100 Years of Black Hair | Allure

Nia (❁ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈): Imagine making fun of someone's hair for the way it grows out their head, lol I could never.

Jane: They're slaying these hairstyles but please specify that it's the history of black hair in America :)

MySisterIsAFoodie: Y’all missed out on a lot of trends: The beehive for the 60s, the curl set for the 70s, the perm rod set for the 80s, the swoop for the 90s, the flipped bob for the 90s, the Bantu knots for the 90s, the lace front weave for the 00s, the colorful wigs for the 10s, the crotchet braids for the 10s, the “wash and go” for the 10s. You coulda gone a lot more specific.

Taryn Trail: I remember I wore braids to school people said I looked like Medusa and laughed at me. I was rlly angry cuz it took me 5 hours to get done but I kept it in because I thought I looked beautiful with my braids, whether the white boys at my school laughed at me or not ✨

olivia: When I go to school and have box braids everyone is like “ THAT’S FAKE HAIR “ and i’m like it’s on my head not yours

LaToya Forever: Yasss! These women are Slaying every look.

Zaire Nicole: It’s amazing what we can do with our hair! Happy Black history month everyone

Briana LaShawn: I love how the “stunning, traditionally African hairstyle” is just the base for a sew-in. I guess they thought no one would notice

Chinwe: People in the comments saying it wasn't rebellion ‍♀️ It WAS. They were tired of such Eurocentric ideas forced upon them so they let their hair be to show it's normal. Rebellion DOES NOT equal bad all the time

Shay Lexus: can we talk about how gorgeous these models were omg

alien jesus: I would just like to say to any white girls reading this right now, you can love the hair. You can compliment the hair. But do not touch the hair like it's your pet. It's creepy

iiq_sxnflower Plays !: Black woman are amazing, stand up for who you are and never change, your beautiful! <3

Ewa Da Silveira: I’m really pissed off when people think they can police other women’s hair. F off everybody. She wants it to be natural and you don’t like, look somewhere else. She was a weave and you don’t like, look somewhere else.

janiya: *I don’t understand why certain people have watched the video and then proceeded to read the comments* if they were going to be offended about black people: -praising black hair -asking for their hair to not be touched -asking non black ppl to not wear our hairstyles Like who really forced you to watch the video?

Anointed by God: I can’t believe they didn’t mention sew ins/ weave for the 2000s

Bella’s Mom: Ladies, celebrate your hair. There’s so much diversity in the styles that African American women wear. Your hair, your choice.

MS. G: The ability for us to totally transform our hair is amazing.

Semper Decorus: As an afro-Brazilian, I absolutely love my hair. It's thick, curly and big.

Galaxygurl 12: The fact that there are hate comments and people not getting the point of this video is just disrespectful, the things black women went threw and you have the nerve to hate? goodbye. This video was lovely and amazing I loved it❤️

Lydee: Black people's hair is BEYOND diverse! And the fact that they needed at least 2 models to represent some of the decades, just proves that!

Mulan Paris: We’ve come so far ladies let’s keep pushing ✊✨

Black Panther: Loved this please do more often.

Cora Josie: That was cool! I like watching these through history videos it's interesting to see how things change throughout time :)

th3fun0ne: *2:19** all black kids can relate to our auntied or someone with this hairstyle and that's on period *

Orange Poofy: I really hate the fact that people associate me wearing my natural hair as rebellious. It has negative connotation all around. The way I was born, what I came to the world with is not me being rebellious. I hate those terms.

sharpeyedbombsquad: Looking back I'm glad I grew up in an environment where some girls felt comfortable talking to me about their hair. Made me realize what goes into different styles and some of the social stuff associated with black hair. It also just kinda normalized having those kinds of conversations.

mitsu-san: I love love LOVE seeing the progression of embracing natural black hair!!!

Mr. Emerald The Green: All of these ladies are just gorgeous, their smiles are pure sunshine ☀️

The Beyerle Bunch: What an amazing take on this. Our hair is sooo beautiful sooo many amazing transformations but all beautiful.

Lmani: I really want people at school to stop touching my hair without my permission

Day6atemywallet: I swear i love my heritage but TAKING CARE OF THE HAIR IS A STRUGGLE

Adanna Adebayo: Yesss! These hair styles all slayed. And all these women are gorgeous ✊ our hair will always be so magical and versatile. I remember the first time I got braids in the 90’s

Erica A.: People at school knowing thinking my braids are cute: Me deep down knowing how long it took and how much back pain it caused:

Aprilh03: I like to straighten my hair because it’s easier to style in the mornings and I don’t have to detangle everyday and cause so much tugging and tension on my hair. Not always because of Eurocentric standards

ابن سبيل: I'm straight haired, and I love curls. Girls with curls are awesome!!

vinny: These black queens spend so much time on their hair and that is just amazing to me, like mad respect to all of you you are all so beautiful

Love Child: This just reminded me how amazing it is to be BLACK

Mason Talarico: Black girls are gorgeous. I liked some of the hairstyles, but I absolutely love the 70s afro. I just like naturally curly hair, and I think that the afro is so cute.

Lady Rosemary: Straightening black hair wasnt just a style; black women couldn't get work unless they did. That still goes on today.

Jada Wayda: proud to be black

ur mom: I love being black, I also love my culture✊✊✊

Jessica Day: The 1970s look was absolutely stunning

April Bay: I remember one day while my family was eating supper, my Mom was telling us how sad it was because when she was a kid, she was friends with a couple black girls, and they would always feel insecure about their hair and try to straighten it. And my mom said it was it always almost made her cry, and how she wished she had their hair because it looked so beautiful.

Balegdah: I love these hair styles and as a kid African American female I will represent my culture and I will do what I want with my hair. I also remember when I told my mama that I wanted to wear my natural hair to school and there was a very short girl that always sat behind me and I felt bad because she already couldn't see before, now I wear braids because my hair is easier to tame

Caitlyn Martin: People in the comments are really degrading actually and I didn’t expect that! My hair has been an issue for me for a while! My dad would make me get relaxers and my hair would break of and I got scabs on my scalp that would sometimes bleed. Maybe not as demanding as a couple decades ago, but the beauty standards for a while have been that straight hair was more beautiful, cleaner, and more professional. I believed that for a while and I hated my natural kinks and curls. But recently, I big chopped without telling my dad and he was furious! He told me I was ugly with short hair( mostly looked short because of shrinkage) but my white stepmom has shorter hair than most boys! He made me gel it back into a ponytail! My Dad may have tricked me into thinking that I had to change myself to be beautiful, but random person reading this comment, you are beautiful the way you were born, the way God made you. Whether you have long straight red hair or short 4c hair! Love yourselves for who you are! Don’t depend on others to tell you your worth!

Sunshine Julia: All those people in the video are absolutely beautiful! I’m a huge fan of their hair and smiles of course!

Tianna Wataah: I hope that black women continue to go natural or don’t chemically process their children’s hair to begin with like my mom did (but I transitioned a few years ago). it’s your choice but wearing your hair natural is where it’s at. ❤️

Brain Dead: When a black person is called beautiful I ask that you don’t say “well everyone is”. We know that but we’re not going to say “everyone is beautiful”. If someone called you beautiful then someone turned around and said “well everyone is” then it defeats the purpose of calling you beautiful and making you feel better in your own skin

taylor lol: all these styles are so beautiful ❤️

Small town country girl: We had so many hairstyles in every decade you can't just fit them in one 3.5 min video!!!

Aralynn Hoover: I wish my hair was like that I love afros with tight curls and braids people who can do all of that with their hair are so lucky they are beautiful

Jasmin Krause: Hi I’m a white South African and have been fascinated in the beauty of African hair as I have been surrounded by it my whole life, when I moved to the UK I was devastated to see the lack of natural hairstyles that I have always admired . I love educating myself on the topic and love that today it is more acceptable today to rock your natural hair texture. I encourage everyone to educate yourselves of the histories of different people. Also If it is not your culture or your heritage please don’t wear it. Especially without knowing it’s history.

Jenny Oyster: Black hair is literally the most versatile hair on Earth. The proof is in the pudding, lol. It's absolutely amazing. ❤️❤️

General Frost: The change in music as per time passes by...just according to the type of decade.. awesome!

Hafhra Yoyo: TODAS AS NEGRAS DEVERIAM SER FAMOSAS! ❤️☺️

Hermione S: i loved the 1960 and the first 1990 one!! so pretty!

lovely kat: This is stunning

lelys: The fact that people are offended by this video is so funny to me. Black women have been put down for literally everything until this very day. Now when we get representation about us and historically how our hair has been and the different styles we've had throughout the years, y'all throw a fit. And for what? Black girls get teased for our hair ALL THE TIME. And when we try to uplift ourselves and each other because we finally realize how beautiful we really are, you guys get so butthurt. Black people in general are always targeted and have always been looked down upon, give us a break. Let us praise each other and be proud of who we are. Thanks.

BlacknBougie: I wear my natural hair as a statement that I won't conform to society's idea of what I should look like. But I also it bcuz that's the way it grows out of my scalp and I'M PROUD OF IT ‍♀️❤

Mikligardur: Nothing beats the 80s in music, movies and hairstyle period.

jdstep97: 3:22. She is sooo pretty. I love her hair. So glad these styles are more socially accepted nowadays.

Alicia Berkley: I love box braids! I’ve only ever had then once but I love them.

Nesha Britwood: I love it! I love how everyone is back to embracing their natural selves (Hair wise). Now if everyone can go back to embracing their natural bodies.

Shells Stoner: Y’all talked about baby hairs but I’ve seen none here ma’am

Donna Hull: I love the sentiments of this post. I love that you're highlighting Black American's hair BUT y'all needed a black hairstylist because these hair styles are missing the sharpness and pristine that only a hairstylist that knows black hair can bring.

Lady Pink: I love the 1960s hair!!!!

LalitaLoves: I came here for the 1970s hairstyle and was not disappointed. ❤️

Michael Cus: black women are so beautiful!

SmartFashionFairy: My mom has the 80s hair style! there’s a graduation pic of her with a Jheri curl

Jasmyne Gholar: I really liked this! I want to see one on fashion! They have some but particular to white men and women and although it was prominent, I would like to see one for blacks as well. :)

J: I love this it’s beautiful

Imi F: This is more 100 years of African American hair. Black doesn't just mean African American...

CHRISTI XX: Our hair history is awesome.

Allhisa Edmond: Black lives matter ✊✊✊✊ Love my culture ✊ Amazing hair ‍‍

Katerina Tkachyova: Oh god, how much I LOVE black women ❤️You are so so so beautiful, heavenly perfect! And your hair and hairstyles are stunning oh god

Laura Jeremias: Finally something worth to watch and learn on YT! ❤️

Erth: Are we just gonna ignore the fact how beautiful these young lady and their hair are

Baran Ghaforian: I'm not even black, but seriously. If someone doesn't wear their hair natural and straightens it, it doesn't mean they're ashamed of their hair. They might do it simply because they like it.

Ebony Mckinney: Would’ve loved to have seen at least one model of darker complexion, but overall good video ☺️

zipporah: When I was younger I'd always straighten my hair but now I love be having afros black culture✊✊✊

MjLuva x: I wish they gave us a tutorial on how to do the hair styles

YASM!N: black hair is so beautiful. personally i really like 4C hair but all hair types are amazing

Patricia Longan: Normally I cringe at how people used to do their hair. This, on the other hand, shows how fashionable black women were and still are to this day. Rock it girls!

Sista’s speak!: That 1970s look looks like she’s getting ready to add her sew-in every Black woman on here knows what I’m talking about

Tna -: All of these are so beautiful

Okima Wilcox: Of all of the hair through time vids I’ve seen, only the black hair vid has styles you can still rock every time period today with no one really noticing.

couchmermaid: The things y’all can do with your hair is magic

Makayla Nhiev: The girl who had the Afro is literally rocking it and I am LIVING FOR IT

Lucy Minna: Ok but the outfit the 1950s girl was wearing was AMAZING

La sénégalaise: A toutes les époques l’africaine reste magnifique ! je m’ennuie jamais avec mes cheveux crépus, j’ai vraiment trop de chance ♥️❤️

girlwithnojob: I remember i went to school with box braids once and everyone was like “how did your hair get so long?” “Are you trying to be white?” “LEMME SMELL IT” After that day, never wore box braids again.

Hannah Deason: Ok but every single one of these ladies are honestly drop dead gorgeous!

TheMovieMyLife: An excellent selection of hair models.  The fashion stylist and makeup artists did a great job too.

dd._. oxo: I love my hair! I can do whatever I want with it. Straighten it curl it or whatever. Some of my classmates who’s hair kinda remain the same all school year ask me if I like my hair. And I love mine.

Camille s Jackson Lightworker: I’m loving these styles

Musiclover __: I loveee this video .. so many unique hairstyles we have

keith richard's lifespan: I’m a white girl, but I love watching black women get their hair done. It’s so satisfying and pretty.

bujitapanda: I am not Black, I am Mexican but I have a major respect for African hair because of all the time and effort ladies put onto their hair, as taught by my roomate whom she moisturize and always rock her tiny Afro!

Kearsh Sas: Why do they look all gorgeous to me? those hairstyles rock!

GABRIEL PER SI: no kidding these are the best type of hair, always so beautiful and so interesting... the versatility tho, BOMB
