What is Ombré Hair Color, and How Do I Get It?

Do see the term “ombré hair color” everywhere you look lately? Well, I do too.. and until recently, I had no idea what it meant. However, after a little research, I quickly discovered how awesome it is. Now, I would now like to share with you what I found out about the newest hair trend, ombré hair.
Ombré hair color is color that gradually fades into another color (typically lighter) towards the ends of the hair. You may notice most A-listers rocking ombre hair lately; it’s been extremely popular in Hollywood for the past few years. I’ve actually noticed it on the celebs for a while now, but didn’t know what it was called.
In fashion, the term “ombré” refers to the graduation of color in a garment. Furthermore, the term originates from the French language, and means “shaded.”
What Exactly is Ombré?
Essentially, ombré color should almost look like grown-out hair color. This is good news for those who can’t afford to (or don’t want to) color their hair often. Now your outgrowth is considered to be trendy.
Key defining factors:
- Ideally, the hair should blend from dark hair to light hair with almost no transition line, and should appear to “fade” from one color to another.
- Ombré hair color works on all types of hair, but looks best on longer hair.
- Although it seems like most A-listers usually use natural colors, ombré can range from any type of color, including punky, and fun, unnatural colors
How to Achieve Ombré Hair Color:
- The first step is to pick a shade of color that will work best for you and the look you want to achieve.
- To blend out the line of demarcation, you need to tease the hair that you want to color. The more you tease your hair, the softer the ombré will be. Next, apply color to the ends of the hair. If you are going to use foils, you can drag them down the hair shaft after the color processes for a few minutes. This will help achieve the “melting” effect of the color.
- The processing time will depend on the color you use and you should always follow the directions.
- Wash out the color like normal, and follow with a good conditioner. I recommend Joico K-Pak Reconstructor.
- Voila! You finally have ombré hair color.
