How To Cut Your Own Hair & Not Screw It Up!

How To Cut Your Own Hair & Not Screw It Up is a video where I show demo the most simple methods for cutting your own hair with minimal risk of cutting too much. DISCLAIMER: These techniques are for trimming. You should always see a professional stylist for the best results. No at home haircut can replace a trained professional. That being said, this haircut tutorial shows what I call the Gravity Cut and two versions of The Pony Cut. Cutting your own hair is not something I normally advise, but during this quarantine I know we are all dying for a trim so I hope you guys enjoy!

For the cheapest thinning shears available check out the links below. I also drop my recommendation for entry level professional shears if you dead serious about cutting hair.

And what I'd? Okay? Hey guys, welcome back yeah shut up, hey guys! Welcome back to the channel, and today I'm gon na be sharing with you, two haircuts that you can do on long hair at home by yourself with just a couple of a really inexpensive tools. So, let's get started all right. First, you're gon na want a really good detangling brush. This is gon na help. You set your cut up. Second you're gon na want some thinning shears. You can get these on Amazon for between five dollars and eighty-eight cents and about thirty bucks in the low end range. So why thinning shears? Not why not a regular pair of scissors? Well, the thinning shears are far more forgiving than regular scissors with regular scissors. You'Ve got the risk of harsh lines if you make a mistake and we really want to just trim with the least risk of failure here, so the thinning shears are far more forgiving and they give you such a softer. Look. So that's why we're using thinning shears in today, all right? The first cut I'm going to show you. I called the gravity cut and it starts with a center part. That goes all the way back to the nape call it. The gravity cut because you're just gon na let the hair fall and cut it in its natural state, and this is really for trimming. Then we're gon na spray it with a little bit of shine spray. So we can get our brush through and get it nice and detangled. Then we're going to take our thinning shears. We'Re gon na put our ring finger through the upper tang and our thumb through the lower finger hole and we're gon na want to hold our scissors. Just like this now we're not gon na want to grab the shear like this, like with a claw grip, because it applies very uneven tension and gives it a very uneven cut. Also gives you less control, as you're moving the scissor around a lot. You'Ll want to just move your thumb. You'Ll want to go ahead and lean your head down and brush your hair downward into a clean perimeter line. Then you want to take your thinning, shears and just gently start trimming the hair that you feel looks damaged, but in a straight line. I know it really would have been helpful if the camera was angled down like six inches lower. You can see what she's doing, but what she's doing is just opening and closing the scissors over and over again, because they're spinning shears and they it barely takes off any hair and you're really just dusting in slowly. You want to come out. Look in the mirror. Put your hair back to its natural resting state and see if everything's, looking good, there's no chunks missing. You didn't cut too much and you'll want to do this pretty often every ten seconds, or so you want to come back cup brush the hair down and look at it again to make sure that you don't get micro focused on one piece and then wind up Cutting too much off so after you've finished that one side you'll be the same thing on the other side, we'll brush it down, create a really nice clean perimeter. So you can see the bottom of your hair, don't touch the hair and just begin to give it a little bit of trim. Now you can see a little bit closer there that she's just cutting a little bits off as she goes through now the thinning shears. You have to open and close quite a bit more like I said so. This takes a little more time, but it's still really quick and very low-risk. You cut too deep one or two times it doesn't make that much of a difference all right, so Maddie just committed one of the big sins in cutting your own hair. She got micro focused on one spot, kept cutting, didn't, look up and wound up cutting a little too deep, but even then, even with cutting too deep, you can barely see it a difference or a mistake. Had those been real scissors, her hair be three inches too short on one side looks pretty good, so she's now cut the entire perimeter of her hair she's, given her dead ends, a really good trim, without changing the shape of her haircut. So next, I'm gon na show you how to cut layers into the hair. All right, hair cut. Number two is called the pony cut. You'Re gon na need your thinning, shears and two hair ties we're gon na start by putting a pony tail right above the ears. They'Re going to slide the hair tile all the way up to the top of the hair, leaving just a little bit out, then we're gon na remove the perimeter of the hair that we just trimmed so that we don't ruin the framework of the haircut. We still want those face-framing layers and the entire perimeter to stay the same. We don't want to lose any length. This is really just to trim up layering then we're gon na do is take our ponytail down to the side of our head. So we can see what we're doing not let our arms get tired. We'Re gon na hold our shears right in front of us we're gon na cut on an angle, alright, so the way we want to do this is push the thinning shears in and pull them out at an angle so that we can see what we've done. Every single time we take a snip and we want soft ends here, we're not looking for a really harsh line. We really want to keep things soft for thicker, hair textures. You can actually point cut with your thinning shears as you press down and fan out the hair. This is gon na. Give you even a softer, more blended, look on the ends. Alright, let's take it down and have a look. Well, there you go perfectly trimmed layers with no lines. No disconnections looks great, alright. Now, there's one more way to do this occasionally haircuts have very short layers in the front and long layers in the back, and we don't want to lose any link when this happens. We'Ll just want to modify this haircut into two ponytails one in the front and one to take care of the back start by creating a part over each ear. Separating the front of the hair from the back. We'Re then going to create a ponytail right at the front. Hairline then we're going to slide our hair tie all the way to the top. Just like we did in the first version of this haircut and leave yourself some room. You can always cut more hair, we're gon na get rid of the undercoat and remove the perimeter. So we don't mess up our hair line or our face framing layers. We'Re then gon na take the hair around just soap it in the first version. We'Re gon na cut this on an angle now create a ponytail on the back and this time we're gon na slide that ponytail hair tie forward not just straight up what this does is. It leaves the hair longest in the back and helps blend with the front. So we're gon na take that piece right there same thing: we're gon na be cutting on an angle and there you go method, number two for trimming your layers and you can see, there's just no hard lines. Everything'S blending really softly, really a really beautiful texture. Still, no chunks missing, like I said, with those thinning shears, it's just much harder to make mistakes when you're cutting hair and that's why we got such a nice soft result thanks for watching guys, I hope you enjoyed. Jessica J.: Great video & great advice! Me and my sisters have tried the ponytail-layer diy haircut many times when we were teens & in our early 20’s The layers always came out really far apart from each other, and the longest layer underneath was always super long It still wasn’t too bad looking so we kept doing it for years.

Sophie Chambers: Thank you for the tips. I followed all of them and my first DIY haircut looks great! I feel relieved and looking forward to showing off my new do.

Chica and Sunsets: Great video for showing just long layers (I already have shorter layers in front, but wanted to do more long layers on the ends and back) - thank you so much!

Czarina Pasia: I tried this cut just now. I styled my wavy hair and waiting for it to dry. From what I can see right after the cut, it looked promising. Can’t wait to see the results!

Linda White: Great video, I tried it and it works :) Thanks! One question - how many inches would be safe to cut off during all the different steps that you took to layer? From 1 to 2 " every step?

Kelly Hauth: Love this! Would love to see a model go from long to medium length with layers.

Claudia: Very helpful video. I didn’t have a problem with the camera angle because the audio description is detailed. I’ve cut my hair 3x with this method. First time I tried it my hair was as long as the model in the video. After 3rd time my hair is 3 inches below my collar bone and I like this length best. This method works great!!! After I make the center part front to back and trim one side, I leave that side down and to the front while I trim the other side. I do this in front of a mirror so I can see that both sides are straight and even. After the front/back ponytail, I add one more ponytail for final layering with the hair just on top/crown of my head, like the area that would be shaved as a bald circle on a medieval monk (sorry—best way I have to describe it) and cut that the same way as the front/back ponytail. I also brush my hair straight and down the front with a center part so I can cut face framing layers by just trimming up at an angle to my chin. I don’t have fancy scissors, so I use my big office scissors and gently snip into each ponytail end so it’s not blunt or harsh. I get a lot of compliments and am often asked who does my hair. Sorry, but I might never go back to the salon.

Rocio Dominguez: Loved it finally something easy to follow... Keep up the good work

Beauty of Eden: THANK YOU for this video!!! ❤️ it looks better than when I get it professionally done.

Nikki Burroughs: Super helpful! Even with the camera angled the way it was. I still got it. Thanks so much!

mtianshi: Thanks for the video :) For me took a while sectioning my hair for the pony cut, but with your guiding i did not screw up my hair :) Thanks a lot <3

B3337: Hi! Soooo regardless of this entire pandemic, I HATE going to the hair dressers. I have enough social anxiety as is, and the hair dresser is a nightmare for me. I really like the concept of this Ponytail method you show here where the hair is sectioned twice. My layers need a trim REALLLYYY bad. I want to grow them out, but I can't deal with the fried ends anymore. I don't want to use thinning shears, as I feel they damage my hair more than help. I have regular hair cutting scissors, brand new. Is it ok to point cut into the ends with regular hair scissors instead? Please make another video elaborating on this particular method (the two sections for the layering). When you say "cut on an angle" do you mean cut the hair in the ponytail so that it goes into a diagonal point, like a 45 degree angle, or was the phrase used to just mean dont straight cut across? Can I cut each section straight across first and then point cut into it? I think if you did a video on this it could be very helpful and popular! Maybe see if someone you know isn't too shabby with the camera! Thanks! And geez some of these comments are rude. Ew

Erika Barnette: I liked the video - found it very useful. The links for your sheer recommendations are not working though - what would you recommend for someone cutting their hair at home - medium/long (past shoulders), fine (but a lot of it) and wavy. Thank you in advance!

Wonderful Lola: Thank you ... You made it easier and clear ⁦⁩⁦⁩

Krista B: Super informative; thankyou. Sure we can't see the trimming in the first bit, but the most important is how to SECTION the hair hold scissors etc....I thought this video was genius. Hold scissors like this, use these scissors because they are more forgiving, make these parts, cut on an angle, start small, check every 10 seconds, don't concentrate on a single spot. You even show the model making a mistake. BRILLIANT.

Jilian F. Jones: Tnak you so much for this tutorial! I think you did great and that the first part is not on camera isn't bad at all. Great explanation tho ☺️✌

syafira rahayu: I've tried, my hair turns out amazing thank youuu❤

L: Thanks for the video. Quick question, do I cut with a middle parting or cut with my natural off-centre/side-parting?

Realgar: I saw in one of the videos that you should no dry your hair stretched. What do you think of heatless curling methods then ? And doesnt a blow out with a round brush kind of stretch the hair too ? Xx

Max Brophy: YESS just finished and it looks good and super easy

May C.: when the hair is cut at an angle, does it matter at what angle and if yes what's the best angle ? also to the left or right ? Thanks !! Some great tips here w the trimming shears ! thanks for sharing

NT: That girls hair is FLAWLESS & this is a really clever trick! So many haters on here. If you can’t understand what he’s doing you need more help with life than trying to cut your hair. This isn’t a hard concept at all.

Reem K: So this feels like the only helpful “cut ur own hair” video since the model is actually cutting her own hair. BUT WE CAN’T SEE IT. Didn’t anyone check that camera?

Maddie Newman: Can you do a video on styling short/medium length hair? The only videos I ever find are to do loose curls in different directions and get the same look as everyone else :(

Karicat Watts: That helps. Gosh I can’t wait to go to the salon someday, someday. ‍♀️

k H: This looks too easy. Im starting to think that only thin hair can be cut at home(or curly because it hides flaws). I might try this next spring, after my cut mistakes grow out from the last thin, long-haired how-to video. It would be nice to see what it looks like from the back. Tell-tale sign of how even it is. FYI. I checked for an update on this long hair cut how-to because he said to look for one. I didn't see it. I felt like I wasted time.

Emily Greene: Do you have a preference on thinning shears that are available on amazon?

Jezi Morace: Right at about 6:39, when you're pulling the hair tie up, I notice the hair snagged or bunched up a bit, but you didn't reset the ponytail... (my OCD was screaming to fix it, and would most likely convince me to start over, if I were doing this).. So my question is, it doesn't affect the result? I should tell myself to chill and not redo my ponytail? Very cool video btw, thank you so much for the ideas!!

Michelle M Wong: Followed this and ended up with a head full of split ends :( No thinning shears for me ever again

Victoria: Thanks for the tutorial! And the wonky camera angles didn't prevent me from understanding the techniques at all! Some of these comments are so fing rude... sorry on behalf of my fellow humans. Keep posting!

SEVEN haircare: You're a the BEST teacher (still wish you'd be the one cutting our hair though!!)

Moni Fitz: This is actually best , most even haircut i found. And I have looked at a lot some with like 30k likes! Thank you

Getoutovjailfree: All I can focus on is how beautiful her hair is. Goals.

sugar lemo: wow this is great! I will try it!

Pixie Sprite: I'm a hair dresser and do most techniques like this hahaha it works so why get to fancy?

Fearless Life: I agree. These hair cutting videos would be awesome if we could actually see what’s going on

Helms Deep: Do you have sheer recommendations? I keep hearing you want really good scissors but I can't spend $100+ on sheers-- i'm wondering if it's necessary to spend that much.

Sabine Heimans: What if your hair is one length though? Any tips?

Chris Bowman: Beautiful young lady with GORGEOUS HAIR!!

Wondergirl 60s: This would’ve been a great video had you angled the camera to show what she did?‍♀️

Philyra86: I'll be trying this tomorrow since my ends really need a touch up. Just hope my arms are long enough to pull that hair tie from my head.

Rabbit Philly: Love method for shears with pulling thru thanks

Mehrnaz Moussavi: Wish I could see what she was doing when she was cutting her own hair.

Esprit Arkitekt エスプリアーキテクト: the model here has a centre parting, i wear mine to the side, does the parting make a difference when following these steps? i don't want to cut it with a centre parting then flip my parting back the tie side & 1 side of my hair is longer

Olga Alarcon: I like how he explains. The only thing is that I can't see what the model is doing

Lynn Bennett: If you have fine/thin hair NEVER use thing shears. If a beautician comes at you with these, get up, pay, and walk out.

Awhina R: Hahaha I’m glad you addressed the elephant in the room

HEMA MASIWAL: Did you really want your viewers to see how to cut hair or you wanted us to see how good her hair is? why the portion where she was cutting out of camera?

Hope Bullard: She looks beautiful before and after

sweet beep to the point: I get thinning shears at the dollar tree. In the pet section.

Ashley Hudson: Why does one side of her hair look longer? Do you have advice for someone who messed up their hair cutting it before watching this video? I messed mine up

La Femme Futile: Great tips. Thanks

Joan Belmont: Isn’t this supposed to be a “cut your own hair” demo? ‍♀️

Singing-in-the Rain: It would help if we could actually SEE what’s going on.

Rabbit Philly: Need a vid on how to cut long men’s hair like yours

Fiona A: What’s the point of doing a demonstration, if we can’t see what’s happening. People are relying on ‘seeing’ what’s going on!

Lindy Lindy: ...”then cut at an angle”-what angle...maybe just a little more info...ty for your effort this help...best to y’all

thesailorsaid: So....get a stylist to section my hair, exclude the right parts for me, hand me the ponytail he made for and watch as he cuts it for me?

Linda Glendenning: nothing cut, during filming “I know it would be nice if the camera was up about six inches”, but doesn’t move it.....

Sweet Harmony: YOU helped her by giving her a straight part in the back.

The Queen Dubrocq: Go straight to the minute 4:00

Jennifer Walworth: Thank you!!!!!

swizzleproxi: It really really annoyed me that all we couldnt see her actually doing the snipping all we were left to see was the top of her head so take this

tracy davis: Lost interest when I couldn't see initial cut

Maryeme Chaoui: Why the hell do i feel like he hooked up with her

Ural Uralie: We can’t see what she is doing when cutting perimeter ...

Amanda Peterson: This was redundant when you were near the camera and could have moved it to show what she was doing. Also your shears Links don't work "page not found"

Sarah T: Couldn't see the first most important bit

tyler jones: She messed with her hair and moved way too much.

Aleah Begum: Cant even see how shes cutting her hair

Auntie Denise: It would help to see what she’s doing

Karen Betancourt: pointless if I can’t see what she is doing.

BEAUTYCOSMO: Oh it’s a shame you can not see the actual technique of the hair

Nura Mohd: Urm, you could go over to your camera and adjust it down abit? Or that girl could have stood up for a while? It doesnt cost u an arm or leg to do those. ‍♀️

kelly k: good one and simple

Gaspard K: This guy is smokin hot !

Juliasblues: How to cut your own hair and Screw Up the Video ! Geesh.....

Deborah Paegelow: The camera didn’t show what she was doing.

Chisty A: PUT DOWN THE SCISSORS! DON'T CUT YOUR OWN HAIR. That's how you don't screw up your hair.

Caroline Anand: You sound like Jordan Peterson!

Say What?: It would've helped if the camera shows us where she's cutting?? Lol. No kidding

Baby Cakes: Need another, revised recording.

Mike Hawk: Dude that girl looks scared...

Jaimie Tets: 10 seconds in I stopped because of the way you over sexualize women. What does that have to do with cutting hair? Haven’t been to my stylist 1/2- 3/4 naked.

Amy Walker: That beard has got to go.

Monteen McCord: I can't believe you actually posted this worthless first clip. Wow.

Angie Barlow: Aaargh!! So my complaint is different than that of all others commenting; it's regarding my ONE pet peeve with all hair tutorials that, once again, happened here with this one - NOT SHOWING THE FULL END RESULTS! I am BEYOND frustrated with how much TIME I've spent watching hair trimming tutorials in their entirety, only to be disappointed once again because no one ever shows the BACK OF THEIR HEAD!! I mean, what is up with that?!? I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm going to dare try cutting my own hair at home and want it to look good and turn out EVEN all around, then I not only want to find a tutorial that has as many detailed steps (both thoroughly explained AND shown) as possible, but also one that shows a 360° view of the end result. *sigh* Seriously..... anyone reading this who decides to make their own tutorial....show the whole haircut. It's all about the results, dude..... ....I mean, if you're watching a cooking show, you wouldn't find a chef explaining all the detailed steps AND showing you how to make their favorite meal, only to show you the soup and appetizers at the end and not the main course or dessert....would you??

Dippydoo: Looks awful, one side longer than the other. Doesn’t look professional at all

tyler jones: It was hard to see everything

Silly Goose: This could have been helpful....

chegomanchego: If you would actually show the most important part of the vide it’d be great

Lisa Lyttle: Who else is here from U.K. because of teir 4? Salons shut☹️

Make Me Ovaaa: Omg epic fail ‍♀️

Alfred Alfredo: Too long

kate bowes: I can’t see

Patricia Neddo: Really.... lower the camera

Nicole: It looks the same

Rhonda Columbos: Why can't you show what is being done?

kreexp: Poor camera angle

Julie Wellington: What a pity the camera was not positioned correctly as we couldn't see how she cut her hair at all.
