Hey Queens Monica here back to explore another black owned business and if you have hair like mine, you've, definitely snapped a hair tie or two or five million. My hair ties always break, but those days aren't over now that I found keziah dama and her swirly curly hair ties. These are seriously the most innovative hair ties ever and today. Keziah is gon na show us how she invented them and how to use them. Follow me thank you for talking with me today. Thank you for that introduction. That was nice. Well, please tell me about swirly curly, unlike what you offer swirly curly is a really affordable luxury brand for the naturally curly community. We offer you know, hair products that can work for all types of hair, curly hair. I should say the brand was just kind of built off of my struggles, for you know my natural hair that I had pretty much my whole life and finding that there was such a need for hair styling tools, hair accessories and education for the naturally curly community. Yes and I'm I'm still learning so much about how to take care of this yeah, tell me about your natural hair journey. My mom is actually Norwegian and Mexican, so she looks like a white lady and she had no idea how to do my hair. So we really struggled with it growing up and I was the only girl in school that would wear my hair out like an afro and then I would also wear like a half of a wrap and I would get teased all the time because everyone had straight Hair, all the other mixed girls or black girls had straight hair, so really struggled for a long time, and then we found out about relaxers so that really solved a problem for, like you know, ten years overall, I did still feel like you know. I didn't really have like my own look and I was kind of longing for that. So when I was in college I just got really curious, so I was like you know. I miss my old hair. I like forgot what it looked like. I eventually got to a place after about nine months of growing it that I was like. Oh, I can't I can't deal with this, so I just I just cut it off in the naturally curly community. It'S called a big chop and I just started learning about my hair through YouTube and other women and trying to work and make my hair. You know work for me so we're at a point where you're, like I'm, going back to my natural hair. How did that lead to the creation of swirly curly? I was always going from working at a restaurant to working out at the gym to auditioning. Like you know, two or three times a day, I would put all this work and get my hair. You know in a big fro and then I would want to put it up to go to the gym and I didn't have anything to like snap on or you know I just didn't - have any type of hair accessory for my hair about a year later I Decided to make it - and I just heard her type and started making him from my studio apartment and started selling it online. Oh, my god, so you were physically like making these hair ties. I had a whole operation. I was doing everything in the business customer service. Marketing, you know packaging shipping - I was, you know all places. Can you explain to me exactly what the snappy hair tie is? It'S a non elastic made out of fabric only snap on snap off hair tie. It'S also machine washable and dryer safe. So if it stretches out with the snappy you just wash it, you dry shrink back to their original size. It'S made for thick curly hair, because what we find is that when we put a hair tight in our hair a lot of times it doesn't fit. It'S too small, and once we put it in our hair, because our curls are so big when it's time to take it out, it gets stuck and then we're often pulling out our hair breaking her hair or having to cut it out. Just my experience, I was younger helping me so many times exactly. Can you tell me about who your mentor is? Is it your brother for the longest time it was really my brother. We still talk, you know on day to day and, like you know, in fact the question I call him. When did you first realize that swirly curly was becoming a success? One is when people started reaching out saying. Oh, I would love to like do like a product review for your brand and you know, can you send me, send me some product and I was like wow like people are actually now reaching out to me. I don't have to go and you know, find them and reach out to them. Why do you think customers really respond to swirly curly? I think um the reason why most people respond by it like it and use it is because it's so unique and it's made for their hair. Curly hair was never the thing, so people weren't educated on it and now people are becoming educated and people can't embrace it. I think that's why people really love the breath because they're like something. Finally, for me dedicated to me and then also knowing that the founder looks like them and represents them really excites them. Well, I really love the tagline. That'S like right at the top of your website. We are beautiful. We are proud. We are natural, black-owned woman. Why was it important to include that? I think people don't want to just buy from these brands that they don't. They have no connection to anymore, and so it was really important for us to really talk about who we stand for, because again we find brands. Maybe they start off being focused on you know: black hair care and in the black market and then they'll start to expand. You know to meet revenue, goals and growth and then it's all sudden, it's not for you anymore. So once you just struggle the most with their hair, it's you know African American women. You know curly natural hair. So that's what we really want to know that this brand is for them. Mm-Hmm was celebrating black women like a goal, and how do you feel like you do that? Because I feel like the products? Do we wanted to make sure that we were giving black women and the community something that they've never had before? The brand is a way to celebrate our beauty and to celebrate what amazingness we are and also to to elevate us? I think and have us feel like we are a part of something that's really luxury. What do you think a brand needs to really do and keep in mind to truly be like an inclusive brand. It'S so easy to water down your brand because as an entrepreneur, there's so many opportunities I mean so much comes up every day that I could take advantage of. But it's it's like. I have to stay focused on. What'S most important and again it's our customers number one, because we wouldn't have a business without them and also making sure that our customer needs are met and making sure that our customers know from our branding exactly who we are for. But how do you feel like swirly curly is giving back to the community? We created the online educational portion, which is coral college, where we really help guide women through their process of their hair. So we structured it in a way that you can take online courses and you can complete them and once you do you'll understand, you know about your hair a bit more and also just really, you know maximize their hairs potential. So that's something that we do as well: curly haired, like yes, exactly yeah, and then we do also a live Q & A call once a month on Facebook. So it's a closed group. I lead it and then people can come on and get direct help with me, whatever they need for their hair. Oh that's great you're, so on the ground with everything cute very accessible. Thank you as a black business owner. What are some values that are important for you to uphold in your work? I actually have heard before you know just from other people that, like they don't want to do business with black owners, because they've just find they're, not professional, and things like that and I've experienced it myself and that's something that I really wanted to change. I didn't want to be like you know, just the the same experience that most people have had, and so, when it comes to running the business customer service is like top tier for us, because again, your customers are everything in the business. You want to make sure that we're professional for the black community and for them to just have a different experience. Is it important for you to support other black businesses like especially like in the beauty niche yeah? Absolutely I mean I actually look for other, like black owned female entrepreneur. You know business and I like to collaborate with them as much as I can to support each other. Just because I feel like there's just not that many, and so it is really important for me to do as much as I can to help grow their business and and also like leverage. You know their customer base because it would be the same as ours. So, as the black woman running a business, what advice would you have for maybe other black women or considering the same? Definitely yes, I'm like do it go for it and when you want to make sure you get a mentor, because when somebody's already done it they've they've already, you know, did all the hoops and the errors and stuff like that, so they can help. You not do that well because I thank you so much for talking with me today. I am such a believer in these hair ties. You definitely got to try these swirly curly hair ties, because they're gon na take care of your hair and they're so easy to take out and that snap, it's sad. I love it. It'S so great, yes, keziah and her swirly curly hair ties have seriously changed. My life forever, no more broken ear ties.
