Double Braided Edgy Ponytail Hairstyle, Back To School

Today we are starting a fun "back to school hairstyles" video series! Over the next month or so, we will be posting several quick and easy hairstyle ideas that will be great for school mornings.

We are calling today's hairstyle the "double braided edgy ponytail." This style may look slightly familiar to some of you, as this is kind of similar to the "gymnastics ponytail" we posted about a year ago. But for this style... no French braiding is required. Hooray for quick and simple!

Hair styles with volume on top and the sides slicked back seem to be quite popular right now.... almost a faux hawk look. If you have extra time in the morning, you could cornrow or twist the sides of her head to get that slicked back look (instead of using simple braids like we have here.) Such a trendy style!

You might have noticed her bangs (or fringe) area. We have always called this a "hair puff" but have also heard "hair quiff," "pompadour" or "hair poof." Whatever you like to call it, we think it is super cute and stylish (and really adds some edginess to any style.) In the video below, we show how to make these puffy bangs with no ratting or teasing.

This video is about medium hairstyles, long hairstyles, hair styles for girls

Hey guys so to start this ponytail, I'm going to part out a rectangle here at the top of her head and I'm going to make a little pouf up front. Alright, I've made a part on each side and then I brought it straight across in the back and there's two different ways. You can do this. If you don't mind routing your hair, you can just hold the hair up and route it down and that'll create some volume. I try to avoid that because it seems to damage her hair a little bit. So what I'm going to do instead is take this hair and twist it slightly and then push it forward, and that creates a little puff here. If you don't like how it's laying you can take it out and twist it, the other way, just kind of see which way is going to go better. I think I'm going to twist her hair here to the left. So once you get it looking about how you want it now, take this and spread this hair out a bit. So there's not like a lump where the twist was and then you can bobby pin it to do that. I'M going to just take a pin and kind of put it in diagonally and then I'm going to take one more and cross it so that the pins are crossing and that should hold it in place pretty securely. And then I usually do one more just to be saved the last one I'm going to bring straight across so there's three pins that are all interlocking and that should hold that pretty tight. So this is what it looks like from the side. It does create. Quite a bit of volume without having to wrap the hair, but if you prefer teasing it, you can do that instead. So now I'm going to make a couple of braids on each side of that little puff and to do that, I'm just going to come down from the corner of this part down to her ear. And then I'm going to split this section in half and I'm going to make a regular braid with each of these sections. I went ahead and sprayed a little bit of water on this section before I'm starting the braid just so that we don't have flyaways and I'm bringing the braid towards the back of her head. So you don't want to break straight down just braid towards the back, and then you don't need to go all the way down. Just bring it to the point where you are able to bring it into the ponytail and then I'm going to make one more braid. Here with this section and then do the exact same thing over on this other side, I'm going to part it down to her ear, split it in half and braid, two more braids, okay, I have all the braiding done. So here's what it looks like at this point - there's two braids over here and two braids over here. Now I'm going to pull everything up into a ponytail, so I'm going to place these braids out of the way pull the rest of her hair up and as you do this, you just kind of need to be careful not to pull too much on this hair. That'S being held by the bobby pins, because you don't want to pull that hair out of the little puff in front and I'm going to be making kind of a high ponytail. I think it looks better with the style to have it up higher on her head, but that is up to you so now that I have that initial ponytail made I'm going to bring these braids in, so I'm just kind of laying them where I want them To go and then I'm going to add one more elastic just over the top of everything, and then you can remove the ends of the braids. To finish this off, I'm just going to grab a small piece of hair here from under the ponytail wrap it around. The elastic and then just add one more rubber band here to tie that off. Alright, here's the finished style. This one is really good for school because it's quick and easy, but it looks cuter than just a standard. Ponytail
