What'S up guys matt back here from freesalon education.com, i've got a great video for you guys today we're going to be going through step by step, how to cut a short shag haircut. It'S a very popular haircut coming into 2022. So i know you guys are gon na like it, i know you're gon na be able to use it uh. Let me know in the comments below what you think of this haircut as we go through it all the techniques i'm using. If you have questions comment, those as well, the key to that algorithm is your comments, so make sure you're letting me know what you think below, whether you like it, whether you don't like it, it doesn't matter. It helps the algorithm, no matter. What so. Thank you guys so much for tuning into the video subscribe to the channel, hit the notification bell. So you get the notifications anytime. I make a video i'm going to be making a ton of videos coming up. So thank you guys for joining me. Let'S get started here, we go all right guys, so we're going to start off the cut by separating the hair at the division point. How do you find that? That'S pretty simple, you look at the hairline and you draw a line straight vertical all the way up to that apex, the high point of the head, and that creates our separation from front and back the way that we're going to be working. The layering on the top is pulling everything straight up from the head shape, cutting it at 90 degrees. That'S going to create a nice open, feel to the haircut i'll, explain that more a little bit later. The key here is to start your layers at the length that you're looking to achieve so the benefit of starting it at the shortest point, and really the shortest point of the layers is that you don't end up with a surprise at the end of oh, i Wish this layer was a little bit longer or i wish it was a little bit shorter or so on so forth. So really determining that length, i'm going nice and short in this haircut because we're doing a short shag, so you're going to cut it shorter than you actually would think, but the end result turns out to be pretty long. The other thing is we're working with a traveling guide throughout the top. So i take that old section which was directly in the center and now you can see i'm pulling it to the new section. So we cut everything over top of the part of the current parting. So that's going to allow me to have that traveling guide. I work my way all the way over to that parietal ridge, which is the curvature of the head separating top and bottom, and then that's when i'm gon na over direct everything straight up, which will give me that over direction and that length on the sides. So you'll see as we're working through it um kind of how that works, but also look at that fringe that we're creating it's kind of a nice bonus within this cut as well. The other great thing is we're going to stamp more of a fringe in later. In this haircut, so elevating the hair cutting layers in the fringe actually makes it easier because there's less density, uh less bulky feel in the fringe. When i go to cut it later dry, so you get kind of the benefits all the way through now we're hitting that parietal ridge area. This is a nice overhead view, notice that everything now comes straight up so before i was pulling that guide to the new section, cutting the new section over the parting, and now i just as i work my way down the side of the head. I just over direct everything straight up: that's going to give me maximum layers and maximum length at the bottom, because the over direction is so extreme, so just kind of working. My way through that and i'll do the same exact thing on the opposite side me, foreign, all right, so i hope you guys are enjoying the video so far wanted to. Let you guys know a couple things that we have going on at freesalon education.com. So i did come out with a cutting system, so if you're confused by any of the terminology that i use, i did an eight haircut step-by-step digital haircutting system. It comes with a book that talks about the terminology. You get. The eight step-by-step videos like i said, and then also you get a certificate to hang in your salon as you complete the uh digital cutting system. So it's the best way to understand everything that i'm talking about in these videos. We make them quick here, but there it's a little bit more of a study format. It'S more organized and you've got eight basic haircuts. You can go through from short to long to really understand everything and how i think about hair cutting how i've learned over the years in cutting hair. I just organized it all together for you guys, so that's 49 bucks it's available on shop fse, which is our online store. Also, we have a haircutting razor called the tri-razor. It'S our patent-pending designed razor. It'S a three-sided tool. It cuts three different percentages of hair. So it's a really fun kind of swiss army knife of hair cutting. So if you love creating texture and doing razor cuts, that's a really cool tool to check out. It'S called the tri-razor uh by free salon, education. We also have brushes tools: uh scissors, my mattebex scissor, just relaunched so tons of stuff on there. If you guys uh want to support the channel in that way, you can go on there and purchase your tools so enough about all of that. Let'S get back to the haircut here, we go all right so now, as we work into the back of the head, we're going to be pivoting off that high point of the head, so really working kind of pie shaped sections as i work through uh also traveling Guides so we're gon na cut it based on the center we're gon na take our guideline from the top uh that we previously cut already and we're just gon na work, a line parallel to the floor all the way through it. So what i wan na do is show you guys the angle right here, just working from that point as a guide and then drawing that keep my finger angle parallel with the floor and just kind of work. My way through it. You might see that i angle a little bit more just to give myself a little more length. Um, that's really up to you guys, but then again make sure you push that hair uh push that guide line that previously cut hair over top of the section that you're gon na be cutting that allows that traveling guide to work all the way through we're gon Na do the same thing on the opposite side and just work our way, um to finish off the cut all right, so you can see all the layers popping through on the cut love this haircut uh. Now we're gon na go through, choose your favorite styling uh product, and then i've got my favorite styling tools right here. This is the ergo diamond head brush, and then i go in with my ergo round brush all available on shop fse our website, and then i do a little bit of dry cutting once i get it dry. You'Ll also notice that i put some clips in there. Just to hold the hair in place when i spray it and then i detail that fringe - and this is where you'll see, that lack of density, because i cut the layers in the fringe, so it makes it really really simple to go through and just cut. My line because the hair's not so bulky, if i just let the hair and tried to do this first, it would have been so thick and then i would have got a bulky line. It wouldn't have that kind of trendy pc look to it. So you can see all the movement in this shag. I love the layering, i love the shape of it. Let me know what you think in the comments, but there it is alright guys. So if you made it this far in the video, then i think that you probably liked the video. Let me know in the comments what you thought uh. Let me know your thoughts on haircuts. You want to see in the future i'm going to be creating videos constantly. So i want your guys's ideas so that i can share those with you and how i would do it. How would go about it, whether it's a cut or color whatever it is? Let me know, and then i can create it for you. That would be super cool, so make sure you subscribe to the channel like these videos share them with your friends. In whatever platform you can, whatever one's your favorite facebook youtube instagram tick, tock whatever it is, share the video please, let's get it out there. Let'S keep spreading the free salon, education, love and remember. If you're trying to take your hair cutting game to the next level - and you really want to understand my videos - everything that i say the terminology - that i talk about - uh check out the free salon, education, hair, cutting system available on shop fse and the last thing Is i just want to say a huge thank you to you guys out there for being subscribers. Some of you guys have been subscribing for a very long time. I'Ve been making these videos for almost eight years um. I even had somebody say that it was my thousandth video. They were keeping track. I wasn't even keeping track on my last. One should have celebrated it more, but it's because of you guys out there that i make these videos and i wouldn't be able to do it without you guys. So, thank you so much for the support uh, always having my back on these channels waiting for the next video uh, always commenting always being a part of the community uh, the free salon, education community. To me, uh is the best community in the hair industry and i really appreciate all of you guys, uh and again the support. So thank you. Let me know in the comments what you want to see next and i'll see you guys on the next video there's a few things that you have to understand about hair cutting before you can really jump into doing haircuts. These are all things i'm i'm gon na teach you guys in the next eight haircuts, truly understanding the. Why, behind what you're doing in hair cutting can make hair cutting so much more fun and make you way more successful behind the trip you

Sparkly One: I’m a huge fan of layered haircuts! I’m so tempted to cut mine like this again I’m 61 & grew up in the 70’s and 80’s

Glenna Brooks: I just turned 77 and remember the shag!! I love this haircut.!! Been trying to get my hair cut like that for years and nobody knew what I was talking about. thanks for the videos. Hope a lot of beauticians watch it!!

Kerry Campbell: I’ve never stopped doing this cut in one way or another just cut my 13 year old granddaughters long locks to this shag,, only she calls it the Wolf cut

Robin Lochary: Love this cut just finding someone that can do it is a difficult mission

Cathy Rackowski: Best haircut I’ve ever! Had it in the 70’s thrilled it’s back for all to enjoy. Works beautifully on my older thinner 60 something hair!

Kathy Preziosa: I am no longer working as a hairdresser but still love the industry. So cool that you give back in this platform!

Gina Reed: Love this cut! You make it look so simple. Then again you've been doing it for a minute! FYI, this morning before cosmetology class, I watched your basic 180 because I had to do this in class. Had a half hour before class and just kept watching until class. Nailed it! I couldn't believe it! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your simplistic teaching and great tips! Your awesome!!!!

Kathy Squee Machacek: I love your videos! I would love to see you explain how to avoid accidentally removing the length if the hair were longer

Jen LeBlanc: Love, love, love this cut, and your styling is beautiful. Thanks for all you do.

Reg Vass: I love the shag! I wore it in the 70’s and 80’s. My Mom was a hairdresser, she went to NY to learn how to do the Jane Fonda “Klute” shag. It has always been my favorite hairstyle but I am now 70 and do not have the volume of hair I had then. Not sure this would work on me now.

Jessica Robertson: Love this video! Just got the tri razor and I am in LOVE! Would like to see more videos using that tool as your primary source and learn how to use it to it’s full potential.

Debbi Sondergard: I think you are amazing! And I really enjoy watching you work. My question is, how do you compensate or adjust what you do when you are working on an actual client who may have a strong hairline or cowlicks that may cause the hair to not cooperate so easily. Thank you, Debbi

Janice Barker: You explained very well. easy and simple to follow. Keep it up!

Nora Jewell: Amazing artist, Thanks Matt you are an amazing, humble, professional and caring guy, your videos are so much fun and full of content, I'm studying Cosmetology but haven't learn a thing here but with your videos, I'm taking your clases yes or yes!!! Thanks again!! You are awesome!!

Dawn Kastner: Thank you for the amazing video..love how well you explain the cutting technique and show different angles.

Mr. Meitei: Every tutorial videos you have made are easy to understand and followable. Love you Idol from Manipur, India. Please make sure about the colour techniques videos.

Carin Wogahn: Matt! these purple guides you have on the video are amazing, I'm often watching someone in person or on a video and can tell if they are holding the hair totally horizontal or slightly diagonal.. unless they say and then it also looks like finger position changes and I'm unsure of how they are moving through... so thank you for this added tool. Love it, and the quality and time you put into the video.

Sharon Brown: I've been getting a long shag for the last 46 years. I absolutely love it but I can also tell you that not everyone does it the same and to get somebody to take the kind of time that's needed to do the layers correctly is impossible I've paid varying prices for the haircut and sometimes at $12 haircut was 10 times better than the $60 cut not everybody does it correctly how can I explain to them how I want it.

Sharon Dilleshaw: I love this haircut SO much❗I pray that I can find a stylist in my city that will cut ✂️ my hair using your technique. Bravo❗ Great job

Somayya blog: I love that yellow hair colour and I was wondering how to get it thanks alot Matt for always doing the videos of the best haircut you do. It's been 3 years Im getting those classes and learned so much about the alignment, the sections, elevation and you know that all you taught about

Alison Zetic: Thank you. Layered like a pro! Love layered cuts. I was wondering if you can show a video on layered cuts with wavy hair. Have a very difficult time finding hairdressers that can cut layered hair on waves. Thank you enjoyed the video very much. :)

Hooked on Hair: Thanks, I did this today it was easy to follow and a great result. :-)

Noreen Freeman: Thank You Matt , you’re awesome Best Teacher, I’m debating in a shag now, my hair is curly so it’s easy . But thinking of going back to a Bob ,lob , but too much work ! blowing , straight iron , product on my tinted hair , making it dryer ! But will decide soon . Thank You again for inviting me .

Nora Jewell: I love your videos, and your passion for it's as well as the way you teach.thanks so much!!

Kristine Beckstrom: Love this haircut! I have tried to get hairdressers layer my hair and do this same cut. But when I walk out it is never this cut. I don't know if they are scared two layer it or if they don't know how. I tried just the other day to get the same cut only short right underneath my ears. I also told her that she could not put too many layers in it but again I walked out and my hair was not shagged enough. Again leaving the salon disgruntled. Please come to my town so that I can get my hair done I hope that someone like you would be able to fix it which I'm sure you could because there's still enough hair that you would be able to later it more please come to me and help me I am 61 and for once in my life I would love to have a layer cut like I want it and be happy with it.

Marie Davis: I love this cut. You explain your cuts so well

Marina Marluz: Beautiful cut! I have a question, is it advisable for a person with abundant hair or would it create a lot of volume?

Sylvie Lachance: Thank you for your excellent service,I'm a certified hairstylist barber, and thanks to you I can learn how to make different styles(update myself cause I graduated from my course back in 1996 in witch they only thought us the basics and the specific style my client wanted.

Noreen Freeman: Great cut , styling also , BUT with my hair requires much more work to make it stay , Velcro rollers , hot rollers , tons of spray , plus to make it last a couple days . Matt’s styling is great if you want to shampoo , blow every day . I know he is demonstrating a great cut , just saying . T. Y.

Holly Love: I was born in the early 60s and have always loved the shag haircut. So happy this is coming back in style. Going to have my daughter cut my hair into a shag.

Chris Pierson: Love the shag cut! Hope it comes back in style.

Theresse Grady: I think this style would really suit me. My hair likes to fall forward and that's how this cut is. I had a shag when I was 11 yrs old (1971) and I've always remembered it as my favourite hair cut!

T.L. McManus: Love this cut! Looks great!

AnilaGemzBeauty: Simplest way to cut shag. Really loved it. Thanks

Jodi Semone: Great haircut and great tutorial. Question. How do you grow this cut out I have my cut in a shag and am ready to move on to another style So many layers. Any suggestions for a style while growing it out? Thanks

Karen Idsoe: Made it look effortless. Your technique is polished. Well done!

Marla Jones: Love this cut!! Thank you Matt!!

jewel konoa: When I was in my 30's, back in the 80's, I wore my hair in a mullet. Could you do a video of an updated, modern feminine version of a mullet cut?

paisley dreamz: over 60 for hair that is thin AND fine. I've been wearing an aline bob for ages but it's looking rather scraggly . Thank you!

Soy Ary Bruno: Me encanto!!! i Hope someone can cute my hair like that I absolutely love it

Jono Mariwood: Thank you so much for this video. I have been talking to people about the shag cut for a while and nobody seems to get it. Your video gives me legitimacy. I have been trying for sometime to find somebody who can do a shag. It doesn’t matter how I describe it they all get it wrong. Having learned this cut in the 70s when I was hairdressing for a while, for most of my life I did my own cut. More recently I let my hair grow fairly long and a few months ago decided I would like to have a long shag. Again going to the salon they got it wrong and made a mess of it. Unable to find anybody else who can fix it, I ended up fixing it myself but because I can’t get the angles for a long shag on myself I had it up losing most of my length. I would love to see a video of a long shag cut. I’m thinking Farrah Fawcett length. Thanks very much

Kirsty Macfarlane: Not keen on the fringe, would love to see it with a longer, curtain fringe and how would I style that myself? It's gorgeous but I don't think I could replicate that and I'm pretty good at styling my hair!
