said not to! Haven't had my hair cut or dyed in a salon for 10+ years but last time I was in a salon she asked me where I get my hair done. When I said I do it she said oh you're a hairdresser! When i said no, she then went on a long rant about people cutting/dying their own hair, mine looks great BUT I should really see a professional. I hear so many people say the same as me, it isnt just about money. It's also about scissor happy stylists who dont list to clients.

Beautifullife89: My guess the model looked pissed off is probably because for one, he ruin and combed down all her beautiful curls. And for two, did you not noticed how ruff that guy was combing her hair? I can tell he was pulling her hair really hard. That hurts!

klaritydawn: Thank you sooo very much! I agree, nothing is better than a professional but when you can't find one that doesn't destroy your hair you have to find ways to do it yourself. Sad but true. At least this will help until we can find someone who is actually good at what they are doing.

reborns4 smiles: Every time I have gone to a "PROFESSIONAL" they do exactly what I asked them NOT to do and they mess up my hair! I don't care if its a cut or color. Every single time no matter which one I go to. So I do my own and I am happy with the results.

Mimi Pacatang: I just did mine in 20 sec and its pretty good. Thank you i saved my money.

scharliess: Calm down! Don't brush these hair so hard! I'm not a hairdresser, but I understand that it's too much! She have beautiful hair, she is beautiful!

Amanda Lou: Bless this, I used the first trick to fix my hair after a stylist (wasn't my usual) put in the worst layers I have ever had

Lorelei Lets Live Together: I just now tried the first method and it worked out okay. Everything to the front and snip! Then I upward cut the raw ends just a tiny bit.

Accio Cake: I'm so afraid to cut my hair. I know I need too, it's been years. You know how you see a woman and you think to yourself "she's pretty but if she had better hair she would be much better looking." That's me right now and for the past year 100%.

Sachie Yam: I did it to my hair. worked great!

rainingdewdrops: I can't really afford a professional so I'll probably do the first method from now on, if it turns out well that is. Also, that model is stunning!! O_O

James Bacon: I just shave the back and the sides and dampen my hair so I can chop through it with scissors. Then again im a dude and the longest my hair gets is down to my shoulders. I basically chop it so it's reaaaallly feathery while also contouring the shape of my head (horizontally). Usually always turns out fine lol

fawn montelongo: I did this but in many layers from long to short and put a fringe twist then cut. Thank you. I love my hair.

Zenlutra: "Don't do it yourself." Right, thanks for the help.

Jenn Roberts: Warning: this method results in the back of your hair being up to 8 inches longer than the sides! (I’ve been cutting my own long hair for a few years now and this happened recently when I used this method). I would recommend watching girls who cut their own long hair. They tend to tie their hair before cutting so the sides are not so much shorter than the back.

Genalee Tejada: I have really long hair and watching this guy comb her hair hurt me

Missy Norris: She has really fine hair and you just can't move a comb or brush through fine hair like that. It really hurts. And it causes broken hairs mid-length, leading to flyaways & higher up the scalp, frizzies.

Alisha Bausone: Merci Monsieur! I just did this in Salon du la quarantine (AKA at my house) and it worked!

LindieLee: Typical hair dresser manhandling and aggressively pulling the hair. No thanks. I always brush my long hair from the bottom up not from the top down like he is doing. He cares about the cut not the condition of the hair.

Justcallmekayable: Unfortunately these tips don't work on super thick, curly , coarse african american hair. Very curly or afro hair  is cut best while wet because the texture of the curls is smoother when wet and the cut is more even. And any curly girl knows never to brush (unless your putting it in a ponytail) because it just makes the hair more frizzy. I hope my advice helps !

Rebecca Ramirez: And that hairdresser is so rude, he looks annoyed by even having to suggest how to cut your own hair. Thanks for the tip anyway lol I'm gonna go fund my hair scissors

Karicat Watts: Yeah. Good luck. I’ve been cutting my hair for so long it’s quite difficult to find someone I trust. Sometimes I just have to “not care” and be of the mind that it grows and the person is a professional. Though I almost always cut parts of it a few days later as things settle in. Hair can stretch when it is wet. Mine does. Sometimes I get so tired of my hair I’ll grab my hair shears and just chop the heavy part off. It’s very liberating plus I can use it as a starting point

Tru.Scorpio: The video we needed in 2020. This video aged very well

luvmytorties: Professionals take off way to much length if you are trying to grow your hair long. If you don't care about that, then you can get a great cut.

platinumblondie: Great advice! Thank you!

Flumencio Leon: I loved it and it was amazing

Artbug: I'm here because I'm paying WAY TOO MUCH to have salons consistently mess my hair up... I can mess my own hair up for free thank you very much!!

Yvethe1: NEVER trusting a "professional" again. Both times I want to a salon to get it cut they only did 2 layers. It looked like if I had a Bob and then a little bit of hair was long, it was so bad. Before that my parents would cut it and after that I always cut it myself. I do the "tip" or pulling all my hair forward and down to get a nice V shape with layers. My hair used to be super curly and I guess the dressers didn't know how to deal with curly and what would look nice on me,

DebbieWambui Cornthwaite: Very helpful, thank you!

Mitchie Galvan: the last person who cut my hair (July 2016) was my instructor and she did an amazing job. before it was myself (I did pretty good) and back in early 2012 I had my last haircut at a salon (only went to a salon because I got lazy). I haven't cut my hair since last July
