PLEASE NOTE

I AM NOT A HAIRSTYLIST! YOU MAY NOT AGREE WITH ME AND THAT IS OKAY. THIS IS MY HEAD AND MY LIFE!

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL IN THE COMMENTS. I UNDERSTAND THAT SOME OF YOU WILL SEND ME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS, WHICH I DO APPRECIATE, BUT KNOW I HAVE TRIED IT ALL!! I’M JUST HERE TO SHARE MY STORY.

Today’s video is probably one of the most open and transparent videos I have ever made. I wanted to speak to you all about my battle with traction alopecia, which means I don’t have edges.

Recently, I went viral on TikTok and I wanted to provide you guys with the backstory and an in depth tutorial of how I would do a swoop ponytail. This ponytail lasts about 3 days. You can touch it up, but make sure you wrap it at night and get a good oil sheen to avoid flaking! Also, to remove the edges, just wash it out (don't pull).

I am not the originator of this hack, I just added my own spin to videos I have already seen. Please check out the women below, because they inspired me to try this edges hack on myself:

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel it's vanessa here and today's video is super duper near and dear to my heart. If you guys have been following me, you know that i just went viral on tick. Tock. I'Ve gotten over four million views on a video that i was so apprehensive to post. I was so scared to post it, but i opened up about my battle with traction alopecia, which is a condition that has caused me to permanently lose my edges. Basically, i will leave a time step if you just want to go ahead and get to the tutorial, but i did kind of want to just give you guys a little back story about my edges. Just growing up, i've really never had edges, i'm very, very sensitive about even still to this day as a 30 year old woman. It'S something that i'm super duper insecure about, and it has really impacted me in my life. My social life and romantic relationship has even impacted my career. I don't really remember having edges i feel like ever since i was in elementary school. I really haven't had them and i actually didn't even know that that not having edges was a thing until a student in my third grade class told me that i didn't have edges, so i went home told my mom and she was just like yeah. You know your hair is just very thin right there, but you're, still beautiful and so me and my mom have always tried to find ways to camouflage my edges, whether it be wearing bangs middle parts. Swoops things like that to kind of just conceal the fact that i didn't have edges in middle school, in high school and even in college. I was constantly reminded that i didn't have edges. What did i do to damage my edges or why don't? I have them, and i always didn't really have an answer because i'd never really had them, so i've just learned to not only embrace it but to camouflage it on my own and just do things to help me feel better about myself. If that makes sense, one day last week, i was just feeling inspired to just go ahead and record my process. I saw a girl on youtube, i'll leave her information below and on tick tock, where she was able to use a technique to go ahead and create baby hairs and or edges. So i wanted to go ahead and try it and record the process, and in doing that i put up my camera in my bathroom and i just started to do this. Ponytail and i haven't been able to wear my hair confidently in a back ponytail ever in life. I'Ve never been able to do that and it was a liberating experience to be able to create something just to see myself with a bad ponytail and not feel insecure. About how it looks was so liberating to me and i went ahead and i just posted it to my tick tock and i went to sleep when i woke up the next morning. I had a million views on the video in the comments was filled with so much negativity, so much negativity from. Why are you doing this to yourself? What happened to your edges? I instantly turned the comments off on the video, but so many other people started to post the video on baller alert on a lot of hair pages and the internet just took it by storm and at first i was very discouraged. I almost deleted my videos from my platforms, but no, i was stopped by so many people who, who were just so supportive and encouraging, and i received over a thousand messages across my platforms from women telling me that they appreciated my transparency and my openness to share This struggle that so many women have and alopecia and not having edges is not something that people actually choose to have it's actually a condition that can be caused by so many different things from pregnancy and postpartum to medications pcos. So many other challenges that women can face, that can cause them to naturally lose their hair, and i just wanted to be that person to just to be able to share my story and to let them know that it's okay, that, despite what people say about you, Your edges, how you appear you still are beautiful. I remember so many times when i have been teased and taunted about my edges up until this day and believe it or not. A lot of the comments that i did receive negatively were from men, which i find very interesting, because i don't understand why women black women more specifically, are the most degraded the most disrespected, but the most sought after it's the craziest thing to me, and we live In a world now where people are so encouraged to get their bodies done and seek perfection that it's often challenging to see a woman actually embrace her flaws, one thing that not having edges has taught me is to work with what i have and being resourceful. I'M able to improvise on the spot i'm able to be creative and be innovative, because we can we, as women are the most innovative people on the planet. I'Ve created this video to show you guys that, even with the insecurity of not having edges, you can still feel confident. You can still feel beautiful. All you have to do is improvise and make it work for you now. A lot of people might not agree with my methods. A lot of people might say i'm further damaging my hair, i'm doing the wrong thing, but honestly, i'm doing what i feel is right for myself and i want to share that journey with so many women who are just like me willing to wear different styles. Like i haven't been able to wear my hair in this type of style ever, but because i was able to create something that i feel is confident makes me feel sexy. I feel so beautiful and so empowered that i just had to share. So this video is a step by step on how i do this hairstyle right here with no edges. It cost me about ten dollars to do and if i wasn't filming it, it wouldn't take me that long at all so yeah i'm really excited the way. It came out, and i cannot wait to share with you guys again for all of the likes the shares the comments, everything on all of my social media platforms and dealing with my edges. I so appreciate you for jumping on with me and being supportive in me, because it is like one of my biggest insecurities. Okay, like i'm getting real with you guys, because i really wanted to share something near and dear to my heart and um. I know i'm not the only girl out there who suffers from this. You see lebron works on his hair every season and people still talk about him and he's still the greatest player out there. If that makes sense. So with that being said, i just wanted to make women feel beautiful, feel included and help them to understand they can wear their hair back, they can embrace who they are and still feel beautiful. All you got ta do is work what you got so yeah, if you're interested in seeing how i go from edgeless to edges, go ahead and thumbs up this video make sure that you subscribe to join the vanessa monet family, because over here we are all about The glam life we are all about making everything beautiful. So if that's you go ahead and click that subscribe button down below and join the family, i would love to have you and let's go ahead and jump into this video. I went ahead and i added a few pieces right here in the front, because i want my swoop to be thicker than what it is. I just went ahead and straightened out my hair. I feel like whenever you're doing a ponytail in your hair. You have to have straight hair, it's easier to put in a ponytail and it's not as wavy i'm going to separate this hair right here from the ponytail and do the ponytail first, because we're going to go ahead and add this at the end. What i like to use on my ponytails is this baby right here. This is the lusters slick, stick and i'll go ahead, and just put this on my hair. This really is: what is the magic of the hair style? You can get these at your local beauty supply and on amazon, and what this does is it just really slicks the hair down, so i'm going to just go ahead and put it in a ponytail. Now i'm going to do is take some got to be spray and just spray, the ponytail down. So now i'm just taking some eco styler gel and i'm going to just slick down the edges that i do have. I kind of want to leave this part out because i kind of want it to be down. You want to make sure you get behind the ear as well, so now that i have gelled it all down and i'm gon na wait for this to dry. I'M gon na work on my swoop area spray a little bit more and on the top. So this is how it looks so far see that i'm still ball headed but we're gon na work it out. I'M gon na wait for that dries. I'M gon na go ahead and work on this side and this side takes a lot of patience. So i've added a few pieces like i've, told you guys already, and so i'm going to go ahead and lay this down. So what i'm going to do is just start to form a swoop not going to use any gel. Now, i'm going to start using my got to be spray to really solidify it down, and i didn't use any gel. All i used was got to be because i still want it to look soft, even though it's not in order to hold it down. I have to put a rubber band on the ponytail so that it remains secure. I'M gon na go ahead and close. It up see that and then from here you can just like take the spray and kind of correct wherever you need to i'm going to also add a little bit of gel right here. I just pretty much push it back into the swoop. It'S really nice to have a comb like this, because it makes it easier to do it any flyaways. You see just kind of push them down with your comb. This is almost dry, so we can kind of start working on that part. But this is how it looks now, of course, i haven't added the pony or anything, but you really just got to make sure your swoop is down and nice, and i think i put about one two three tracks right there. In order for them to reach. You know the pony in the back, you guys know, i have short hair, let's go ahead and get the edges together. What i use for that is this got to be glued spiking gel. What i have here is two left over track pieces that i used in order to complete my swoop and i'm going to actually take this hair and add it to this part of my head, so that i can still feel confident when i'm going out right. Take my scissors and i'm going to cut it off the weft like this. I can now use it as my edges. Before i add the hair on my head, i like to take the got to be glued and i like to go ahead and put it on this part of my hair and just kind of slick it in the areas where i want to place the hair and You can do this in sections, i'm going to literally start it right there at the top. So i'm going to put this on the hair and don't worry if it looks a little white, that's okay! What we end up doing later is applying some oil sheen and it kind of goes right away. I go ahead in with my hair pieces and i like to take sections of the hair right and i like to use the bottom of the hair. I just feel like um, it's not as blunt, and sometimes you have to cut it to make it look decent and you just want to place it where you need it. So i need it right there and i just keep going with this process so keep watching. One thing i like about this technique is: you can actually layer hair on top of each other until you get your desired look, the gel will dry, so just go ahead and add some more until you're comfortable with the result, and this is human hair. By the way, i find that, for my hair, texture using human hair is best, but if you are more of a natural hair person, i would go with synthetic hair. I have like a few more pieces to add and if you see hairs, kind of standing up just take your comb and press down into the gel. I'M going to take the rest of this hair and place it into the ponytail so that it looks and be careful because you don't want to pull any of the hair, i'm just spraying it down, so it doesn't move. And then i just take another rubber band and gently put it around. You got to really treat the hair like a project. Okay, i left this out and it's really important to have some type of comb like this, so that you can just you know, go over this and make sure it's nice and in place. You might even have to like put a little bit of got to be on it as well the gel, because the gel is what really makes it stay put, not the spray. The spray really is just there to mold everything, but if you really want the edges to stay, you want to put got to be on it and remember it will dry clear. So don't worry about that part and then i'll just take like some of my gel right here and use this on my actual edge right and i'll just kind of make a swirl or something cute. Oh hey, where you going i'm just doing a video okay, say hi to my channel hi channel, and then i went to the beauty supply and i picked up this by model model. This is the pony pro quick, wrap, weave ponytail. It comes with a two braids and you guys know i love to wrap the hair with something. So you open it up, and it looks like this. All you do is literally wrap your ponytail around this. I'M just clamping this baby on. This is a synthetic ponytail. By the way. Now i'm left with these little two pieces here and it's pretty long. I'M gon na wrap the two braids with it. I'M gon na add a few bobby pins, i'm very impressed with it. It actually matches my texture, really pretty here's what the back looks like. So all right, you guys, let me spray a little bit of this hair polisher on it. This just makes it shine and you can actually spray this on your edgeless. If you need it to kind of like get any white flakiness away, and so that's what i did there, this is one of my favorite hair polishers. By the way, this is the icy hot hair polisher. It'S really great. If you want a oil sheen that does not weigh your hair down, but still leaves it very silky and very shiny love this stuff so much i just went ahead and put on a little bit of makeup. Yeah, i'm just putting a little bit of makeup. So i can kind of close out the video and to show you guys the finished look. So let me turn around. Instead of doing this, you can also do a braided ponytail, which i've done on my channel already it's like a short little clip of it. Let me know if you guys would like to see that as well, because i can go into detail more so about that. But if you go to my tick, tock you'll see like an in-depth tutorial of how i do a ponytail and braid situation. And i love this, i feel so confident in myself and i just feel like i can go outside and not be afraid of anybody. Looking at my scalp, because it's there, i did that honey. I'M gon na put on some earrings just to kind of bring it out, and this pretty much finishes out the look. I'M loving how my hair came out. It'S given very much so vibes, i'm feeling really cute, really confident. I'M feeling like i can turn heads. Take pictures, and not have to worry about my edges, face tune photoshop. All of those things i could just be myself. I haven't been able to wear this type of hairstyle ever in life, so i was really excited to do it and i'm so grateful that you guys came by and you watched it and again. Thank you for all of the love across all my social media platforms. I cannot believe that one of my videos was seen by over 4 million people. That means 4 million people put their eyes on me for once you know, and it is for something great something that's near and dear to my heart and something that i really wanted to share with you guys when it's time to take pictures - and i turn on All these lights - and i get myself ready part of my getting ready process - is concealing my edges and i there's so much work that goes into it. Whenever i'm doing videos, i always have to make sure my edges are covered so that i don't get the comments. So i don't get the worries. You know. I'Ve even had my friends gift me it products for my edges, thinking that they would help me, but it kind of hurt my feelings, but i kind of let them slide because i know everybody just wants to help me and even now, like my dms, are filled With people shaming me or trying to offer me products which i i appreciated either way because hey that's the name of the game, you put yourself out there you're going to get feedback, i've been unsuccessful in growing them back, so i've just found a way to kind Of conceal them, i will leave all the products that i have used in today's video down below, if you want to check them out, including this hair and everything else again. Thank you. So much for watching and i'll see you guys in my next video you
