Let’s talk about fall hair color! Call me basic, but I LOVE fall.

Pumpkin spice everything, holidays, the color changes, cuddling up by the fireplace… I love it all. I’m even one of those people that welcomes the season by changing all the scents in my home to pumpkin spice and using more gold tones in my makeup.

But I’m not the only one that gets excited by the cooler weather and harvest of delicious foods. Let’s just say that it’s now acceptable to start decorating for Halloween when the clock strikes 12 on September 1st.

That being said, it’s also a common practice for women to change up their hair color for the fall season.

You’ll often see hair colors gravitating more towards reds, golds and rich brown tones to commemorate the best time of year. But in today’s world, it doesn’t stop there…creative, dimensional dye jobs are all the rage. The more adventurous, the better.

Rose gold is one of my absolute favorite shades of autumn hair color. Well, to be honest, I pretty much love rose gold anything.

This tone looks best on pre-lightened hair and is created by mixing golden tones with pastel pinks and reds. However, due to it’s growing popularity, many color lines have even come out with exclusive rose gold tones (some, even in permanent hair color).

2. Mulled Wine Hair

Thinking about the holidays makes me excited to cool down with a nice big glass of red wine. I mean, wine pretty much goes with everything right? It’s the perfect hair color for fall.

I’ve previously talked about burgundy hair but mulled wine hair is a bit deeper than that. Of course, burgundy should be used as the base color… but it should also have cinnamon tones layered in for dimension.

Burgundy is named after a burgundy wine, which is what the color is modeled after. It’s a darker purplish-red color and is perfect for fall hairstyles.

3. Salted Caramel Bronde

Salted caramel bronde is a deliciously perfect shade for fall.

In the summer, people tend to go with lighter blondes (as your hair would naturally be when spending time outdoors), but caramel is a toned-down, more neutral version, and it’s much more suitable for fall.

Bronde is a hair color trend that mixes brown and blonde together, with tons of dimension and beautiful lived-in feel. Pairing the concept of bronde hair with caramel tones is a recipe for perfect fall hair.

Auburn is one of the most beautiful shades of red hair and strongly resembles cinnamon, one of the most notable fall flavors.

Since auburn is a naturally occurring red, it can range in value and hue. However, I believe that richer, vibrant shades of dark auburn are better for the fall season.

And of course, adding it to your hair through dimensional highlights makes it that much sweeter.

5. Honey Ombré

Honey blonde is a darker, more natural shade of golden blonde. Like I mentioned above, I think blondes should be more toned-down in the fall season.

Ombré is a color technique that blends dark hair at the roots to lighter ends, without a harsh line. It allows you to go longer in between hair colors and is an excellent choice for fall. Don’t forget that the days are shorter and you’ll likely be busy with holiday parties.

Since we’ve already established how basic I am, I like to picture this hair color up in a messy bun, while the owner is wearing a plaid shirt and skinny jeans, and holding a latte. It’s the epitome of fall.

7. Gold & Burgundy Highlights

When I think about fall hair color, this is what I think about.

I absolutely love when girls add darker red, brown, and golden tones to their hair in the fall.

I know it’s a bit Kelly Clarkson circa 2004, but I still love chunky highlights. And it doesn’t even have to be this way. You can add these in these tones through dimensional balayage or other modern highlighting techniques.

Chocolate browns are perfect for fall because of how rich and vibrant they are. They’re usually formulated by mixing a darker brown base with red or gold undertones, which is where the richness comes from.

I love the idea of a subtle color melt between different levels of chocolate brown to add minimal dimension.

Last, but not least, is one of my most favorite modern hair color trends: coffee hair color, created with super dimensional balayage.

I’m pretty much addicted to coffee. I can’t even tell you how delightful the thought of a nice warm cup of coffee on a brisk fall morning sounds to me right now.

The trick is to use ultra neutral tones that mimic coffee and milk. When they blend together, words can’t even describe how beautiful the result is.
