2013lovemy: This reminds me of when I first started wearing my natural curls years ago (when it was pretty rare in the workplace). Occasionally I’d flat iron it (Nothing special like what girls do today, just shoulder length straight hair with a simple part on the side lol), and I’d get “WOW, you look SO professional with your hair like this.” , “why don’t you wear it like this more?” “your hair looks nice. No, REALLY it looks SO good like THIS.” The “compliments” always felt more like a hint that I should only wear it straight. Eventually I only felt comfortable wearing it straight on days I didn’t work so I could avoid their comments. I’m happy to see things are changing. It’s only been a couple of years since we started passing laws to prevent discrimination based on our hair texture. That’s crazy!

First thing the nearest weirdo would do is go “wow” and touch my hair for an awkward length of time. I can assure you, a person stroking your hair for 3 minutes or more isn’t cute. Or when I first got locs, friends would pull at them, and unravel them, which made the locking process harder. Hated it.
