CHURCH AND LONG HAIR

Dear Pastor Bob: I live in Illinois and I'm a metal head. The churches here judge me because of my long hair. I enjoy going to church but the ones I've been to have been pushing me away.

Today’s Scripture Reading:

Galatians 5:22-23

So this is a subject that i've talked about probably a thousand times 1001 coming up next on: pastor, bob's, coffee break revolution, 20, 21, revolution of love, that's our poster, our mug and our t-shirt for the year and uh. We'Re excited for that to continue. I haven't talked about it for a little while, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important. We have a revolution this year. I know it. I can feel it. I know that there is revival in the air revolution revival of his love, agape, and so that's what that's all about just want to remind you, and by the way, we've kept these very low in cost. If you go to our store, we are metalwarefamily.com. You'Ll see that they are almost half price of everything else, the t-shirt and uh and the mug. Just because i want you to remember that this is the year of revolution. Anyway, there we go so here's the question for today i live in illinois and i'm a medal head. The church is here judge me because of my long hair i enjoy going to church, but the ones i've been to have been pushing me away. So i mentioned at the very beginning of this podcast that this is a a question and this statement is one that i've heard for 50 years. It'S still there it's an old argument and uh. I guess some churches are are so conservative that they're almost 50 years behind you think i don't know - i don't know and a whole lot of the people that are sitting there in that church, that are, the older people had long hair at one point too yeah A lot of them did you know we forget those things and styles change and and people change, and we continue to judge each other for things that well, we did ourselves. I had an interesting discussion with a friend who, whose husband had very very long hair when they got married, and we were talking about her son who wants to have long hair and she said i'd. Never let him have long hair. I said really. Why not? She goes, i just don't think it looks very good and it doesn't you know it. It just doesn't, doesn't look camped, it doesn't look well, it doesn't match with what she thought. People in society ought to look like, although she married my my other friend when he had really long hair. Why did we get to that place? I don't know many people in the church had long hair at one time many people dealt with it and these days it's almost a non-issue that the younger generation doesn't necessarily have lung hair. It'S a short-haired world today. So it's really a non-issue, but you know i think that sometimes when we have trouble getting along with people, we like to blame the things that seem obvious to us. People don't like me because of my long hair, and sometimes it's well people don't like me because of something else. You know the way people treat. You is listen to me. It'S not totally up to them a lot of it's up to you. I have never let my appearance hinder my relationships. I'Ve had so many times when people i could tell didn't like my tattoos or didn't like my piercings or didn't like my long hair or whatever it was, but then i realized that it's up to me to win them over because then i need to shine. Then i need to show them who i am then i need to allow the holy spirit to work through me, because we will always judge people according to something until that person breaks through until we see who they are until we have intimacy with them into me. See and to be saved, see me see who i am well. The scripture i'd like to go to today is galatians chapter 5, verses, 22 and 23.. You say: pastor bob, that's the fruit of the holy spirit. What does that have to do with it? Well, let's read it but the fruit of the holy spirit, the work which his presence within accomplishes is love, joy, gladness, peace, patience and inner temper forbearance, kindness goodness, in other words, benevolence faithfulness, gentleness, meekness, humility, self-control, self-restraint and against such things. There is no law that can bring a charge, in other words, when those things begin to come from you, people can't bring a charge against them because it takes the the fight or the argument completely out and when you're, in a situation where you feel like people Are judging you no matter what it is, whether it's hair or you know, there's a million things, but all of those things disappear. When people get to know you, i've been invited to speak in churches in the past that, when people that listen to my well in those days, cassette tapes of sermons and that we'd really like to have this guy join. Or you know i i narrated the bible and uh it's on amazon and people like my voice and let's have this guy speak and then, when they see what i look like it's like, i don't know, i don't know if we should let him in the pulpit And i realized that it's up to me to win them over and i usually do because first thing we see is appearance, but the second thing that we need to see that shines even more is who we are our countenance. The holy spirit inside working from the inside out and all of those things that really do win people over and b make people warm up to us and against these things there is no law that can bring a charge. You kind of take the the wind out of their sails. You take the argument out of the equation and that's the way it works. So if you're in a situation and i'll answer this question, if you're in a situation where you you feel like people are judging you because of your hair, take it to the next level. Let them get to know you it's up to you to show who you are and if you're a long-haired guy, that's rebellious. That feels offended and all of those things then you'll show them and give them a lot of reasons not to like you. But if you can step it up, if you can rise above all of that, if you can be who you are and let your inside shine, the hair will disappear. I guarantee it. The hair will disappear, the piercings, the whatever will disappear and the majority of people will see who you are and love you well folks, don't forget, you are blessed, so go and be a blessing. You

Metal Girl: Helpful words at the right time! I have to visit my mom at the weekend and she hates my hair and piercings and so on...so I'll show her the fruits of the Holy Spirit! Thank you PBB!

Craig Halvorson: Pastor Bob was born with long hair and we love Pastor Bob!

Sarah Jnkmamma Smith: Great teaching Pastor Bob. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. God bless you and keep you safe in Jesus' name

AVJR: I want you to speak in my church, PBB!

CHRISvsEVIL: I agree with you pastor Bob, we have to move our relationship with others past the length of our hair, we are brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.

Shirley Giordano: Pastor, I am looking forward to hearing this. Out of the conversation, I just prayed for someone. My mom is in the grocery store, I'm in her car. A man just pulled up to the liquor store, and was throwing stuff, kicking his car, and calling people using the F word to them, because he needs liquor money. Poor guy. He needs Jesus. I prayed for his lost soul.

Will Barnz: While there are some who will absolutely refuse to give you a chance (past reputation, your appearance, etc), You do need to make yourself available to be known anyway. Give them the opportunity to get to know the real you. If they refuse, its on them them and they'll have to explain it to God one day. Don't let their problem become yours.

Edward Petitt: Thank you Pastor Bob you couldn't have said it better. They forget God doesn't judge you by your hair he judges you by what you do.

Impala Man: Whenever this subject comes up, I always wonder how many barber shops there were in Biblical times? Were scissors even invented yet? A Hebrew man wandering through the desert, or Paul on a missionary journey to Europe probably isn't thinking about finding the next barber to cut their hair so they can honour God

Shirley Giordano: PB, I love the Galatians verse. I wish people would follow it.

Stephan Wilson: AMEN Brother!!!

Sue Bryant: Since God accepts each of us just as we are, why can't we do the same? He blesses all of us just the same and offers us each the same home in eternity. If He doesn't mind, why should we?

Shirley Giordano: I agree, Pastor. It's the inside, not the outside. I agree that I need to show people that I'm a good person, just poor. Thanks. BTW, I'm not just poor. I'm greatful.

Sumai: Don't judge a book by the cover. GOD & JESUS are my judges. And the only judges that matter.

Dan Sweet: People talk about my long hair because I am a rocker and when the Christian community gets on me about it I say " hey Jesus put long hair in style I believe" Jesus loves everyone whether they are bald, have long or short hair.

Shirley Giordano: Churches can be difficult. Not just with hair length. I got told that I was not dressed up enough for church. I am poor. I can only afford what I can afford. It seems that every church I enter, I get some crap. Because I can't afford dresses.

jon lockett: Lovely message all through.People must stop judging by appearances. It is Long overdue.God never changes. If Long hair on men was an offence to Him He'd never have commanded Nazerites to grow their hair for the whole of their consecration to Him.Numbers 6,Judges 13,Amos 2 verse 11.Not just Samson either.Nazerite(S) plural.I know many will come back with "what about 1 Corinthians 11?".It was a eastern cultural Thing for that place and time.Any Christian wanting men to never have Long hair yet ignoring the first part that women Need to wear veils in church and never have short hair is simply being a hypocrite. We have to start there with women and veils if we're to want to enforce that passage's message. How many of those churches in Illinois enforce that women never have short hair and must be properly veiled in the Islam like Eastern sense?None would be my guess.

T B: Hope you're okay. Saw where Nashville got hit hard with heavy rainfall and flooding.

Cowtownbaldie: It's just as bad as when you shave your head. People think all types of negative things because they don't like shaved heads tattoos or my pierced ears. If people would just bother to get to know me, they would see that how we wear our hair (or lack of) really has nothing to do with who we really are. I treat all people with respect and kindness and hope that is what they see.

wayne anderson: I think there was a time when hair styles associated us with beliefs such as years ago my parents generation used the word ‘hippie’ for men with long hair(which has nothing to do with the drug/ hippie 1960’s lifestyle) ....Mohawks used to be a punk thing but I’ve seen country artists with Mohawks & so lines have been blurred for so long it’s only a human preference these days. Every time I see a guy on a motorcycle now I wonder if they sit at a desk at work as an insurance salesman etc....not exactly the tough guy image it once was. Ultimately you can’t rely on outward images to make a person righteous before God. If that was the case then Jesus did not need to die for our sins if all we needed was the right haircut. Also I make a distinction between the words traditional & conservative. Traditional is doing things the same way because it makes us feel good but no beneficial reason. Conservative is values based & is focused inward on character & things that last regardless of culture norms. You can have long hair & tattoos(like me)but your values are conservative as In believing in marriage & things God created as a foundation for society. God bless Pastor Bob!

Nils Whitewater Weber: John Wesley himself had long hair all his life :)

beartechdeck: Why would people even think of long hair as an issue when Jesus is always depicted as having long hair?

Roland 777: Dear Pastor Bob, I sent an e-mail to Sanctuary International an to you about 4 weeks ago, but unfortunately did´n get any answer. I´m afraid, it´s signed as a spam... Maybe you can find it there... I´m Roland from Germany...

Billy McCall: I don't entirely disagree, we are responsible to be good people and show them that their judgments are wrong. But I dunno, I still think these judgmental people need to be held accountable for their prejudice. I'm sure you've had people who, NO MATTER WHAT, refuse to even hear you or associate with you at all because of the way you look. I think that is an issue these people need to take care of as well. So I'll just say, I'll do my part, but it's also up to them to do theirs as well, otherwise a relationship of some kind will never work. I hope the Spirit moves through them to look beyond appearance, as it does through me to prove that my appearance doesn't mean anything bad! :)

Shirley Giordano: You speak at churches? Come to the Immaculate Conception!

CA Merica: Jesus had long hair. Would they judge Jesus?

Austin David: So when Christians get on your case about having long hair, this is the verse they are referencing: 1 Corinthians 11:14, NLT: "Isn't it obvious that it's disgraceful for a man to have long hair?" Would you like to explain this verse Bob? How does this verse fit in with your Galatians reading?

Jesus My Lord & Savior King: we should be looking at the bible and see what God has to say about men with long hair. This what he had to say about it. 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 14Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. Ezekiel 44:20 20"'They must not shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.

CAisCool: But, they are not good christians if they judge others on their appearance. Jesus had long hair. Would they judge Jesus?
