What is Jazzing Hair Color?

Jazzing hair color is a temporary/semi-permanent hair color (read more about the different types of hair color) made by Clairol. It was developed in the ’80’s, specifically for ethnic hair, although it can be used on any type of hair.

Clairol wanted a vibrant hair color that was “shiny-sheer,” without causing hair damage. In fact, it can be used directly after a relaxing service, on permed hair, previously colored hair or virgin hair.

Since this product is ammonia free and doesn’t require the use of developer, it will not cause any damage to your hair. 

However, for a more vibrant end-result, you can lighten your hair before applying Jazzing hair color, which may cause damage (but here are some tips to keep bleached hair healthy.)

What Shades Are Available?

The Clairol Professional website lists the following shades as available:

The clear shade can be used to add a gloss over your natural hair, or previously colored hair. It can also be used to dilute any of these shades for a less dramatic result.

Why Should You Use This Product?

If you are trying to add some color to your hair without damage (especially after a perm or relaxing service) or blend greys without the use of ammonia or peroxide, this product is for you. Keep in mind that it will not completely cover greys, but blends them, making them less noticeable.

Additionally, you can use this product to keep your permanent hair color looking fresh in between services. For example, if you have vibrant red hair, you can apply shade 58, Ruby Red, every so often to keep your hair looking like it was just done at the salon.

This is also a great product for people who like to change their hair color often. The semi-permanent version will rinse out within a few weeks, leaving you with the option of trying something new.

How To Use Jazzing Hair Color:

The great thing about this product is that it can be used as both a semi-permanent or temporary hair color (although it has been said to last more than one wash).

To Use As a Temporary Color:

• Apply to clean, damp, towel-dried hair. Don’t forget to use protective cream along the hairline to protect your skin from the dye.
• Process for 5-10 minutes.
• Shampoo the product out of your hair and style as desired.

To Use As a Semi-Permanent Color:

• Like stated above, apply to clean, damp, towel-dried hair with a protective cream along the hairline.
• Cover hair with a plastic cap and let process for up to 30 minutes under a warm dryer. The heat allows it to become a semi-permanent color (although the use of heat is not recommended after a relaxing service).
• Shampoo and style as desired.

Final Tips:

• If your hair is too wet or too dry when you apply it, the results will not be favorable. Make sure to use damp, towel-dried hair.
• Because it doesn’t use peroxide, Jazzing hair color will not lift your hair. If you apply a lighter color, like 20 Bold Gold to black hair, your hair will still be black (with a tiny hint of gold).
• The best shades for grey blending are 78 Creme Soda, 80 Toasted Chestnut, 94 Ebony, 96 Coffee Bean, and 99 Bluest Black.
• Use dry shampoo in between washes to make your color last longer. Similarly, use cool or lukewarm water when shampooing your hair.
• Many people have noted that a standard hairdryer is not strong enough to produce the amount of heat needed to lock the color in. I recommend the use of a bonnet hair dryer.
• If you get this dye on your skin, it will take a while to fade away. Roux Clean Touch is a great product for getting color off the skin. Similarly, a protective skin barrier is a good precaution to take.
• Along those same lines, it will probably stain any porous surface it touches such as the bathtub, countertops, clothes, etc. For bathroom surfaces, bleach should clean up the mess. Clothes and carpet won’t be that lucky.
• Jazzing hair color contains conditioning ingredients, so excess conditioner is not needed. Additionally, too much conditioner has been said to make the color fade quicker.
