Wig Prep (Long Hair)

There's a quicker and easier way to prep a head with long hair for a lace-front wig. This is part of our 4 part web series on all things wigs — check out the whole wig series!

Hi, my name is Dan Vova, I'm here with Layne at makeup. First and today we're going to be putting lanes hair into a prep for a wig, so there's a quicker and easier way to put long hair into a prep. If we try to put her head into a full head of, pin curls, it actually would get really bulky. So here's a quicker way to do it, because Lane's hair grows forward. We'Re going to use our left hand on the right side start with the part and we'll pin the bangs in, and we're going to put one pin curl here on top remember, pin front to back and also pin with the flat side up. Remember don't cross the bobby pins unless you absolutely have to creates more bulk. We can take lanes bangs in to the pin, curl and they're up and out of the way now we're going to put a second pin crow right behind this at the root wrap pinch with your thumb, turn pivot and point nice and flat. Now we're going to take care of all this extra hair in the back, I'm going to divide the hair in the back at the occipital bone. So now that we've divided the hair up. What I like to do is split the hair and absolutely half cross the hair like this, and I'm going to use the hair, that's underneath to wrap into the pin curl and then we're going to simply take a pin and pin this into this pin curl. This will add a really flat area. Take the second side, wrap that around and look at how fast we're nearly done now we'll go back to our sides. Take the whole section and just create one pin curl remember a finger length of hair should be exposed. Now that we've completed these pin curls, we just have the nape left so remember, pin outside to inside and because her hair is long, you can use several pins to do this. Other side pinned it flat outside the inside use two pins for this. This is where the flesh-toned wig caps come into play, because this will blend with her hair color. The seam left to right stretch it out really good, open our hands, nice and big, make sure the front is flat, go just above the eyebrows make it over everything, including the ears, go above the seam slide it into place all those little hairs into place. There'S a review for pinning we should pin into which that's right into every single pin curl in the front and then to the back and we're going to pin wrong way, turn right way, wrong way, right way, wrong way right way outside to inside and then finally Take this: pin it down up or make a pocket. Now again, you can use this pocket slide the microphone in here and pin the wire up using the cap to pin over the wire tuck this in nice and tight and put a pin right here and now we have prepped lane in a long haired, quick pin, Curl set we've done three in the front we put a center crown with pin curl wrapped all, but the up typical hair and then the nape hair, otherwise known as the below occipital hair, has been put into two pin curls, and this is where we can pin. So remember: there's a finger of hairline exposed here should always be hairline exposed. This is Dave bova, I'm here with laying that makeup first and I hope you enjoyed our tutorial. Thank you.

Geneva Smallwood: It would be nice if you did one for someone with REALLY long hair like waste length and that was really super think. This was helpful for ideas but my hair is so big and long it still didn't work so smoothly. But it was the best video by far on here. Thank you (:

Elizabeth Berson: My hair is wayyy too long and thick to use this technique and it's very hard to do on your own, any suggestions?

TurquoiseBlue22: thank you so much! I have long hair that just about reaches my butt, and the first time I tired pin curls like this, it took me 10 mins. I wanted to thank you, I'm playing Velma in Hairspray the Musical and I have to wear a ridiculous teased heavy wig and because of this tutorial I don't have to worry about my Wig falling off, or hair coming out of it. THANK YOU!!!

Elexa Flores: This is great! I am always in musicals & right now I am doing hairspray so I have to wear a wig & this worked perfect for my long hair (: !

Lizard Queen: Thank you so much for this video. I've been watching so many 'wig tutorials' and most of them just involve throwing your hair into a ponytail and cramming it into the cap. This way will give me anchor points and be much flatter than what I've achieved before. Question though. How did you get the pin in the centre of the wig cap? I watched a few times but I can't see if the pin is actually going through the cap or not.

Kat Reagan: love this. it even works for me and i have very long thick hair. thanks!xx

LilGusher15: This was a life saver. I have dress rehearsals this week for a show and then we open on Friday. Thank you so much.

Hannah Marie: This is perfect for me. Thank you so much!

bbehn811: You were so stern and courteous. Loved it. ok will reference this video every time I need to put my hair up.

Marie-Anne Barcomb: This was very helpful! Thank you :)

jillybean190: i've watched alot of videos on how to put up a wig and this one is my favorite :D i think i'll definitly use it because i have such long hair and im going to be wearing a short wig. I'm gonna be 2-D from the Gorillaz :D thanks so much

Make Up First: Thanks for your input. Yes, the hair pin actually is going through the center of the wig cap.

leslie landberg: lovely presentation, cthankcyou. Now how about extra long technique? My hair is twice or three times as thick and four times as long as your model. Obviously, we'll need a different technique. How would you handle Lady Godiva for a short wig?

Dakiniwoman: Wow... can you imagine me pining my 26 inch long hair into pin curls?... all by myself... this is quite hilarious... but useful to see, so thanks for posting this interesting video... I am only 55 inches tall myself, so my hair is down to my hips... I am trying to grow it long... Long hair is when you can sit on it... right?... Also my own natural hair is pure platinum white... but I long to be a redhead so I want to wear wigs... There is actually some great information in this video... thanks so much!

Rita Mendes: Thank you so much, i'll try that out when my wig arrives :)

Taryn Things: Thank you so much! Can you recommend a video for people with *really* long and thick hair? Thanks! :)

Make Up First: So happy we helped you out!

Bailey: I would have never thought to do it like this!!

Kristie_Kat: THANK YOU my hair is really long and thick this will be perfect for it

Lars Palmer: thank you I have a male actor with a long ponytail whom we have to put a short old man wig on for our school's production of Harvey this just saved like 3/4ths of my sanity

joy escaner: i have 3 sets of wig with me, but i don't know how to place it. thanks this video is a great help to me as an educator. Ready now teach them the proper way in putting lace front wig. thanks

lerche noire: Man, I miss old YouTube. Straight to the point. Pure content. Nobody saying, "Be sure to hit like, comment, and subscribe. Tap the bell to get notifications. You can support me on Patreon."

AMP .Production: AHHH, pin curls will be the death of me...then again i'm doing my own hair and makeup for a musical thanks so much though it really helps.

TiaraTexas: Amazing video.

Jaylen Diller: when you have thick, long, layered, curly hair... this doesn't work to well. but it helped me understand better

espinogena: So helpful. I always just flattened it out but my wig caps and wigs slipped right off. What pins do you use to hold it in place? I know bobby pins but not those ones that held on the wigcap.

Ms Ch.: "Quick". I braid in 4 or 6 parts and pin to my head, it takes less than 15min and my arm doesnt hurt AND i can do alone. The tecnique takes too long and you might not be able to reach all the areas

Make Up First: @jillybean190 So happy that you found this video useful!

ngrave3: Perfect!

Make Up First: You can use products to "tame" the curls- and then just put the hair up the same way as demonstrated.

Dana Louise: that was a great tutorial

Make Up First: Excellent!

Valociraptorr: when something says long hair I expect longer than 30cm. My hair is more than double this length, so this doesn't help at all!

Kazious _: I have twice the length, and tons more thickness and wave to my hair... I think it’s safe to say I’ll never be able to use wigs nothing helps

Make Up First: You would prep the hair the same way, perhaps putting less hair in the pin curls and adding more braids with less hair, so the hair lays flatter against the head

Make Up First: You are so welcome!!

Eve Villatoro: This is great! But does it work on people with layers and alot of hair?

Make Up First: you are more than welcome!!

Autumn Norman: Love the tutorial! It is OccipiTal bone though, not occipiCal.

Make Up First: Yes-this will work!

rah brt: what sort of pins are you using to pin the wig cap they don't look like bobby pins

Aro: what if you have extremely curly and longer hair than this?

thx1085: @makeupfirstschool Awesome, thanks for the quick response!

Violet Dust: This is better than having two giant braids making your head look like an alien (unless that is what you are going for)

Raymond Torres: Aweee Dave Bova..... rest in peace!

Nicole Manko Levite: This should save some me some time, thank you.

Jessica Smith: This might be okay if you have next to no hair on your head.

Make Up First: @TurquoiseBlue22 You are so welcome-and you'll be great in your upcoming musical!

Fa Albederi:

Make Up First: If the wig prep and wig cap are not working, and you are correctly prepping your hair for the wig, the only thing I can suggest is a bald cap and/or a larger wig!

Rita Mendes: What if your hair is WAAAAYYYYYY much longer than this? :L Mine's about 2/3 longer and very thick....

Jenaiya Irving: you saved my life

Sophie Lloyd: Brilliant

Make Up First: Are you able to find a wig cap that is close to the color of the wig?

thx1085: And it works with hair even longer than that, right?

Alco Rebel Cent: This would never work on me, my hair is way longer than hers and extremely thick

pangpond88: thx so much^^

Turtlezcatz: all the women who came looking for help but then long hair suddenly becomes shoulder length

Deysy Carrillo: ohh I really liked rhis video :)

Mollie Mk: wish u had a model with actual LONG hair.

Shannonigans: Seriously, why do none of these videos end up with the logical wig being placed??

Make Up First: @thx1085 Yes-it does!

Laura Bikman: Fabulous

Make Up First: @Kittykattarina Excellent!!

Sara Rønning: i have THICK long hair. what do i do?

Delaney Rose: is that a pregnancy test on the wall logo??

XskelxXscareX: Her hair isn't even that long.. .-. Can you please try a girl with her hair down to her butt/lower back? Thanks!

Make Up First: @DannaLuvar Yay!!

Blessed-N-proud9 Mama: I've seen quicker ways

aprilmoran26: that hair was not long at all not even close show real long and thick hair calling that models hair is just rediculous

Liwiathan: My hair doesn't stay.

Penny Flores: Quick? Lmao

Spiider Yee: I've heard bobby pins tend to ruin the wig, but I may be wrong.
