4 Tips You Can Use To Get Your Natural Hair Fall Ready

fall weather
Fall is officially upon us ladies! Although some of us are still scratching our heads and wondering where summer went so fast, the season of cute scarves, chunky sweaters, and hot tea is now here. While we may have had a lot of fun with our natural hair regimen in the summer, the change in season and temperature also means a change in how we care for our tresses. But how do we switch our regimen to make it fall ready? The four tips listed below may help!

Updos

Like we said above, fall is the season of warm, comfortable, and chunky layers. But, even though your infinity scarf is super cute, if you’re wearing your natural hair down, the material can snag and damage your ends.

Instead of wearing your hair down this fall, play around with different updos that will keep your ends out of the way. Be mindful of the material of your clothes, so that they don’t dry out your hair and cause split ends.

Protective Styling

Most of us are super busy during the fall – running to school, going to work, or just handling the millions of different tasks we need to complete on a daily basis. So we’re a lot less likely to style our hair and leave it out. That’s where protective styling comes in!

Finding the right protective style for you will not only help safeguard your ends, but it’ll also shave some time off your morning routine, making it easier to go fight with the harsh weather changes outside. You can try styles like braids or twists, but if you don’t want your scalp to be too exposed, you can try wigs* or weaves to do something different.

Heavier Products

Fall is also the season where our coconut oil* has finally returned to its solid state! The cold temperature and harsh winds can be a little tough on curly hair, so it’s important to use products that are heavier and can withstand the changes.

Many naturals begin adding shea butter* to their regimen, which is a heavy butter that really seals in moisture. You can also make the switch to a heavier oil like castor oil* (mixed with something else, if you’re a fine haired curly girl), to smooth your hair and leave it moisturized for days on end.

LOC Method

Personally, I do the LOC method year round, but this is an important wash day step in the winter. What IS the LOC method? It stands for (L)iquid (O)il (C)ream, and it’s done after washing your hair.

You basically add a liquid (water or a water based leave in conditioner*), the oil of your choice, and a cream or butter. The LOC method is the perfect time to add those heavier butters* and oils* that we spoke about before. This helps seal moisture in our hair, which is harder to do with the many cold, dry winds that we experience.

And these are our 4 tips for transitioning your hair regimen into fall. What’s your number one tip?
